If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs...
And do what needs to be done when it's time for it.
On July 18, 1965 then CDR Denton was shot down over North Vietnam where he would be a POW for the next seven and half years. After extended torture and solitary confinement the North Vietnamese thought he was sufficiently softened up to be used in propaganda videos. They were wrong.
Denton's name first came to the attention of the American public in 1966, during a television interview arranged by the North Vietnamese in Hanoi. Prior to the interview, torture and threats of more torture were applied to intimidate him to "respond properly and politely." His captors thought he was softened up sufficiently to give the North Vietnamese their propaganda line
...During the interview, after the Japanese interviewer's recitation of alleged U.S. "war atrocities," Denton was asked about his support of U.S. policy concerning the war. He replied: "I don't know what is happening now in Vietnam, because the only news sources I have are North Vietnamese, but whatever the position of my government is, I believe in it, I support it, and I will support it as long as I live." The audience was aghast at his unexpected answer and the room went dead silent.
Throughout the interview, while responding to questions and feigning sensitivity to harsh lighting, Denton blinked his eyes in Morse Code, repeatedly spelling out a covert message: T-O-R-T-U-R-E. The interview, which the Japanese journalist clandestinely took from Hanoi to Tokyo and sold to ABC was broadcast on American television on May 17, 1966[. It] was the first confirmation that American POWs in Vietnam were being tortured.
You can watch his message in this video. The Morse code for 'torture' is - --- .-. - ..- .-. .
Gawker's Adam Weinstein Wants to Put You in Jail for Being a Climate Change 'Denier'
Those denialists should face jail. They should face fines. They should face lawsuits from the classes of people whose lives and livelihoods are most threatened by denialist tactics....I'm talking about Rush and his multi-million-dollar ilk in the disinformation business. I'm talking about Americans for Prosperity and the businesses and billionaires who back its obfuscatory propaganda. I'm talking about public persons and organizations and corporations for whom denying a fundamental scientific fact is profitable, who encourage the acceleration of an anti-environment course of unregulated consumption and production that, frankly, will screw my son and your children and whatever progeny they manage to have.
Those malcontents must be punished and stopped
I wonder if these climate gulags will be heated with Green-based energy sources.
Russia Supposedly Eyeing Finland Once Again
Well good luck with that. As the USSR learned during the Winter War the Finns are not to be trifled with. Simo Häyhä may have died in 2002 but the spirit of sisu lives on. The fact that Finnish is one of the few non-Indo-European languages left in Europe is telling. (Hint: it's not due to geography).
One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest ex-advisers has claimed that the ex-KGB agent ultimately wants to reclaim Finland for Russia.
Andrej Illiaronov, Putin's economic adviser between 2000 and 2005 and now senior member of the Cato Institute think tank, said that "parts of Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic States and Finland are states where Putin claims to have ownership."
Of course there's a big difference between wanting something and being able to take it.
Argentina Is Joined In The Supreme Court By The Coalition Of Weasels
As they try to weasel out of their debts yet again.
Never mentioned is that the 'crisis' in Argentina actually consists of nothing more than that the politicians would rather spend money on various forms of vote buying than on paying their debts. They don't have to pay for any wars. (The Falklands war was way back in 1982.) They haven't had any natural disasters to speak of. Whatever crisis they have is completely of their own making, born of incompetent economic policy and waste
Argentina should be a wealthy nation yet they've continually lurched from bankruptcy to bankruptcy. The fault is strictly their own.
Why Were the Lights on at the Earth Hour Concert?
Or is it just another excuse for a self-congratulatory party.
Well based on the lady Danes I've met, I'm totally willing to help them out in their time of baby need.
The Dune in Your Head vs the One that Almost Got Made
Which could have have been awesome even given the special effects technology of the time.
Finally, the story of the greatest science fiction epic never made has finally been told. Jodorowsky's Dune is a new documentary about that beautiful, crazy-ambitious, disaster of an adaptation."They did everything right, really. Maybe a little too, right, you know?" said director Frank Pavich, when I reached him earlier this week via telephone from New York City.
"They" were Chilean cult filmmaker Jodorowsky, the self-taught visionary behind El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973), and his French producer Michel Seydoux. This was 1975, and Jodorowsky had assembled a dream team of actors and artists to bring alive Herbert's tale of a feudal-like interstellar culture driven by the market for a valuable substance caled the "spice." David Carradine was to play Duke Leto, Jodorowsky's 12 year old son Brontis was cast as Paul Atreides, Udo Kier (Andy Warhol's favorite actor) would be Piter De Vries, and Orson Welles was slated to play Baron Harkonnen. (Apparently, Welles was lured by promises of on-set French bistro food.)
...Even Mick Jagger and Salvador Dali had agreed to be in the movie.
And then add in H.R. Giger, Dan O'Bannon, and soundtrack contributions from Pink Floyd.
Swedish Man Buys Army Tank 'on Impulse'
Well I would have too if I found one in the same condition for just $11,700. Of course then the hard part would be explaining to the wife that the driveway now belongs to the APC so she'll have to park on the street.
Jimmy Johansson, a 23-year-old from Borlänge in central Sweden, can now add tank to his list of possessions. But the 76,000 kronor ($11,700) purchase wasn't something he planned."It was just an impulse buy from beginning... I went to look at a motor and my eyes were drawn to this instead," he told The Local.
The PBV 401, a Soviet-built fully amphibious tank that weighs around 12 tonnes and travels at a top speed of 80 kilometres per hour, is parked out the front of his grandfather's house while Johansson decides what to do with it.
And the best part of the story:
The purchase was encouraged by Johansson's mother.

