I'm going to be super-busy this week so expect minimalistic sparse pithy ONTs.

Le Shock: Racist Dorm Door Writing Was a Hoax

The Grand Valley State University Police Department has concluded a thorough investigation of the Racial Bias incident reported on February 17, 2014. The person believed to be responsible for the drawing and language written on the dry erase board is a Grand Valley student and the owner of the message board.

The incident has had a disruptive impact on the community and as a result, the student has been referred to the Dean of Students for a student code violation. University policy does not permit the release of his/her name.

No they should be named and shamed. And why are these kind of incidents still taken seriously when they're almost always hoaxes.

Free Speech for Me, Theft, Battery, and Vandalism for Thee

Professor of Feminist Studies, Mireille Miller-Young: Thug. And yeah Ace has already covered the 'triggered' part of this story.

In essence, Miller-Young told me that she felt "triggered" by the images on the posters. Miller-Young stated that she had been walking through the Arbor to get back to South Hall. Miller-Young said she was approached by people who gave her literature about abortion. Miller-Young said that she found this literature and pictures disturbing.

...Miller-Young said that she situation became "passionate" and that other students in the area were "triggered" in a negative way by the imagery. Miller-Young said that she and others began demanding that the images be taken down. Miller-Young said that the demonstrators refused.

At which point, Miller-Young said that she "just grabbed it [the sign] from this girl's hands." Asked if there had been a struggle, Miller-Young stated, "I'm stronger so I was able to take the poster."

No doubt Miller-Young could write an entire thesis on physical domination and its role in victimization of minority views but she's absolutely blind to its application in her own actions. I suspect a little Fen's Law action here.

I asked if Miller-Young had carried the poster into her office or if she had students carried it. Miller-Young said that she had carried the poster but that there were students with her. Miller-Young went on to say that because the poster was upsetting to her and other students, she felt that the activists did not have the right to be there.

In a sane, decent world Miller-Young would not be allowed to have any authority over other human beings since she'll just certainly abuse it. But you know...

CA GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Has an Interesting Past

Well I'm sure that the illegal concealed carry, attempted rape, underage hookers, and voluntary manslaughter were all just misunderstandings. On the other hand perhaps he's just the guy to deal with all the un-convicted Democrat criminals in the state legislature.

Quote of the Day

Once, when I was teaching at an institution that bent over backward for foreign students, I was asked in class one day, "What is your policy toward foreign students?" My reply was: "To me, all students are the same. I treat them all the same and hold them all to the same standards." The next semester there was an organized boycott of my classes by foreign students. When people get used to preferential treatment, equal treatment seems like discrimination.

LAPD Cops Argue All Cars in L.A. Are Under Investigation

For some future non-specified crime.

The agencies took a novel approach in the briefs they filed in EFF and the ACLU of Southern California's California Public Records Act lawsuit seeking a week's worth of Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) data. They have argued that "All [license plate] data is investigatory." The fact that it may never be associated with a specific crime doesn't matter.

PowerLine Eviscerates the WaPo over Their Koch Attack Article

And then eviscerates their pathetic response to the first evisceration. Truly a take-down of exquisite beauty.

Let me offer an alternative explanation of why the Washington Post published their Keystone/Koch smear: 1) The Washington Post in general, and Mufson and Eilperin in particular, are agents of the Left, the environmental movement and the Democratic Party. 2) The Keystone Pipeline is a problem for the Democratic Party because 60% of voters want the pipeline built, while the party's left-wing base insists that it not be approved. 3) The Keystone Pipeline is popular because it would broadly benefit the American people by creating large numbers of jobs, making gasoline more plentiful and bringing down the cost of energy. 4) Therefore, the Democratic Party tries to distract from the real issues surrounding the pipeline by claiming, falsely, that its proponents are merely tools of the billionaire Koch brothers-who, in fact, have nothing to do with Keystone one way or the other. 5) The Post published its article to assist the Democratic Party with its anti-Keystone talking points.

Given Mufson and Eilperen's shoddy work and conflict of interest why they're still working for the WaPo is a 'mystery' (see 5. above).

