I still can't believe the GOP is actually trying to come up with an immigration deal (which does not make any sense) when they should be focusing on jobs which would win votes, at least from current U.S. citizens.

Seriously, how much money does a police sketch artist make 'cuz I think I can draw about as good as the above sketch. Man with the bowling ball for a head in police custody.

Pretty sweet camera footage but should not give you the sweats like those crazy Ukrainian dudes hanging by their fingertips from building ledges and cranes do.

I'm sure I'm guilty of harassment for posting an article about an Air Force First Lieutenant that is also a Seahawk Cheerleader. I think former Eagles cheerleader Rachel Washburn would beat Alicia though in hand to hand combat.
School Closure Map

I guess some areas of the south could've used this map before the big snow/ice storm hit. Map shows how much snow is needed in your state before it closes. I know here in the Hampton Roads area, my kids have missed 5 days of school from the last two snow storms.

I have a feeling tonight's ONT will go some way toward bringing a tiny bit of closure to those who knew Joffen well. At least I hope so.
That said, I never had a whole lot of interaction with Joffen, unlike many of the longtime commenters here. But, for what it's worth, I am deeply sorry to hear about his passing and the anguish it's causing his friends here at the HQ.

Okay Horde, question. I want to buy a generator for the house. it's 1050 sq ft. Not a lot of cash. About 600-800. Not seeing propane as an option. Any suggestions?

You should be able to get a 5,000 watt generator for about $600. Check Costco. They're all the same. Four stroke engine attached to a generator.
Then buy a manual transfer switch so that you can route the power to wherever you need it in the house. And run the cable to a plug outside, so you don't have to worry about running it through windows or doors when you need the generator.
It will cost a bit, but if you can do the wiring (simple, simple stuff) yourself it will be just in your budget

Sure there is, and it's already been alluded to on the blog. GOP money comes heavily from business. Business likes cheap labor. Screw the base. Why they would do this in an election year, though, is beyond me. I can only think that the pressure is massive.
I admit I refuse to believe the cover story about GOP pros thinking that legalized illegals would vote Republican if only we will cave to the Left on this. No one is that stupid. Right?

Depends on all the electrical you need to run since the biggest driver in cost is watts. But look at Tri fuel generators. They give you options and rarely used gasoline engines can lead to problems when you need them most.

Believe me, I know how that goes. It can be difficult to get the right tone across in the comments section of a blog. So many different opinion expressed to so many different degrees of outrage, snark, and spite.
It's strange, but the comments of other people that have nothing to do with your own can have a way of coloring perceptions of what you're trying to say.

That one appears to require a full height slot but there are other brands and one of them likely has a low-profile bracket included.
This should let you use an inexpensive PC to get the job done. Something like a Shuttle SFF system might be well suited to the task.

Is your hot water gas or electric? I once ran my gas water heater off a computer UPS. The exhaust blower and solenoid totaled about 500W, I think? But an electric water heater will need some serious kilowatts and 240V, too. For emergency use, find the biggest power draw that you will need, and maybe double it.

That figure manifests itself in so many awful, strange ways. When I was at the depths, I'd find myself sitting in the middle of my bed at night sobbing like a grieving widow -- made all the worse by the self-loathing I felt for being a grown man sitting in the middle of his bed, crying for no apparent reason.

Getting upset or your back up at being questioned will most likely be take as a yes answer and also causing the person asking to question your emotional control.
The smaller organs of gov't use local information more often than the larger and can be very disrupting because they're local.
Even if you have none, you cold still invite speculation and unwelcome attention by LE.
Also recommend that you keep your information hidden or understated to your neighbors (no matter how long you've known them), your doctors, your children's teachers and pretty much anyone who isn't family (and maybe some of those).
Time to think proactively is now, not when they announce they will be doing searches based on information received.

Brother.
I offer this. I lost one of my closest in a murder/suicide. I spent hours on the phone beforehand, not 2 days prior saying "Do NOT go near that guy!"
I did everything. I've retraced my steps a thousand times over the last two years, and I cannot find fault with anything I did or didn't do. I did everything I could. At the end of the day, you can only do so much. Logically, you know you did it right.
Emotionally, survivor's guilt is still there.
It doesn't make sense, and there's no fixing it.
Just is what it is.
Press on and apply the wisdom to the next time you're needed. All you can do.

