Abdominal Tourniquet

Pretty incredible piece of emergency medical gear. 'Game changer': Tourniquet for abdominal wounds is already saving lives. Might want to add this to your bug out/burning times bag.
This summer in Birmingham, Ala., a man came into the emergency room where Croushorn works with a gunshot through his upper arm, and was bleeding profusely. The bullet had pierced the armpit, destroying one of the body’s largest arteries.“It’s really a death wound,” Croushorn said, because it’s often not possible to stem the bleeding enough to get the victim to surgery alive. “I’ve treated a number of them and they all died.”
He applied the abdominal tourniquet and persuaded a wary nurse to remove her hands from the wound. There was no bleeding. Croushorn said the patient made it to the operating room, where a shocked vascular surgeon repaired six inches of torn artery. The man lived.

The paper said policy elites in the West are still clinging to the illusion that rich countries are different from poorer regions and can therefore chip away at their debts with a blend of austerity cuts, growth, and tinkering (“forbearance”).
The presumption is that advanced economies “do not resort to such gimmicks” such as debt restructuring and repression, which would “give up hard-earned credibility” and throw the economy into a “vicious circle”.
But the paper says this mantra borders on “collective amnesia” of European and US history, and is built on “overly optimistic” assumptions that risk doing far more damage to credibility in the end. It is causing the crisis to drag on, blocking a lasting solution. “This denial has led to policies that in some cases risk exacerbating the final costs,” it said.

I had something similar happen. the sump tank went dry floaty stuff that had gotten in was now on the bottom got sucked into the screen and clogged it when spring water came in. I took mine apart but if there is enough play to shake the pump/drag it against what it sits on she may get enough dislodged to get it to work partially. May not be your problem but worth a try.

Posted by: chemjeff at January 03, 2014 10:16 PM (9GG/0)
The problem seems to be that there are a lot more irresponsible tenants and landlords than there are responsible ones. Any solution is going to have losers; a blanket restriction means that some landlords will lose out. On the other hand, if the town tries to crack down through other means (such as heavier police presence, more fines, stricter regulations) then you'd see complaints about how they were interfering in people's lives. Personally, I prefer simpler rules to more complex ones, so I prefer the former solution.

Drake and Prince - a ghey doggeh couple? Doesn't matter, because the difference in size can't be overcome.
Years ago, I dated a guy who owned an Old English Sheepdog named Peach. One morning we stepped out into the backyard to find that a neighbor's male Scottie was trying to mate with Peach. He had his paws up on her butt, his little heinie was pumping furiously - but he was quite a distance from the mark. Peach stood there very patiently for a few minutes and then got kinda tired of it and walked away and the Scottie fell over. We were laughing like hell as he put his head down and walked back to his own yard. I think he really was sort of embarrassed.

Posted by: cthulhu at January 03, 2014 10:25 PM (T1005)
The problem with that is I need to run a hose probably 75 feet to get out of the house, with an elevation change of ~14 feet. That's asking a lot from a portable pump. Even if I can do that, capacity would likely be a couple hundred gallons an hour, which would probably temporize the problem but I doubt would be enough to lower the levels quickly if at all. By comparison, a replacement main pump would have 10 times that capacity. I do have a battery backup pump, but I don't think that works either, or is at least woefully unequal to the task of lowering water levels.

</i>You're not guaranteed that your investment will pay off. The city doesn't owe you anything. Owning a home carries risks, just like any stock or bond or any other type of investment. Don't like that you can't use the property for what you wanted to use if for because of city ordinances? Sell it? That means a loss? Tough.

but they'd be interfering in the lives of people who *deserved to be interfered with*, i.e., the deadbeat landlords and tenants, not the decent landlords and tenants.
Posted by: chemjeff at January 03, 2014 10:31 PM (9GG/0)
And how are they supposed to identify the deadbeats? No, they'd end up in everyone's business somehow, either through trying to equally enforce the law or because it would encourage neighbors to tattle on one another. See almost any homeowners association with any teeth.

