Overnight Open Thread (2 May 2014)
— CDR M

Court jester journalists. Pretty sad the President thinks that the toughest interview he faced in the 2012 election year was from a comedian.

Hopefully with the Benghazi coverup unraveling and some Presidential fluffers masquerading as journalists starting to realize how stupid they look parroting administration talking points, maybe future interviews will actually be tougher than those from comedians. I'm not holding my breath. One or two or three journalists asking hard questions will be marginalized. A large majority will have to remember what a journalist is supposed to do if they are going to save their profession and regain the public trust.

I don't want to hear one more damn thing about the reason why things suck is because of Bush. Evidently, two years is enough to get past something according to this dude. I dare this POS to say "dude, it was so two years ago" to the families of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, and Tyrone S. Woods. The President is fond of saying "I got your back". Well, evidently not when it is politically inconvenient to his personal fortunes. Did You Know

Did you know that superbugs killed more people last year than guns did? Clearly, we need some superbug free zones or somethin'.

The new report on the global threat adds to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report last year showing that two million people in the United States are infected annually with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and 23,000 of them die each year as a result.

Lies

Songs about lies and liars. Befitting of our current administration.

Cronut Sequel

The maker of the cronut has come out with something new. It's called the waffogato.

Vanilla ice cream waffle with Belgium waffle bits, slightly salted, and topped with maple-syrup espresso poured on top. As the ice cream melts, little tapioca pearls are revealed and float in the melted ice cream espresso sauce.

Liquid Nitrogen Bottle Rockets

Space Stuff

This is pretty cool. 360 degree Mars panorama view from Curiosity.

NASA has turned on the live HD camera feed from the ISS. Pretty sad we have to rely on Russia to get our astronauts back and to launch our spy satellites.

Star Wars

How is J. J. Abrams going to ruin Star Wars? Heh. They forgot to mention lensflare.

3. The dream scenario: Abrams miraculously doesn't fuck it up and comes up with an original story that pays homage to the truly great things the Star Wars movies have accomplished and the good parts of Lucas's legacy while not getting bogged down in the minutiae that tends to plague well-loved franchises with annoying, protective fan bases. This movie would allow each original cast member to have a significant role in the film while also managing a seamless torch-passing between them and the next generation of Star Wars actors. The plot of this film would resemble that of a Kurosawa movie, there would be zero Ewoks or Jedi academies, and the dude from Girls would die in, like, the third scene.

Ben Folds singin' I Shot An Ewok was worth the watch.

I shot an Ewok baby.
The sad memories kill me.
Whipped out my master blaster baby.
I shot the furry little feller from his tree.

Pin-Ups For Vets

God bless these ladies. Pin-Ups for Vets: Group of women tour VA hospitals dressed as 40's era pin-ups.

With their hot red lips, swing skirts and flowered hair pins, thereÂ’s a group of gals turning heads around Veterans Affairs hospitals and military bases across the country.

“Am I dreaming?” asked one perplexed Vietnam veteran at the Long Beach, Calif. VA hospital last week as three vivacious women – Gina Elise, Julia Reed Nichols and Kelli Serio – with their Bettie Page looks and big smiles came to his bedside with goods to give out. “This is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time.”

Here's their website.

134 Wilmington NC during a search for missing woman a body was discovered an a man released after 23 years in prison was arrested, but.. On Thursday, Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous announced during a press conference that preliminary testing revealed the body found in a field on Hoover Road near Wolf Pond Road was not likely Shannon Rippy Vannewkirk's as first believed, but that of another unidentified homicide victim. Vannewkirk was reported missing April 7 after last being seen downtown April 5. Her co-worker, James Opleton Bradley, 51, a convicted killer who'd been released in 2013 after 23 years in prison for beating and strangling his 8-year-old stepdaughter and tossing her body into a Dumpster, was arrested Tuesday night on a first-degree murder warrant charging him with Vannewkirk's death. So now do we have two murders by the convicted murderer?

I'm surprised roses grow out front because those roots are huge & invasive. Kid started showing up around 6:30 or 7 in July. 144 Jerry Brown, the biggest dunce on the planet. Come and join him on Ignorance Island. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown says it appears there was little California could have done to keep Toyota from moving its U.S. headquarters and about 3,000 jobs to Texas, saying "change is inevitable." The Democratic governor noted that senior Toyota officials said the company wanted to consolidate operations in one location. Company officials said the decision to consolidate in Plano, a suburb of Dallas, was based partly on its proximity to company manufacturing plants. Texas Gov. Rick Perry said his state offered Toyota $40 million in incentives. Republicans have criticized Toyota's move as another sign of California's inhospitable business climate. Brown told reporters in Los Angeles on Friday that a static economy is a dead one. Still, he says he is concerned about making California "as attractive a place as we can."