Schumer Claims Senate Has Votes For Journalist Protection Law

But bloggers will be excluded as not being real journalists:

The bill also says that information is only privileged if it is disseminated by a news medium, described as "newspaper, nonfiction book, wire service, news agency, news website, mobile application or other news or information service (whether distributed digitally or otherwise); news program, magazine or other periodical, whether in print, electronic or other format; or thorough television or radio broadcast ... or motion picture for public showing." While the definition covers traditional and online media, it draws the line at posts on Twitter, blogs or other social media websites by non-journalists.

Hawt Male Dance Moves Broken Down

By using cutting-edge motion-capture technology, we have been able to precisely break down and analyse specific motion patterns in male dancing that seem to influence women's perceptions of dance quality. We find that the variability and amplitude of movements in the central body regions (head, neck and trunk) and speed of the right knee movements are especially important in signalling dance quality. A 'good' dancer thus displays larger and more variable movements in relation to bending and twisting movements of their head/neck and torso, and faster bending and twisting movements of their right knee. As 80 per cent of individuals are right-footed, greater movements of the right knee in comparison with the left are perhaps to be expected. In comparative research, there is extensive literature on the signalling capacities of movement.Researchers have suggested that females prefer vigorous and skilled males; such cues are derived from male motor performance that provides a signal of his physical condition.

10 My addition to the "why the WaPo published the Keystone article": There are thousands of readers who have read the article and will likely never see the pushback from Powerline or anyone at the Post who blogged about it, nor will they see the defense of the article that the authors had to write. They read the original article in the Post and if it's in the Post, it has to be true.

Someone should start a page listing things like every time the left runs a kookoo or an agent, on their own budget, in a GOP primary to siphon off votes. more from the link about Putzhead Charlie:

The bill's protections would apply to a "covered journalist," defined as an employee, independent contractor or agent of an entity that disseminates news or information. The individual would have to have been employed for one year within the last 20 or three months within the last five years.

It would apply to student journalists or someone with a considerable amount of freelance work in the last five years. A federal judge also would have the discretion to declare an individual a "covered journalist" who would be granted the privileges of the law.

A revolver that loads with loose (black) powder and projectile from the from front of the cylinder, and a separate cap on the nipple. Pretty much every revolver up through the Civil War and used alongside the newer cartridge revolvers for a long time afterwards.

103 I was just reading this post at Hot Air about how hack nate silver finally allows the GOP has better than a 50% chance at winning the Senate (find it yourself, ace's archaic code still doesn't allow long URLs-I remember installing a script in our forum to automatically truncate them in 2002) Looking at his picks, something occurred to me: he always picks favorites. If you spend all your time picking the favorite, who are usually favored for very good reasons, you'll end up with a pretty good track record of predictions. He picks the GOP to win in GA, even tho it's close, and the dems to win in MI, altho that's also close. Why? Because, all things being equal, these are the results you'd expect. He NEVER picks any long-shots against the common wisdom. He picked Obama because he was favored and most polls did pick him to win. You too can be a star number-cruncher like silver. Pick the favorite to win every week in the NFL, every game, and you'll have a pretty sweet record of predictions, I'd suppose. Don't know why it took me so long to figure his schtick out. When has silver ever picked a long-shot and had it pan out?

In the past 20+ years the defense industry fled, millions of conservatives also fled, and millions of illegal immigrants moved in. With regard to Fen's Law, which I believe is this:

Fen's Law: "The left believes none of the things they lecture the rest of us about."

I think they do 'believe' the things they lecture us about...

They just don't seem to apply those things to themselves.

I'm not so sure they do believe the things they lecture us about. Remember when they told us that signing statements were a horrible violation of the Constitution, and that the Senate "nuclear option" was evidence that the Republicans wanted to destroy the country? Do you think we'd be hearing a lecture about the immorality of droning terrorists if a Republican were President?

Posted by: Splunge at March 23, 2014 10:00 PM (qyomX)

-----------

Well yeah, Splunge...they lecture us about all those things.

And then they don't hold themselves to what they lecture us about.

But I'm not willing to let them off the hook for their Outrageous Hypocrisy in doing that.

Which is what saying "They really don't believe it" does.

They're lecturing us about it.

They're acting as though they are setting a 'standard' by which all that it applies to shall henceforth adhere to.

If we in turn say..."Yeah, but they really don't believe that".

Then it seems to me like we're giving them a Pass for being such rank hypocrites.