You're not guaranteed that your investment will pay off. The city doesn't owe you anything. Owning a home carries risks, just like any stock or bond or any other type of investment. Don't like that you can't use the property for what you wanted to use if for because of city ordinances? Sell it? That means a loss? Tough.
Posted by: Colorado Alex at January 03, 2014 10:33 PM (lr3d7)

You want municipal stupidity?
I give you . . . Galveston, TX
Spent $500k on a hi-tech seawall parking program. (Previously, seawall parking had been free) Gotta skim the pockets of all the Houston daytrippers, you know.
Started the program in August 2013. At the end of the summer season.
"Planners" and "City Officials" expected to clear $400k to be used on seawall improvements. You, know, free money. From $900K in expected revenues ($500K + $400k)
Galveston businesses objected and said paid parking would deter customers.
So how did it turn out? Revenues were an "unexpected" $200K.
The taxpayers of Galveston are eating $300k. And there are no seawall improvements.

And the city in question found that excessive numbers of rental properties were creating a nuisance as well. I agree that no one is saying that deadbeats who create a problem shouldn't be punished. The problem is how do you deal with the problem. Do you restrict the number of houses that can be turned into rentals? Do you increase police presence on the streets, increase the number of beaurecrats to enforce codes? Either way has costs and benefits. To me, the former is the better choice, since it involves less government activity and less involvement into the daily lives of citizens.

the city is wrong. a hypothetical city with all renters and no deadbeats isn't disturbing anyone. but under the city's plan, this condition would be illegal.

well I am not in favor of less government merely for less government's sake. I am in favor of less government so that it does not infringe on the liberties of the people. creating less government that turns into a greater infringement of liberties of the people, in this case the liberties of renters who aren't disturbing anyone, is not right.

Care to cite your evidence that the city is refusing to enforce the law?
Like it or not this is governing; the city government has to balance out competing interests and decide what is best for the city as a whole. In this case, some landlords lost out. That sucks for them, but it doesn't make the decision any less legitimate.

Never mind that the loss of vehicular mobility interferes with innocent citizens' ability to engage in the economic solutions they have crafted and will result in an eventual loos of property....

Okay...the article and your argument are predicated that this destruction of property rights is predicated on what precisely there sport?
Rampant abuse of the upkeep and behavior of renters.
Oh gee well I guess there must not be a rampant problem if there is proper enforcement gee what a leap of logic!
The police department or Sheriff is not enjoying this task work. It bears a cost and will reduce the manpower available to do other things. This quaint problem matrix is addressed by the skills of management and er "leadership."
MN Retard Village must have the most specialest tenants on the planet to need a body of law that not even Detroit is deploying.....
Somehow the US Army deals with bad tenants without you know "massive retaliation" being the doctrine....

they would be doing less damage to their market in using condemnation and eminent domain overreach than this action.

I get that like JWest you are in love with other people controlling other people's property as a hobby but my analogy above is more apt than your dodge champ.

Went to Academy (sporting goods store) today to get Lubbock bound daughter some warm gloves and a winter jacket. You see none of that stuff was available in July and August before she left for TxTech.
Well, nearly all of their heavy duty winter gear stock has been severly depleted. We found gloves in her size, but had to take a jacket in large rather than medium. No other stores in the immediate area had that jacket at all or in any other size except large.
There was plenty of spring-weight running and workout togs available. And the Clearance racks were full of shorts and Texans jerseys.
We had shopped online for cold weather stuff but had found many items out of stock in her size - Ladies medium / small.
I'm sensing that retailers are going light on their seasonal inventory and will willingly miss out on late season sales by being sold out if it means not being stuck with surplus stock at the end of the season.

Anyone see the Megyn Kelly thing about female Marines unable to make the minimum standard? OMG! I had to interrupt hubby a few times, during his TV watching, to shout and proclaim! The real topper was the theory, posited by Kelly, playing devil's advocate, not her words, that upper body strength is... wait for it... a social construct. Yep. Girls don't get to participate in the same activities that boys do, and therefore they miss the opportunities that males have to develop upper-body strength. As Dennis Prager would say, this is something you have to go to graduate school to believe.

I'm not sure that's good for plastic pipes.
How many years have you (CC) been in the house? This does seem to be exceptional weather. Oh, and you might see if you can increase the slope of the pipe at the point it exits the basement -- that'll increase the speed of transit as it's going outside and make the water less likely to have time to freeze before it exits the pipe.

It is a politically painful one perhaps because he is running headlong into his party doctrine on the issue but he now has criminals wargaming the chance they will get a 9mm pain reliever when they rob or B+E.

