Okay okay I promise tonight's ONT really will kinda suck...
Jim Geraghty: Why It's So Hard to Out-Alinsky the Left
Because the left isn't bothered by hypocrisy. And because their Weltanschauung is fundamentally different from that of conservatives.
Shortly after Barack Obama rose to the presidency, the Right became fascinated by Saul Alinsky, and in particular by the philosopher and community organizer's "Rules for Radicals." Many on the right focused their attention on Alinsky's Fourth Rule: "Make opponents live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity."The strategy of "making them live up to their own book of rules" is frequently mentioned and discussed these days at Breitbart.com, Instapundit, Ace of Spades, and just about every other conservative website and blog.
...Not to take away from O'Keefe's work, which generates must-watch videos and scandal-inspired resignations with metronomic regularity, but there may be a flaw in this strategy. Ultimately, not that many liberals care whether their brethren are following their own book of rules. They've demonstrated a remarkable acceptance for one another's hypocrisy.
Many progressives organize their worldview in the reverse order: They pick the good people - themselves - and everything else is negotiable. And as it's currently practiced, liberalism doesn't really require much of anything. Or, when liberalism starts asking sacrifices and commitments of its adherents beyond liking and sharing on Facebook, the energy and enthusiasm disappear. Close observers of Obamacare have noticed that the Millennials and other young people who voted for Obama in droves aren't willing to pay several hundred dollars a month for health insurance.
The currency of progressivism isn't policies, and it certainly isn't results. It's emotions.

Of Course: Anti-Gun CA Senator Leland Yee Charged With Gun Running
And we're talking Archer-level running of guns here.
Famously anti-gun California state Senator Leland Yee has been charged with, in addition to bribery and public corruption.yes.gun running. Specifically conspiring with known organized crime lord Kwok Cheung "Shrimp Boy" Chow to illegally import firearms and sell them without a license . . .
The affidavit charges that the $2 million worth of weapons to have been secreted into the country from the Philippines included rocket launchers and machine guns, some of which Yee himself had fired while on Mindanao. A portion of the weapons Yee conspired to bring into the U.S. through New Jersey were to have been forwarded on to North Africa via Sicily.
And just in the past year Yee has sponsored bills to ban the 3-D printing of guns and the use of bullet-buttons on rifles like the AR-15 along with several other bills all designed to make life miserable for gun-owners in California. Because guns are bad, m'kay?
Is what the Obama Administration argued when a SD newspaper filed a FOIA request to find out the growth and current scope of the food stamp program since Obama was elected. The US Court of Appeals said no to their argument.

What It's Like to be Depressed in Pictures
Warning: This Video Can Screw Up Your Brain
Seriously the McCollough Effect is real and can be long-lasting:
For example, if someone alternately looks at a red horizontal grating and a green vertical grating for a few minutes, a black-and-white horizontal grating will then look greenish and a black-and-white vertical grating will then look pinkish. The effect is remarkable for often lasting an hour or more, and in some cases after prolonged exposure to the grids, the effect can last up to three months.
You have been warned.

Even if the very term itself is a Democrat lie.
Tell GOP men to be quiet. All Republican men should simply avoid talking about women's reproductive issues. Take a page from Democrat men. They don't seem to commit any gaffes talking about women's issues. When asked questions by the media, all Republican men should reply that American women do not need to be lectured on this subject by male politicians. Remember, the GOP is the party that believes politicians/government can't do anything right. Apply the same attitude when it comes to women's reproductive rights.
Also: The GOP's Real Gender Gap
"There's a little bit of a laziness on the part of the people who want to claim the Republican Party has some kind of women problem," said Priebus, speaking at the Christian Science Monitor Breakfast. "We basically have a single women problem under 35 issue."The real question, the chairman said, was why Democrats struggled to appeal to so many other groups of women.
"Why does the Democratic Party have so many problems in their engagement with married women, or women with children?" he asked.

