Your Government Servants at Work: Operation Something Bruin
What do U.S. Forest Service wildlife officers do when they've been ordered to infiltrate bear-poaching gangs, but they can't actually find any poaching gangs? Well they get creative...and became poachers themselves.
In late 2010 through 2011, under time constraints, and possibly due to not finding any illegal activity, Arnold and Webb resorted to various schemes to try to entice the hunters to break laws.
During one hunter's trial in Haywood County, agents admitted to buying illegal bait for bears in Tennessee, and placing it in a hunter's yard in Graham County. Hunters witnessed the officers killing at least four of the ten bears that were taken. These agents, against the advice of hunters, removed the bears' gallbladders and called hunters from surrounding counties to try to get them to participate in the illegal selling of bear parts. The hunters refused to take part in this illegal activity. These are only two of the many tactics used in attempts to entrap hunters of Western North Carolina.
But it gets worse because Someone Must Be Arrested no matter what. And so they arrested all the hunters they tried to frame along with their friends. And arrested them again.
After state and federal wildlife officials arrested these "so-called" poachers in February, 2013, the state dismissed all charges on some of them in April, 2013. Some hunters were arrested again in June, 2013 by United States Forest Service officials.
To date none of the hunters have been convicted and several have been acquitted after a trial. Meanwhile all the officers involved got awards and commendations.
In recent news, it has been reported that six U.S. Forest Service (USFS) employees from Western North Carolina were awarded "Law Enforcement and Investigations Awards" by the USFS for their roles in "Operation Something Bruin", a four-year, multi-agency investigation targeting "bear poachers" in WNC and surrounding states, resulting in arrests in February 2013.
Also, in October, the National Wildlife Federation bestowed "prestigious conservation honors" on Sgt. Chad Arnold, an officer from Charlotte with the Special Investigations Unit of the N.C. Wildlife Commission. Arnold was named "Wildlife Enforcement Officer of the Year", and the Commission was named the "Natural Resources Agency of the Year", according to a press release from the N.C. Wildlife Commission.
And Jesus fucking wept.
Well the Palestinians are willing to kill their own children in order to attack Israelis so why wouldn't they kill puppies too. Reason #16 why I've become indifferent to the fate of the Palestinian people.
Our Best and Brightest At Work
Dealing with all the important crises in the world.
For some reason I thought this was resolved after the fall of the Soviet Union but apparently Russia still has an enclave on the Baltic. Kaliningrad is not connected to the rest of Russia and is only about 86 square miles. But Putin would dearly love to make it a contiguous part of Russia if he could.
Cities Where I'll Be Drinking Outside in 2014
However, drinking in public-on the street, the sidewalk, in the alley, behind the tool shed, etc.- remains for the most part restricted, because no one wants to see what happens when a pack of wine coolers finds itself between two co-eds. Or at least that's what the authorities tell us. I for one do want to see what happens.
HuffPo finally made itself useful by examining municipal laws, zoning codes, and torts in all 50 states to find where in this country Americans enjoy the legal freedom to drink in public. If you need me, you'll find me in the following locations.
Love at First Shot: Man, Woman Become Couple After He Accidently Shoots Her
If this sounds insane, I can testify that it happens more often than you'd expect. When one of my cousins got shot in the knee by a guy she kinda liked, it was True Love after that and they were inseparable. Apparently Cupid works via alcohol, possibly-loaded .22 rifles, and regret. They ended up getting married but it turns out that the kind of guy who might accidently shoot you when drunk might also have other more serious issues. So no happy ending there. Sometimes a shared shooting just isn't enough to build a life-long loving relationship on.
5 Insane Crimes That People Just Made Up
In the early morning hours of March 1, 1993, Yonkers, New York, police officer Thomas Drogan was taken to a medical center because his face was a mass of bruises and cuts. He had been brutally attacked and beaten up by a huge, unidentified black male.
Since a cop had been assaulted and Drogan's story of the incident was backed up by other officers, a police alert was immediately issued and the area was thoroughly searched. At least one person was detained and questioned, but no arrests were ever made. It looked like the Case of the Giant Cop Puncher would forever remain a mystery.

The problem is that this waist-slimming look only really works when you already have a narrow waist.