Uninteruptable Power Supply. AKA a "battery backup". It worked fine, but only for about 2 hours and then the battery was dead. I have a generator now, but I don't have a transfer switch. The few times I've used it, I've just backfed into both phases. I definitely recommend the transfer switch, though. The most crucial things were the fridge and the water heater. But I found it was nice to have some lights and the TV too.

For those of you who are friends of Joffen, I am sure he loved you. Sometimes, no matter if they know they are loved, the pain they cannot escape. Death brings guilt, even for those left behind by illness (or, in my brother's case, a sudden stroke had me thinking: "Could I have been a better sister? Could I have called him more? etc). I do know this: if you love someone and/or he/she is your friend or brother or loved one, they do not want you to grieve for them but to live your own life better.
I am so sorry for those who knew him. You are good people. I may only be a "fractional" moron, as I just pop in now and then and talk to myself...but I do know when I see a familiar name there is a connection, and I have seen this name and it saddens me. My prayers are for you as well as his family. xoxo

Easy crusher. I have Nero's ashes still in the car. They said they made a paw print.
Background:
he was a 14 yr old g shep. Survived bloat. HGE (hemorrhagic gastro enteritis), both of which have 20% survival rates, during his lifetime. He was a warrior, and my best friend.
I could barely muster the courage to pick up his ashes.
Years ago, some asshole shot my Arab horse, Misha. She died in a ditch.
So I know loss. Quite familar with it.
You know that little thing, Benghazi? Glen and I were working on a book and I talked with him 2 weeks before we died, and I was giving him shit about how he got his arm broken on a bike ride in NYC because his situation awareness wasn't up to par.
But. You don't "fuck you" people here.

I'm trying to find the words, and lord knows I'm usually not at a loss, but it just seems that it's best kept in the trenches. Still not the right words, but hopefully the point is made.

Everything is surreal right now; he was the rock that held not just the immediate family together, but the extended family as well. I keep expecting to see him sitting in his recliner talking college sports and NFL football. I think he'd love the irony in his visitation being right before the Super Bowl. And I think that's what I'm going to miss most of all, his sense of humor, especially when dealing with life's problems. I get a lot of that from him, which is probably why I enjoy The Horde so much.

Here's the trick: THERE IS NO DEAL! Not only was Boehner reportedly "unenthusiastic" over the "priniciples," he told Rep. Fleming that he was not committed to bringing ANY IR bill to a vote this year.
Now, if you get your news from the NYT, WaPo, or Talking Points Memo, you may have a different understanding of what happened. Apparently many conservatives get their news from those sources, oddly enough, since they are going nuts over the prospect yet again.
Aren't you tired of going through the Annual "Boehner's Imminent Immigration Betrayal" frenzy?
You see - you may wish to sit down for this - sometimes politicians say things to please one group of constituents even though there is no chance of actually following through. It's just for PR. This keeps the Chamber appeased, doesn't get the Latino groups worked up against us, and keeps Democratic attacks to a minimum as long as they think we are "working on it."
And there is no real risk of ticking off the Tea Party folks, because they stay ticked off at leadership anyway.

To you, Cthulu and to Shredded Chi, my glass is held high in thanks, praise, appreciation and respect.
May you know always that you stood in the breach, and were not found wanting, that your hearts were strong, your love steadfast and your loyalty found firm, faithful and true.
Would that we all had friends as noble and true, and that we should be such friends when called upon to be so.
To you, I hold this glass high, and may all who read these words, bear witness with me, you were and are Knights, and I, and we, willingly bend our knee in humble appreciation to that which you did, and tried to do, so nobly.
Your efforts were not to no avail. Though friend Joffen is lost, our love, respect and our appreciation of you, Cthulhu and Shredded Chi, is grown by magnitudes of order, and you shall be legend amongst us, evermore.
Stand with me, Morons, and quaff this toast to our stalwart warriors of the cause.