A.k.a. the "Julias". Who swooned hugely for Obama. More than 2/3 of them voted for him in both elections. Going to be mighty interesting to see how the Julias react politically once Obama is no longer in the picture.
Democrats are hoping that the sisterhood effect will propel Ready For Hillary! into the White House. I am not sure that intergenerational interfemale psychology works like that. I'm not even sure some women Hillary's age will back her fully. Crabs and buckets come to mind.
And I'm sensing a certain groundswell of disaffection among those under 35. Disaffection from the Boomers. Who are seen by the 35- bunch as the generation that snarfed up all the good shit and left only crumbs behind.
Inaccurate, unfair, unfactual, plenty of Boomers who drew a short straw in life, some Boomers had to endure the draft. But that's the way the breeze blows and that's how the Boomers are seen by the young: negatively.
Of course, Obama is a Boomer, technically, but among the very youngest of the lot, born towards the tail end, and may not be perceived as one of them. A guy who was six years old during the Summer Of Love wasn't in on the fun. Whereas Hillary is an old, obvious, unmistakeable Boomer.

Yes, that and she is happy, successful, has a hot and supportive husband after following the path that they claim destroys a women's life.
I mean, married her high school sweetheart, 5 kids, and non-elitist style success (no hubby's coattails or ivy league degree)? She should be the ultimate victim of the patriarchy and she's kicking their asses with a smile on her face.

I got an absolutely enormous ping of Two Minutes' Hate for Palin from one particular demographic in particular out here in Commiefornia. I would bet that same demographic hates her no matter where.
To wit:
Liberal women of a certain age who had wanted to get married to a hot guy and have kids with him. But who also wanted careers. And who had bought into the post-Sixties feminist professional having-it-all mystique and who figured the kids could wait for a while yet while they worked, and that there would always be more marriageable hot guys available once they were ready for the marital-parental bed.
Then they waited too long. And couldn't find suitable suitors, other women in the meantime having cleaned out the best picks. Or they married a decent guy but found that one of their biological clocks had rung. Of course, they're liberals, so this can't be THEIR fault for having prioritized incorrectly. There must be someone else somewhere to blame. With the special hatred liberals reserve for such.
Then Palin bursts onto the scene. She's got the hot husband. She's had the kids. And she's ascending with rocketlike speed in her career. She literally does at least seem to be having it all. And she's not a liberal.
Every single one of those childless liberal women of a certain age who I know, if looks could kill, would have burned Palin to ashes right through the television screen with one single hard stare. Straight up green-eyed jealousy, double distilled, triple shot on the rocks, with a sulfuric acid chaser.
I think this is all just regrettable human nature, and it says a lot of sad things.

Now this is something that I am knowledgeable about (got a blown disk). My chiropractor recommends Budweiser but I've not found any other source of ethanol to be any less effective. Plain old aspirin works and if you have a problem that is a spasm on one side only you can "assume the position" and sleep in that posture. By position I mean if you got a spasm on the right side, lie on your right side, extend your right leg as far out straight as you can, bend your right knee and rotate it over as far down as you can, reach down as far as you can with your right arm, and rotate your shoulders in the opposite direction. This is the position you take prior to a chiropractic adjustment to relieve stress on the right side. Sleeping in that position can have a similar effect.

There is a lot here: 203 Strand St, Alexandria, VA 22314 within crawling distance. There are several along union street with diabolically small, truck hating parking spaces; that one is an open lot. Floods at high tides and there may be river rats hanging about when it gets late - so lasses need an escort to their cars.

The "make them live by their rulebook" deal is an intention of depriving people of their good feelings about themselves. It is an intent to get a conservative to question their own morality.
We should be depriving the left of their good feelings about themselves. To do that the messages would be--
You are not cool. You are not special. You are not informed. You are not sophisticated. You do not have good intentions. You are not smart.
You are a racist pig. Your are prone to be a slaver, abuser or nazi at any time. You are a money-grubbing scumbag who uses government as your thug.
In fact, if you are a leftist you are either stupid, a nutjob, or an asshole or some combination of all 3.
Will any of these messages change any leftist for the better? Absolutely not -- all it will do is really piss them off and make them dig in their heels even more.
So why do it? Because these kinds of messages, if delivered relentlessly, will cut down on the number of people who are willing to go along with the leftists. Alinsky would deprive us of our belief in ourselves. We need to deprive them of the sense that they cool or in any way acceptable.