In no manner was I attempting to include you in my criticism of libertarians in general. I was referring to ones I have argued with in the past. I know nothing of your positions, and did not intend my comment as an attack upon you.
That being said, I think you and I have a strong disagreement on the role of municipal government in our lives, as well as their chosen methodologies.
I know many people who's lives have been ruined by the local municipality. In 1978, a law was passed in this state allowing municipalities to tear down houses by simply calling them a nuisance, and without the need to go through a court proceeding.
I personally feel that a state legislature should not be able to trump the fifth amendment, but apparently the legal system feels otherwise. (Another bunch that needs to be tarred and feathered.)
"nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
As far as i'm concerned, municipal governments have too much power, and too little check on their abuses.

The rationale given by a supporter on the County Board of Supervisors, after the claims about landfill had been shown to be ridiculous, was that they get into the ocean to make seals choke. So do we crank up the littering laws? No, of course not, because that would mean going after the actual offenders rather than wielding power over everyone.
Have I mentioned that I cannot recall when there was last a member of the County Board of Supervisors I'd cross the street to piss on if they were on fire?

- Why keep Kluwe on for over a mil when they can get someone competent in the same position for less than a third of that
- Kluwe was a pain in the ass because of his quite vocal support for gay marriage.
FWIW whatever you think of Kluwe's activism, he strikes me as quite the narcissistic liberal douche.

I'm pretty sure that Tebow had some opinions. I'm even surer that it killed his career (more than that game against the Patriots). But he never played up like he was Maximus The Confessor reborn.

A more cynical person might suggest that Kluwe jumped on the gay marriage bandwagon because he thought it might give him job security that his stats don't warrant. Perhaps he thought that there would be some underground rule about "Don't fire the vocal supporters of gay marriage lest you make the NFL look homophobic," but that never happened.
And when that back benching end of career NBA player came out weren't all the journalist all excited that we'd probably see athletes in lots of sports coming out.

Thank heavens, I am not expected to actually produce any sort of art. If I were, I would respond with something I had knit.
This class includes field trips to various museums. We are going to DC and Delaware next week then the following week will include a trip to Grounds for Sculpture in Princeton, New Jersey. I'm kind of excited about the Princeton trip, aside from having to spend 10 hours with Art students.

Of course it wouldn't be expected....but aren't you getting lecture after lecture about how art is the ultimate form of communication, transcending all boundaries? When instructors say that -- and believe it -- it means that you could slip the aforementioned plaque in and get the top grade in the class, 'cause you transcended the boundaries of taste, decorum, assigned work, and responsibility.

I am pondering sending him out to Alberta to learn hydraulics or diesel repair if that is what he wants.
The key to if/when we leave is my wife and son.
I can't go "home" to Canada if they won't go, and I am not going to bully them into it. Wife has some interest and the GI bill so she is looking at McGill. She brought up wanting to peruse the instant immersion French program for the French bonus points on the immigration battery.
My grandfather who lived in the Big A told me as a boy that America was where I belonged (this was maybe 77-7
He also said to me, if America goes socialist go to where you like the scenery and never forget "fools don't last on the tundra."
I miss him, he treated me like a thinking person not a dork child who couldn't reason.

Nope I was a lost Ohioan....
My parents split and my grandfather had holdings in Alberta and got custody of my brother and I for a bit.
The happiest time of my early life was in Alberta, Grandpa was an Ohioan born and bred. Canada has very generous residency allowances if you have an economic interest in the nation past a certain point. He probably could have immigrated but he was a fierce patriot WW2 vet.
Thing is he was not really a huge fan of the new deal or the price controls that were going on when I was born.
He and my grandmother taught me some mnemonic tricks and readings and some math early.....
I owe him a lot.

The 2-state “solution” offered by Clinton (thankfully Arafat said no) and the one offered by Powell (literally days before 9/11/01) were evil enough… but Kerry has surpassed them with this! I’ve always been against the US telling Israel what to do wrt “Palestine”, but *this* — using OUR troops to carry out their wicked plans — didn’t enter my imagination.
http://tinyurl.com/ldme89t
So, Obama just lost Fallujah to AQ today and he already lost Afghanistan. Willingly. Oh, but "Palestine" is worthy of our troops' presence!
I'm so disgusted right now.
Americans won't let this happen, though. America overwhelmingly supports Israel so I know they'll be against this as much as they were against our involvement in Syria. It just makes me so mad to see what their evil plans are.

