Littlewood's Law

Littlewood's law, or adage, states that an individual can expect to experience "miracles" at the rate of about one per month.
Littlewood defines a miracle as an exceptional event of special significance occurring at a frequency of one in a million. He assumes that during the hours in which a human is awake and alert, a human will see or hear one "event" per second, which may be either exceptional or unexceptional. Additionally, Littlewood supposes that a human is alert for about eight hours per day.

As a result a human will in 35 days have experienced under these suppositions about one million events. Accepting this definition of a miracle, one can expect to observe one miraculous event for every 35 days' time, on average - and therefore, according to this reasoning, seemingly miraculous events are actually commonplace.

Statistical miracles happen to us a lot. But we're either oblivious to them or they involve trivial events that we simply don't care about. But when something does cause us to pay exceptional attention to every single detail, all of sudden we discover these fairly common 'miracles' and they become the amazing coincidences that conspiracy theories are built on.

How Inmarsat Figured Out the Flight Path of MH370

On one hand the techniques used - precise timing differences, trigonometry, and using the Doppler Effect - are not new. But putting them all together, using it on the limited data they had, and cross-checking and confirming it against actual plane data in such a short time is reminiscent of the 'failure is not an answer' engineers of NASA's glory years.

Study: Parents Tired of Parenting Studies

Paul Nickman, forty-five, was taking a coffee break at his Visalia, California, law office when he began to leaf through an article about the importance of giving kids real challenges. "They mentioned this thing called grit, and I was like, 'O.K, great. Grit.' Then I started to think about how, last year, I'd read that parents were making kids do too much and strive too hard, and ever since then we've basically been letting our kids, who are ten and six, sit around and stare into space." Nickman called his wife and started to shout, "Make the kids go outside and get them to build a giant wall out of dirt and lawn furniture and frozen peas!"

The Baffled Spinster

Feminists have sold young women a bill of goods, that they can live like men, work like men, have sex like men, and then turn back into women when they feel like it.  We laugh at a woman like this sometimes and make fun of her and say, "Didn't she know that she'd end up like this?"

No, she didn't know that.  That's because when you are 17 years old, you don't know much, especially in this culture of extended adolescence.  And when you have been told from a very young age that, as a girl, it is your destiny to Have It All exactly When You Want It, I'm sure it is very baffling to find yourself in your thirties with no husband and none in sight, with the dawning realization that your job and lonely apartment are not nearly as fulfilling as being a wife and mother would have been.
However, what most of us don't seem to understand is that young women make the terrible choices that they are making because they are told from an early age that these are actually good choices

What Is "Mindfulness," and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

I hate this word mostly due to the kind of people who won't shut up about it but having had an interest in Zen in my youth, I can see how 'being in the moment' - instead of the "future in your head'' - is good for avoiding anxiety and unhappiness. Especially if you're prone to overthinking and brooding.

9 Somewhat OT, but VERY interesting nevertheless ______________________________ AP Wire News Services 3/27/14 @ 1903EST# – for Release to AP subscription member (US Only) BREAKING – <> POSSIBLE GUILTY PLEA IN LELAND YEE CASE! In a stunning turn of events, State Senator Leland Yee (#-San Francisco), who was indicted yesterday on arms trafficking and corruption charges after a lengthy sting operation by the FBI, has tentatively agreed to plead ‘Guilty’ to being a Republican, in return for which all of the other (lesser) charges would be dropped. Although in the formative negotiating stages, this plea bargain would still have to be approved by the California Democrat Committee (CDC) and the CA Federal Prosecutor’s Office (San Francisco District). While by no means assured, “approval for such plea could come as early as tomorrow morning”, said Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), who spoke on condition of anonymity . “I’m sure I join with all my fellow citizens, especially those at the CDC, in seeing justice is served and in finding a way to put this long, national nightmare behind us…..However, it’s always a disappointment to see Republicans dragging us down in this fashion,” Boxer went on to say with obvious regret.

I guess now the little "shitdarter" is more important than 40-50 people not being able to work while equipment gets replaced and things get rebuilt.

We have a niece who is considering attending one of the academies, but Coolmama and her sister are afraid said niece will be exposed to unbearable sexual harassment in today's military. 97 PENSACOLA, FLA. — A Georgia man told police he wanted to fly home to see his mother. But the trainee at Pensacola Naval Air Station decided to scale a barbed-wire fence at Pensacola International Airport and take a UPS cargo plane for his journey, Pensacola police said. Two officers found him Tuesday inside the cockpit of the plane with his hand on the controls. Seaman Recruit Mahiri Hanif, 20, was a student at the base’s Naval Air Technical Training Center, a base spokesman said Thursday. He had been there for almost a year since graduating from boot camp in April at Great Lakes Naval Training Center north of Chicago Mairi Hanif? Shit, PC shit like this is going to kill us all

104 60 It's really impossible for most anyone here to give you much of a useful answer concerning whether your niece will be sexually harrassed. It's going to depend on the individuals she comes into contact with and their (male and female) supervisors. I believe some of the sexual harassment/pressure stories I've heard, and not others. I believe the women I know who swear up, down and sideways that in their time in the service, no one ever dared say or do anything inappropriate. Overall, I think if you compare military environments to other comparable male-dominated environments, military environments will have less sexual harassment/misconduct.

