Overnight Open Thread (3 May 2014)
— CDR M

How about a little history to start of this ONT. Tremendous story of the incredibly stupid one at the Hanoi Hilton. While his first tour may not have started out well, he was incredibly key in getting our POWs back in the end.

Get Off My Lawn

Heh. Kids have it sooooo easy today with the on demand internets versus this bloke whose VCR taught him about sex (the skinamax part had me wondering if Kratos wrote this article). Heck, back in the day you had to work for your pron. Dealing with the scrambled signals by adjusting the tuner on the box or wiggling the connection on the back of the TV just to get a glimpse of a boob or hear some moans. It was either that or the Sears catalog. Those were the dark times.

Spotting Psychopaths

How you can spot one.

At heart, Hare’s test is simple: a list of 20 criteria, each given a score of 0 (if it doesn’t apply to the person), 1 (if it partially applies) or 2 (if it fully applies). The list in full is: glibness and superficial charm, grandiose sense of self-worth, pathological lying, cunning/manipulative, lack of remorse, emotional shallowness, callousness and lack of empathy, unwillingness to accept responsibility for actions, a tendency to boredom, a parasitic lifestyle, a lack of realistic long-term goals, impulsivity, irresponsibility, lack of behavioural control, behavioural problems in early life, juvenile delinquency, criminal versatility, a history of “revocation of conditional release” (ie broken parole), multiple marriages, and promiscuous sexual behaviour. A pure, prototypical psychopath would score 40. A score of 30 or more qualifies for a diagnosis of psychopathy. Hare says: “A friend of mine, a psychiatrist, once said: ‘Bob, when I meet someone who scores 35 or 36, I know these people really are different.’ The ones we consider to be alien are the ones at the upper end.”

F-35D

Cost overruns and budget cuts have forced the F-35D upon the USAF.

Flying Car

Not quite what I had in mind. I would probably call it a dune buggy vice car. French 'Flying Car' undergoes testing for special forces.

Name That Tone

So do you think you have absolute pitch, the ability to name any note you hear? Take the Perfect Pitch Test and find out if you have this rare ability.

Awesome Marine Name

This jarhead needs to get picked up for OCS with a name like this.

Hurricane Season

We've been pretty lucky overall the last 5 years or so but here is one of the forecasts for the upcoming hurricane season.

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers

Theme song sung as a slow jam.

Gas Saving Tips and Myths

Since it looks like gas prices above $3 is here to stay (funny how the MSM ignores gas prices now), it might behoove you to take a look at some gas saving tips and myths.

It depends on how hard the air-conditioning system has to work. When we measured the fuel-economy difference in a  2008 Ford Focus, Honda  Accord, and Subaru Forester, we found that fuel use with the  A/C running went up with higher outside temperatures.  At 55° F, there were negligible differences. But when we measured again on days when the temperature was in the low 70s and high 80s, we got fewer miles per gallon with the  A/C on. In general, expect 1 to 4 mpg less with air conditioning.

76 I don't often anymore post on the ONT, but learned something interesting today.

I found an old VHS tape that I wanted to dupe to DVD. Hadn't done that in a while, and screwed it up. Ruined the tape.

But somehow wound up recording my cable on the VHS tape. Funny, I was under the impression that when the TV signals went to pure digital that recording to VHS was no longer an option.

Well, either I was under the wrong impression or they were lying. Started playing with it, and geez, oddly enough I can record anything off of cable (or switching to antenna) to VHS. Not that I care to, but I just found that interesting.

So was I mis-informed about all this analog and digital stuff after all these years?

I have a 4AM pick up tomorrow and I'm wired so I guess not much sleep for me tonight *** I read quite a bit of it but didn't finish. The writing style jumps back and forth between first and second person and, frankly, I started getting a bit confused.

88 "Saudi Arabia Shows Off Chinese Missiles"

Soon to have Pakistani nuclear warheads attached.

The Saudis have made it clear they'll do this as soon as the Iranians test a weapon, which won't be long. The Saudis can afford it and the Pakistanis are willing sellers.

Another diplomatic triumph for Mr. Ed The Talking Horse, a.k.a. the Secretariat of State, and for the tragicomedically named Ambassador Power.

What pissed ME off today was that idiot Matt Lewis of the Daily Caller (who is apparently now farming out articles on the side because the DC doesn't pay enough), writing in the Daily Telegraph that, quote,

"The Republicans may be the party of Abraham Lincoln -- but they are also, in the minds of voters, the party of men like Donald Sterling and Cliven Bundy."

