Hold on to your butts morons, even though tomorrow is the first day of March, old man Winter is bringin' some more stormage. SoCal is getting a soaking and possibly a Sharknado. And there are indications of another storm that may have a surprise for the southeast/mid-Atlantic by the end of next week.
It is tax season so do you know 14 red flags that will get you audited (besides being a registered Republican).

State Sponsored Nannyism
Government doing what government does best. OH Democrat seeks fines for people who idle their car too long. I assume that cops will be exempt.
If temperatures exceed 20 degrees Fahrenheit, residents can run their cars just five minutes in a one-hour period, according to House Bill 458. If it’s 20 degrees or lower, people get an extra five minutes.Exceed that allotted time, by even a second, and you could be charged with a minor misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $150 – and court costs.
Repeatedly commit the “crime” and your violation escalates to a fourth-degree misdemeanor, a maximum fine of $250 and up to 30 days in jail.

Not the recipient. The donor can give up to $14k per year to a recipient, with a lifetime max of a million or so, after which the donor owes gift taxes.
So for sure that $80k price tag becomes $8k.

Only 164 days for paperwork to clear.
Resting comfortably in the cabinet with several Fluffy like friends.
And about 4k rds of Fluffy and friend food.
Now it's time for the Bulmer Murylund meet-n greet, aka the shoot and scoot.

"Actors are big Free Shitters even though the spend more on a pair of sunglasses than what most of us pay per month for the rent or mortgage "
Oh yeah. When you see an actor on the cover of some magazine, remember that they expect to have the clothes they're dressed in for the shoot given to them by the magazine. So - Vogue - a $15,000 dress? It's mine!

Yep. At Christmas, I overheard my 20-something nephew say "sleeps with the fishes." I said, "Ah, that's a great line from 'The Godfather.'" He said, "huh?" He's never seen The Godfather.

I've seen the Godfather movies a bunch of times and the scene that always, always gets me is the one where young Vito arrives at NY Harbor and all the raggedy-assed immigrants gather at the deck to stare at the Statue of Liberty. I can't watch that without crying because my ancestors were among those raggedy-assed Ellis Island immigrants. I always think of how they must have felt, seeing Lady Liberty.
If I watched it in the era of obama, I would cry harder - for different reasons.

My dream diplomatic development:
Putin, fresh off his easy victory in Ukraine, has the inspired idea of a bombshell overture to Japan - return of two of the Kurile islands, occupied since WWII. Japan, already showing understandable signs of resentment and low confidence in the US, welcomes the gesture ...... and this breakthrough leads to serious talks among Japan, Russia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and India about mutual security cooperation (i.e., "CHINA!!!!!").
OK, let a guy dream. Japan IS about fed up with us, for good reason. A few more idiotic faux pas by our bimbo celebrity ambassador to Tokyo (itself an unprecedented slap in the face and signal of an unserious attitude) might help, too.
"We estimate our losses at 10, 20 million tops"
"General Turgidson, do you realize what you're saying? That's mass murder"
"Well I didn't say we wouldn't get our hair mussed"
(paraphrased a bit, but surely a candidate in our movie quote thing)

"God gives us heartache, and the Devil gives us whiskey."
Lot of other good lines in that one, too. Ripping yarn.

OK, not to turn this into a gun thread (per the Iron Law of AOSHQ comment threads), but gotta go mess around with the interrupter/ejector on my 1934 Tula Mosin with the nice laminated stock. Fucker will not chamber rounds loaded from my nice Bulgarian blued stipper clips, and word is that the interrupter is always the source of such troubles.

That is interesting. I remember a few years ago that the Indian air force considered buying F-16s or F-18s but they decided that although they liked the airplanes and even though the US would help them set up facilities to assemble them in India, the politics of the US is too chancy and they might have some asshole in the White House who would refuse to sell them spares just when they needed them so the went with the Russians again.
My personal take is that if they had gone with the F-16 they could have gotten spares from Israel or Venezuela or Holland or somewhere but whatever. I thought we should have sweetened the deal for F-18s by offering them the Kittyhawk and as many F-4s as they wanted from the bone yard at Davis-Monthan.

I hear Obama will challenge Putin to a Game of Thrones trivia contest.
I heard it was "Words with Friends'.
Just catching Kerry's comments from Wednesday on McGlaughlin. What a chimp. He said something like: "We're hoping that Russia will not see this as ah fuh (Sic) sort of continuation of the cold war. We don't see it that way. We do not believe this should be an East/ West Russia/United States this is not Rocky IV believe me".
He is so sexy when he says big word likes "territorial integrity" or makes a cultural reference like Rocky IV. For "territorial integrity" he tossed his head to the side and smiled like he was expecting praise from his homeroom teacher. At the end of the stated quote he put on his "I so seriouse suys" face and bobbed his head on "believe me". Jesus Christ on a cracker this is our leadership?

