I warned you that you'd get nothing but did you believe me...
"To be conservative, then, is to prefer the familiar to the unknown, to prefer the tried to the untried, fact to mystery, the actual to the possible, the limited to the unbounded, the near to the distant, the sufficient to the superabundant, the convenient to the perfect, present laughter to utopian bliss."

The Lost Art of Dueling With Pistols
Pistol duels have largely gone out of style in the United States. The modern version of "Sir, I demand satisfaction!" is now "You'll be hearing from my lawyer." And that's probably for the best. By the end of the 19th century, advances in firearms technology had made pistol duels unsporting. Machined, multi-shot guns with rifled barrels and reliable cartridges meant that both parties in a duel stood a good chance of dying. During the heyday of duels in the United States (the 18th and early 19th centuries) dueling pistols were handmade and generally smoothbore, single-shot, black powder, flint-lock devices that were "sporting" at the typical 30-40 foot distance at which most duels were fought . . .
Often, the duelers didn't even fire their pistols at each other. A shot into the air or the ground frequently sufficed to show that both parties had the courage to duel.but also the good sense not to. This may have been what Alexander Hamilton expected to happen when he fought his infamous and fatal duel with Vice President Aaron Burr.

Cause red beans and rice didn't miss her...
There was one event that really made me think that I should do a song about this, which was irritating the shit out of me. Amy and I were at a hotel on tour, when we saw one of the Spuds MacKenzie ads for Budweiser during the Super Bowl. You'd see these girls in the ad: Each one was shaped like a stop sign, with big hair [and] straight up-and-down bird legs. There's nothing wrong with that, but I was so sick of that shit. Now, Amy never said anything about all this until she realized I was so in favor of her physique. She was an actress, and she started admitting that she felt like she lost a lot of parts because of her hourglass figure. I knew for a fact that many artists felt that if they didn't use a skinny-model-type woman in their video, then mainstream America would reject the song. But I do not agree with that: If you look at Dolly Parton at her peak, a lot of white guys were like "daammn!" At the same time, when I did casting calls for videos, curvy women wouldn't show up. They thought they didn't have a chance. Unless you were in the hood, women who had curves -- and I'm not talking about women who are shaped like me, with a gut, but women who ran five miles a day, with a washboard, six-pack stomach and a nice round, beautiful, supple ass -- wore sweaters around their waist! Bottom line: Black men like curves. When they're crooning to women about how beautiful they are in an R&B song, the ladies you see in the video don't reflect what those guys like.

Things I learned this week....
1) I have a heart, albeit one of unknown quality
2) my spermatocele is not in fact a third amigo for Little Sven
3) Sven is cordially invited to see if he has to wear a Darth Vader Mask to sleep after they probe me an evening this week for a whole night.
4) My diastolic is ~ 15-25 points over what it was at the start of the year...
each ten points doubles your risk stroke...
and then... *blink*

I find it incredulous that Kagan and Sotomayor were dismissive of the Hobby Lobby position and offered the simple solution of just pay the fine, when they are hump bumpers who play for the home team and have no need for birth control. But they love their sybians!

Another possible Pleisto survival were the mini-elephants on the Greek islands. I think the last of 'em were on Thera - at least, the Atlantis legend notes them.
But, they got a bowl of Kaboom and that was it.
A mini-elephant as a pet would be pretty cool.

The Obama administration has decided to give extra time to Americans who say that they are unable to enroll in health-care plans through the federal insurance marketplace by the March 31 deadline.
Federal officials confirmed Tuesday evening that all consumers who have begun to apply for coverage on HealthCare.gov, but who do not finish by Monday, will have until about mid-April to ask for an extension.

Shopping for a nine-TWO-four? Holy moly.
Add two to that second digit. You'll thank me later.
I keep seeing decent early Datsun Z cars out here in Commiefornia for reasonable prices. I would bet the biggest challenge is getting to be finding replacement body metal after fender-benders. Headlight buckets on them seem to be made of the least rust resistant steel alloy ever devised by humanity.
As for the RX-7 listing, you have to love that they have it as "12 cylinders".