Ah. Let's sum up. The Republicans are the party of Donald Sterling, a guy whose documented political donations have all been to Democrats. This is obviously some cunning stratagem to disguise his Republican sympathies.

Pick a date.  I'll line up the indoor range at The Arms Room in League City.  Then, after all the guns are safely cleaned n' cased, we'll move the meetup to the Twin Peaks (think upscale Hooters), in Webster, only about 2 miles up the road from The Arms Room.

If Twin Peaks doesn't pan out, I can likely find three or four other suitable venues, some of 'em right on the water at Clear Lake, or the Kemah area.

"Heck, back in the day you had to work for your pron."

Onion on belt time:

There were a couple of years there that early adopters were using the first gen of home TV repeaters. Hook one TV to the cable or VCR, then broadcast the signal throughout the house to the other TVs.

However, since there were a limited number of channels to send the signal over in the analog days, your neighbors could pick up the signal. With no scrambling.

So, free porn.  Plus you get to know what kind of stuff the folks across the street are into, especially when they fast forward the tape to the parts they like.

Boulder Hobo.

In this case, location, location, location.

We don't want Morons making 30 mile trips between the range and the meetup.

And, staying out of Houston proper is it's own reward.  On that topic, if the South East side o' town isn't working, I can probably get us a hookup at AM 740's radio talk host Michael Berry's "Redneck Country Club"....but, that one will come with an admission fee....it's a private membership club, with all that entails.

My suggested location at Twin Peaks.....is surrounded by reasonable (not downtown, upscale palatial) hotels.  Galveston Bay is only three to four miles away.  Excellent restaurants abound.  Believe me, the area is the right pick, and if you feel that strongly, I can find another in the same zone.

I'll start my in person research, tomorrow.  This ought to happen, so I'll help get it started.

Back in '07 I hooked the cable from the wall into my tv and let the QAM tuner built into it do a full scan for available channels.  I was able to pull up other people's rentals and watch movies free of charge.  It worked for awhile but soon the cable companies caught wind and scrambled a lot more stuff.  Can't get too many channels straight out of the wall anymore without a box.

Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers theme song? Cool! Really, I think I watched every Rescue Rangers episode. It was better than those Chipmunks v Donald cartoons of my youth. ... There was a fly character, right? That was a little disturbing. If you had kids of a certain age, and you monitored their Video Intake, you know all about the Ninja Turtles and Rescue Rangers and, oh, let's see, yeah, Duck Tales! The first seasons, largely based on the Carl Barks comic book stories, that was excellent stuff. Bakshi's Mighty Mouse, shallow and frenetic, was still one of his best efforts. Destroyed by insane hallucinating religious moralizers. Then there was the smarminess of Pee Wee's Playhouse. I enjoy watching them now, with my kids all grown up. (Whoa, Miss Yvonne!!!!!!111!!!!! Yow, Pool Guy!!!!) But it was still a great, endearing, hilarious, manic series. The King of Cartoooons! The closing music can still get me misty-eyed for days shared watching with my kids. As long as I don't think about reuben it in adult movie theaters. (Yes, YSWIDT.) I'm an old comics & animation & kids show fan from when I was the age my kids were then. I was awfully glad that their era was filled with some good Saturday Morning fare, because, after all, I had to watch it. There were things we didn't see because Dad. We vidtaped to a) watch shows that were broadcast at the same time and even better b) as I taught the kids, by FF'ing through the repeats of commercials (you gotta watch 'em the first time, at least, y'know, especially 'round Christmas), they could almost watch three half-hour cartoon shows in the time of two. Also, on our own time. Ah, the pre-Net tape-delay struggles. Am I rambling? It's because of the (checks label) year. Good evening, folks. It's a great big universe, and we're all really groovy. We're like flashes on the screen just like a 3-D color movie. We're here with smiling faces. Saturday at Ace's. It's a big Universe and it's GOD'S. Glad he Shares.

LOL. You mean the newspaper in Airplane!

The picture of the boy in the spinning newspaper that has the headline, "Boy Trapped In Refrigerator Eats Own Foot", is Billy Koch, the grandson of producer Howard W. Koch. His grandfather called him up one day and asked him for a photo of himself, so Billy grabbed his second grade school photo. It was only after the film came out that he found out why his grandfather wanted the photo.