The greater upper body strength of men is a "social construct?" I knew a woman in college who lifted weights. Her upper body was about as toned as a female's body can get. That didn't prevent her from being raped by a guy who broke into her apartment. He didn't pull a gun on her either - he just beat the crap out of her.
I get that Megyn was playing devil's advocate. There are still too damn many young women who have seen movies showing buff women kicking and beating up on guys and they think that represents some sort of reality - because they've never been actually attacked by a man.

In those fields?
Maybe Diesel but he needs to get basic familiarity first.
We are in South Carolina and I do not know the lay of the business world here as well as I could.
In Louisiana I have contacts in the wrecking and repair business that have offered to put the lad up a summer if he is inclined and get practical experience with mechanical work or at least preventive maintaining like oil and lube work.
He shows some interest in it but I am also trying to keep him focused on his school work...."the eternal battle."
He's a good kid mostly, a little less driven than I was at his age, but I was already working and laying the groundwork to leave home.
He and I are living very different lives at age for age.
Mostly I feel good about that, but the one thing I fear is he is not as terrified of failure at a job as I was....
in his defense how could he be? He has never had one beyond chores yet.

In Alberta and also Saskatchewan there are quite a few opportunities in the trades because of the shortages in manpower, but you have to be very careful about how the work experience transfers to the U.S. My brother has had this problem.
At least you have some time for this to shake out. If necessary, try to get your kid into a place like the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) or its counterpart in Calgary (SAIT).

if the American people support the Democrats aiding in harming Israel it is another mark against this nation being worthy of any loyalty at all.
They will be inserting us into a warzone for the 3d and arguably 5th time with no pushback from the media that excoriated Bush for loving conflict....

The problem with trying to regulate machining into the ground is that you can get Sieg mills and lathes for just a couple of hundred bucks, and their capabilities exceed most of what John Moses Browning (PBUH) had available at the turn of the century.....and, of course, it's tough to run an industrialized society without machinists.

I made good money in the 80's from people who thought that an "accounting system" was what came in a box from a software vendor. That's like saying you have a "house" when you've poured concrete for the perimeter wall. It isn't an "accounting system" until you know where all the information is, where it came from and how it got there, and can validate it -- and that involved shipping clerks, accountants, filing cabinets, forms, and procedures....and, if you're lucky, a computer program that won't fight you each step of the way.

Answer: MATH!
Posted by: The Hickster at January 03, 2014 10:16 PM (TI3xG)
even better is VP's/ management who buy new software/financial packages and rather than learn how the software actually works so they can maximize efficiencies, they want to pound on the 'new system' until it replicates the 'old system'.
WTF is the point of a new system if you pound on it until it replicates the old system?
The best quote ever is some VP from Operations who got the new financials after they spent $10M is
" hey these reports look the same, why did we just spent $10M?"
Posted by: 7tvod at January 04, 2014 02:13 AM (7tvod)
I always loved the theory that the accountants should choose the new system because they were the ones who wanted all this bullshit information, anyway -- and then whinging about it FOREVER. I finally got to where I flipped it around -- "we're going to get all this information from you whether you like it or not -- so pick something you're comfortable using.....'cause I'll pick the blindfold, ball gag, and branding iron otherwise."
If the information is in the box, it just takes another report to get it out -- but the guys who put it in the box should choose the manner it will get input.

zactly,
what data do you want recorded?
where is is stored?
(ie. subsystems like AP, AR, HR, etc.)
How is the useful accounting info segregated?
(unit, account, cost center, dept, Legal entity, etc.)
then what reports do you want?
then where is the data kept?
how to pull info from multiple modules into the report?
but if you learned accounting at a big 8, 6. whatever you don't learn this for
Posted by: 7tvod at January 04, 2014 02:34 AM (7tvod)
You used to -- back in the early 80s and prior....because all the clients had paper records. But when I was at #9 of the "Big 8" (around 86-87), they were already talking about computerized audit plans and IBM/PC systems were already pretending that you could be an accountant without knowing a debit from a credit.
When it took you 15 minutes per attempt to cross-foot some bad-boy with a 10-key, you didn't just trust to luck that it would.