When you get a kidney transplant, they usually just leave your original kidneys in your body and put the 3rd kidney in your pelvis.
They'll re-harvest a transplant organ for another patient if possible.
Parts is parts.

"Game of Thrones" had realistic character development and wasn't PC at all - until season 3 (and even there it was restricted to maybe one scene).
"Pillars of Heaven" was just preachy and bad.
"Tudors" and "Borgias", meh.
"Rome": awesome until they ran out of cash.
So: how's "White Queen"?

"The Ottoman Empire still existed the last time the Cubs won the World Series."
And when the Cubs win again, SMOD will shortly follow thereafter.
That two of Tyler's grandchildren are living is pretty amazing. I still think it's weird that my paternal grandfather was born in 1870 - just 5 years after the Civil War ended and well before there were World Series. He didn't marry until he was 40 - and then he married a woman half his age. He died in 1939, when he was 79 -quite old but not incredibly so. And my father didn't get married until his mid-30's.
I haven't clicked on the link or worked out the math with the Tylers - but I would say if men marry and father kids late in life, that's how you get these long streches of times covered by just a few generations (conversely, if a few generations of women crank out babies in their early teens, you can get a woman who is a great-great grandma by the time she's ready to collect social security).

THANKFULLY I was not there to witness this. It would have destroyed me.
A friend saw a couple of idiot twentysomethings in backwards baseball caps being introduced to one of the last surviving WWI vets, in a wheelchair and in poor health. The old gaffer was a living breathing historical treasure. Someone who remembered Douglas MacArthur personally. The sort of guy where you just want to sit down and listen quietly and respectfully as he opens a window into the past for you.
At first he seemed gratified for the attention.
Then it became crystal clear that the youngsters had absolutely no idea of what it was he had gone through and what he had fought for, or even where or when.
"So, like, you were there at the beginning, man, at Pearl Harbor, right? And then you went from there to Vietnam? Or was that the Civil War? I can't remember."
Imagine you and your buddies struggling and suffering, dying and being maimed, coughing up a lung and being blinded by gas, many of you thinking you had made it through safely to the armistice and then being cut down by the Great Influenza afterward, and then many decades later, meeting a bunch of arrested adolescents who don't know their asses from a hole in the ground, in an illiterate ahistorical culture that doesn't know the difference between your war and The War Of Jenkins' Ear.
Death must have been welcome.

Was very surprised a few weks ago however, when folks both at Hot Air and here were defending Carter's decision to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow due to Afghanistan. As I recall, that was one of the major reasons Reagan won by a landslide.
Also last night, Carter was claiming he told Brezhnev in 1979 that if they tried to take over *anything other than Afghanistan*, he'd respond with military force. Wonder if that's backed up by the truth.

This is to the best of my understanding one of the few things Carter has said recently that is actually true.
Geopolitical strategists, to include Carter's national security adviser Zbig Brzezinski (yes, father of the MSNBC ditz), were freaking out about the thought of a massive Soviet push south into the Persian Gulf states. As well they bloody well should have been.
The Shah of Iran had been meant as a bulwark against southern Soviet expansionism. Which is why Iran ended up with the F-14 Tomcat, the only export customer allowed to buy in. Plus a bunch of other top-shelf military hardware. (Some of which they never got, such as the _Kidd_ class destroyers.)
Then the Shah fell, and the Sovs settled into Afghanistan, and the Beltway Bandit analysts began to panic. Again, as well they ought. Dumb shits got consistently out-thunk and out-played by their counterparts in Moscow Centre.
Basically, what the Carter doctrine said was that if the Soviets went any closer to the Gulf oil fields than Afghanistan, the USA would go tactical nuclear to stop them. Would have had to. There was no chance of stopping a Red Army push with conventional arms. The force posture was all wrong. Too Euro-centric. And too hollow after years of Carter underbudgeting.
And of course a regional tactical nuclear fight would almost inevitably have escalated to strategic nuclear volleys between the USA and USSR. Shiver.
A really big part of the Reagan re-armament push was to forestall the possibility of these kinds of nightmare scenarios, where the only way out was to go nuclear, and where going nuclear carried inevitable escalation risk.