Part of the windows went above the ceiling tile and the pigeons would find a broken pane and get in but they could never figure out how to get back out.
So there they'd be running back and forth across the ceiling and making noise and we'd have to stick our heads up into the drop area to try to chase them out toward their entry point.
I hate pigeons. Flying rats is too good description for them.
More like mobile quano makers with the IQ of a rock.

It's just a sign of how far the UN has gone in the age of Obama. You think that crap would've happened while Bolton was there? But under Obama, Susan Rice is sitting passively by, or skipping meetings altogether to lunch with friends. Samantha Poers is even worse because she agrees with it.
No US to keep the Israel-haters in check. Or the UN gun-grabbers in check. Or the UN AGW control-freaks in check. All while we're still funding so much of it.

Went to see Pop today and he was adamant that everything was copacetic, he is in physical rehab because he wasn't eating, so he lost muscle mass and wasn't able to walk or stand. They are taking care of him and expect he will be just fine as long as he eats.
But on to the gal pal. Apparently she is the wife of some guy who does contract work for several of the residents in the retirement community where he lives. We were able to come up with a name...and she has a record, for 1) driving without a license (did I mention she has Pop's car?), 2) cocaine possession and attempting to smuggle cocaine into a prison, and 3) possession of paraphernalia in Daytona (three separate incidents).
Of course Pop is extremely thankful that she is there to take care of things for him, and since he's in his right mind there isn't much we can do, and trying to convince him that the woman is trouble is so far a losing proposition.
Daughter has a power of attorney so she's going to go talk to the bank in the morning and see if there has been any funny business, if there has we are going to just call the sheriff. I have instructed my children, if I ever get that stubborn and crotchety, to bonk me on the head and dump me off at the old sailors home in Meridian MS.

So I guess I should explain a bit about bears and gall bladders.
Bear gall bladders are part of TCM., traditional Chinese medicine. It's not medicine at all. It's just an Asian version of good old ass-ignorant stone-age witch-doctor sympathetic magic: if I eat part of this big strong healthy animal, it of course logically follows that I will become strong and healthy.
Horseshit. But try telling the Chinese this.
So, since there have been a flood of legal and illegal Chinese into Commiefornia in recent decades, there has been an absolutely massive boom in the illegal poaching of bears in the state. For no other reason than to extract the gall bladder and other TCM bits. I'm sure we can all agree that no one could possibly have predicted this consequence.
Anyway, given the metric shit-ton of bear poaching that's going on, and Commiefornia's allegedly "green" credentials, you would figure that the state would be coming down like a ton of bricks on this practice. That those caught at it would be having the book thrown at them.
Again: horseshit. Is not happening. Will not happen.
But wait. Why not? What's going on?
Official policy here (from state, and near as I can figure from federal, game officers) is that the poachers are Strange Newcomers Unfamiliar With Our Ways. And that it would surely be unfair, and worse, would reflect bias against ethnics, if such persons were to be actually prosecuted. Or worse, punished.
Needless to say, this argument of innocent ignorance of the law doesn't hold much water.
Commiefornia spends absolutely astonishing amounts of money on translating every single official document into every language and dialect you could possibly imagine, including of course both Mandarin and Cantonese. The only way anyone could be failing to learn the game laws here would be if they were an absolutely literal illegal alien who had just arrived in a flying saucer from Tau Ceti.
Meanwhile, if you're a native-born, English-speaking, pale penis person, and you pull in a trout that's a tenth of a millimeter short, you're practically going to San Quentin.
As the old joke has it, "This really isn't about the hunting, is it?"
No. It's not really about the hunting, or about the poaching.
It's about the fact that Commiefornia has a leftist state government, and the USA have a leftist federal government, who have jointly decided, in classic Brechtian fashion, to "dissolve the people and elect another".
The people who are doing the poaching? They're the elect. They're a part of the New People upon whom the glorious new leftist state is to be built. And, as always happens, as favorites of the state, they are effectively immune to its edicts.
Now if you're one of the Previous People who are to be dissolved? And you run afoul of the state's edicts? The state will spare you not an eyelash of its legal ferocity. You'll be punished twice as hard to make up for those who aren't being punished at all.
So _that_ is why these stings are being run in the Carolinas and not in Commiefornia. Because if they were run out here, members of an officially protected ethnic class might be the ones getting stung. Can't have that! No way! Go find some rednecks down south and try to get them instead.