I think you're right about that. There seems to be a sense among young people, at least when I was young, that it is "cool" to be a leftist. It still appears to be the case today.
Attack that, make it uncool, and we may at least be able to stop it from spreading further.

Sean, that's the PPCLI (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry) - or at least it was, back in the 80s. Gotta be one of the coolest unit designations, ever.
Anyway, never in uniform, but in more war zones (ours, and others) at the service of Uncle Sam than most who HAVE been in uniform, and in one (Iraq) had the pleasure of befriending true allies (Bulgarian, Portuguese, Korean, British).
Actually, given what is no less than the disintegration of the US as far as I can see, it's all bittersweet. The simple righteous sincerity and "get it" mindset of people in a war zone who are BESIDE THEMSELVES with pride and satisfaction to be serving alongside Americans. Marine friend of mine has described the vicious infighting among the Polish military officers to stay in Iraq, as it was obviously a dream come true (serving alongside Americans) - and the near-suicidal rage and depression among Spanish officers when their idiotic country pulled the plug on their Iraq commitment after the Madrid train bombings.

So many in the country have internalized the notion that Republicans are mentally deranged, evil neanderthals that there's very little able to filter through. If it comes from a Republican, it is either false or misleading, that's what they think.

This is very true. Speaking anecdotally, of course. I live and work in Philly, so my experience is probably extremely skewed. The 'War on Women' thing is bullshit.
Problem is...it's one of those catchy little sound bites that just won't die.
Unless we kill it with Fire.
The Fire that burns in the souls of Hot Conservative Men.
There's a reason why so many liberal women choose conservative men to settle down with.
Why?
Because...Conservative Men Are Just Hotter.
We should work with this.
Now this thing here:
"Tell GOP men to be quiet. All Republican men should simply avoid talking about women's reproductive issues.
Yeah, no that's not gonna happen.
We'd probably win more elections that way...but that's not gonna happen.
The best we can hope for, is if GOP Men just resist the urge to say stupid stuff like "rape doesn't cause pregnancy" and shit like that.
Now, that thing she said about:
'Male politicians lecturing women about women's issues.'
She has a point there...because it is kinda creepy.
As far as what-to-say-in-an-interview, how about something like this:
"I'm not a woman, so I cannot presume to know what it's like to have to deal with what a woman has to deal with...
But when it comes to choosing whether to terminate a pregnancy...I would hope that she chooses life."
And just leave it at that.

Best example? Fat, bloated, drunken, disgusting Ted Kennedy driving a girl into the water and letting her slowly drown while he hid out like a f**king coward for nine hours.
Meanwhile his long suffering pregnant wife miscarries their baby in the middle of the scandal. She becomes a drunk because, well, what else does she have with him publicly and blatantly making a fool of her? And he continues his long repulsive life of behaving like a drunken pig molesting waitresses and other assorted unimportant females. His death was a blessing, not to him, but to the females who would no longer have to put up with his disgust pig behavior.
But hey, he loved him some abortion, so the libs call him the Lion of the Senate and vilify republicans with the slogan "GOP War on Women".

Uggh. This. Always reminds me of right after the drunken pig died, waiting in a Nordstrom men's dressing area for my husband, watching CNN, of course, there being no iPad, then, and the sales lady comes and starts watching with me, positively glowing with admiration and remarks to me that "his wife is really great, too!" I just glared at her.