Quote of the Day
"To be conservative, then, is to prefer the familiar to the unknown, to prefer the tried to the untried, fact to mystery, the actual to the possible, the limited to the unbounded, the near to the distant, the sufficient to the superabundant, the convenient to the perfect, present laughter to utopian bliss."

A truck driver (with proper credentials to get on base & the pier) got down to the pier.
As he approached the quarterdeck, a petty officer saw him acting erratically and approached. A struggle ensued, contractor gets POs gun & kills another another sailor coming to aid.
Contractor is then taken out by security forces.

After the Obama administration decreed Nidal Hasan's _openly admitted_ jihadi terror shooting rampage at Fort Hood to have been merely "workplace violence", I will believe anything.
I previously would have thought and hoped that such an obtuse and insulting declaration would have led to, for instance, all of the Joint Chiefs walking into the Oval Office and resigning en masse, on the spot. That nothing even close to this happened is extremely dispiriting.

I can't begin to explain how much I enjoy being here. Was talking to a quilt-store owner as the BH selected fabric, and there's a weird dynamic. People are overwhelmingly polite and well-spoken, but there's this undercurrent that there's some testing involved.....and that makes the BH a trifle uneasy, just that the testing is there. OTOH, I keep answering "fuck, yeah -- and twice on Thursdays!" to the tests, so it doesn't hit me quite the same way. Thing is, this is being done on a massive scale through the totalitarian monitoring of the internet, social media, emails, and cellphone data....so I really do feel uneasy about the idea that any interaction be analyzed for political content....but not one-at-a-time, informally.

Ahhh, crud -- don't have email archives on Traveler, the computer I have here. Do ask me again when I'm back in my lair, as I had links and stuff, and you might find it interesting.....but let me give you the context of the conversation -- Joffen's sister Sarah was asking me to help her understand John's state of mind, and I was telling her that I was honor-bound to give her anything she asked of me, but that the only means of fully understanding such a thing would involve taking on that state of mind herself -- which I would passionately and forcefully argue against. In the end, I believe that she threaded that needle and determined that she knew enough and would find no resolution in the other -- and, for that, I salute her -- and hope that her family heals and prospers in the future.

Democrats have spent a large amount of time in the last few weeks posturing Charles and David Koch, the billionaire oil tycoons who donate significant amounts of money to conservative causes and candidates, as the sort of bogeyman of the Republican Party. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid even blamed them in part for Russia annexing Crimea.
But according to a new bipartisan George Washington University Battleground Poll, that strategy may be less than fruitful. The poll shows 52% of Americans still donÂ’t even know who the Kochs are and another 11% have no opinion on them.
“Trying to make the Koch brothers into that red meat is going to be about as effective as what we tried to do for several cycles with George Soros,” Republican pollster Ed Goeas told reporters during a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.
As far as ReidÂ’s numbers go, the poll shows 25% of Americans donÂ’t know who he is and another 16% have no opinion on him.
That suggests Reid, someone many Americans donÂ’t care much about, going on the Senate floor multiple times a week to decry the actions of the Kochs, who a majority of Americans have never even heard of, may not be the most effective strategy for protecting a Democratic majority in the Senate come November.

Back in, if memory serves, the late 1970s or early 1980s, I was in a large shoe store here in northern Commiefornia, and they had one of the classic X-ray fitting machines.
The radiographic source had been removed, of course. They had a lit photograph in view when you looked through the viewer, of foot bones outlined within a ghostly shoe.
No one on the staff knew anything about the machine or its antecedents, or at least were not willing to fess up. They were all pretty young and so probably did not know anything about it firsthand, or even why the practice had come into disrepute. I suspect an older owner of the store had had the machine safed and then kept it around nostalgically.