166 You know another good use for Dawn or other types of liquid soaps? They'll clear a seriously clogged toilet with ease. If you can't get a toilet to clear with a plunger try this before calling a plumber: Put several squirts of liquid soap in the toilet along with a glass or two of warm to hot water. Wait about 15 minutes. Plunge the hell out of it and flush. It works. You might need to do it again but it works. The soap acts as a lubricant and plunging it works the clog over the soap and gets it nice and slick. Flush and watch it go right down. I've used this trick several times over the years and it's always worked.

One only made it worse for a week or so after each one.

178 Mpfs, I tried that too😃 If you do decide to make your own detergent, I found Kirk's Castile comes in a three pack at Walmart and works well. Just freeze it and grate it with your food processor. Then change the blade out and pulse it with the powders in batches to get it really fine. The key is to work in batches and not let it get too hot from the processing because then it gets "gummy/soft" and harder to work with but can still be done. If you want to add a scent you can add a bar of Dr. Bromards(sp) soap or any scented soap of choice. I just found that this brand smells great and natural but will still add scent to the whole batch without being overwhelming.

180 I had looked into making dishwashing and laundry detergent using washing soda, but right now I'm happy with Finish Powerball Tabs and All Free-and-Clear liquid.

The secret for the former seems to be that it evidently comes in a truly bizarre variety of package sizes -- 20, 32, 42, 60, 90, 110 -- and one package size (not necessarily the largest) will be significantly cheaper per tab than the others. The secret for the latter is to get it at Walmart.

200 Couldn't get to a computer 'till now. Some one tell NJC if you run across him: Spam Gyros. Seriously. 3-4 Lbs Spam Greek seasoning, lots Marjoram, 1 TBS Onions to taste Garlic to taste Tomatoes Lemon Juice Tzatziki sauce or yogurt+cucumber Pita Chop the Spam and tie up in cheese cloth or thin towel, soak in plain water for 30 minutes, squeeze the hell out to drain off the water. This reduces salt and grease. Season with onions, garlic, Greek seasoning, Marjoram, salt & pepper to taste. Interesting variation is to add some chopped sweet pepper and/or pretty dry Kalamata olive bits (warning: SALTY!). Compress into loaf pan and bake covered at 325 IN A WATER BATH (prevents burning) for 70 minutes or until center reads about 130 F. Take out and compress with foil wrapped bricks/loaf pan full of rocks/whatever - use the most weight you can - for 30-60 minutes. Pour off grease, slice, serve with onions, tomatoes, sauce, olives, extra seasoning, etc. Surprisingly good. Lamb is hard to get around here. This much more moist than lean beef + pork...

As with other liberal states, the heavy concentration of Gimmiedat-ic Party voters in the big urban centers has a distortive effect. As in other such states, there are places in CA that are plenty politically sensible, but simply outnumbered.

I'm still laughing about the Six Californias initiative. I wouldn't have drawn the dividing lines the way that Draper chose to, and I don't think this can pass or will survive challenges, but I certainly will vote for it.

261 "God knows, the taxi drivers here in SF are the worst."

Also -- and I don't know if they've corrected this yet -- catching a cab from SFO into the city used to be insanely dangerous.

The deal was that the cabbies had a half-hour grace period after leaving the airport. If they got back within that time, they got to go back to the head of the taxi queue from which they had left, instead of the tail of the queue.

This was to let them drop off local fares or go grab a meal without losing their place. Getting stuck in the tail of the queue meant long waits for the next fare and knocked down the cabbies' end of day take-home pay.

Of course, as with any government policy, the Law of Unintended Consequences kicked in, and you had cabbies trying to make it from SFO to SF and back to SFO within half an hour. It is physically possible to do this, but not possible without driving at absolutely nutzoid speeds.

The 101 freeway in between the airport and the city is narrow, congested, and not in good repair. It's got a section dubbed "Hospital Curve", I kid you not. It's not someplace to be driving ninety and dodging semis. And a couple of really ugly accidents involving cabs happened as a result of just that.

When I lived in San Antonio I always kept a bottle of Limeaway around because it took about a day for the deposits to build up, it was that bad. Plus one on those magic erasers, they can get spendy though, since they basically dissolve as you use them but they work. They will also get your grout lines like new again. But wear gloves, they can wear your skin off like a rug burn after a while.

Earning one's chops as a cab driver in San Francisco before GPS was really a feather in the cap. Not as crazy as London with "The Knowledge", but still a difficult accomplishment. Now, as you say, it's all the magic box, in a city not well suited to the magic box.

I had one cabbie start fuming on the way into North Beach when I said, "No. Don't turn here. Go straight. Three blocks. Then follow my instructions."

But, not long after that, I said, "Slow down. SLOW DOWN. Police. POLICE."