444 The 'War on Women' thing is bullshit.
Problem is...it's one of those catchy little sound bites that just won't die.
Unless we kill it with Fire.
The Fire that burns in the souls ofHot Conservative Men.
There's a reason why so manyliberal women choose conservative men to settle down with.

No. I for one am not onboard with the leftists' propaganda that it is just up to women to decide whether or not to have an abortion. Abortion is rightly a public policy issue, and male politicians have as much right as female politicians to discuss the issue. I expect any politician that I vote for to have the courage to speak on any political issue, rather than shifting his eyes and mumbling some MSM approved statement that avoids the issue by saying, in the end, nothing.
In politics, there is no such thing as women's issues, or black issues, or homosexual issues, or any other kind of issue that is only discussable by the ones with the right gender, pigmentation, etc. The politicians need to represent us all.

Feinstein's husband was involved with COSCO, who was caught shipping full auto Chinese AKs into the US in the mid-90s. As I recall, he admitted being an investor, but disavowed any knowledge of the smuggling. Info is murky on how involved he was in COSCO's operations or whether COSCO even knew about the smuggling.
Personally, I believe he was heavily involved, but that's just a gut feeling.

Queens assemblyman, Bill Scarborough, was raided by the FBI about travel reimbursements from the state.
CA state senator, Leland Yee, was arrested amid accusations of corruption.
PA state senator, LeAnna Washington, "has been ordered held for trial on charges that she misused her Senate offices to raise money for her campaign".

This is why my head explodes from living in Commiefornia:
-- Commiefornia liberals hate guns and loathed the Iraq war
-- Fein-ken-stein had (still has?) the coveted ultra-rare San Francisco County concealed carry permit
-- Fein-ken-stein voted in the Senate for the war in Iraq (and in Afghanistan)
-- Fein-ken-stein's husband is up to his elbows in sleazy gunrunning
-- Fein-ken-stein's husband pocketed hundreds of millions in "no-bid" Iraq war contracts that she steered to him with no disclosure
-- Commiefornia liberals ABSOLUTELY FUCKING ADORE Fein-ken-stein and will overwhelmingly vote her back into office every six years until she's 120 and in unresponsive vegetative senility (a process well along already)
I just do not get it. A corollary of Fen's Law, has to be. Anyway, feel free to quote this example when and if you are asked why you think liberals are essentially ridiculous.

Yannow that "depression shadow".
I made it my bitch. It tried to get me in the mid '90s... was a close run thing for a while.
But, I divorced the cause, and took that "shadow", and pinned it into a submission hold, and didn't let it tag-out.
Flat out killed the futhermucker, is what I did.
No, not every day now is "sunshine and roses", but that's only because it's still more winter than spring.
Fcuking Glowball Worming...... may ManBearPig be beset by the "shadows" of ten thousand AoS Morons, and commit seppuku with a dull, rusty garden shear.

It also creates situations where you have to wonder if your head is just wrong or you're just missing a filter that allows everyone else to function, even if they're aware of the looming problems. During the Cold War there would be people who expressed their general sense of dread into an obsessive fear of nuclear war. Today it becomes an overwhelming sense of the people running the world's finances really want there to be an event so disruptive the potential destruction defies measurement. (Like this: http://tinyurl.com/q975ypj because somehow this time will be different.)
Is it just that most people are LIVs? Do they know but have some mental mechanism that allows them to ignore it? Is it just a manifestation of the depression seeking some definition more detailed than just vague dread? It becomes impossible to tell.

You want the best 1911, you say?
Cabot 1911.
Do a Bing search on it. Hide your wallet, first. Prices start at barely under five figures, to the left of the decimal.
I have had the pleasure of handling and cycling a couple of 'em at the NRA convention in Houston. Wish I could have fired one.
But, hell..... they make even an Ed Brown or Wilson look like an amateur effort, and that's saying something!