There's a great little part of Futurama, the cartoon, that captures that. The cartoon happens 1,000 years in our future. Fry, the main character, is depressed, and sitting in his apartment, toying with a super-expensive antique cassette player that he bought because he has become super-rich. He presses play, and he hears "I like big butts and I cannot lie. You other brothers can't deny." Another hand reaches out and stops the tape. It's Leela, the one-eyed woman played by the same actress who was Peg on Married...With Children. She says "You can't just sit here in the dark listening to classical music." Classical. Music.

That is the most difficult thing. His major problem is he's alone, which makes him depressed, which means he doesn't do anything and he doesn't eat right, which means he is sitting there and atrophying, which is why he can't stand or walk. If there was someone nearby who could get him out and do things he'd be OK...and he waffles between trying to make everybody feel guilty because he's all alone and telling everyone he doesn't need anybody's help.

Ever notice how the more cornbally, weird or off the wall the Code Name is the more likely the results will be nonexistent or negative?
Yeah, there's a reason for that; whoever thinks up that sort of code name and thinks it's cool also isn't too bright as to operational security, justification and end results and they tend to be in charge.
And lots of times people get hurt.

I'm still uncertain about Rand myself. I hear a whole lot of people saying that Ron (and the abrasive Ronulans) have put them off of the Paul family entirely.
Foreign policy seems to be a big part of that objection.
I put it to you as a thought experiment: imagine that Ron Paul had been elected in, say, 2008. And that he had practiced since then the sort of frankly pretty radical isolationism that he has consistently preached.
Why, tarnation! Who knows what would have happened? Let's put on our thinking caps for a second and imagine.
Syria and Libya would have disintegrated into chaos. Iraq would be well on its way. Trashcanistan would continue to be the planet's reeking syphilitic bunghole. Iran would be about to get the bomb. China would be steadily pushing to re-create the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere under new management. Russia would be slowly re-absorbing bits of the old Warsaw Pact countries. The EU would be simultaneously growing outward while rotting internally. Venezuela and Argentina would be regressing socialist quagmires.
In other words, things would look... pretty much about as they do now. Less expensively.
There's an old saying that "events are in the saddle, and riding man". They are.
The Paulian case is pretty simply stated: America is going to have to realize that (a) some of the bad things in the world are not amenable to interventionist policy by America, as much as we might like for it to be the contrary, and that (b) of the bad things which _might_ be thus amenable to interventionalism, we can't financially afford any longer to be addressing, as much as we might also like for that to be the contrary.

This (pipe dope) is fine if you are firmly convinced you will never ever have to unmake those connections. The stuff looks like it will be a slippery goo forever, but believe me, it sets up and becomes very stiff and hard to work. I have installed, de-installed, and re-installed many pumps and I much prefer teflon tape. The stuff is cheap, so don't skimp on the number of wraps you use.

On the "family reunification" forms, people who are bringing in elderly immigrant parents (who never paid into Medicare or Social Security) must officially attest that they will care for those elders via their own private means, and not allow them to become a public charge.
It's meaningless and not enforced. The kids dump their parents into the American eldercare entitlement state as soon as they are able. And get away with doing so.
Meanwhile, those of you who did pay into Medicare and Social Security are inevitably going to get less payout, to cover for such freeloaders.

Another tape user here.
Wrap in the correct direction. If in the wrong direction, tightening will tend to unwrap it. Don't wrap all the way up to the last interior threads, just partway. If you wrap all the way up, you may get tape fragments inside once tightened. Don't use tape on a gas fitting. Not even "special tape made for gas". Use dope on those.

Both the fiancee and I had the same initial reaction, but he's got doctor's letters and everything (anyone who has never been chewed-out by the BH might think that's overstated....) -- and I continue to suspect that he might have staged it, or just closed his eyes on the freeway after considering what 16 hours of acute failure analysis might feel like.

Funny that you mention that - unless somebody attempts to, or succeeds in, opening an account in your name, there's little the PD can help you with. I recently started receiving mail *almost* in my name, but with a different last name, along with all kinds of wedding-related junk mail for two other people of a different foreign origin than myself. Local PD couldn't do anything for me. I have to sit and wait for whoever these people are to use my SSN, as opposed to my address before there's any kind of legal redress possible.

If you have credit cards, call the companies and put fraud alerts on your accounts if you haven't already. And document everything. Keeping records will come in handy if and when they do go full ID theft on you.

