Hope you feel better soon, Mætenloch!
I actually like these picture-collage-clinky threads, a lot...and I bet they took some work to create them...so don't apologize for them.

Rick Perry was on Cavuto this afternoon...looking good and making lots of sense.
Hannity is getting ready to replay it, right now, if you want to see it.
Perry was in NY today, to debate 'job creation' with Coumo.
I think Coumo chickened out, though.

76 Rick Perry was on Cavuto this afternoon...looking good and making lots of sense.
Great. Is it true about him hiring former McCain campaign staff & other totally unacceptable advisers? I don't remember where I read it, I'm in a fucking pollen haze. Kill. Me. Now.

Eh, I doubt that's true, bebe.
I read a blurb a couple of weeks back, that he'd hired some of Newt's campaign staff.
This early on we have to take these stories with a grain of salt.
I know exactly what you mean about "being in a pollen haze"...I have been too.
In fact, the throbbing in my head is coming back right now.

I've tried all sorts of tomatoes, and the only ones I didn't like as much were the runny ones. Anything that has a lot of pulp works well -- you can even do cherry tomatoes in it.

What you're really mad at isn't God, it's YOUR idea of God. (or perhaps what you've been taught/learned).
Many religions do not teach the concept of God very well.
Faith is all very well but some of us have trouble with the idea of a just and righteous God allowing things to happen to people (and to ourselves) that seem so unfair and so outright wrong that we have trouble accepting that what happens is God's will.
After you've lived and experienced many different situations (which may or may not happen depending on how far you travel and how open to new experiences you are) you will come to understand that we cannot see to the extent that God does. We also do not understand or perceive the outcomes that are to come to pass.
There are many situations where ugly things have to happen for beautiful things to happen. It can also be reversed. What looks like the best thing to happen will actually (in the long run) result in more misery and pain than what would seem possible.
You cannot begin to understand God so how can you be angry with God?
This is where faith comes in. After you accept that God will do what God will do and to endure those bad times you must have faith that there are reasons for those bad times to happen and if you are lucky and persevere perhaps there will be good times to enjoy also.
No life is completely wasted and no life is fully utilized except those few who give themselves wholly over to God and God's purposes. Acceptance is the beginning of understanding and to enduring what may seem unendurable.
Be faithful, be strong, be righteous and be merciful and your life will be better for it.

There has to be a pretty good volume of ground level air in the wheelwell at the start, and I'll assume the doors seal pretty well with the gear up. He's Somali, therefore probably skinny, so his core temp probably dropped pretty fast. There have been a number of cases of drowned children in icy cold water that have been revived after 30 minutes or more, usually without brain damage.
In fact, hospitals are starting to use chilled patient techniques for extended operations to take advantage of this very same phenomenon.
So it's quite possible he survived; whether he's a veggie or not they haven't said that I've seen.

What's so hard about being a good neighbor and controlling the amount of time your barking dog can bother people? It starts, bring it inside. How hard is that? His dog isn't that barky, the lots in his neighborhood are good-sized, and -- honest to God, I watched this myself in stunned disbelief -- he has the kind of neighbor that would blow the leaves off his yard, then carefully blow them across the street so that they'd be in the road of his across-the-street neighbor.

This saint described each human as a pane of glass. A saint's pane is turned more fully towards the light of G_d, hence the saint can see more clearly the little smudges. Whereas a sinner's pane is turned more away from the light and hence the sinner does not realize the smudges.

You clearly have some strong and convincing feelings about the subject and I was not trying to be critical but to see if I could point you in a different direction.
Being angry at God is like be mad at the dirt. The weather is weather and God is God.
We have little to say or ability to influence the composition of the Earth. Likewise we have even less influence with God.
We are taught to pray to God because prayer can sooth the heart and focus the mind. But prayer is not a magic spell or an order form. Prayer is meant to focus our attention on those things that we would want to happen or to aid those we love.
And as it has been said, sometimes the answer to our prayers is; NO.
As I said above we can never know the reasons behind Gods actions. Feel free to say whatever you wish. Perhaps talking about it will help you understand what you feel and cause you to reevaluate your judgment. Whatever you wish.

I must have attended an easy dozen or so people's/freind's funerals over the years that killed themselves. 2 of them were brothers that killed themselves years apart from each other. Another shot himself in the head with a .22 while on the phone with his sister who had to hear him suddenly change his mind as he was dying. Another few hung or gassed themselves over chicks, and on and on. I'm fucking numb to it, just seen too much of it. Every one left a fucking mess in their wake.