For those of you who have not enjoyed the privilege of life in the People's Soviet Socialist Republic of Commiefornia, let me note that state-mandated custom gasoline blending has been one of the biggest single factors in our state's consistently sky-high gasoline prices.

Only the small number of refineries remaining in CA produce these blends, which means that we can't import fuel from other states, which means PAIN AT THE PUMP ELEVENTY for Commiefornia drivers, or it would mean that if we weren't a one-party Democratic state where such things are discreetly ignored by the media.

Such custom gasoline blends have never been proven to reduce smog, and may actually, net-net, increase it.

But it's all part of the war on cars. Society will not be perfected until all of you disgusting bitter-clinger proles have been forced onto mass transit due to skyrocketing costs of car ownership and operation.

Your Betters, of course, will continue to have cars of their own, subsidized ones, as they have socially important responsibilities.

395 A group of 11 terrorists with links to Al Qaeda were yesterday being interrogated on whether they are behind the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The suspects were arrested in the capital Kuala Lumpur and in the state of Kedah last week and are members of a violent new terror group said to be planning bomb attacks in Muslim countries.

The interrogations come after international investigators, including the FBI and MI6, asked for the militants, whose ages range from 22 to 55 and include students, odd-job workers, a young widow and business professionals, to be questioned intensively about Flight MH370. Posted by: Thunderb

It's bad enough to shoulder those risks while servng in the ranks of the military, but the military are better protected and better compensated for dangerous duty than are the diplomatic corps.

I'm not saying that they wouldn't prefer to cover it up forever....I'm saying that having the current "drip....drip....drip...." carry over into their Administration will make them look as bad as Barky. I can well understand why someone might want to actually continue Barky's policies -- the political life is very attractive to malignant narcissists -- but why they would want to claim to continue his policies, or continue his lies about his policies, is another story. I would think that the easiest way to start covering your own scandals is to spill the beans on all of Barky's -- the resultant explosion of crap gives you all kind of cover to do anything you please.

Yeah....that exact quote got a bit scrambled, so I responded to what I thought he meant @473. Yes, I can see why a politician might desire to trample the Constitution like Barky does; no, I don't think that means he goes out and says, "Barky was right to trample the Constitution like that."

I really would prefer it if people viewed working in Washington DC as a death sentence rather than a turn at the public trough. Then there's a script out there that allows you to select people on these types of blogs and hide their posts based on their name's hash.

It's a browser add-in that I got from Merovign. What it does it gives everyone their own banhammer that only applies to themselves -- they can blank posts from specific people (by hash), but only on their browser. It is extremely useful for people who are rude, repetitious, tiresome, and personally vicious in a way that the greater blog wouldn't necessarily banhammer timely (if, for instance, A kept bugging B about B's failed relationship and regular attendance of the ONT -- B might very quickly get to the point where it might be better if A got blanked rather than discuss anything about the situation.)

At the time, the Horde was being extensively trolled by such assholes -- coming in to mine information by pretending to be friendly, then randomly associating anything they'd learned about a person with anything to be criticized about that person. I saw it happen to a few people and got the tool. Then, as soon as I recognized the pattern, I blanked 'em. I believe that two of them were subsequently banned.

Well, it seems like that sort of troll isn't in vogue so much any more, and now it only seems to cause comments from Morons in Good Standing about "WTF is that THANG on the end of your quote, there?" But I haven't gotten around to turning it off and packing it away.

For myself, I'm actually coming from this almost 180 degrees from the "gay marriage" advocates -- I believe that all government recognition of marriage is perverse, wrong, sinful, unwise, hurtful, unconstitutional, and immoral.....but I would have "jumped the broom" or "plighted my troth" in a purely religious ceremony years ago, were I a church-attending type. Posted by: cthulhu at May 04, 2014 03:44 AM (T1005) You're a good man, Charlie Brown Cooth. You've certainly been clear before about your feelings on state vs. private marriage. Politically, I'm not certain it's feasible to get the state out of marriage entirely, or that it would be necessarily advisable. IMO, from the government's perspective it should treat marriage primarily as a contract for property rights/succession. It is in the government's interest to encourage marriage, at least healthy marriages, for the purpose of raising children who go on to be better and more productive citizens on average than those of single or even co-habitating but unmarried parents, but I fear that incentivizing marriage would primarily lead to more bad marriages. The entirely private definition of marriage just seems so...weird. For the individuals involved, yes, I would hope the private concerns would be the driving force. But from a civil/society standpoint, marriage represents a fusing of economic units and a new division of labor that is beneficial and has been regulated since Hammurabi, AFAIK. Should the civil elements be codified, I don't know--if I say yes, I'm saying so because I want protection of traditional marriage and of religion from gay activists. I guess what I'd agree to is civil unions as a legal matter for all (since I'm afraid the gay marriage boat has sailed in all its fabulous glory, though I still will vote against if I have the option), and let marriage be an entirely private matter. The gut part of me wants marriage as it has been, with civil unions for gays, but my brain rebels against "separate but equal" after the evils that philosophy has caused historically.