Below is a link to his review, an anti-Christian paragraph of it, and the revision that I took it upon myself to leave in his comment section.

http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2014/03/initial-burst/

Wells: "Rightwing Christian wackos are apparently objecting to the ecological metaphors about tending the garden and whatnot. Conservatives have always felt itÂ’s their right to have absolute dominion over the earth, and in todayÂ’s context that means an absolute right to despoil all they want so they can swagger around and live in McMansion vacation homes in Wyoming or Idaho so IÂ’m not surprised this aspect bothers them. Who are we to obey the earth? The earth obeys us, and we can burn fossil fuels any time we feel like it. We have our lifestyles to enhance!"

qdpsteve: "Leftwing atheist assholes are apparently objecting to the biblical respect about fearing God and whatnot. Progressives have always felt itÂ’s their right to have absolute dominion over the universe, and in todayÂ’s context that means an absolute right to hate and propagandize all they want so that their hypocritical leaders can swagger around and live in giant BevHills estates while ordering the rest of us to live in mud huts, so IÂ’m not surprised this aspect bothers them. Who are we to believe in God? "Liberals" demand absolute obedience, and they spew bigoted bullshit any time they feel like it. They have their precious egos to enhance."

Posted by: Grey Fox at March 23, 2014 10:19 PM (qxS12) fnord (qxS12) Everyone has their boosters and detractors, especially in that price range, and it seems like no one does serious testing anymore, just a range session and an article (years ago I read a 10,000 round test on a SIG P220). That being said - Rock Island Arms Taurus Charles Daly Ruger SR1911 Para Ordnance In no particular order. One theory is to go as cheap as you can / used gun and just plan on spending a couple hundred with a reputable gunsmith to tune it up. For whatever reason, probably because people just expect it, 1911s often require a bash on the head to work properly. Nobody else gets away with that. In order of "internet complaints least to most": Ruger Daly Para RIA Taurus But that's not really a definitive answer either. Dalys are relatively rare, Para 1911s have been around forever, Taurus and Ruger relatively new in this market. Para, Taurus and to some extent RIA will be more "kitted out" with custom parts from the factory. Paras can be high-capacity depending on your state. Oh I forget Remington, I think I saw their basic 1911 for under $700.

I am getting so sick of the Left rewriting history to suit themselves.

Case in point:

'Da Vinci' on Starz channel.

I'm done with it.

As disgusted as I was with the first season...I shouldn't have watched the season 2 premier last night.

According to this show, Leonardo Da Vinci was a bisexual horndog, with supernatural visions, who delves into every ancient pagan religion that he can find.

All in search of 'the hidden knowledge of the ages', of course.

Now, I am all for entertaining tales of pure fiction, mind you.

But why do they have to spin such tales around an actual Historical Figure?

Why not just create a whole new tale of some fictional character?

If the cops were running plates and any "dings" were picked up 5 miles down the road, I wouldn't have a problem with having them run plates, either. But what is happening is that massive amounts of data are being collected and cross-correlated (using programming languages that didn't even exist 10 years ago) to build sophisticated behavioral models to nefarious ends. And it's getting very annoying, 'cause I can pick it up in my peripheral vision.

I know I'm getting to him because once before when I ridiculed one of his anti-Christian rants, he chided me for being "so full of bile." I didn't even bother to respond. He's a screaming Stalinist hypocrite who richly deserves to be treated the way he treats others.

Kimber?  I wouldn't.  Way too much price for a "designer-chic" gun, with far too many model variants not exactly having sterling reputations in terms of quality and function.

Futher, Kimber has a fairly well deserved reputation for spotty customer service.

Yeah, lots of people have good ones.  Lots of people have bad ones, too.  Run a Bing search on "Kimber problems", and be amazed.

If you want a Springfield GI, go to Gunbroker.com, and look 'em up.  You'll find one, and if you're patient, a NIB (new in box) unit will come along.  Bid wisely, and be willing to lose in an auction fight.  Don't succumb to "gottahavit" fever, there.

And strangely, the inexpensive Rock Island imports are gaining a reputation as a very good chassis for the price.  And I do know that they sell a GI variant, so it's worth a look.  Two caveats on the RIA 1911s though.  Buy a full spring set from Wolff Springs.  Install 'em after a 500 round break-in.  And, ditch the mags, and invest in Chip McCormick Power Mags, (or Ed Brown, or Wilson, or even Kimber mags.....yeah, their mags are good).