There are many paths to get there, and some of them are neither logical, nor a disease, but more like a cancer of thought -- where the mechanisms that normally keep things going are subtly altered to where feedback loop stops keeping you on an even keel, and -- instead -- they drag you slowly away from light, hope, friends, and the future. But it's still horribly recognizable as the same mental feedback loop that everyone has -- just like cancer cells are still mostly the patient's human cells, with normal human-cell plumbing and wiring, with just the subtle twist of continually demanding more resources.
I believe that the saying "There, but for the Grace of God, go I" applies.

I'll second that. I wish I could get into Ace's time machine & go back to shake some sense into a couple friends...
I am tired of dealing with it. Twice in the last two years, I've been a little too close to it. First, no indictation whatsoever.
This last time, i was just too fucking close, and it hit hard. Hard. Brother Cavil, and I think, Bebe's are both (not) talking about the same friend of ours. Posted by: shredded chi at April 23, 2014 11:59 PM (HXQvh) Hide posts from (HXQvh)

Just to throw a marker down:
I've been privately amazed at the proportion of the Horde who admit to carrying around depression, or at least having done so at some point in their lives. Not least the Boss Ewok.
But, perhaps unsurprising. In light of research showing that depressives actually tend to have the most accurate perception of what's going on in the real world. The mass of non-depressive humanity see the world through a gauzy veil of self-protective illusions and deceptions.
When depression reaches truly grand mal stages, however, individuals become incapable of accurately gauging the effect on the larger world of their own actions. A truly badly off depressive individual will actually figure their suicide to be a net positive and helpful thing for their loved ones.
In that circumstance, for a depressive, it's inaccurate to speak of them as being an asshole who doesn't care about the loss of their person hurting their family.
Just as though a blind person not being able to see their family's faces is not being an asshole, or a deaf person being unable to hear their voices is not being an asshole. It's a physiological condition beyond conscious correction.

Even with the best of care, it takes its toll and claims its prey. And for the rest of us, it hurts like hell. But I can't blame a sick man for dying from his disease. Even this way. Probably what makes it harder.

The previous one was very close. I called a friend who actually came on that night to tell her story of finding her own father after he killed himself when she was 12 years old. She laid it all out about how it haunted her for years, and how it tormented her thinking how could he leave her, and etc etc. She painted a pretty clear picture of what the daughter would go through had he gone through with it. In the end it happened anyway, it does eventually take it's toll.

I'll tell you what is a complete pain in the ass except using a vacuum -- when camellias dump their spent blossoms and stuff into a bed of baby's tears. You can root around forever with your hands and you'll likely only find stuff after it's half-rotted and slimy, rakes tear everything up, using a leafblower only pushes stuff in deeper.....

Still, it's odd that some of that's very similar to what was said by the Duck Dynasty guy.
And frankly, I don't believe anything the NYT has to say. I believe they would lie and distort what someone said without a problem with it at all.
So either way. No one who reads that that believes it is his friend anyway and anyone who is a friend understands what he probably meant.
And what he said that might be offensive has nothing to do with what the government tried to do.
Too much pussy footing around. Too much worrying about what some twit in San Jose is going to think.
I'm tired of people being verbally crucified and vilified for being politically incorrect. I'm tired of everyone having to be oh so careful of what they say in case it might get taken the wrong way and taint "our side".
Anyone who's going to be that judgmental wouldn't be on "our side" anyway.

Not really seriously but enough to contemplate how I would go about it.
The thing that has kept me from it was a comment by a guy in the '60's who told me that if I kept my attitude, I was going to commit suicide before I was 40.
Now I didn't change my attitude (asshole with pretentions of smarm) but I did remember the comment and whenever I'd think about suicide I always came down on the side of "I'm not gonna let that bastard be right".
So even though I'm way beyond 40, I'm still not gonna let that bastard be right.

Actually, the medium sword (falchiona, falchion, sabre etc) is actually the most used and favored edged weapon in all of history.
The reason they know this is because it is almost impossible to find examples from ancient times. They have sculptures and paintings that depict them but no examples. Plenty of examples of the big swords and such but it's assumed that because the shorter swords were so versatile, so useful, so valued that they were used until they wore out.
Thus no examples in graves, tombs, barrows, etc. and few examples in old battle fields and such.
I think there's few examples extant of the Roman Spatha for the same reasons.
So suck it Glamdring, Anduril, Narsil et al. The man with the medium sized sword will kick your ass. (mainly because you're outnumbered you dumbass and the fucking swords too heavy)

Almost as good as having the CA authorities roaming around with infrared scopes to detect and apprehend people guilty of the heinous crime of... building fires in their fireplaces.
I remember an environmentalist bumper sticker common in NorCal in the 1970s: "Split wood, not atoms."
Well, now you can split as much wood as you want, but if you dare burn so much as a twig worth of it contrary to official dictates, expect for the planetary purity police to be knocking on your door in the name of the greater good.