I've been in Silicon Valley for about a quarter century, and every so often there is a buzzword that is going to forever vanquish the problem of making stuff that is good. We've seen ISO, and TQM, and Six Sigma, and -- well, y'all can generate a list as well as I can.

Having seen a few, I've had the opportunity to notice patterns. For instance, a common thread among these systems is that you need to do the right thing consistently. Another common thread is that you have to demand that the people who provide you with products or services give you good stuff.....as defined by the buzzword du jour.

So, if you're an ISO shop -- you need to continually nag your suppliers to adopt ISO. Which ends the day after you get a new VP and sign on to the cult of TQM -- because then, you'll need to nag them just as hard to adopt TQM.....which will last until your customers demand that you convert to Six Sigma or die by the sword.

And the thing that always struck me as funny about that "make your suppliers do XXXX" thing is that every supply chain starts out as dirt. Let's say that you're talking fiberoptic cables. Those are created in towers by slowly melting big blocks of ultra-pure glass and teasing it away to the proper thickness before cooling it. The ultra-pure glass is made in huge furnaces by repeatedly settling out, floating off, filtering out, or chemically neutralizing impurities from blocks of not-so-pure glass. That not-so pure glass is made by melting sand....which is dug out of the earth by a guy who'd tell the TQM asshole exactly where his shovel was about to get shoved and how far.

Our own Alberta Oil Peon was relating some "boots on the ground" stories of posting mineral claims notices on remote properties. I suspect he'd have greeted some missionary from the Great Church of Six Sigma with all due respect while he was doing so.

You trace everything far enough back, and there is a dirty guy in uncomfortable, dangerous circumstances prying something out of the ground. And all the Pajama-boy theorists and quality numbnuts in the world will never change this.

580 566 You're a good man, Charlie Brown Cooth.

The Code of Hammurabi -- http://tinyurl.com/q2mkl7x -- actually has very little about marriage itself, but quite a bit about property rights surrounding marriage.....just as an aside.

Let's start with one small issue -- inheritance. Under different regimes, at different times, in different places, state inheritance rules have gone from primogeniture (eldest son gets it all), to all children inherit equally -- with steps for males to inherit 1 share and females to inherit 1/2; males to inherit the business and females to inherit the home; males to inherit equally, married females to inherit nothing....there have been quite a few of such schemes. Which one should be embedded in the law?

Should that be a Federal law or a state law?  What if the parents to the heir belong to a religious tradition that would divide the inheritance differently -- would such laws to the contrary be "respecting an establishment of religion"?

And that's just one tiny, dusty corner of this mess.

Now, I could actually support a reporting requirement -- imagine, if you would, a 32-page form that says "Jack Jones and Tina Smith declare" at the top. Around page 16, it has a section for "children's inheritance" with radio buttons for "under will" or "by custom" -- and listing "by custom" options.

The problem is that the government doesn't have an index as to what "marriage" means, so it's referenced a zillion times in a zillion different places and it's assumed to be a zillion completely unrelated things, 90% of which are not within the government's purview in the first place. It really needs a thorough cleanup

Everyone thinks the train-wreck is the last bump. The train-wreck is going to be when you see tax returns that say, "drop your drawers, disclose your entire health history to the same IRS that screws over organizations with "freedom" in their name, and bend over the desk, or pay $95 of your refund (if any) to tell us 'fuck off'."