I cynically suspect you'll find that most Iowa corn farmers are quite happy with high food prices and are quite unconcerned with "the environment".
Money money money.
Whenever someone says, "This isn't about the money?" It's about the money.
We'll never get rid of the ethanol scam -- and various other regionally profitable scams -- until such time as we get rid of the idea that certain states should be uniquely positioned and uniquely privileged in the political nominating process.
I think a decent argument could be made on 14th Amendment grounds that giving a voter in Iowa or New Hampshire or whatnot a more politically potent vote than a voter who lives elsewhere is an equal-protection issue.

No one wants to ship anything to Hawaii.
I'm perplexed by this, because if there is a single modern logistic success story, it is the plummeting cost of moving goods by sea courtesy of standardized shipping containers, and big efficient ships made to handle lots of those.
I've seen figures that suggest it costs more to truck a container 100km inland than it does to move it all the way across the ocean.
Not to mention that in a Hawaiian context, there are plenty of tourist jets landing every day with extra room for belly cargo.
It was extremely expensive back in the day to ship stuff to Hawaii, but I figured that would come out in the wash as the logistics and technology improved. I still wonder why not.

Ah. I mentioned only 2008, not 2012, for a reason. As Ace mentioned in the last podcast, 2012 is the disaster, the confounding thing. 2008 is easy to understand without positing a socialist electorate. Hope and change, first black President, cult of personality, the whole nine yards. 2012 was...what? A confounding thing. You can say we have a socialist electorate now, yes. We all have our own hypotheses, and that is a viable one, but one I do not share. My view is more simple. Carter was not re-elected because he was clearly a screwup, and the media portrayed that. Obama was clearly a screwup, and the media hid that with an unprecedented fervor. So he got the usual benefit of the doubt for an incumbent, undeserved.

I never cared for Carson back in the day, but in retrospect, I appreciate how he frequently salted the Tonight Show guest list with people who were not sports or entertainment celebrities, but instead were ready to talk about ideas.
Some of those ideas were solid, some were loopy. But they were stuff you were unlikely to hear on any other mainstream television venue of the era.

They won't pass amnesty after the primaries are over, not with the election around the corner. They will wait until after the election to pass something like that to maximize the time until the next primary/election. Of course you need to factor in the GOP penchant to step on each and every landmine laid out in front of them, so they may do just that and wait until the primaries are over. After all, many people will vote for them regardless.

Then he will find out, like Arlen Specter and Charles Johnson, that his only real value to them was being someone on the "right" that would say bad things about the right.

I don't think we actually disagree. I said that I think they will wait until after the elections this year and go full tard in the lame duck session. After all, then the next election will be over two years away. They don't want to dampen enthusiasm from the base right before an election that might give them more power.
But past history has shown that they don't have common sense, so . . . YMMV

This is the exact shit that John Jay, Hamilton, and the rest of the founding fathers saw clearly -- a huge government of unchecked powers can hide unpopular policies on simple, understandable issues behind mountains and piles of bullshit. If the Federal government were run within the provisions of Article I, section 8 of the Constitution, there would be nowhere to hide.
There would also be no Department of Labor or Department of Agriculture; the Department of the Interior would be significantly neutered because the Federal Government wouldn't own or control any land beyond the District of Columbia, military bases, courthouses, and post offices. There'd be no Department of Commerce, HHS, or HUD. The Department of Transportation would be limited to street signs (couldn't erect a green circle labeled "STOP").
The Department of Education would be purged, as would the Department of Energy.
Just imagine the creativity hat could be unleashed upon the world if those departments were summarily forced back onto the states.....

Well, they can't get their facts straight. They argue for biological superiority over a LGBT individual, but every other situation they blame the environment the individual is raised in. Since many pedophiles and murderers just grew up in bad households and just need treatment. Which is good for them, because if it were all rooted in biology, unless eugenics makes a stunning return, how can they use facism to make mankind "better?"

I invite all interested parties to examine comparative educational performance of the USA since the Department of Education (a creation of the Carter administration) came into being.
Spending more for getting less pretty much sums it up.
As for the Department of Energy, there are a few remaining glowing embers of competence at the bottom of the giant ash pile. I have no idea how to save those while getting rid of the huge topweight of inert or toxic crap in that department.