From Merriam Websters:
Fascism:
a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
I am becoming more and more convinced that Putin is in fact a Fascist. It's obvious really. Read the definition of what a Fascist (with a capital F) is. Do you see any points of divergence with the stated intent or the actions of Putin over the past 2 decades? I don't. He at least payed lip service to protecting Russians in Georgia and now in the Ukraine he's issuing Russian passports to anyone who speaks Russian. I'm sure various assets sweeten the pot a bit but when he sits down with his top men I bet they talk about " Народ, область, лидер"
The problem with Fascists is that they remind me of junkies. I don't know if you've heard the saying "A drunk steals your wallet and runs away but a junky steals your wallet and then volunteers to help you look for it." Junkies and Fascists (and many others) have their own moralities based around their own gods. A junky's god is heroin and a Fascist's god is his own race. All other morality has no bearing in their world. Obama and Kerry can try to talk tom him. Face to face Putin might even let them scold him. He doesn't care. Putin knows that Obama and Kerry's words are empty and that they'll take him back so he'll voluntarily engage in more "honest and open dialog" over a crisis he both created and has already won. He's not going to give back Barry's wallet but he'll pretend to look for it; but he's already thinking about ways to swipe the next one.

....and I noticed something very peculiar.
So, let's just start SAE 3/8" drive.....You'd expect 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 -- right? It just makes sense.
You might expect 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/5, 3/4, 7/8....that's pretty logical.
Knowing how socket sets get padded, you could even believe (1/4" drive) 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4 -- but they also dropped 7/32, 9/32, and 11/32 on me. In 12-point sockets, no less, so there's not really room for approximation.
I'm suspecting that there's some weird "high pressure Nitrogen line" standard that requires a 9/32 socket, so random idiots have trouble opening it. I have no idea what it is, though. Does anyone know what field(s) of endeavor requires socket wrenches denominated in 1/32"?

I have a 1/4" Snap-On socket set on a rail, and those three x/32 sizes are in the set. Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at March 01, 2014 02:51 AM (AQTz3) Hide posts from (AQTz3)
Yeah, I suspect that they're "real" (my set is Craftsman) -- the question is, real for what?
There are a lot of standards set up at odd sizes so that it's difficult to screw things up. For example, a dishwasher air gap has a 5/8" connection to the dishwasher and a 7/8" to the garbage disposal, so it takes real talent to install it backwards -- although I'm sure it would work fine 3/4" in-and-out.
Similarly, SCUBA regulators use 3/8" (24 thread) ports for low-pressure outlets (about 140 psi) and 7/16" (24 thread) ports for high-pressure (tank pressure....typically 3000 psi). As you can imagine, it is bad for equipment and people to plug things into the wrong ports.
So, I'm wondering -- what safety bit involves 7/32"? 9/32"? 11/32"?

We finally got are getting some rain this winter, but we'll have to see how it plays out. There is a reservoir where the BH and I go hiking, and a section of the path runs along the bank with about a 6' drop to the waterline.....and currently, no lie, it's more like 60'. It's more like a puddle than a lake.
The last seriously nasty drought in California was in something like 1977....and the population of the state has doubled since then while all the infrastructure investments were diverted to light rail and carpool lanes and maintenance was robbed to benefit Dem cronies. You can hug as many trees and sasquatches as your little proggie heart desires, but stuff gets real very quickly on a water ration of 3 gal/day.

You see the loop at the end of the loop trail? You can currently walk from there to the boat ramp on the left without getting your feet wet. Similarly, you can walk from there across the light-colored areas to the eastern corner of the dam....or, at least, you could a week ago.

I seem to remember having to use my 11/32 a fair amount, but can't tell you what is was on - maybe under the hood on my old F250?
Of course that engine was Canadian made... Posted by: shredded chi at March 01, 2014 03:31 AM (OmYAr) Hide posts from (OmYAr)
It has to be standard for something, or they wouldn't have included it.....it's not like you can find stuff in that size in a regular hardware store. It's just frustrating to not know what.

Driving to El Monte this morning was quite a slog because the 210 Freeway was broken. A double trailer Fedex rig had gone out of control and made a mess on the East bound side. I don't know if any other vehicles were involved but it smashed a bunch of those temporary center divider blocks and rebounded AFAICT to come to rest on the hillside adjacent the freeway on the right.

LA goes insane every time it gets a sprinkle, anyway. They have freakin' ice-storms in Cleveland on a regular basis and manage to deal with it, but any time there's enough mist on LA freeways to lift the oil drips into contact with tires, people totally go nuts. Not that I'm unaware of my own limitations, mind you.

My only dealings with #8s are 8/32 screws for lighting fixtures, commthercial metal box covers and such, so those fasteners are just #2 Phillips head. Preferably Klein. Posted by: shredded chi at March 01, 2014 03:55 AM (OmYAr) Hide posts from (OmYAr)
And you put me the other half. Standard screws like "4-40", "6-32", and "10-24" are based on wire gauge and threads per inch -- and, of course, wire gauge (AWG) would result in odd-size nuts and bolts.
Posted by: cthulhu at March 01, 2014 12:04 AM (T1005)
804 It's for the old #8,10, and 12 threads. Chevy's usta have them on
the coils and starters, for example. They later standardized/oversized
those fastener sizes so you wouldn't need so many wrenches/sockets

I, for one, fully support diet supplementation for Pixy's hamsters....their usual diet of meth and Val-u-rite is scandalously unhealthy, and borders on rodent abuse. Not quite 'Richard Gere'-level -- but rodent abuse, nonetheless.

Well, it is the best policy when armored vehicles and infantry appear on your city streets to ignore them, and tweet out a protest on how 'unacceptable' it is.
It's not like you're going to war because someone parked a tank in the middle of a street intersection. Who would do that?