He slowed down and about five seconds later, had an SFPD motorcycle cop come into view, who would have picked him off like a duck. He quit mumbling imprecations in Hindi after that.

432 "I was having terrible trouble with the dishes and scale build up in the dishwasher. I now put a dab of a citric acid product in each wash. Works great."

Mercedes-Benz dealerships offer the customer an option of a quite pricey flush of their vehicle's cooling system. There is a particular packet of white powder with an MBZ corporate part number, to be dissolved in water and applied to the system.

It's pure citric acid with an eleventy quadzillion percent markup applied.

450 Uber is a good idea in many ways, especially if one wants to ride in a clean car with a driver who speaks English and doesn't smell like he slept with a herd of goats They should play on the same level as livery companies who have to pay livery insurance rates, licensing, and follow the same rules. They don't have to pay vehicle financing, maintenance, insurance, or licensing so they can afford to compete on the same playing field Government goons will send squads to arrest and shut down lemonade stands, bake sales, or burrito trucks but they let a multibillion dollar Silicon Valley company skate on the laws Besides, Travis Kalinick is a typical Obama loving douchebag tech CEO. Posted by: RWC at May 03, 2014 01:01 AM (QeH9j) I'm not defending the cab companies, I'm saying the market should decide, but in doing so, the playing field must be level. In my city, you cannot hail a taxi on the street or at the airport. You have to call in to the taxi company and wait for them. At the airport you will see ten or so taxis sitting and waiting. They are waiting for you to call the dispatcher, the dispatcher call the taxi, and the taxi drive up to the stand and pick you up. You cannot pick up your bags at the claim check, walk out to a taxi and tell him where you want to go. Same goes for being downtown and seeing an empty cab drive by. Can't hail it, call and one will be dispatched to you, eventually. And yes, the whole cab/taxi thing is corrupt, but if you were to call yourself a "limo" company, it is easy peasy.

Cheapest roundtrip is $652.  And closest airports besides JAN are New Orleans or Memphis.  Both more than 3 hours away.

And Southwest is discontinuing air service between JAN and LAS on June 7th.

Galbraith it means "a rarefied pseudo-love for certain fictional characters (in anime, manga, and the like) and their related embodiments." Basically is the feeling of "d'awww" you get with a character. Basically a cute and endearing character who makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_(slang) Also: Moe is a Japanese term used in connection with manga or anime to describe something precious, usually (but not always) the ideal of youthful and innocent femininity. Written with the kanji for "to bud or sprout" (萌 , the concept covers a range of ideal behaviour for youthful female characters in manga or anime. To be moe, a character can be eager or perky, not overly independent, and call forth a desire in the viewer to protect them and nurture them. The term is also used to describe any preciously cute item; there is an animal mascot character store in Tokyo called Moe. http://tinyurl.com/2h8m93

When off leash he's almost always at heel, or no more than 6' away from me, and always under voice control. He stops and sits at every street crossing. So I'm walking, listening to Heartless Bastards on my phone, and some lady driving by in a PT Cruiser with a dog in the passenger seat yells something at me. Since I was listening to music it took me a moment to register what she yelled: "Leash your dog!" Had I been quicker on the uptake, I would have yelled back, "Stop speeding!" (she was doing 35 in a 25 zone). But alas, she was already out of earshot and I was left to ponder, WTF does she care? Who else does she yell at? Skateboarders without helmets? Dudes wearing sandles with socks? So anyway, I get my 10 lb. sack of rabbit food, and grab a can of soda from a vending machine. Come up to a crosswalk to cross the street. Smokey sits as he always does. A guy in a white SUV stops to let me cross. I give a slight nod in his direction in acknowledgement and cross the street, soda in one hand, bag of rabbit food in the other, and keeping a close eye on Smokey to ensure that he stays heeled. Get to the other curb, guy in the SUV yells as he accelerates away, "You're Welcome!" Again, WTF? Am I supposed to drop all my stuff, ignore my dog, and go shake the guy's hand? I let people cross in front of me all the time when I'm driving, and I never expect accolades for doing what is A) common courtesy and B) legally required. If someone waves and thanks me I smile and nod in return, and maybe mouth "no problem", but I honestly don't even notice nor care if they don't acknowledge me. Actually, someone posted the Common Core timeline of 20th century American history, and the Apollo program and the moon landings are completely omitted from it.

It does, however, highlight the publication of Rachel Carson's _Silent Spring_. Which I'm sure we can all agree was of vastly greater historical import.

577 "Of course, I shouldn't be surprised. I live in the SF Bay Urea, so, like Dark Helmet, I'm surrounded by (liberal) Assholes."

Far be it from me to defend sanctimonious Bay Area liberal assholes, since I have to suffer through them too, but leash-your-dog-lady may possibly have had bad experiences with one or more of the dogs round here that are allowed to be unleashed while being completely uncontrolled.