Though he claims to a Democrat, he cannot describe one facet of their platform that he wholly admires.
He self deprecates, but in a very humorous way.
His loyalty to Chicago teams is unsurpassed, except for his acknowledgements that they mostly suck. Note that this is true of most sports teams on any given year; besides, who the fuck is he going to cheer for based in Hawaii?
He makes fun of his family (mainly at his expense), but woe unto the sumbitches that try and mess with them.
Anyhow, thanks for your service to our country; and don't worry, I'll be giving you shit about Clark The Pedobear in the very near future.

In America, at least, yes, most people are LIVs. Politics, if considered at all, is entertainment. John Stewart is considered a sage. The economy? A bunch of faceless rich people playing with numbers. Unemployment? Funemployment. Ukraine? Iran? If they can even find them on a map, they're on the other side of the world, who cares? NSA spying? A punchline. "If the NSA is spying on me, they must be bored". Etc. Etc.

SF Weekly article from 2007, references the 2006 murder that figured in the investigation that snared Yee. The murder that Chow most likely ordered or carried out himself.
Also, Chow was involved in the Golden Dragon Restaurant Massacre back in '77. The perps were gunning for Chow and his gang compatriots.

I've had both at various times.
And simultaneously. That's all sorts of fun.
Unfortunately, I think there are a lot of real world reasons to be anxious and depressed at the moment. I know a few consistently happy and optimistic people. Without exception they are insulated, ignorant, low-information types.
None of this is new in human affairs. Centuries ago, Erasmus wrote _Praise of Folly_ all about how people who do accurately perceive the problems of the world are typically miserable from reflecting on those. As they wander around through mobs of happy idiots.
I suppose the difference between depression and anxiety is that there really aren't any fast-acting single-dose rescue meds you can take for depression, the way you take a painkiller for a headache. Whereas there are some reasonably effective fast-acting anxiolytic drugs that will let you get a night's sleep.

Now that's tough. My maternal granddad was another tough old coot. Retired railroad worker, former alky, lifetime smoker. He told me many times that when he failed to get out of bed in the morning that it would kill him.
One day in his 81st year, he failed to get out of bed. The doctor described his death as due to failure of his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and probably his will.

I've met Rum, arhooley (*sigh*), Kratos, St Patrick in TN, Beckoning Chasm, Arbalest, Shredded Chi, Gushka, BBD, Merovign....oh, and there were a bunch thick-and-fast at the famed MoMe in Berzerkeley -- rode up with Dianna, met Gabe and a couple of others that I recognized the names-of at the time, but with my pathological inability to remember people-names and someone pouring Bushmills all over some neurons to obliterate the evidence....
You could well bet that if I had travel plans to Boston, I'd be hinting.

Just curious. I belong to two ranges - one indoor, one outdoor. They're building what will reportedly be one of the largest indoor ranges in the country in central county just north of SD proper. Good to see - but I'll stay at my two, which are, respectively, convenient, and very nice outdoor.
Here's to hoping the 3 other legislators (er, parasitic, race-baiting, illiterate, vile cretins, to be precise) mentioned in the criminal complaint against Yee get pulled in, and down, by the whole affair. Not that there's really any hope in CA.

Just one more quality scalp from a Sacto Dem (DeLeon, Steinberg?), and sensible rulings in Peruta and Pena, and CA might, for the moment, once again become a barely tolerable place for gun nuts. I don't carry and doubt I ever will, but (as always) want common sense and the law to prevail on that topic. And the "roster" is such an egregious, undisguised bit of lawless unconstitutional idiocy, that if it goes down, it will restore .00005% of my confidence in the US legal system.
And then, of course, getting those older Smiths etc. will get a whole lot easier, and a bit cheaper (hope there are still batches of cheap LEO revolver turn-ins coming down the pipeline, so far could only watch and drool in fury at online stores selling these).

My dad grew up in a tarpaper shack in Delta, CO, that got a gas furnace when he and my uncle went back and installed it in 1971 (previously had used coal -- I've got a couple of chunks of it). It got indoor plumbing in 1973, when my uncle and my dad went back and installed that (note the order). IIRC, gramps moved out to live with my uncle in the late 80's, after my cherished step-grandma passed on.