114 Gang-rape in the military?  Unlikely.  Very unlikely.

However, it is an institution where she'll be surrounded by young men and women in close proximity, in good physical shape, with lots of stress and lots of hormones.  Additionally, many people join the military because they don't quite fit in with normal society.  Will private (or cadet) Joe Snuffy say something inappropriate?  Yes.  May he even get a little grabby?  On occasion.  Usually it's nothing more than a misunderstanding combined with too much to drink.  Especially since she'll see some of her female colleagues use sex to get the attention/get what they want.  If she doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to stand up for herself: to tell a guy to "fuck off" when he makes a rude remark, or slug him when his hand strays, then she should find another line of work.  This is not a nice business and it's not one's for delicate little flowers.

Head up to 45000 feet to put the plane to sleep and fuck around until you run out of fuel somewhere over the Indian Ocean. He snapped. And it just so happens that when a Lithium Ion battery cracks is case, gets hot, it puts out a fume which can disorient you, as it knocks you out. 157 "Silicon Valley and many of the larger tech companies, as well as many of their workers, tend to support Left-of-Center causes and support Hard Left candidates."

I keep saying:

GIVE THEM EXACTLY WHAT THEY CLAIM TO WANT.

In what Mark Twain called "a horse-doctor's dose".

Let's start enforcing those "disparate impact" guidelines rigorously.

Consider that Google and Facebook are in an area that's rapidly approaching 50% Hispanic. You'll see a fair number of brown faces on their campuses, but damn few of them are Hispanic. Probably not even 5%. Because Hispanics don't typically enter rigorous STEM programs at university.

Well, "progressives" would say, that's the company's problem and no matter what, they damn well better hire 50% Hispanics, same as the demographics of their hiring catchment area, or else be hit with massive lawsuits and EEOC edicts and federal consent decrees out the wazoo.

Of course, that's what "progressives" would say if these companies didn't shovel tons of money into "progressive" coffers. Since those companies do do that, the "progressives" immediately enforce a discreet silence. So it's up to conservatives to step up and make sure that their actions are congruent with their beliefs. By federal main force, if necessary.

169 As ole Joe would say, this Yee bust in San Francisco is a BFD. But what do I know? I think giving two million to an undercover agent to bring freaking missiles into country from Muslims in Philippines is a pretty big deal.

It certainly trumps his former charges, as a fine and upstanding Democrat congress dude from California, of shoplifting and prostitution (remember, this is San Francisco). But, come on!

"Investigators said Yee discussed helping the agent get weapons worth $500,000 to $2.5 million, including shoulder-fired missiles, and explained the entire process of acquiring them from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines to bringing them to the U.S., according to an affidavit by FBI agent Emmanuel V. Pascua."

and

"Yee is the third Democratic state senator in California to face criminal charges this year. Sen. Rod Wright was convicted of perjury and voter fraud for lying about his legal residence in Los Angeles County, and Sen. Ron Calderon has been indicted on federal corruption charges. Wright and Calderon are taking a voluntary leave of absence, with pay, although Republicans have called for them to be suspended or expelled."

Yay! Democrats mentioned here:!

179 So, I don't get the Sandra Tsing-Loh hate. She wrote a review of a book, and her editorial style is a bit wandering with a few digressions. She mentioned that she destroyed her marriage by cheating on her husband, but she didn't say she was right to do it (or wrong... but am I just hearing what I want to hear, or was she a bit remorseful?). She didn't say anything about monogamy; she just quoted a few sections of the book. The last time we were hating on her here, she wrote an essay that can be summarized as "women are setting the bar too high for men, and unsurprisingly men are not achieving the standard being set." She as much as said, in about these words, that her friend had a real prince of a boyfriend and should appreciate him more. But the jokes here were as if she were Margaret Cho or someone like that. What gives? P.S. Her thing is to write humor based on her own life. My favorite thing she ever wrote was a description of a Vegas show called "Nudes on Ice". It appears she will be writing a tell-all about how she exploded her marriage with infidelity. Perhaps that will finally push me into the "hate Sandra Tsing-Loh" camp but I am not there yet.

