Overnight Open Thread 3/22/14 (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Good evening, Morons and Moronettes...

I'm tmi3rd, and I'll be filling in tonight as CDR M is off doing his actual, y'know, real job and stuff.

All sorts of goodies under the fold... let's begin!

bathroom.jpg

The 15 Worst Places To Poop

Too much nutty awesomeness to quote, so just head over and enjoy. It's BuzzFeed, I know, but all the same...

Remember This?

Well, somebody ran with it, and made a genuinely pretty fun movie about it with Summer Glau, Steve Zahn, and Game Of Thrones' Peter Dinklage called...

Knights Of Badassdom

It's pretty fun. The link takes you to the Amazon portal for it. It's not Mel Gibson's Hamlet, but my wife and I (big Game Of Thrones fans) enjoyed the hell out of it.

The Best Revenge

Guy's Revenge: Texting the Complete Works Of Shakespeare

This is some seriously creative shit:

A man paid $133 for a PlayStation 3 on UK classifieds site Gumtree, but never received it—so he decided to get revenge on the fraudulent seller by texting him the complete works of Shakespeare.

Edd Joseph, 24, discovered that it's easy for him to simply copy the text of an entire play from his iPhone's browser and paste it into a text message.

He sends it as a single text, but it's then received in 160-character chunks on the seller's phone, the Telegraph reports. That means the 22 plays Joseph has sent so far have been delivered as 17,424 texts; by the time he's sent all 37, the seller will have received 29,305 texts.

Major props to Mr. Joseph- someone needs to give that guy a job in the dishing-out-retribution business.

So, About Fred Phelps...

As you're likely aware, Fred Phelps (the patriarch of the Westboro Baptist Church) took his final trip to go meet God on Thursday. At the risk of being serious for a second, nobody in America seems to be terribly broken up about it, but if there's a God in Heaven (and I very much believe there is), the reception awaiting Mr. Phelps is extremely unlikely to be pretty.

Though my opinion of the man ranks somewhere around my opinion of David Duke, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson, the Phelps family just lost a loved one, and I do offer my sincere condolences on that. I genuinely do think the folks outside the Lorde concert in Kansas City had the right idea here:

WBC.jpg

With that said, I'll let Iowahawk's tribute to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi offer a different tribute to Mr. Phelps as well. Its title is "Paradise Is Overrated".

Tonight's Cartoon Selection

This is one of my favorite Tex Avery offerings that I found watching Tom & Jerry, and I'm delighted to put it up here...

And finally...

I usually do a musical offering, and of late, I've been on a big Joe Satriani kick. One of the things that kinda goes out the window with young kids and a quest for medical school is enough time to get some musicians together and jam. Add to that my undying love for Robotech, and you get the Macross 25th Anniversary Air Show, set to "Light Of Heaven" by Satriani... it seemed appropriate, given the fact that we get the Blue Angels back this year.

Okay, y'all have fun! Spring is on the way, and so is November... if you can help out a friendly campaign, please do. Things look promising at the moment, but it's going to take a concerted effort on all of our parts to make sure that the last two years of SCOAMF are at the hands of a decidedly hostile House and Senate.

Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at March 22, 2014 06:48 PM (oFCZn)

64 Style guide note - always say Democrat Fred Phelps. Because he is a Democrat. And that whole clan of Phelps's, their church is a tax dodge, and for whatever reason people think that they are "conservatives." But they aren't. They are Democrats. Like this, from Mother Jones, not Fox news: Phelps remained prominent in state and local politics, working for years as a major organizer for the state's Democratic Party. (He still calls himself a Democrat, refusing to change just because his party has.) In 1988, Phelps housed campaign workers for Al Gore's first presidential run; in 1989, his eldest son, Fred Jr., hosted a fundraiser for Gore's Senate campaign at his home. Phelps has frequently run for public office -- for governor in 1990, '94, and '98, for the Senate in '92 -- always losing the primaries by a landslide. Because of their years as loyal Democrats, the Phelpses have even been invited to -- and attended -- both of Clinton's inaugurations. They protested at the second one. But Phelps' campaign against homosexuality actually began in earnest just before the 1992 campaign, when politicians, especially Democrats, began to openly court gay voters.