Ironically, a girlfriend who was Danish a few years back basically - uh, well, screwed the pooch, so to speak, with me - by being so baby-making obsessed that it scared me off. She was no Emma (from the video), but a reasonably fetching slim blonde with a delicious (odd) British colonial accent (she grew up in southern Africa).
On that map - hard to believe Indonesia is mostly a tea country. But perhaps others can confirm that. Also, I see no data for Ethiopia, but ...... come on. Think we can reasonably guess it's a coffee country as it is the birthplace of said beverage and the oldest cultural ritual is the coffee ceremony.
Finland. Hmmm. I'm thinking, at most, that Putin might have mused about Karelia (part of Finland that has changed hands a few times). Hard to believe Putin has any designs on Finland in general. While on that topic, I continue to see no reason to think Putin's goals go beyond the age-old ones (suitably modified for the current situation) of maintaining a buffer on Russian borders, to exclude too much influence by major foreign powers. That, plus energy transportation routes, completely explains Ukraine. Georgia is different - Russia is obsessed with Georgia and always will be, for not entirely clear practical reasons. I still think any messing with the Baltics will be to chill their desire for too-close integration with NATO and the west. It's not territorial, and won't be, but won't end, either.

rickl, will check out that video - B-24, most produced heavy bomber of WWII (still surprises me to read that). I believe my favorite (astonishing) WWII US production stat was that at the surrender in September 1945, the US was rolling off a combat aircraft every 5 minutes, 24/7. Do the arithmetic on that. And we "switched off" ship-building in 1944 - yet our WWII production patrolled the seas, first with us and NATO allies, then with other navies, until very recently, 60 years later (need to check which WWII hulls are still in commission, somewhere).
Ricardo K., I have been planning to finally read up more on the Winter War and Continuation War. But one thing I already learned from research on winter warfare in general was that the Finns would target the Soviet field kitchens. Troops in those conditions experience a catastrophic drop-off in effectiveness if they don't get hot food at least every two days or so. One of many smart and devastating things the Finns did to punch way above their weight.

CO Alex, hmmm. It was for an article published back in the early 80s. Even if I could find the article, I might not be able to recall the source. And I think most of my articles are still in storage back in DC. This was way before digitization of media, so paper is all there is. I did a lot of interviews with USMC (they had northern Norway mission along with UK Royal Marines and Dutch marines - ?? - ) and spent a week with the Canadian Forces in the field during their big winter exercise related to their northern NATO role.
So for now - no, sorry. But I will try to think/search about it and come up with something.

I'm not getting the logic here.
Jeez, most of the military guys I've known have rather, er, earthy senses of humor. In fact, there were probably a few of them sitting around thinking of song titles in that thread.

It can't be a spoiler because history.
It would be like getting mad at your science teacher for giving a quick history of the development of the atomic bomb and how it made the Japanese surrender sooner than later because your history class was only up to 1943.

And of course filmcritters are going to call it an anti-suburban film, but from what I've heard and IMHO it could be about anybody who's lived a too-comfy life running from the realities of life. So, the subject matter is interesting enough for a dramatization but not to have read anything about it previously? Where did you think Andrew Davies, the writer of the series, got the information to base it upon? It's all history, armies with guns and blades as well the army of retail clerks wielding measuring tapes.