About 80 percent of all semi-auto "problems" can be traced to 1. bad mags, or 2. worn springs.

Nothing personal on dissing the Kimbers.  Ask most gun retailers who don't carry them, why they don't.  You'll get an earful.

259 So I made pork chops with a mustard-tarragon sauce for dinner. I followed the recipe which said to sear them on one side at medium-high heat for 3 minutes, flip them over, reduce heat to medium, and cook for 5-10 minutes until the internal temperature reached 135º. The problem was that the thermometer only read 100º even after 10 minutes. I cut one open and didn't see any pink, so I stopped cooking. I didn't want them to end up like shoe leather. It tasted all right. I think my thermometer works. I hope I don't end up in the emergency room. I also had a problem with the pan sauce. It didn't thicken like the recipe said. It was kind of runnier than I would have liked. I always have trouble like that when cooking. It never seems to go the way the cookbook says it should.

Yep.

A campaign committee controlled by the newly elected chairman of the state Republican Party donated $1,300 to Democrat Wendy GreuelÂ’s Los Angeles mayoral bid.

Jim Brulte said he made the donation before he realized Kevin James was a viable Republican candidate. “That was before I thought Kevin James had a great shot,” he said of the September donation. “At the end of the day, look at what the Democrats have done to that city. And I think Eric Garcetti and Jan Perry, who are good people, would be more of the same. Sometimes you have to find the least objectionable alternative.”

Brulte also insists he will “not wade into incendiary matters like immigration, climate change or same-sex marriage“.

Actually that'll be a shame because the loonies make San Francisco colorful and interesting, it's not as if they came in and ruined the place. The techies taking over because of the "vibrant culture" of SF will ironically drive out what they find appealing about it. What's left are overpriced gourmet coffee shops and fusion cuisine eateries each looking for some faddish edge. 280 Grey Fox I am thinking about getting a 1911 with my tax refund, ... One thing you might consider doing is checking out manufacturers, models and prices on-line. I did this, as an exercise, for M1911 models. As you might expect, each manufacturer has a price range, and many overlap ... although not all. There is an implication of quality, but it seems only partly related to price: Kahr, Taurus, TISAS, Century and Armscor have sub $400 offerings; Ruger, EAA, ATI and Bersa start at $410, Taylor & Co, American Classic, Cimarron and Rock Island start at $450; Springfield Armory, Auto Ordnance, Iver Johnson and Smith & Wesson and SIG start in the $475-$499 range; H&K starts at $820, add $30 for Colt. Roberts Defense, Metro Arms, Ithaca and Dan Wesson are in the $1300-1800 range. Remember that there is a range, and that the prices listed are the cheapest of the range. The range varies: Ruger seems to have about a $75 range, Smith&Wesson very much more. It looks to me that the offerings at about $475 are quite adequate; I recognise the manufacturers, and even the manufacturers whose offerings start at $400 are still recognized as quality manufacturers. The ones above $600 may offer better ... quality(?) ... but how much better? Maybe the price increase really buys something tangible. I look at : - design (effectively 1 design; all 1911s are extremely similar), - materials (I like steel, I'm ok with aluminum, I dislike polymers, as they out-gas, and become brittle over time, whether 5 years or 50 years) - fit & finish / manufacturing ... how well-made is the particular item I'm looking at, and how far off average is it (am I looking at a 1-off excellent piece, or are all items this well made)? The downside of this is that you might not end up with a Colt ... and you REALLY want a Colt.

My guess would be that it should have said, flip, reduce temp, and cover. A lot of recipes depend on still air, which sometimes isn't happening. Most pan sauces work better if you ignore them until you can put the meat onto a "resting plate" -- then reduce the sauce.....a trifle extra because of the juices on the resting plate, then reintroduce.

312 280 This evening's episode of "wait, wait" was broadcast from SF, and the tag at the end was a quip by Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane: "San Francisco is forty-nine square miles surrounded by reality". Since then, it's metastasized.....

Posted by: cthulhu at March 23, 2014 10:51 PM (T1005)

If trends continue as they are and barring a massive collapse of the tech sector, the looney and colorful lefties will be driven out of San Francisco due to ultra-high rents and "trendy" restaurants that nonetheless are conformist in cuisine.