86 Did Christians back (8th Century ) then really crucify apostates? Crucifixion for apostates was a Muslim thing; Q. 5:33. Probably because it was a Zoroastrian thing before then. Never heard of Christians using crucifixion. Actually I'm not sure where Christians in England executed apostates at all as such. Now, in this context, if the "apostates" were converting to the Norse religion - they weren't "converting" so much as declaring their loyalty to the Vikings. In which case, I don't see the problem in hanging them high.

95 A weird and otherwordly thing happened tonight at the Roadhouse. My otherwise well behaved, but somewhat surly 17 year old was bored out of his mind with no plans with anyone... ..so he spent the evening talking to Mrs Road and me about college prospects, his future, and then we blasted some of his favorite music from my 1989 Bose 501s cranked through the big Onkyo receiver. My faith in humanity is restored. For the moment.

96 Will there be a travel thread tomorrow or was the anti travel thread the travel thread? I was spring cleaning and missed hanging out here today. Trying to keep my clothes closet safe from annoying moths. Cleaning all of it with borax, then spreading diatomaceous earth as well as vacuuming and washing things. I would bomb it to kingdom come but I have a dog and don't want to risk it.

98 Y'know, for a dumbass Saturday night popcorn flick, you could do worse than "Hansel & Gretal: With Hunters." Seriously. It didn't suck. Too many gratuitous f-bombs, though (gratuitous as in, "This line of dialogue is cool and funny because we said the f-bomb", except it's neither.)

99 Now, in this context, if the "apostates" were converting to the Norse religion - they weren't "converting" so much as declaring their loyalty to the Vikings. In which case, I don't see the problem in hanging them high. -- The English bishop insisted on crucifying one of these - definitely an apostate who had participated in sacking a church.

I investigated further and plotted the exact coordinates of Singapore Airlines flight number 68Â’s location at 1815UTC onto the aviation map. I quickly realized that SIA68 was in the immediate vicinity as the missing MH370 flight at precisely the same time. Moreover, SIA68 was en-route on a heading towards the same IGREX waypoint on airway P628 that the Malaysian military radar had shown MH370 headed towards at precisely the same time.

Anyone know how one might verify such a thing? A friend of mine sent me the link and I'm pretty sure my knowledge base is inadequate to say one way or the other.

I went to the PX to buy 501s that day, but I listened to them next to the 401s, and at lower volumes the 501s sounded muddy where the 401s were much clearer. Played loud the 501s were fantastic. But I lived in an apartment so I was not going to be able to play them loud. Bose literally does not make them like that anymore. I would love to pick up some 901s.

901s can do things that other speakers don't do....which are simultaneously awesome and got 'em panned by Consumer reports.

Years ago, when I was in college at the University of Casual Sun-Bathing, a guy in one of the multistory dorms aimed his 901s out a couple of dorm windows, over the dining commons, and into a grove of Eucalyptus near the student center, put on "Dark Side of the Moon", and fired it up.

Something in my head "sees" 99994 needs 6 without calculation (but then I need to count how many zeroes there will be in the result). Similarly, I know that 99964 needs 36. If I need more digits, I could go "nines complement" until the final digit, but then it's probably easier to solve going forwards.

OTOH, 99994 + 20 for me requires actual computation, because it's going to carry the 1 from the 10's place to the 100's, the 100's to the 1000's, the 1000's to the 10,000's, and the 10,000s to the new leading 1. That has me trying to mentally hold onto two operands and four carry digits, and I could accidentally drop one. Then I'd have to hold onto some nonsense partial sum (100014) and add the gutted carcass of the remaining operand (7) which generates yet another carry digit.

So, yes....I get what they're talking about because I use it in special cases.....and (with the knack of seeing what's missing), it can result in time-savings and the ability to do sums in my head without even writing them down.....but I sure as hell wouldn't try to explain it to someone who wasn't completely familiar and comfortable with basic two-digit addition.

He is very wrong.

I don't know how to handle someone like that except to get away from them.

Men don't like to be talked to when they are mad and have wounded pride and some women have high pitched voices that irritate.

I'd retreat for the short term, I think.  Then when he's simmered down tell him "I need to be left alone" is enough.  The hostility is painful and cruel.

The next time he does it,  pack his bags.  Change the locks.   Make an appointment with a counselor and put the card with the appointment time on the bags.