I recall an observation by someone who had spent a few months plumbing the lowest depths one can reach in frank clinical depression.
He said that he was comfortably prepared for death, and contemplating suicide constantly, and would have done so, except that volitional action to do that or anything else was too enormous a burden.
Instead, he simply lay there in bed completely immobile, day after day, in his own body wastes. Waiting and wishing to die of dehydration.
It's a really tough thing to communicate. Not to mention that the majority of the depressives who have submerged that far in the disease don't survive, and hence never come back to the surface to relate their experience.

There's a woman I've known for twenty years now, who at the time I first met her was a really intensive exercise addict, to the point where she had burned off all her subcutaneous fat as fuel for running and swimming, and attained a pure gaunt angularity.
Great muscular definition, to be sure. Just not that feminine to my eye.
Fast forward a few years. Desk job, regular travel, expense account meals, had to slack off on the marathoning and the competitive swimming. Her healthy core musculature was still there, but the softer layer above it had come back, and I thought she looked infinitely the better for that.
And, come to think of it, felt better too when hugged. Less skeletal.

I hope I never have to test this, but I'd like to ask a suicidal person, "How much do you hate me?"
Even for a total stranger - we create connections. And suicide traumatizes all those left behind. It's never just one's own self. "No one cares if you live or die" is a damn lie. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at April 24, 2014 12:38 AM (M9BzG) Hide posts from (M9BzG)
"Mad Cow disease" -- aka "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy" or BSE -- is an extremely dangerous disease that reduces the brain to mush before killing the animal. Interestingly, the infectious agent is a misfolded protein that can cause a chain-reaction of other protein misfoldings.
This is like saying that a misfolded napkin could cause a chain-reaction of napkin misfoldings that could clog the pass-through from the kitchen and ultimately cause a restaurant to fail. There are thousands of different proteins in a cow's body, and probably millions of instances of proteins. The "napkin" protein is normally water-soluble and present in normal cells and is thought to work in transmembrane transport or signaling -- the misfolded type is relatively insoluble in water and tends to clump. Because it's a useful protein, cells will -- as part of their fundamental programming -- produce it naturally as part of their normal function.
Humans, BTW, have he same protein and can get the same disease -- though it's called variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease ("vCJD") in humans.
There are many paths that lead to suicide, but one of the most insidious is for the normal functioning of a healthy brain to be turned against the continued existence of the entity. Nobility, honor, love, and reason still work in a perverse way, but it becomes an expression of noble duty to excise oneself from all that one values. That this can easily be mistaken for "normal" is quite natural....because all but the misfolded protein are behaving normally.
But I will also say, as I said to Joffen's sister......do not try to "get inside the mind" of a person who kills themself -- even if you're trying to find what went wrong and keep to the right -- because there is a real danger that you might succeed just as you're swinging from a rope.
Can we have a round of drinks for missing friends and get the hell off this topic? Sure, there's a lot to be said -- it's the nature of mankind -- but there's times and places.......and durations.

True story. I recently put on quite a bit of weight. (i'm not fat, yet , but I am quite a bit more curvy than I used to be). And this is the first time in a while I have not been obsessed about my weight. (i've always liked my body. I just always used to talk and think about my weight.) I'm actually thinking of staying at this weight. Isn't that funny?

Jack in the Box
Blazing Chicken Sandwich
F- / Incomplete / Should be a Felony
If you are a slug, snail or other insect susceptible to salt, this sandwich may be 'blazing.' If you are not, you will be severely, severely disappointed. It's the equivalent of a KFC fried chicken sandwich with pickled jalapenos.
It claims to have "Ghost Pepper Ranch sauce." Heat-heads might be lead to think they mean Bhut Jolokia pepper, but the marketing geniuses at Jack Off in the Box really meant 'no pepper what-so-ever.' HAH-HAH, jokes on you, Mr. Customer! < SQUIRT! >
F the sandwich, F Jack, and F everyone involved with the company. The company should be sued and people should be in jail.

Just in the last day, I recollect having seen two women who were definitely towards the heavier end of the spectrum. But who presented very differently.
The first one gave the distinct impression of too much packed onto her frame, and laboring with it. Not enough cardiovascular capacity to move herself in a sprightly way. Bones bending under the stress. Slow to climb steps. An awkward gait. Visibly not happy.
Whereas the second one looked comfortable with herself, pleased with her life, and not overburdened. Laughing, pleasant demeanor. Moved like a dancer despite her size. She probably could have danced up a flight of steps on her toes while smiling and not getting out of breath.
To what extent this difference might have been genetic, ethnic, behavioral, nutritional, psychological, or medical was beyond my ability to suss out on such a cursory acquaintance. But the disparity was striking.