In the end it's not the spontaneous weirdness of San Francisco, but centrally planned and controlled culture of the Google Left

And that would be pretty sad

I had to take a Domestic Violence class for certification in a job I had. I have always considered Alinski's book to be a how-to guide to adapt strategies of spousal and domestic abuse to political activity. So yes, I agree, "triggering" accusations is a tactic to be expected as part of the logical development of that approach. The principal part of domestic violence is not hitting someone, most places you can't hardly swing a fist without hitting someone. The real trick is getting your victim to hold still for the second blow, and accept it as part of life, or as part of expiating their own wrong-doing and low personal worth.

What's interesting, is that this Professor of Wimmyns Studies, Ms. Miller-Young...would likely be very vocal in condemning someone who used the "It's your fault -- You made me hurt you" excuse, in a domestic violence case.

And yet, she used the same excuse to defend her own violence!

Oh, dear one....

Actually, that dovetails into one of my favorite tales from academia, where a lecturer on physiology is discoursing on the properties of semen. Turns out, by weight, it's overwhelmingly water....but, when dried, there is quite a bit of sugars to keep the sperm motile, and just a wee bit of protein. Whereupon a young lady interjected, "but it doesn't taste sweet!"....and as the implications of her comment filled the room, the lecturer replied, "the taste-buds for sweetness are concentrated at the tip of the tongue."

And, now that I've gotten that one out -- it's a generic thing -- I'm sure that everyone has heard assurances that a young lad wouldn't come somewhere that soon glowed when the right color ultraviolet was used. The couch, the cooch, the bed, the nightstand, the walls, the ceiling.....when the series came out about Masters + Johnson, I found out that they had coined the term "ejaculatory inevitability" for a distinct point on the male arousal spectrum.....and thus is science advanced.

380 Uh.... doesn't the dolt realize that the NSA has not stopped a single Operation due to Snowden?

We know more about what they are doing... but they are still doing EVERYTHING they were doing before. Posted by: Romeo13 at March 23, 2014 11:36 PM

Yesterday the NYT published an article about the NSA's continuing spying on China communications giant Huawei

At first I thought; that's what the NSA is supposed to be for .But when you look at it a second time, you realize it doesn't have squat to do about national security and everything to do with industrial espionage in order to smear the Chinese company for the sole benefit of Cisco and IBM

Interview #4 means that they can't really afford you but haven't totally convinced themselves that they can't live without you. So, they're parading you among the VPs and saying, "can any of you do this, so we don't have to hire this guy?" -- and the VPs are all looking at the credenza or the floor.

Dude, I've been in corporate accounting. I had you pegged.

BTW -- one of the funniest (not to me, it was a pain in the ass) thing that I experienced as a corporate controller was a VP Sales who was going "so, when do we finalize my company car arrangements?" Eight. Months. After. all the contracts were signed and he'd come on board. Accountants have to enforce the written-down deals, so it was frustrating to me on that level, but the fact that he was still negotiating his compensation 8 months after he had an office showed an admirable level of brass in his cojones. BTW, he got it.....and, even better, he was worth it.

You bring those POs in, and you'll find that the total wonks in the accounting department are all going "he may be a total asshole, but he's OUR asshole." and (this may actually be a surprise to you) totally behind you getting a raise and/or bonuses. Sales and accountants are totally, totally, totally, totally different personality types....and are unlikely to schmooze....but accountants positively worship ROI, and if you can demonstrate that every buck they pay you brings in more than $1.01 in value, you'll get respect.....and if you bring in $1.20 they'll start being fans.....and if it's $2, slum it sometime and ask 'em how they can help you out -- you might just be astounded.

All parents reach the mean age when their children become teenagers...

We know this, because the little darlings keep saying "You're so mean!"...when we tell them:

"No. You're not getting a tattoo." ---> "You're so mean!"

"No. You aren't staying out till midnight." ---"You're so mean!

"And NO. Your boyfriend is not going up to your room." ---"You're so MEAN!"

Net or gross? If you actually know the net (it's much more squirrelly than gross) and if you're really doin' 4:1, there probably are damp panties whenever you walk by.....and maybe some damp boxers, too.