That's probably pretty bad advice.   I don't know what's going on with him or between you,  but he wants to sulk and was really rude to you in order to obtain sulk time.

I will never forget the look on mom's face when I came home with them (16, maybe? Yes, I still lived at home). Now I forget what the first thing I listened to was... Steely Dan? Maybe Dire Straits - Telegraph Road..

If not real history it was done to slight Christians...especially others who would not question it and say, "See! They were violent, too!" Which we were, but not with crucifixions as that is blasphemy.

I guess if mooslibs can get upset over a cartoon I am going to not watch this show anymore...not that they will care. I have plenty of other violence and gore to watch, but I have to say I enjoyed this series one until that scene.

I realize this is a fictitious show...but they crossed a line with me. Unlike Baroque, I do what I believe and say.

307 GGE - A method that I have used for propagating vines (cause I'm lazy). Take a segment of the vine, and bury it in some enhanced soil. Wait until..., oh, Fall, and it should have produced roots in the buried section. So you can just snip that section off. Alternatively, stuff the segment into a bucket or pot containing rich soil, and keep it reasonably watered. Drain holes. Then, after 3 months or so, you can just snip the segment off, and replant soil and all.

I thought I had read about this method once upon a time. When is the best time of year to do this? Can I do it now, or should it wait until the fall?

What I was thinking is scoring the vine in a couple of places and burying the scored section in a bag of potting soil. Do you think that would work?

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at March 22, 2014 08:21 PM (yh0zB)

309 GGE, they're easy to get starts from. You can either get a piece of the vine close to the ground and bury a section of it and water it til it looks like it's rooted, then cut it off, or take a cutting. I'd wait a little longer, then cut a piece that is long enough to have several knuckle-y looking things (nodes, I think is the technical term) then just stick it the ground or a small pot with potting soil...keep it watered ti it puts out new leaves, then plant it. I'd take several cuttings. Seeds are like kids...you won't necessarily get the same type of grape from a seed, whereas a cutting is a clone, so you'll get the exact plant you take it form.

Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at March 22, 2014 08:22 PM (4Ti1k)

310 All the cloning I have done: Clip mother at node, and immediately immerse in water. Dip clipping in Rooting Hormone (Root Tone is a common brand) and place in a small ball of rockwool or small container of vermiculite. Keep moist and under fluorescent lighting 24 hrs. cycle. Should have healthy roots in 3 weeks.

379 As much as love sticking to the basics, Crossfit sounds bad. A few years back the "new thing" at the gym was lifting weights off balance. You stand on a small mound, do whatever, all wobbly. The idea behind is that you'd utilize even more muscles! The only people who'd use the wobble-mound thing were chicks and weak men who's use pathetically light weight and had no muscles to show for their effort. I hated the thing because I always sliding the damn fool thing outta my way.

383 Didn't you ever see the "Rocky" movies? The guy with the more unorthodox gym and training methods (read crappy) always wins! Posted by: Thrawn agreed. I hate going to they gym and always prefer doing the real thing to the machine but sometimes the machine is easier to get to. I am fine with crossfit, however there is more room for injury. I have a feeling the more unstable nature of crossfit workouts, as opposed to using machines that only move in one direction and have safeties built in, offers some advantages.

I think she was in great shape.

433 "He has always been mr big shot . I made a major purchase for daughter 1 and he is pissed. I didn't ask his permission and he and her don't really get a long."

Absolutely chart-topping reason why marriages fail, blowing away infidelity and alcoholism and everything else: money disagreements.

I have found that the married couples I know who get along well with regard to money stuff make it an invariable practice to discuss major purchases with each other well beforehand.

Note that "major purchases" can and do encompass the category of gifts. Including gifts back and forth between the spouses.

I know one couple where the sweet but dopey husband went out and blew a HUGE sum on an anniversary present. Wife later confided to me that all she wanted was for him to reliably remember their anniversary. Card, flowers, chocolates, nice dinner would have completely sufficed. Instead there was this exorbitant white-elephant present.

When she brought that up, he got extravagantly butthurt and said, "Well, it's MY money and I wanted to make YOU feel happy," overlooking the fact that what he had managed to do was make her feel stressed instead of happy.