For all the time guys look at pictures, attitude matters a great deal. And, just for a reality check, ask a guy who is checking out the firehose of pussy on the internet why he just closed a page instead of going for a close-up, and you'll often hear, "with that expression? No, thanks."
If you don't have anything else to talk about, talk skinny and fit. If you've got a real person -- talk about how often you want to snuggle, when you look and her and you know you're both thinking mischief, when you'll do a little extra for her smile or she'll do a little extra for yours.....

Interesting that you should say that.
The woman who I thought carried herself well was definitively black.
The other woman, who did not seem at all comfortable at her current size, was of what I would term "indeterminate ethnicity".
That is a steadily growing category in the SF Bay Area.
A Filipino guy I met here shook his head ruefully and said he had walked up to what he figured for sure was a fellow pinoy, and said hello in Tagalog, and gotten a very hostile stare in response. Straight up Mexican and not happy to be taken for anything other than that.

All right then, aussie, a question for you about how things are in Oz:
I have heard many horror stories about how the greeniacs have forced various silly measures upon ordinary Australians in the last few years.
The one which left me shaking my head in amazement was that rural homeowners had even been forbidden to perform cutbacks of plant growth around their properties for fire safety. (Not that Australia ever has wildfires. Heavens no.)
Has the recent change of government improved that situation at all?

Hi, and unfortunately the greenies have infiltrated local government very successfully
The worst of the greenie inflicted horror stories - see the Victorian bushfires in 2009 (can't link due to only having cardboard membership here)
173 people died - some of them because of the greenie policies such as not reducing undergrowth, people not allowed to remove trees from around their homes etc
Even though we have a conservative Federal Government, greenies abound at a local level

That reminded me of a certain subset of songs where "they're cool/they're songs/I like" morphs into a queasy ickiness. Just to get things off on the right foot, how 'bout Stephen Stills' "Love the One You're With" and John Lennon's "Imagine". The first is a cynical trashing of anything beyond the immediate moment's pleasure, and the second would be recognized by Dante as Hell.

I might otherwise go, "l'chaim" -- which, in Hebrew, means "to life" and is another popular toast [when drinking Manischewitz?]. Or "skaal" -- which is often equated with "slainte", but actually is a non-denominational word meaning "toast" without especial reference to whether it is to "life" or "health" or anything else, favored by Skandis.

I'm not Italian by any stretch of the imagination (helpful hint: to me, paprika is a food group), but I can cook a mean eggplant parm. I also make babaganouj. I've made a stir-fry with sliced pork and eggplant in an orange/hoi-sin sauce. Once I did Japanese eggplant sliced in half lengthwise, made slits into the flesh, placed them cut side down on a microwave save baking dish, put in enough soy to cover about halfway up, tossed in some minced garlic and ginger and nuked for about 20 minutes or so until done. Was quite impressed with that recipe (which came from a veggie cookbook).
Doing eggplant right (read: tasty) is not just for Italians. Posted by: RickZ at April 24, 2014 03:29 AM (HWCZo) Hide posts from (HWCZo)
This is a very good point, and I should have been more general. My thesis was "have eggplant prepared by someone who knows how to make it delicious before you have it prepared by someone who doesn't understand it and will ruin it for you forever." I over-focused on Italian, thinking of the many delicious eggplant dishes there................

Being "silly", I did actually eat Italian Eggplant Lasagne when I was about ten.
My babysitter's family was First Generation Italian.
When I showed up to see if "Carbone" wanted to play basketball, I got invited to stay for dinner.
It was delicious, but I'll be "afraid" of eggplant, as your description warns ...lol. Not for nuthin', but "soggy eggplant" eats all sorts of ASS.
Ms. Carbone made Eggplant Lasagne like a champ.

The shooting at Cure International Hospital in the western part of the Afghan capital was the latest attack on foreign civilians in the city this year.

That's why I stay off it. God knows I feel lousy enough already.
OK, no morning thread yet, and I've got to go. So:
Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Here are a couple of quick stories:
After Psycho was released in 1960, director Alfred Hitchcock got a letter from a disgruntled moviegoer. After seeing Janet Leigh butchered in the shower, he wrote, his wife had been afraid to shower or bathe. What, he demanded, did the director suggest they do?
“Sir,” Hitch wrote back, “have you ever considered taking your wife to the dry cleaner?”
In his funny and charming 1959 autobiography Groucho and Me, the great Groucho Marx tells of the time he was walking down State Street in Chicago when a middle-aged couple came up and began circling him, going around two or three times and inspecting him up and down. At last, the wife stammered, “You’re – you’re him, aren’t you? You’re Groucho?” Marx nodded. Then she touched him shyly on the arm.
“Please don’t die,” she smiled. “Just keep on living.”
And thatÂ’s it for me today, I think.