Posted by: ChristyBlinky, Bossy Redneck Queen at March 27, 2014 10:55 PM (baL2B) There is a reason all of these were done in late March. 195 President Barack Obama’s family vacations abroad at taxpayer expense has been slammed by a watchdog group keeping tabs on the bills. The president, first lady Michelle Obama, and their daughters, traveled to Africa last summer and then to Honolulu over the winter – and the cost of the flights alone on Air Force One came to $15,888,585, according to Judicial Watch. Urgent: Do You Approve Or Disapprove of President Obama’s Job Performance? Vote Now in Urgent Poll The organization, which unearthed the figure through the Freedom of Information Act, found that the flights in and around Africa by the Obamas in June and July 2013 came to 35.5 hours at a cost of $228,288 an hour, totaling $8,104,224. The family’s flights on Air Force One for their 17-day Christmas vacation to Honolulu between December 2013 and January 2014 totaled 36.9 hours at a cost of $210,877 an hour, adding up to $7,781,361. Furthermore, Judicial Watch also revealed that the flight costs for the family’s trip in August last year to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, was $1,164,268. “The costs to taxpayers of President Obama’s travel, especially his luxury vacation travel, are beyond the pale,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement. “And the secrecy surrounding these costs shows that Obama’s vows of transparency are rubbish.” But obama is fine with cutting the shit out of the pay of poor enlisted Military and their families. I know what it was like decades ago when I was in college, I don't even want to think about what it must be like now, with, if anything, even more binge drinking among a bunch of 18-22 year old males. My suspicion with both college and the military is that when people drink heavily things can get out of control. And that includes women drinking too much. I would advise anyone whose daughter is going off from home, whether to college, the big city, or the military, to talk to her about how to cut back on her risks. Rule no. 1: don't get so drunk you put yourself in risky situations. If things at a party seem to be getting out of hand, get the hell out of there.

Well, your niece should be sure to stay in safe civilian life, where as we all know, sexual harassment never ever happens. It's only in the cruel evil barbaric backward military where it does.

What you really need to do is to sit down Coolmama, her sister, and your niece with someone who is a currently serving male. To hear the horror stories about the Groundhog Day infinitely repeating sequence of anti-sexual-harassment training to which such service members are subjected.

Subjected to to such a a degree that it's really starting to cripple retention, which is falling through the floor. What could be so bad as to compel people to give up their military careers and launch out into the worst civilian job market since the Depression years? The politically correct drumbeat that never stops and leaves no time for things like actual military training.

I think they might have told him they had gotten into some trouble and moved away from Daytona to start anew, but I get the feeling he didn't know how much or what kind.

At any rate, he is forewarned, so that's about all we can do.

On a positive note, they think he will make a full recovery and he plans to volunteer at the VA to give him something important to do, this will keep him active and hopefully prevent a re-occurrance.

Thanks for all the kind words, prayers, and suggestions on how to dispose of the bodies. All greatly appreciated, if not altogether appropriate.

319 Update on Pop: we printed out the arrest records and gave them to him, he acted as if he knew it already but he wanted to keep them anyway. *** You've done all you can do and it's terrific news that he's going to make a full recovery. God Bless 'em. 328 To see what effects such a regional nuclear conflict might have on climate, scientists modeled a war between India and Pakistan involving 100 Hiroshima-level bombs, each packing the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT — just a small fraction of the world's current nuclear arsenal. They simulated interactions within and between the atmosphere, ocean, land and sea ice components of the Earth's climate system.

Scientists found the effects of such a war could be catastrophic.

"Most people would be surprised to know that even a very small regional nuclear war on the other side of the planet could disrupt global climate for at least a decade and wipe out the ozone layer for a decade," study lead author Michael Mills, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, told Live Science.

... please excuse my skepticism, but the Soviets detonated a 50,000,000 ton nuclear device back in the 60's (that about 3000 15kiloton devices) and the world didn't end.
If you recall, we also go a dose of the hyperbole back during the Gulf War when we were told that the possibly of burning Kuwait oil fields should stop us from going to war because it would cause, at least, regional cooling, which never occurred enough that anybody noticed.

If you recall, we also got a dose of this hyperbole back during the Gulf War (from Carl Sagan, I believe) when we were told that the possibility of burning Kuwait oil fields should stop us from going to war because it would cause, at least, regional cooling, which never occurred enough that anybody noticed.Oddly, Wikipedia mentions a 2006 AGU study with 50 Hiroshima-sized nuclear weapons. Posted by: Carol I agree, I believe she is protecting her superiors too, however, I think having a threat of prosecution hanging over her for years may have be useful for lois. additionally, if statute of limitations are long enough to outlast obama they are long enough to get her superiors after obama leaves office as well. I am less interested in getting a scalp quickly than I am in solving the problem.