Because while it was his money, technicall, both of them teamed up with their incomes every month on the joint household budget, and the big dope had basically thrown away his entire cash cushion on this over the top gift. Which meant that if they had a cash crisis after that, it was going to be on her to make up the difference.

I said "Thanks, but I already knew that" and she wanted to know how, I told her because the lampshades matched the drapes. Most wimminz don't dye the eyebrows, so if they match...pretty sure it's natural.

But don't let it get to where he's screaming at you. As soon as he gets pissy, tell him you're leaving til he calms down. Is it in fact his house?? That would piss me off more than being told to shut up, the being told to leave "his" house.... and if you're married and your name isn't on the deed, you do have a problem. And a lot of little signs are adding up to a big problem.

I've never been in one because the marketing and pricing tells me all I need to know. They sell $10 per month gym memberships, based upon an annual contract, to people too intimidated to use an actual gym. They have 5M members. They are betting that the majority of those really out of shape, easily intimidated folks, never (or rarely) use the equipment. Meanwhile they actively seek to run off those who are serious about fitness. Have you noticed they never air ads about their success stories?

Skin is too sensitive to mess with those; I did try and dye my eyebrows once when I dyed my hair dark, and it was a nightmare of biblical proportions. II try and remember to darken them with a pencil. I went a kind of dark ash blonde/ light brown. Never have attempted to dye the carpet. Waxing it was enough of a horror, although it was funny, since we attempted it at home and blood was drawn and poor Thor was scarred for life.

Capote died in Bel Air, Los Angeles, on August 25, 1984, aged 59 from liver cancer.[45] According to the coroner's report, the cause of death was "liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication."[46] He died at the home of his old friend Joanne Carson, ex-wife of late-night TV host Johnny Carson, on whose program Capote had been a frequent guest.

Okay, I'll handle that *shudders and vomits* when the time comes but otherwise, what's the time-line here bub? I OBVIOUSLY can't EVAR become a cat lady due to allergies. So, what is so WRONG about me getting and keeping a new puppeh?

497 Dishing out retribution....  I've a story about that.

So I moved from an apartment to my first home.  Nothing odd about that.  Cut the gas and water and such, but it was the middle of winter so the heat needed to stay on.  I had moved to a different city, so all bills and services were ended from the apartment.

Five years later, I go to buy a car and find a ding on my credit report for the tune of about $38 from People's National Something-or-Other.  From the name, it was probably a Communist organization.  I called the number, it had been disconnected.

After a bit of investigation it turned out to be People's Natural Gas, a provider in the Midwest that I had, in fact, used.  I call them up, they transfer me to the only person who can operate the "old system" that contains this old bill. We chat, bill gets found, I write a check and send it off the next morning.  I check the bank a week later, it's been cashed.  I call again.

I ask Madge, or whatever her name is, if we're square and can release this late payment ding on my credit report.  She responds that she cannot, for between the Monday I sent the check and the Thursday they applied it to my bill the billing cycle had happend and there were four cents of interest accrued, and what was to become of that anomaly in the accounting?

I asked for her to ask her boss if such interest could be waived, to no avail.  I owed my debt, and I owed interest on same.  Which I would pay in full before they would remove this blight from my credit report, according to the supervisor.

So I sent another check.  For a nickle.  And I waited a week until they cashed it.  Then I called back.

I was transferred to Madge, or whatever her name was, for she was the only one capable of accessing the Old System.  And we verified that not only was I paid up, and the credit report would be updated in the next few weeks, but in fact I had a $0.01 credit in the system, and could apply that to my next bill.

At which point I stated that I was no longer a customer and they could send me a check.

Hemming, hawing, offers of holding said penny until I was again a customer, all were denied in favor of the check.  A manager takes over the call, same requests but even less care on my part.  You now owe me money, send me the check.

They sent me the check.  I showed it at the credit union as proof that the debt was paid in full.  I purchased the car with the help of a very delightful loan rate in part because that ding on my credit report was removed.

And I never cashed that check.  So for seven years their accountants have been dealing with a missing penny, all because four cents of interest accrued could not be waived.

507 When I bought this house I found a credit ding on my report from a power company from a previous rental several years prior. We had told them to pay the final bill with the deposit, but they didn't do that and instead dinged our credit.

I went ahead and paid the bill...and then a couple of weeks later we got the deposit check back...