Furthermore, his sister has visited us here and seen how we can maintain a healthy paranoia and yet care for each other deeply, and also moderates the guestbook -- and will post entries under PG-rated nics or partial names. If you care about Joffen's grieving family -- and I would hope you might -- please DO visit and leave condolences.....and this is where I get all mumbly 'cause the link is bookmarked in a computer 2300 miles away.

"John Tyler, who became president in 1841, has 2 living grandchildren"
I heard this a few years ago and I still can't believe it's true. I mean, John Tyler was born in 1790, a year after the Constitution went into effect. My Grandfather was born in 1921. This seems unpossible.
Posted by: Elephant in the Room at March 25, 2014 09:41 PM (Ggh94)
++++
According to my extensive research (at Wikipedia), Tyler was president from 1841-1845. He lived from 1790-1862. In 1842, in the midst of his presidency, his first wife, Leticia, died at the age of 52. He had had 8 children with her. He married his 2nd wife, Julia, in 1844. He was 54; she was 24. They went on to have 7 more children.
One of them, Lyon, is the one we are interested in for this exercise. He was born in 1853 (his father would have been 63 at the time). Lyon lived until 1935. Before he died, he had 6 children (again, by two wives). The two who are still alive, Lyon Jr, and Harrison, were born in 1924 and 1928, respectively. Lyon Sr. would have been 71 and 75 at the birth of those two children.
If that whole Idiocracy thing comes to pass, it won't be the Tyler family's fault.

I acted honorably at the time and at previous times, and I intend to act honorably in the future.
Look, guys -- I contacted him previously during an episode, and helped to talk him down from that. He seemed to be doing well with Chi and I faded my monitoring accordingly. On his last night, I had his (real) name, his city, his email address and his phone number, and vague memories of other discussions....but let's talk counterfactuals for a second -- Chi knew he had a Twitter page. I first saw it six days after I knew he was gone....and found an obscure location code that might have gotten the police (called within 8 minutes of my receipt of his jarring "farewell" email) to his location more quickly than the last previous communication he sent.
So I could regard myself as a failure because I didn't get all the crumbs left along the trail. But I don't. I stepped up when I could and did as best I could with what I had. I'm not ashamed, and I'm not proud. I hope that other morons might do the same for me in like circumstances, and I'd be happy if they did....but I'm not going to feel heroic or wonderful when we don't have Joffen around to BS with.

More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=5376
Posted by: The Political Hat at March 25, 2014 09:44 PM (AymDN)
++++
I clicked through to get to the source, and it is the stupid. Common Core's "wisdom" is as follows:
Add 26 + 17 by breaking apart numbers to make a ten.
Use a number that adds with the 6 in 26 to make a 10.
Since 6 + 4 = 10, use 4.
Think: 17 = 4 + 13.
Add 26 + 4 = 30.
Add 30 + 13 = 43.
So, 26 + 17 = 43.
That seems like the hard way to me. Of course, if you have paper and pencil, the easiest way is to put the numbers on top of each other and then add the ones column, carry over as necessary to the tens column, etc. As I'm sure anyone wasn't taught with Common Core learned when they were in first grade:
26
+17
-----
43
But, even if you don't have paper and pencil and have to do it in your head, they are still doing it the hard way. If you are used to adding figures with a paper and pencil, then you are already familiar with the method of grouping the ones and tens. So, 26 + 17, becomes 20 + 10 + 6 + 7, becomes, 30 + 13, which gives 43.
Why are they trying to fuck up our kids?

we have only had a couple that bent end-to-end without a break. I am worried that the project might fail. butt joints in the finish surface would suck unless they are extremely well done.