I've been thinking on things. About what Lincolntf said earlier.
I have to wonder if all our negativity about the future of our corner of the world didnt have an impact or an impression on Joffen.
Joffen was hung up on what he thought was his ruined life that can never be fixed. I have to wonder if comments here compounded that bleak outlook.
I actually try to be more sensitive saying some stuff around HR now that I know it hurts her. Whether it should or not is irrelevant at the moment.
But I think I should've known Joffen would be hypersensitive to some of the things I casually say here; things that could trigger cues.

I find that it's helpful when confronted by most deaths to be grateful for the end of someone's suffering.
I was overjoyed when I found my father that way and that's why I'm taking one of my dogs to get taken out tomorrow. He's sleeping now in my living room with a bellyful of ground chuck. 16 years old, deaf, almost blind, horribly arthritic, and a huge growing tumor on his ass.
For who's sake are we desiring to prolong the suffering of another? Is our comfort worth more than their pain??? If we want the best for them who are we really crying for?

That is not on you.
He chose to read here.
And his OCD over politics probably compounded the very real bigger problems in his life.
Do not look to politics for your satisfaction or personal vindication.
Far too many people here let the daily/weekly/monthly ebb and flow of the political process control their own happiness. If you let it, I guarantee that you will end up depressed. Why? Because politics in general is inherently unsatisfying and in most ways beyond your immediate control. Obsessing over something that you personally can't do much about and that is almost always unsatisfying is a near perfect recipe for depression.
And if you are clinically depressed for God's sake stay away from politics. There's always something somewhere horrible to focus on and the depressed have a preternatural filter that blocks everything except despair.

I'm so sorry.
I was just tearing up when I read the Canine Commandments.
We lost our little Dolly last April, and it still hurts every day. Her sister misses her still as well. People who say they don't know are idiots.
I was wondering why Daisy was laying almost upright on the sofa back, cuddling up to a jacket I threw down. I realized after an hour that I wore it when I was carrying her sister Dolly when she was so very sick in that Jacket, which I hung up and hadn't worn since. Both my wife and I cried when I realized why she was doing that.
Again, I really do feel your pain and wish I could say it'll get better. I can't. But I can say you were good and did everything you could for your wonderful dog.

Both you & Shredded Chi should go to sleep NOW! You are both mentally & physically exhausted. You did all you could. Joffen wasnÂ’t in the same home with you & there is no way you could see how darkly his view of things was.
I hope heÂ’s in a peaceful & happy place.
IÂ’m sorry I didnÂ’t respond earlier, I was reading all the earlier comments.

Amen. If people need to ask themselves these questions, then they should do so, then let it go.
If you care about someone, you do what you can for them. If you couldn't do more, it's because you couldn't. That's the simple truth of it.
You could not know what you did not know at the time, and you could not be where you were not.
Know that you cared about someone enough that you tried. And be at peace with that.

Thanks. For you, and the rest of the military veterans out there, toss a salute in the direction of West Tennessee about 1630 central time on Monday. The rifles should be firing and Taps playing about that time. Dad was a retired Senior Chief, and will be getting the appropriate sendoff. Another thing he would have found ironic is the ships going into the Black Sea during the Olympics, since he went there on USS Turner (DDR-834) in the '68 (I think it was 6
and they stared down the Soviet Black Sea Fleet (his General Quarters station was as the CO's bridge phone talker).
And this will describe the level of integrity that he had: Dad was a Personnelman (PN), the primary duties of which are the maintenance of enlisted records and processing all sorts of paperwork, including awards. Anyone who's been in the military knows how admin types are notorious for getting all kinds of medals, since they write up the paperwork for them. Dad retired wearing only the National Defense Service Medal and five awards of the Good Conduct. Anytime he got put in for an Achievement Medal or a Commendation Medal, he'd round file the paperwork since he knew it would be taking an award away from someone else. He did the same thing for the Expeditionary Medal he was entitled to from the Bay of Pigs; he told he couldn't in good conscience wear it after the way "those poor guys" got left on the beach with no air support.