Mind you, it had been several years since we had moved out of the house where we used that power company, and they had held the deposit for all those years because we had a final bill. Makes a lot of sense...

531 Well, since we are talking about politics here, is there anybody who knows anything about rVotes?  Here's the website:

www.rvotes.com

I saw a presentation at my local Republican state senatorial convention today and it looks so good that I am wondering if I am missing something.

The story is that it is a data system that was written by the guy who developed the VAN system that is the backbone of all the Democrat data tools that Obama used to kick our asses twice.  The guy sold out his interest in his previous company and waited five years for his non compete agreement to expire then wrote a new system he could sell to Republicans.  It is scalable so it can be used for any campaign from the precinct level to national.  Because it is standardized and secure, it allows each campaign to keep its own information private but it allows campaigns to share information if they want to.

Campaigns spend millions of dollars to gather information about voters.  Among Republicans, that information is basically thrown away after each campaign.  Democrats add it into their database and use it to target their efforts to where they will get them the most results for their money.  If a campaign won't give their data away, perhaps they will sell it to defray some of the campaign costs.

If you have ever done precinct walking or canvassing, the tools that come with this product seem like they would be enormously helpful and, best of all, they are set up to allow the ground troops to update information on the list when, for example, somebody has died or moved away so that the campaign does not waste money sending mailers to people who are dead or no longer there.  It can also help with voter registration and get out the vote efforts on election day.  The GOTV feature is likely to be what allowed Barack Obama to be reelected despite four years of crappy performance and a Jimmy Carter level of unemployment.

Anyway, if anybody has had experience with this system or with the Democrat system, I would love to hear about it.

536 There's a lot more to it that data, and GOTV per se. But yes, the GOP was behind like a mofo in that area. There is so much more to do that it's not even funny, and I do on occasion despair because it is not getting done. Everyone knows the stakes are high, but everyone is pulling in radically different directions. The sad thing is how often we've seen what's at the end of so many of those roads, and yet we never learn. Which itself is a lesson... which we never learn.

Well, see, that is the beauty of a system that collects enormous amounts of data for a 21st century marketing campaign.  It allowed Obama to target his lies specifically to people who would respond to them.  Since I a) don't use tampons and b) would likely view such a claim as an obvious lie, it would be counterproductive for Obama to spend money sending me a mailer or running an ad on a TV show (or web site) where I am likely to see it.  In fact, were I even considering voting for Obama, a porgie like that would be likely to turn me against him.

However, by clever analysis of the data, Obama's minions could put out that story aimed at credulous women who could be persuaded to go to the polls and vote for TFG.

Some of that stuff is less to persuade people who to vote for but to get people who are also inclined to vote for your candidate to the polls.  The "Republicans will ban the sale of tampons" sounds like the kind of thing that they put out to whip up low motivation Democrats to get to the polls.  That sort of stuff works the other way.  The Obamanationists also targeted messages that, for example, Mitt Romney signed an assault rifle ban while he was Governor of Massachusetts at gun owners in swing states in order to get them to stay home on election day.

Well, you were not the target audience for that message so they did not target it at you.  I had not heard the ban on tampons story before you wrote it.

Isn't micro-targeting great?

Political speech has pretty strong protections under the Constitution which is why those prosecutors in Missouri who were threatening to prosecute anybody who "told lies about Obama" for libel were so outrageous that even Democrat law professors were condemning them.

You can pretty much say anything you want about your political opponent during an election campaign in America without fear of legal consequences.  The system depends on the voters being smart enough to catch on when somebody is lying.  Given the results of the last two Presidential elections, one might argue that is a flaw in the system.

The election and especially the reelection of Barack Obama would tend to argue that data and GOTV is enough to get a spectacularly flawed candidate into office.  That would seem to suggest that if both sides are armed with equally effective data and GOTV tools, the side which has a better message and which is not running an America hating communist, Chicago machine corrupt, race bating, incompetent, feckless douche bag as a candidate has a better chance of winning an election.

Certainly there are other factors like the complete dominance of the legacy media by the forces of evil and the fact that some significant fraction of people in their 20s seem to think that gay marriage is a more important issue than whether the President will continue failing the US economy into a global economic depression or blunder us into a nuclear war but there is no reason to just give away that much electoral advantage by refusing to make use of data and GOTV tools that can help us win elections.