My perception may be affected here, though, by the fact that I've had terrible so-called "reubens" made by people who had no idea what the word means. At least this reuben pizza sort of sounds like a proper reuben.
One such place made its reubens with corned beef on rye (sounds good so far, huh?), but then added "sweet pickled cabbage" instead of sauerkraut, and "Gruyere cheese" (which had the texture of ABC gum still warm and soft from the chewer's mouth) instead of Swiss, and "tomato-dill aioli" instead of Thousand Island dressing.
It was to barf.

Why are they trying to fuck up our kids?
Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at March 26, 2014 01:36 AM (IN7k+) fnord (IN7k+)
Because they are fucking stupid. Teachers are so fucking stupid. They've just spent 4 years going to school to learn how to teach. They are taught using tried and true, classical teaching methods. And what do they use that to do? To teach them to try new stupid ideas that have no fucking hope of working. Why else would I as a Junior in High School be required to have MARKERS for AMERICAN HISTORY?
That's right we had to do art in high school American History as part of our grade. Oh sure she claimed that we wouldn't actually be judged on our art, but don't tell me she wasn't giving better grades to some girls who went all out on the "responses" to the notes we were taking.
Some days I really wish I knew where that dumbass bitch was so I could tell her what a shitty teacher she was and how I remember things from 8th grade American History a lot better than anything she attempted to teach. It'd probably sting her pretty good because she liked me and I was smarter than her.

If I might suggest --- when my parents were young a teacher had the right to send a misbehaving student home. Then the lawyers took over and schooling as a quest for excellence has been dying ever since.
School has become a nationalized babysitting service. Education is secondary to holding the inmates for a set number of hours.
Union or not, it is impossible to teach students that don't want to learn.

But if you look at women in the military today, they tend to be much cuter than you'd expect based on that old stereotype.
Female athletes are overall much cuter today, too, than they were thirty years ago.
This may have something to do with studies that have shown that a majority of today's women are physically attractive; said attractiveness would tend to spread across the spectrum of women's career choices.

Unfortunately, the old view was that any woman who joined the military was a whore.

Cheapskates that they were, I collected very few dimes. Oh, and I taught them that in order to 'own' a new word they had to be able to spell it, define it, and use it correctly in a sentence. Oh the horrors of their childhoods. The scars have lasted them a lifetime already.

So far to my limited memory it's:
Sugar
Salt
Butter
Oleomargarine
Transfats (whatever they are)
Cheese
Milk
Red meat
Any kind of meat
Fish (certain kinds)
Poultry
Eggs
Lard
Saccharine
Coffee
Cream
Non Homogenized milk
Veal
Liver
There's more but I don't remember them because I didn't change what I ate anyway.

Sometimes a book is so full of crap I cannot get past the first chapter. I'd make a terrible reviewer, as you have to read a book in its entirety to properly write about it. But here I go anyway.
The premise is that the health care system is already the product of massive government intervention, so much of the debate over Obamacare is arguing about the wrong things. All well and good but it starts off by offering four industries it claims would either not exist or exist in much reduced form without government involvement: railroads, the interstate highway system, the internet, and satellite communications.
The government's most important contribution to the first was to allow federally controlled land to be used. Which is to say, allowing citizens to something of value form empty wilderness. On the second, automobile manufacturing was already a core sector of the US economy. More and better roads were going to happen regardless of the level of federal enthusiasm. It was also understood that the next big war would involve the use of long range missiles, with rail being more vulnerable to disruption than roads. That a defense initiative had economic benefits is not a slam dunk testimonial to government meddling.
The section on the internet repeats a lot of myths about its creation and completely ignores the existence of networked BBS systems and commercial services like Compuserve coming about in the late 70s. The emergence of a network of networks was a matter of when, not if.
Finally, the author makes the blanket assumption that without the Space Program there would simply be no satellite in orbit today. Really? The concept and commercial potential of the communications satellite was first published by Arthur C. Clarke in the 40s, and several writer in both fiction and non-fiction had suggested how they believed the aircraft industry would evolve to move into the upper atmosphere and beyond. It may have taken longer to get payloads to orbit without government investment but once the technology was established it would likely have developed faster in a world where the public hadn't been programmed to believe that space development was something best left to government.
Since accepting the premise that these four industries would not exist or would exist in much lesser form is the basis for the rest of the book, I couldn't bring myself to go any further. The author is either grossly misinformed of grossly dishonest. In either case it doesn't hold out much hope of learning anything of value from the bulk of the volume.