I've been a recovering drunk and addict with over 12 years of sobriety, and have remained active in a 12-step Program that shall remain nameless. During that time, I've sponsored any number of guys, some of whom would go back out and drink and use drugs and get caught up in the life and are now dead or crazy or in prison. Early on, I blamed myself when this happened, and would agonize, wondering if it was something I said or didn't say, did or didn't do, that caused these men to crash upon the rocks. My sponsor, with decades of sobriety and hard-won wisdom, told me to cut that shit out. I'm just not that big of a deal.

I used to get a pretty good rise out of kids in gun safety classes by telling the story that even though pistols are like crack to teenage boys, if you put ten kids in a room with a gun on the table, the person to pick it up and wave it around will be the adult anti-gunner who's never touched one before and doesn't know how to clear it. I have seen it happen, and it gave the young something to think about: don't be like weird Uncle Kevin. Do we use the anagram PSH here? Well, it's often fatal.

In the St. Louis area, city and county government is completely separate (for now). Whenever we get winter weather, usually within hours, and often while it is still coming down, county roads are being salted and plowed. It generally doesn't take long before even side streets are passable.
City roads tend to develop into ice rinks, and stay that way for as long as the temps remain low enough to not allow melting.
What's the difference between city and county? It's not geography. It's government.

He loved the Little Rascals and we'd been talking about them during breaks at work for a couple of days, and it always seemed to lift his spirits. I told him I had four hours' worth of episodes on VHS, and he asked if he could borrow the tape for the weekend. I was happy to do so and brought it in to work with me that Friday.
It was the last time I ever saw him.
The other guy was a friend I'd gotten to know while drinking and smoking weed at parties and hangouts over the years. He died playing Russian Roulette with a .44 at another friend's -- supposedly. There's always been a little doubt over the actual circumstances, but that was the "official" line. He had been more involved in the whole drug scene than I ever was, and some people were less than happy with him at the time.

TL;DR Mumbling drivel to make myself feel better. Dogs rule.
I've been here as a mostly lurker under different names for 10+ years. I read through 50% of the ONT comments about 50% of the time. It's funny how people come and go, some I remember some I don't but there's a continuity across the "generations". I have no idea how that's relevant, I guess it's not lol but whatever, I liked Joffen's posts, always liked the Sunshine Patriot tag (EoJ came up with that? Ha, makes sense for some reason).
I'll add to the pile of "you all did everything you could, incorporate his memory into yourself and keep going". My wife's cousin just died after being in a few days long brain-dead coma from a heroin overdose; they pulled the plug. Second cousin dead in the last few years from a drug OD to go along with a suicide a few more years back by another cousin who was one of the children molested in that Boston priest scandal (he had gone public). She's got a big family but still... You do what you can and remember that you have your own life and family to take care of (reminds me of the Moron who was dealing with a seriously off-kilter step daughter or niece(?) I never found out how that ended).
I don't really believe that suicide is a sin. It can be selfish, but sometimes it's utter hopelessness and not a copout or spite. Being in that hole can be more than depressing, it can be downright terrifying. I've been pretty down at times, and have thought of ending it all but couldn't figure out how best to do it without messing everyone else up. Then I had a child and realized that no matter what happens I can't leave him.
Eh, I guess I'm writing this to add a virtual stone to his (temporary) marker, and to make myself feel better. Didn't work, but RIP Joffen, I've got a massive headache but I'll wash the ibuprofin down with a toast to you.
Regarding the dog commandments: dogs are the best, and I try to remind myself of those things whenever my dog bothers or "inconveniences" me. I probably don't deserve her.

Don't worry about it. It was well-stated, and well worth the read.
Anytime I think of making blanket statements about suicide, I think about those folks in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Technically, they committed suicide when they jumped out of those windows to escape whatever hell was at their backs.
That's the thing of it: you never know what hell is at someone's back, pushing them to jump, either literally or figuratively. Yes, it's hard for the survivors to carry on, but we are living, and living is ALWAYS hard to do.

Don't worry about it. It was well-stated, and well worth the read.

Welker ripping Sherman's dreads out. Dude, you're on to something! No wgo make me a sammich you Pajama Boy."