Ah, OK.....I've been sort avoiding that ONT, but it's left me with a weird hitch about a casual surfer in the future, who may have been interested in a link to something in the actual thread or something, maybe even a kid, stumbling into the hot mess that happened. I think that most regulars found out about the situation when it swallowed every thread for the next 36 hours.
It's not that I'm trying to deny that it occurred or anything, but some 10-year-old doing a class project on "what topics were important in each of the last 10 ONTs for January 31" and reading that without proper understanding, buffers, or supervision just skeeves me out.

I'm fat. Partly because I over indulged for a while and didn't exercise, then I came down with some condition and my knee went wacky. (no not caused by weight but that made it worse)
Because of the knee, I exercised even LESS than before. So guess what happened?
Now I CAN'T exercise effectively because I'm so fat.
I have however bitten the bullet and finally cleared room for and setup an exercising platform. (like the one Chuck Norris hawks on TV but not)
Good news; the knee is getting better and soon I may be able to go for walks without pain.
Now, of course, I'm having OTHER problems associated not with weight so much (it isn't helping) as with OLD. AGE.
I'm younger than I look but older than I feel? Something like that.
Keep plugging away. No one gets out alive.
(don't tell anyone but I'm gonna give it a go though)

The lib brother is married to a hard core lib - so bad that her email is blocked

You have no clue how bad it was for Mr. Carter. The media hated him. Thought he was a jumped up farmer. (and he was).
Sanctimonious as all get out. They protected him somewhat but he took some awful hits for fairly benign stuff.
They thought Carter wasn't one of them. (which is why he's spent the rest of his life trying to prove them wrong but he doesn't understand you can't hammer or capitulate till you're blue and be accepted)
They want to believe Obama is one of them but inside they know he's not but it's too late now and this is there last chance to **** America.

My running joke is, I say "I'm planning on living forever. Ask me how it's going." If they ask I follow with "So far so good!"
I gained 60 lbs after the heart failure. Ever try losing weight with a lazy heart and medicines that slow your metabolism down? Yay.
The longer I'm on the meds the more complications I have. I've been off the worst of them for two months and exercising fairly intensively nearly an hour a day and I don't think I've lost a pound.
Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 27, 2014 02:06 AM (qyfb5)

One important thing to consider is what you'll do with your time if you go the disability route. Unless it is being severely aggravated by your job, the pain is still going to be there and you'll find yourself with all too much time to focus on it.
That is one of the reasons I hate not having any work for the last few weeks. On top of financial concerns it leaves me with too much time to think about bad stuff.

Taking Metoprolol?
Try getting docs to substitute something else or larger quantities of what already works.
That stuff turned on me in 2006 and I was literally being killed by my medicine.
I was down to an irregular heatbeat of 42, they wanted to put me on a pace maker, I said wait a minute . . . NO.
Then I told the doc; let me quit metoprolol and give me "this" (this being the meds I was taking but more)
Now I'm still down on the BP but the heart rate is up close to 60 (I've always had a slow heart rate just not quite this slow) and I feel a LOT better.
There are interactions and affects that the docs don't know. Nobody does because we've all got slightly different metabolism and how our enzymes and hormones interact with the meds. (my belief)
We are all unique beings. Why should all medicines react for everybody the same?
It's a blooming miracle that any do to any level at all.
It's why I self medicate. (no not THAT way.) I check out stuff and try different things and so far I've been lucky and made some improvements.
Next up: WEIGHT LOSS. no wait: FAT LOSS.

I personally believe (being a tin foil hat type) that they changed something on purpose OR they screwed it up accidentally.
If you go on the boards their is a lot of posts about metoprolol going bad for people.
For a while I got it overseas and it worked ok but after a while they too started doing the same thing to me. (stomach problams, gerd, no decrease in bp but decrease in hr)
Was stuck on it till just last year when I could get someone to listen to me and change the meds.