This morning there were all local news trucks parked across the street & I couldnÂ’t see the station because it is on the left side of the street & itÂ’s both ways, two lanes & I take a right. I could only see flag at half staff for two firefighters killed Thursday from that House. On my way home I drive right by it and am usually stopped at a light in front of it. The flag is still half mast, of course & door was open & people were gathered around, not that many because it was after 11. There was a large pile of flowers & arrangements off to the right of the doorway. It almost brought a tear to my eyes.

Abortion had been viewed as a negative thing. Even people who called themselves pro-choice would say that they wouldn't want to get one themselves, but thought women should be able to make the choice. It was viewed as something to be avoided. I believe that there is a conscious, deliberate move on the part of liberals to remove the stigma on abortion and have it viewed as a simple, personal choice. I think they want to make the getting of an abortion mainstreamed.

The flight leader got lost being unfamiliar with the area, he had also dunked a few Avengers in the Pacific after getting lost trying to find his carrier and had to be fished out of the drink. Lots of flight transcripts over Lt Taylor's confusion over where they were, with Taylor believing they were over the FL Keys. I think it was more a function of the guys on the scene not being able to tell them apart, and of course they didn't say anything about it as they were being loaded. Two sets of people who are that highly trained can apparently fight for a long time without causing permanent injury...and as I recall they got TO the brig, but never got IN the brig. Their respective CO's had to come sort out the mess.

Of course not being permanent party I didn't get the full story, I just heard bits and pieces from the SEAL who accidentally climbed into my window in the barracks looking for his own (his was on the 3rd floor, mine was on the 2nd). Yeah, he was climbing the outside of the building.

In most cases, dogs who eat their own excrement are doing so because it is not completely digested.  This can be either the result of a dietary deficiency, or because your dog is lacking certain digestive enzymes.  If it is the former, a gradual change of diet to a better grade of dog food will generally solve the problem.  If the latter, the addition of plain lowfat yogurt and Adolph's (unseasoned) meat tenderizer (just lightly sprinkled over the top) can help.

579 There was a notable disappearance of a DC passenger plane between San Juan PR and Miami in 1948 (Bermuda Triangle!!) The plane was never found, but the investigation found that the plane was having battery problems and the engines weren't properly charging the batteries. They figured that the magnetos crapped out completely and the batteries ran down, so the radio wouldn't work either. The pilot wouldn't have heard a weather report of a change in wind direction on the route and didn't know to compensate causing a western drift off course. The flight was also at night

654  Noah is giving me the same reasons to loathe it like I loathe the movie Troy. Inspired does not mean its faithful to the source material. May Achilles drag the tattered carcasses of the writers of this movie behind his chariot. And go take care of the writers for Prometheus while at it.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at March 28, 2014 01:19 AM

If Russell Crowe doesn't get drunk and surly in the movie, what's the point? Regarding Prometheus, I must say, that I didn't hate AvP1 when it came out, mainly because it was good compared to Alien Ressurection. I heard that Ridley Scott wanted to do something along the lines of Prometheus back then, but 20th C Fox went with AvP1 instead. If it's true, then AvP1 spared us for well over a decade. AvP1 may be a bit sucky, but it scores points for delaying shit detonation that was Prometheus.

730 Let's multitask and do both. Posted by: RickZ I am fine with now, however, if "now" is going to be a problem in the elections I a can delay my gratification. it seems whenever we go for a scalp we get the short end so I am fine with having an issue with lerner through the elections and having, hopefully, the house and senate to use after the elections.

734 .50 DTC is legal. The thing is, the idiot politicians banned the .50 BMG (new sales) by cartridge dimension.

Change the shoulder angle, fire-form the cases, bam, new cartridge, legal.

Because stupid.

Mind you, *some* people can have .50 BMG if they want to. I could, for example, for reasons not worth going into.

If I had the money, which I don't.

But they're all dumbass laws by people like Yee, so there you go. Posted by: Merovign,

757 That Aluminum Phosphide story scares the crap out of me.

The daughter travels to some backwoods parts of the third world, most of those places have no real training and easy access to things like pesticides.

Posted by: PMRich at March 27, 2014 11:53 PM (KDUNf)

Yeah, that is scary. Sounds like there would be a real opportunity for some clever chemist to come up with a cheap phosphine detector or exposure badge; say a chemical-coated paper strip that changes color if exposed to even traces of phosphine. Or an affordable electronic detector that could be incorporated into a smart phone.

However, what most of us don't seem to understand is that young women make the terrible choices that they are making because they are told from an early age that these are actually good choices

My sympathy meter for the old harpies clapped out a lonnngggg time ago.  All the pro-choice, women lib chicks I knew from college 25 years ago all are in the same place now.  Single/divorced, no kids with an empty flat and dying for any type of attention.

Anothing thing: When my family and I go out for walks downtown, I cannot help but notice the occassional scathing looks my wife gets from older women.  Attractive woman with kids holding her hands and they are oblivious to them, but I noticed it.  Envy is an ugly thing to behold.