Just as an aside -- funny thing, while I'm on the road....email gets flaky. I'll call you instead sometime mid-day Wednesday, after I get my shit together.
I've got to say, though, I'm just so tickled to be back here. Grabbed a fast-food dinner and jokingly noted that I lived in a spot where the vendor had only one single store within a 60-mile distance from me -- and another customer chimed in that she and her family had bailed-out of California 20 years ago because it was no place to raise kids. I don't even have kids, and the thought that mind-control anti-growth crisis-leveraging death-worshiping eugenic statist race-baiting bullshit isn't the only proper channel for "it's for the children" is like a breath of fresh air.
Bonus points for the moron who correctly guesses the chain (and I can think of two different ones that fit the criteria).

I call bullshit on this "McCain goes off the reservation" idea.
He's no fucking "Maverick" of the GOP!
He's a 70's era liberal climber, who married into a beer distributorship, in AZ, who figured out early, (in D.C. post-Vietnam btw) that his name as a war-hero aka, military man was pure fucking poison to the Democrats at the time.
He bullied his way into Republican politics in AZ playing the "war hero" card because that was the only game going at the time, for him.
Bullshitted Barry Goldwater on his death-bed from what tales are told but also knows more about The Keating 5 than you or I ever will.
When the fuck was he ever "on any reservation", I ask?
His record as a Senator has been one of a small minded, mean and petty man, more jealous of his personal "dignity" and the perquisites signifying thereof than anything else.
He will never go down as an hero of the Republican Party. He will never go down as an hero who fought for the State of Arizona.
Perhaps there is a cloakroom somewhere, where he and Teddy K. will share pineapples. I don't know...I'm not a theologian!
I fervently hope though, that that kind of club remains as exclusive as befits the "dignity" of an United States Senator.

Oh, yikes....oh, no, Deety -- I'm terribly sorry....got carried away....you put it so perfectly....absolute and total summary of the man and his methods.
This is so embarrassing....can I help wipe away the ichor? Kleenex? Can I maybe run into another room for some paper towels?

McInsane is an egomaniacal ***HOLE.
He definitely sees himself as part of the "elite ruling class" over us "peasants".
You'll also notice his "reaching across the aisle" always benefits the dems. Coincidence? I think not.

Ok.
I just wasn't sure what the deal was - I never could make plans, and not sure what yours are.
Weather permitting, I'm going to try to knock out a quick job in the morning, then I guess wait.

If you've got a gig, do it. Do it fully, do it completely, do it with honor, and get your ass paid. I'll be there when you're done.

And, BTW, if you get an afternoon gig or an overnight one, take 'em. You shouldn't be waiting. I'll wait.

I can't imagine what it would be like to have to bury a loved longtime spouse.
Strength, bravery and sympathy to your father.

I've posted several times lately on this and I promise this is closure. I don't want to dwell and bring people down. Just had an idea that writing this out might me help remember this confusing time and might be of help for others who have recently gone thru the same thing or others who soon will.
We buried my Mom today. She died 3/15 but stuff took it out to her services being yesterday and today. Things went well. Dad said the tough one was today, the finality. We have Dad here w/ us here for the next 2 nights.
Now my folks were together for 62 years, they started dating at 15. Md. at 18, 2 boys shortly after.
Dad seems to be doing OK, but not really. He delegated a lot of the arrangements to us, fine and we glad to help. He just seems to be hanging on too long in all aspects.
I'm worried when he leaves how this will come down on him when he's back home alone.
Well, we have to go back to the funeral home tomorrow to pick stuff up, better get to bed.
RIP Mom, and send some vibes to Dad that he will be OK.

As I've alluded to before, it is his decision alone to make -- whether to associate with the living or the dead....with the absolute certainty that he will eventually do the latter. For each day, however, the living are permitted to put forth their most alluring experiences, their most engaging conundrums, their most endearing affections, and their most supportive embraces.....while the dead (under the rules) may only replay memories.
And the end of the trail is written as well -- there must come a time that he embraces his loved ones in the beyond, being that the logical alternatives are so dire -- who could wish on someone that he be a spirit from beyond more attached to the living than his beloved in eternity? Who could wish that he might live on, forsaking living contact?
We all will come to such a time. Let's just hope we decide wisely.

.nu is Niue and island state in the S. Pacific associated with N.Z.
Now where the servers ACTUALLY are located I haven't a clue.
They do seem a little peppier lately.