I must have some pretty dumb tomaters...I haven't been able to teach them to gimme some decent fruit, even though they get huge. Like, five feet tall and wide, yet only producing about 5 tomaters. Indeterminate bastards.
Posted by: model_1066 at January 04, 2014 04:06 AM (/gJVs)
Hint #1 -- NO nitrogen. If you fertilize with nitrogen, you get vines everywhere with zip for fruit.
Hint #2 -- Dry. Just like nitrogen, they'll use the water to roam around....and if you do get any fruit, it'll be tasteless.
Hint #3 -- S+M. Tomatoes thrive on abuse. If you try to be nice to them, you'll get bupkis.
Hint #4 -- Who else is watching your 'maters? We know someone who has a Labrador Retriever that eats 'em off the vine, and we get raided by 'coons and rats if we don't protect 'em.
That said, this was a suckwad year for tomatoes here. It never developed the baking heat that gets you clusters of nom.

I fertilized with fish emulsion, liberally applied cayenne pepper to keep the squirrels away. Second year trying to get the 'big boy' variety going. One plant actually produced a big'un or three that was about 20 ounces and incredibly tasty. Maybe try the smaller varieties?
Posted by: model_1066 at January 04, 2014 04:21 AM (/gJVs)
Fish emulsion is typically around 5-2-2....which is somewhat biased toward the N. And your soil may be naturally too rich -- you can grow great tomatoes in sand or adobe clay, with little useful organic material at all, but they grow like crap in engineered potting soil that is wonderful and nurturing for everything else. Try rotating something else into that spot next year, and putting tomatoes into some godforsaken corner of your garden that accidently got napalmed a couple of years ago and has been fallow ever since.
You should try a mixture of varieties every year, unless blessed with perfect precognition regarding the weather.

You're thinking "The Enlightenment" -- the Renaissance did it's thing. And, true to form, the Enlightenment is being suborned by forces that mock its gains -- where it actually supported reason and individualism, it is being gnawed by the forces of demagoguery and collectivism. It's very similar to how libertarians today are very much like classical liberals, and current progressives keep trying shit that was old and busted in the 40's -- words don't mean what they should.

Carol--
Pneumonia vaccine does not protect against viruses, it protects against strains of pneumococcus, which is a particular type of strep. It does not necessarily keep you from getting pneumonia either, rather its purpose is to keep you from developing a systemic infection (i.e. sepsis) from it. You absolutely could have bacterial pneumonia, which (most likely) would respond to a brief course of azithromycin, unless there is reason for you to have a resistant strain or an unusual bug causing it. The vaccine is supposed to be good for many years, though in the hospital they usually redose anyone over age 65 who has not had it in the past 5 years.
Hope this info helps and that you feel better!

I've seen some of your posts about Paul, his story is heartbreaking. While you are not at any undue risk from visiting him and practicing good handwashing hygeine, you still could have contracted something from him, although incubating from late October until December would be extremely unlikely. The gowns and gloves were most likely for either MRSA or VRE, resistant organisms that are very common in long-term care patients. Most people actually carry MRSA, but infections from it are less common than that might suggest (though I still see a ton in the ER, usually cellulitis or abscess).

Morning all,
Back to Dayshift, after just 23.5 hrs off. Not going to scan through ALL the comments, just checked to see if the trapped rescue ship was mentioned.

essentially the media is cheering the devolution of the American experiment in liberty into the Froggonian dash into egalitarian collectivst proto communism.....
they think the insanity will stop JUST with the smashed right wing they do not know enough history to grasp that it never works and when it fails the state still hungry keeps chewing....
if/when the rule of law is finally rejected either we will destroy their estates or the left will after we're gone....

This grand experiment in freedom and Constitutional government had a pretty good run, far longer than Franklin thought it would. 'Tis a pity that we are in on the end of the experiment. I despise the liberal establishment for sentencing my grandchildren to live in the ruins.

“I am the way into the city of woe,

I am the way to go among the lost.

The highest wisdom, and the primal love.

Abandon all hope you who enter here.”

Good Morning Morons. Today is Saturday, January 04, 2014. On this date in 1846 Samuel Colt sold his first pistol to the US Government. He initially sold 1000 Walker Colts for use in the Mexican-American war. The Walker Colt (or Colt Walker) was the largest and most powerful black powder pistol ever made. They are extremely rare and the last one sold for over $900,000.
One of my favorite movies featured a pair of these guns which were reproductions made by an Italian company under license from Colt. Yes, Jose Wales used two Walker Colts in the movie Outlaw Jose Wales. I found where one of those was auctioned off with the bidding starting between $40,000 and $50,000. Don't know what it actually sold for.