Well, that is not the system today.   The Democrats have adapted to the current environment.  If Republicans cannot, then everyone in the United States will have to adapt to living under Democrat rule for the rest of their lives.  Or until they crash the system due to sheer, bloody minded, ideological driven incompetence.

Then we will get to live under our local war lords until some more competent nation with imperialist ambitions invades and takes over.

553 percent of federal budget for starters. there is a bullshit way of arguing what exactly is "corporate welfare" as well. funny, it never includes anything done by Buffet, Soros, Steyer, etc. Posted by: jc at March 23, 2014 04:34 AM (PlzOe) fnord (PlzOe) It's not even close to possible to calculate graft, funny contracts, cronyism and tax breaks as a percentage of budget. And you'd have to do it at the State and local level, too. You could start with Cato and Forbes, but I think any such numbers are automatically highly suspect. If at all possible find out how they figured it. Ultimately if you're trying to bring facts to a political argument, well, I wish you the best. My experience is that doesn't make a difference unless you have the other party completely surrounded and keep them that way.

there is always some hope, but since both parties are determined to embrace ignorant BS I don't see a point in investing a whole lot of hope into anything that is going to happen in the near future.

It's the hope in one hand, crap in the other hand problem.  I know damn well which hand is going to fill up first.

No matter what we do, a bunch of universal truths are going to play out cuz the process has been well under way for decades:

-- there will be no free lunch,

-- there will be blame casting, thievery, and fighting,

-- there will be continued voting against reality and consequences,

-- there will be a continuation of postponing the inevitable even though that will only make the outcome worse when the inevitable unfolds, and

-- and a whole bunch of other stuff every moron here already knows.

559 I am quite familiar with despair and I have tended towards the Let It Burn philosophy as the reasonable reaction to a hopeless situation.

Take a look at what Democrats themselves have said about the data collection, analysis and GOTV tools that they have been using since 2005.  There is a whole lot of stuff out there with Democrats saying that these tools are the reason that they have been achieving electoral victories with the same resources that they had before but they are now applying them more effectively.

There is still plenty of reason to expect that we will lose.  The Washington DC Republican Party establishment hates us.  The political consultants who dominate the party establishment hate this technology because they have their own individual databases which they make big money by selling and they prefer that they all be incompatible.

To be honest, I expect that the people at the top of the GOP to cling to power and to be quite effective in blocking any changes to the status quo while Democrats continue to win elections and continue to impose their will on the country with all the bad consequences that are the inevitable and predictable results of their misguided policies.  Maybe losing two elections is not enough to get the GOP to change.  Maybe the GOP needs to lose 17 presidential elections in a row before they will decide that maybe we might need to do things a bit differently.  I won't know because I will be long dead by that point.

What I think is that since the people at the top of the party are so comfortable losing elections, they are not going to change anything but that there is a possibility that we proles might be able to introduce changes at the bottom and eventually grow to a critical mass so that it becomes the path of least resistance for them to go along.

If the Republican party stops getting results completely, it will be abandoned like the Whigs were, hemorrhaging voters and whimpering into obscurity as party bosses refuse to make necessary changes.  Something will replace it, and be enormously successful in spite of the errors it will make along the way, simply because it's not what the other side or the collapsing side is selling.  The only thing that stopped us from striking out and forming our own party was the idea that we're in a national crisis and might not have time to turn this ship around if we build a new party from the ground up, but we may soon be left with that as our only choice.

======

My apologies.  I no longer feel despair because I have reached a certain level of acceptance.  Unfortunately I sometimes forget that I need to hold my tongue because other people may still be on their personal journey and my thoughts can cause an upwelling of their despair.

One of the things I have come to believe is that the difference between the group of people I tend to associate with and those other folks is an understanding of consequences.  Some people simply keep voting against consequences because they believe there is some kind of magic that will make consequences disappear.

Libertarians and Conservatives tend to accept the idea that bad decisions have consequences that will not magically disappear.  Part of that acceptance is recognizing that consequences that are underway will have to play out in full.

From acceptance comes resolve.  Magic won't save us.  Fortitude and character will.  My hope is born and lives in my understanding that we have much more fortitude and character than we know.