But I suspect you're doin' it wrong. Here's the thing, though -- ask the accounting geeks what's "right" and they'll tell you. Do it, and they'll adore you. Work with 'em, and they'll pump that love all the way into the boardroom.

521 I find that church sign quote a really stupid one. What does that mean-"live life so fully"? As far as I know Westboro Baptist Church-which was a hideous mainly family cult group that was as far from Christianity as I can perceive of-picketed because they thought God was in the business of judging the world harshly entirely because of homosexuality. I don't agree with that, but I don't know what "live life so fully" means in that context. Maybe if it said "Live life like Christ so that Westboro Baptist will picket your funeral" but people driving by can think living life fully means "going for the gusto" or doing whatever you want to do.

I've been failing at that for 20 years. The only time I need an alarm clock is if I plan to sleep LESS than four hours.

Posted by: GnuBreed at March 24, 2014 12:45 AM (cHZB7)

527 It's possible that is what they intended but as far as a I know-and I'm hardly an expert on Westboro Baptist techniques-they picketed the funerals of service people among others because they thought "everything" was a judgment of God because of homosexuality including 9/11. I disagree So is this a coded message by the church that supporting gay marriage means you're living life fully? I'm not trying to start a debate here on homosexuality; I loathe those. I just find it a very imprecise message. As far as the church I'm for what one Bishop calls "keeping the main the main thing which is to make disciples for the transformation of the world", and when we disagree with one another to deal with each other as noted in Ephesians 4 with patience, gentleness, humility and bearing with one another in love. That means mutual respect, conversation and genuine love as means relaine on the Holy spirit. As fas as their public persona Westboro didn't demonstrate that at all and neither would Christians who want to urinate on Phelps' grave.

532 528 Urinating on a grave, as a claim of wanting to do, is nothing more than a shorthand for highly disrespecting that person's views while alive. A very common shorthand.

A close friend was once married to a woman I strongly disliked, and believe you me that was a shared distaste. He divorced her finally a lot of years ago. I'm sure I threatened to piss on her grave several times; as it turns out, she died a few years ago of cancer.

My friend even asked me if I planned to find her grave. Nope, I responded. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and she is cold. I outlived her.

Now, Jane Fonda? Get back to me after the news is announced and we'll see if I've had an 'attitude adjustment'.

533 I don't even hate Jane Fonda all that much; about the same as any other traitorous scum that has ever held American citizenship. What I hate is all the media glory heaped in her direction for her 'brave stance'.

So its the symbol she represents.

534 527 >> Now, see, this is exactly the sort of reason that someone in my position wouldn't completely depend on alarms and such.

I take it you failed at getting 8 hours of sleep, minor god.

I've been failing at that for 20 years. The only time I need an alarm clock is if I plan to sleep LESS than four hours.

It was barely three hours, and the shuttle won't be here for another two hours. I am so hosed.

The whole concept of "we're going to retroactively validate our political position by preemptively throwing away any gains from any other position" is horribly repulsive, and really illustrates the difference between ideology and reality.

537 I just know that this is going to shock a lot of people, but there's virtually nothing open around here at 3 AM on a Monday.

542 528>> Sorry to disagree with you FS, but for the most part Christians who disagreed with the Westboro Baptists stood by and disavowed themselves of the actions taken by Phelps and his family. If someone pissed on Phelps' grave it would be no great travesty. He's dead and gone and he'll be judged by God. His memory and what it is he stood for are what is being sullied. If there is a line, can I get a fast pass?

543 Brit Hume reports Mrs. Obumbles is staying in a $8000 per night hotel room in China. What the hell, she must be thinking, its all borrowed money anyway and our grandchildren will never know that the debt comes from Obama family vacations. http://bit.ly/1mq2moH

550 Aaah, the beautiful Barrett Fifty - one of those guns which should come with a pre-written referral to an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in shoulder injuries. I would like anyone who wanted to own one of these to be a member of the 50-cal shooters' association (or similar) and to have written proof of a day's familiarisation course run by existing owners, so they have a good grasp of just what it is they're about to buy, how expensive it's going to be to feed and care for, and how much room they realistically require to shoot it to its limits (to say nothing of the backstop issues). _Then_ let them at the store, and good luck to 'em.