The Highway system probably wouldn't be as connective and homogenous as it is because the States would've built them as needed.
And they would've done the routing different.
The FedGov just came through, surveyed the route, told people they were living there on borrowed time and maybe 2-15 years later the machines would show up.
We moved into a new house in the early summer of 1957. They surveyed for I-94 later that summer.
They finally took the property (I have no idea what they paid for it.) in 1969.
My Father was smart, he took the money and had the house moved about 1/2 mile away. Smaller lot but he kept the house. (which he built himself btw)

Or absurd audio overdubs. I saw the beauty pageant movie 'Smile' in the theater. There is a subplot about a group of kids, 14 year olds or thereabouts, sneaking into the backstage area with a camera. An argument has one of them calling another 'dickhead.' This became 'duckhead' for broadcast TV.
I used to be baffled as a child by some of things characters would say old books and comics, as I'd never heard anyone say such things. It was a while before I realize that this was euphemism for what the character was really intended to be saying.

Everything will kill you in the long term. Worrying about the effect of life sustaining foods over the course of decades is a very recent luxury in human history. Trying to find the perfect diet, especially when it seems to always come at the cost of the most basic pleasure a person can hope to enjoy, is a fool's errand. I hold out far more hope for our understanding and technology advancing to the point where it can mitigate or correct any damage we may build up along the way. After all, no matter what they ate, every human known to have existed eventually succumbed to death by old age is nothing else got them first.

from $30.00 instead of $20.00.
I've noticed on many occasions that young people working as cashiers have hard time making change in general.

My brother gets a kick out of getting change from the current generation of cashiers. For example, if his bill comes to $1.87, he will give the cashier two ones, a dime and two pennies. They will enter that into the POS device and are amazed to learn that he gets back a quarter as change. "How did you do that?" they often ask in amazement as if he had just performed a magic trick.

Really now?
Their Air Force is big enough to need that many Generals?

Thanks. Five minutes trying to compose a comment with links and shit, and when I hit the Post button it says "your comment looks like spam"
So I delete every damn word except the first sentence, and Pixie still does it.
So.....
You want blazing neon announcements
You'll settle for bolded words
you get a limp dick ammo alert

You may be more correct then you know.
I am pretty capable of performing every function allowed by Pixie, except the amper-thingies.
But EVERY time I come to a post relating to ammo, it's like it gets clamped down,

Life? Meh. I mean, at least I'm on this side of the ground and, fortunately, not in constant pain like Carol. It could always be worse. Just a sort of low-level depression day.
The writing? Oy, as J.J. would say. Yesterday I went over the book and broke it down into a series of scene cards, laid them all out and realized that none of it makes a coherent, full-length story. There are episodes, but no throughline.
And Pixy is f'ng up for me this morning. I'm going to get a cup of tea.

"You know, the law of averages says
Anything will happen that can
But the last time the Cubs took the pennant
Was the year we dropped the Bomb On Japan...."
Did you ever hear the Perry Como song, "Dig You Later (A-Hubba-Hubba-Hubba)?"
I got it from a guy that was in the know,
It was mighty smoky over Tokyo!

Glad to help.
I have e-mail alerts set on all of them, using the same price points for each.
And it's a toss-up between Wikiarms and Slickguns as to who alerts me first.
I have been able to get myself out of the "Grab anything at any price" mindset that I had when casual shopping in Brick/morter stores showed nothing but empty shelves, and snickering sales clerks saying "Good luck"
With the alerts, you will see patterns of most low prices popping Monday-Wednesday, and very few specials Thursday-Sunday.
But, wait for the better prices. They're out there.