I saw an example of that just the other day. Dog running around in a very loose semi-random orbit around its owner as he strolled, phone to ear. Completely ignoring his pooch as it got hyper and aggro and charged into places it ought not have been allowed to go. Thirty yards' distance between human owner and canine at times. Not putting on a good face for the rest of the public.

On the other end of the spectrum, a woman went past a couple of weeks ago with what (I tried to count) may have been as many as a dozen microdogs of various types. All of them on leash simultaneously. How in the world she ever kept them from wrapping themselves, and her, up in one huge Gordian knot, I will never know.

581 Actually, someone posted the Common Core timeline of 20th century American history, and the Apollo program and the moon landings are completely omitted from it. It does, however, highlight the publication of Rachel Carson's _Silent Spring_. Which I'm sure we can all agree was of vastly greater historical import. Not making this up. Try looking at Sintra, Portugal -- http://tinyurl.com/jvptfbw -- it may end up being cheaper. If you're in Wisconsin and not a SCUBA diver, there are a ton of options.

That's not to say that non-divers should avoid the Caribbean -- there are a lot of cool experiences there -- but there are alternatives that'll give you something to talk about.

Not to rain on your parade, but I called home to Calgary today, and the word was: "weather here is shitty (for moving rigs), take as much time down South as you want".  So here I am in Apache Junction, working on a wreck of a house I bought. It got to about 100 degrees today; I was sweating out water by the pint, but I got some good work done.

594 Still kicking myself for not buying in Italy 3x3 Occhi manga.

The Dude, well there is always the 23k+ screaming fans at A-kon June 6?

Madtom, being a WWII Pacific buff Black Lagoon gets my 'meh' going.  Because yeah an early model, say PT-107/109, Elco 80ft is what most people think of as a PT boat.  I see the metal tubes for the torpedos and I think now there is a ton of metal slowing the boat down.

And I know what a devil of a time the WWII Museum is having restoring their Higgins 78ft that saw action in the Med that I just can't see one still being a viable platform so many decades after most were burned off Samar at the end of the war.

*climbs off my WWII soapbox*

Now if Revy had one of the Pegasus hydrofoils, well 76mm gun and 8 Harpoons plus being far swifter than a PT boat just put in the water.  That might have been interesting.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 02, 2014 11:21 PM (L+hnr)

595 Agrees, Anna. That boat was a bit underarmed, neh?

Posted by: The Dude at May 02, 2014 11:24 PM (bStrg)

597 It works. You might need to do it again but it works. The soap acts as a lubricant and plunging it works the clog over the soap and gets it nice and slick. Flush and watch it go right down.

I've used this trick several times over the years and it's always worked.

Bay Area foothill roads have to be some of the best in the world for bicycling.

Especially when you have the gravity vector pointing in a helpful direction.

I try to stay off the actual roads these days. Too many dumbshit drivers, which in the context of the Bay Area, is really saying something.

Anyone who still bicycles here may have a shot at noticing me as I drive past. I'm one of those rare birds who still hangs back patiently behind bicyclists on curves and then passes on the straight with as wide a margin as I can safely contrive.

Where I live in Alberta, the well water is harder than the back of God's head. The ONLY thing that will clean the soap/mineral scum off the bathroom fixtures is a product called "CLR" aka "Calcium, Lime , Rust remover". Nitric acid also works, but it is hard on people.

625 Wagaya no Oinari-Sama?  Its about these two boys who have lost their mother.  Youngest brother turns out to posses strong water affinity magic so creatures are hunting for him.  So his grandmother releases Kuu-chan, a nine-tail fox spirit under house arrest for being too mischievous, to act as the boy's guardian.  Also Kou-chan, a strangely other worldly shrine maiden, is also sent along.

The title literally means "Our House's Fox Spirit" because Kuu moves in with the boys and their father.  So their lives get complicated by dealing with supernatural creatures.  Like the local kami of commerce runs a quik-stop, his assistants are fierce looking demon dogs who are truthfully some of the dumbest animals around.  One episode deals with Kuu going toe to toe with a werewolf.  Other kami wander in. Along with spirits and things that go bump.  Even Kuu's sibling Gou gets in on the act, trying to save Kuu from the humans because Gou is angry over the imprisonment Kuu suffered.

Let it be said that Kuu at first takes on the duty to guard the boys out of affection for the boys' mother.  Their mother was the only one who treated Kuu during her imprisonment as a person.  So Kuu is willing to do anything and risk much for the boys whom Kuu starts to have affection for because they are so like their mother.

One of the twists this show takes with the fox spirit mythos is kitsune can switch genders at will.  So Kuu and Gou switch all the time.  But a lesser nogistune in the show, him and his kit can't do that.