Posted by: Conservative Crank at May 04, 2014 01:04 AM (d7H2D)

590 Andrew Jackson, 1832:

"It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes. Distinctions in society will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of education, or of wealth can not be produced by human institutions. In the full enjoyment of the gifts of Heaven and the fruits of superior industry, economy, and virtue, every man is equally entitled to protection by law; but when the laws undertake to add to these natural and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles, gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the potent more powerful, the humble members of society-the farmers, mechanics, and laborers-who have neither the time nor the means of securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the injustice of their Government. There are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine itself to equal protection, and, as Heaven does its rains, shower its favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and the poor, it would be an unqualified blessing. In the act before me there seems to be a wide and unnecessary departure from these just principles.

Nor is our Government to be maintained or our Union preserved by invasions of the rights and powers of the several States. In thus attempting to make our General Government strong we make it weak. Its true strength consists in leaving individuals and States as much as possible to themselves-in making itself felt, not in its power, but in its beneficence; not in its control, but in its protection; not in binding the States more closely to the center, but leaving each to move unobstructed in its proper orbit.

Experience should teach us wisdom. Most of the difficulties our Government now encounters and most of the dangers which impend over our Union have sprung from an abandonment of the legitimate objects of Government by our national legislation, and the adoption of such principles as are embodied in this act. Many of our rich men have not been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought us to make them richer by act of Congress. By attempting to gratify their desires we have in the results of our legislation arrayed section against section, interest against interest, and man against man, in a fearful commotion which threatens to shake the foundations of our Union. It is time to pause in our career to review our principles, and if possible revive that devoted patriotism and spirit of compromise which distinguished the sages of the Revolution and the fathers of our Union. If we can not at once, in justice to interests vested under improvident legislation, make our Government what it ought to be, we can at least take a stand against all new grants of monopolies and exclusive privileges, against any prostitution of our Government to the advancement of the few at the expense of the many, and in favor of compromise and gradual reform in our code of laws and system of political economy.

I have now done my duty to my country. If sustained by my fellow citizens, I shall be grateful and happy; if not, I shall find in the motives which impel me ample grounds for contentment and peace. In the difficulties which surround us and the dangers which threaten our institutions there is cause for neither dismay nor alarm. For relief and deliverance let us firmly rely on that kind Providence which I am sure watches with peculiar care over the destinies of our Republic, and on the intelligence and wisdom of our countrymen. Through His abundant goodness and heir patriotic devotion our liberty and Union will be preserved."

647 @640 I am lazy. If you said PHI, I would know or if you said Philly. Charlotte is a lot of letters, ha ha.

648 rickl at May 04, 2014 08:25 AM (sdi6R) Come on out to PHX sometime!

Posted by: Old Dog at May 04, 2014 04:28 AM (tQYJH)

649 Anyway, I was reading about the Bank War from cthulhu's link above and this sentence jumped out at me: Overall, the pro-Bank analysis tended to soberly enumerate JacksonÂ’s failures, lacking the vigor of the Democratic Party press. That sure sounds familiar...

650 But to get to me you have to go to TUS!

651 You guys break a 100 yet Old Dog?

Posted by: Infidel at May 04, 2014 04:31 AM (pTP6v)

652 @642 I bet it's still cold in GJT. If you were in CLT you could take a non stop flight to about 20 nice Caribbean destinations and not have to go through SLC or the ATL. Probably get a cheap flight too and not have to put up with Delta.

653 Not quite yet up in PHX. This may be the latest year in a long time. I am fortunate to live down in the SE corner at about 5000 Ft. so 90 is a big deal for us and not yet for us either!

654 Seriously, I can't see the morning thread. What can the problem be? My connection seems no worse than usual, the browser seems to be working, the ONT refreshes. What could it be?

655 Yes, if I could sell the house.  Maybe out of a job by July.  Although, You can smoke in the SLC airport and ALT has that nice Bud bar where you can smoke and drink on the Delta wing.

How about 108. Did you measure that? There is no amount of gas saved that could convince me to turn off the AC in an Arkansas summer.

658 @651 I believe CLT still has a smoking lounge. It's next to the Krispy Kreme doughnut shop. I am not making that up.

659 108?  And humidity.  yikes.

667 Psychopath.  Heh.  I was married to one.  No criminal past -- at least not that I knew of -- but she fit a lot of the other symptoms/traits.

Or maybe "toxic narcissist."  Either way, she scares me.

Fortunately she's not so hot any more, at 51.  But I'll bet she can still manipulate people.

668 Probably mentioned already, but I just read that Boner picked Trey Gowdy to head the Benghazi Select Committee. Good news, indeed.