I was taking a sick day for Loma Prieta -- and was in one of the type of buildings that failed so spectacularly in Northridge -- 2 story apartments over parking. I'm laying there on the bed going, "yuck" when the shaking starts....and it's obviously something, so I stand on the bed.....then the wall behind my bookcase drops about 3", cocks back about 6", and abruptly throws all the books off the shelf, so they're hanging in air -- still arranged in groups where the shelves were, but about 1" in front of the shelf edge.
At least I had it better than my next door neighbor. He had just gotten home, shucked off his shoes and slacks, and was pouring himself a drink to relax when the fridge jumped him. He knew it was an earthquake, and -- despite living on the second floor of a two story building -- his primary concern was something falling on him.....so he decided to head for the middle of the koi pond in front of our building. He dodged the still-dancing fridge, and started making his way downstairs, being battered against the wall and stair railing at every step, until he got to the bottom, where he crossed the sidewalk, climbed the ornamental hill in front of the pond, and discovered that the shaking had stopped.
And, of course, that he was extensively bruised; in a dress shirt, underwear and socks; clutching an open 1.75 liter bottle of whiskey; standing in the landscaping.

I should extend this -- they found an individual when there was more than one with the same name in their city, who had a generic cellphone that didn't resolve to a physical address, in the middle of the wee hours of the morning, based on very sketchy information and concern from a stranger 3000 miles away, without waking up half the town or otherwise causing alarm. The deck was totally stacked against them, yet they persevered until they got to him.
And I understand, totally, why they shut down to me afterwards -- they had to notify next-of-kin first.
I wish they could have teleported to his side and saved him, but they did pretty damned well and I should write a letter. And I need to stop crying.

I was thinking of the poor cops thinking they were on some wild-goose chase after some internet bullshit and knowing that I'd been calling repeatedly with "please hurry" and trying not to stir up the people who pay their salaries.....then discovering the body. I'd even lodged a complaint that their website didn't have a phone number for 911-level calls coming from out-of-the-area. They did a good job and don't deserve to go through self-doubt flagellation.

Anyone got a joint?
Bogarters.
And in case you ever wondered why it's called bogarting, the Urban Dictionary has an answer:
To keep something all for oneself, thus depriving anyone else of having any. A slang term derived from the last name of famous actor Humphrey Bogart because he often kept a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, seemingly never actually drawing on it or smoking it. Often used with weed or joints but can be applied to anything.
I should make sure that MP4 is aware of this.

i dunno, it was just a sorta weird convo to have with your banker, that you just met for the first time. It was nevertheless a 'real' one. I see her again this am to complete our deal; I plan to stress that I didn't express sufficient initial sadness at what she must have gone through.

It's really funny [as my Gramps used to say, "funny -- peculiar; not funny -- ha, ha"], how often people have confided in me on the slightest of acquaintance -- and sometimes very shocking things. It's been happening since I was about 15, and sometimes -- to be honest -- I was not ready for the sort of revelation involved.
But I've always tried to listen and reason things through, and do my best to help people to a better understanding and a better place. I'm usually better at the "understanding" part, having read widely in my youth and been habitually curious.
One thing you cannot do, however, is to take all of the pain in the world into yourself. I can empathize and counsel, but have a very clear distinction in my mind between "my problem" and "your problem" -- not through any sense of vindictiveness or anything, but because it would have ripped me apart before I hit 20.
While you can tell her that you regret seeming removed from her obvious pain, the more distressing issue is her "friends" giving her grief about using drugs to numb the pain. What kind of "friends" are these, that demand she suffer?

I didn't know Joffen that well, and I know a lot of you here did. I apologize if I step on any toes by offering my perspective, I just wanted to say this.
There's no blame to be had here, he died of a chronic and deadly illness, one that medical science doesn't have a solid cure for yet, and I'm sure he's somewhere a lot better now.

"Raising the capita" to reduce the debt per, works great as long as all the newer members of the capita don't want any services, perks, and other assorted free stuff from the guys that gave you the debt in the first place. So obviously the GOP-e has come up with the perfect solution of even more unlimited immigration than we now have, namely, screw the base, pacify the CoC, and ensure cushy consulting gigs after the fall.