My mother was putting together some stuff for dinner and had a rice dish going in the microwave. We have a high powered (1250W) model and apparently this item was far more sensitive to the higher power than the other varieties she had recently produced via microwave. Smoke began billowing out of the microwave but I didn't notice upstairs because my vent is kept closed due to my room being much warmer than the others. Combined with the closed door I had a bubble of clear air but my sister was in the bathroom when the smoke started coming through the vent there.
We made my mother sit outside rather than allow her any more smoke inhalation, then got every window open and got the fans out that normally would have stayed packed away a few more months. (Especially this year.) Throughout all of this none of the smoke alarms made a peep. I pressed the test button on the unit near the kitchen and it screeched strongly, indicating the battery is good. (Most of you likely know that smoke alarms are designed to drive you up the wall when the battery falls below a certain level, forcing you to take action.)
So why the hell did none of the alarms go off? In the past we've had incidents where they were far too sensitive to normal cooking, now they've gone to the other extreme. If we had a fire there would have been no alert and those of us upstairs could have been trapped.
Something to look into this week.

That bison vid freaked me the hell right out, especially with all the quakes that have been happening out west lately.
You really shouldn't worry about Yellowstone erupting. There's nothing you can do about it except prepare like any other disaster scenario. If it does blow, there won't be much left to worry about.
I didn't see a date on the bison video, so I don't if that's recent, or even if it's from a part of the year the bison might be on the move anyway.

I was kind of surprised the guy waited as long as he did to drop to the lower floor. IIRC, he is not a young guy, 50-something, so he may have needed some serious melting glass motivation before trying that maneuver. At an earlier age he may have felt able to get all the way down on his own. I imagine that ledge looked terribly narrow from his perspective.

What sort of gear do you have in mind? For something like yellowstone, you'd be pretty much covered with gas masks + spare filters, sealed water and rifle. Either you're won't have anything to worry about if you're close, or, if not, it'll be a shit load of ash. Breathing and water will be the main concerns.

I don't recall if it is the unit that was here when we first moved in almost ten years ago. I vaguely recall the HOA or the property management company replacing them all at one point. I think the 2 halves of that emitter detector marriage degrade over time. And just like going deaf ( think of grandma as the emitter and grandpa as the detector) as one gets old but slowly compensating for it. They just go to crap on communicating with each other. So you end up with a lot of false alarms or total ignoring and no alarm. They say (or some say) replace your smoke detectors every 5 years for this reason.

Yeah a bang stick will probably be required. As for the rest of the stuff, regarding yellowstone, it'll be lower tier priority. Depending how close to the caldera you are and winds and stuff, a lot of day to day stuff won't be terribly affected. You will likely be able to still get that stuff. An immediate use supply wouldn't hurt, though. If it happens and you're in an affected area, you most likely won't be hunkering down. You'll be on the move away from the ashfall. You could well be able to still get that stuff as you go. Unless you're in the super heavy ashfall area and you can't move... you should check on that. It likely won't be particularly destructive outside the blast zone, what with surges and flows and stuff, so there won't be huge infrastructure damage. Unless yellowstone starts to build up massively before it goes kerblooey. If it does you'll know to get the fuck out pronto, anyway.

Ever have a nosebleed that just wouldn't quit?
Damn sinuses.
It's no big deal...it happens when my allergies act up, and I take stuff to dry me up then blow my nose too hard.
Lying down with a cold pack on my face usually stops the nosebleed.
Was here earlier...and was remiss in not saying:
Thanks for the great ONT, Mætenloch.
Lots of juicy content.
Even though I don't always comment on it...doesn't mean I don't read it all and appreciate it.

It's humbling to read about men like Admiral Denton.
Doing what he did in that interview...blinking the Morse Code message...was an incredibly brave thing to do, knowing what would surely happen to him if his captors found out.
And when they did find out...the all-night torture sessions that he was punished with, were so severe that even the guards "shed tears they could not hide".
Wow.
Rest in Peace, Admiral Denton.
May we be worthy of your sacrifices.

They probably all studied Morse so they could text each other in it ironically. I would learn the POW code instead.

Russian generals admit that the Winter War cost the Red Army close to one million casualties. Meanwhile american college professors claim the Red Army won WWII, on one in the rest or the world took part.
