Sonny Bunch on Rights vs. Principles
In which he responds to this XKCD comic among other things:
What I am saying is that your politicization of every facet of the public sphere makes you kind of a dick and leads to a coarsening of society. And, as Bath notes, it shows that your commitment to the liberal order-to the marketplace of ideas, to very basic pillars of civilization on which our silly little band of super-smart apes relies-is tenuous, at best.
Those who live the politicized life want us to treat freedom of speech as something to be tolerated legally and worked around socially rather than a fundamental belief. This isn't to say every fringe belief should be indulged-9/11 was not an inside job; blacks were not better off as chattel-but on issues where there is legitimate debate and a sizable portion of the populace on either side of the argument? Maybe you should think twice before you try to destroy someone's livelihood. As a society we're better off not waging perpetual war against everyone with whom we disagree.
The Most Ancient Human Mental Virus
Antisemitism is not a sign, a symbol, a bullet or a gas. It is a Virus. It is the oldest known virus to infest the human soul. In those infected, the virus is clever enough to mask it's existence by renaming itself as "anti-Zionism." Through the renaming of this ancient disease as a "political problem," infected souls can transmit the virus to their friends, families. They can spread their disease at their schools and in their their community, church, or nation. The virus is also transmitted by exchanging infected fantasies with infected ideologues. By changing it's name the disease made it possible for many to deny that they have contracted the virus, and that their souls are chancre-ridden and rotting. This facilitates the current outbreak.
Yes, antisemitism is a clever virus and this shape-shifting is one of its oldest methods of perpetuating itself. Like other viruses currently feasting on humans, this one always has a pleasure principle associated with it. It feels good to get it and we live in the plague years of "If it feels good, do it." Those whose moral immune systems have been previously compromised by other pleasure-born diseases have souls which are particularly susceptible to this virus.
As noted above, in the recent past, it has been shown that large doses of steel and fire can eradicate the virus in some populations, but only for a time. A cure is promised, but seems to be always delayed. The only measures that work are, at best, prophylactic. Another strategy is strict monitoring to prevent the spread of the virus. This seemed to be holding the virus at bay for decades. Lately, however, this method has broken down. The virus, like terrorism, has recently been able to piggy-back on the world-circling data-stream, and infect individuals and groups previously deemed immune. The current strain has indeed become so virulent that large blocks of Jewish people, in Europe, America and even Israel, have become infested.
...Since the virus has been present in human hosts for well over 4,000 years, hopes for eradication in our lifetime are slim. Hopes for eradication in the future are better in civilized countries if, and only if, members of the generations now living and infected with the virus become dedicated to not passing it on to future generations. The virus is found nowhere else in nature except within the human host. If it is denied transmission to the young, it can be eliminated from the world in three generations. If... but only if.
From the documentary Shoah Part 4. It runs about 45 minutes.
On Being a Hero in WWII Poland
Not to minimize the accomplishments of the Danes or the Bulgarians, but to be a hero in Poland was a lot more meaningful than to be one in Denmark or Bulgaria-or even, as it turns out, in Germany. Why? Because Poland was the only Nazi-occupied country in which helping Jews would officially get you the death penalty. Here are the horrific facts (read them and ask yourself if you would have been as brave as the many Poles who did shelter and save Jews):
Poland was the only place where German law rendered any assistance to Jews punishable by death. That punishment was severe and collective: It was meted out not only to the rescuer but also to his entire family and to anyone else who knew about such activities and did not report them. Almost 1,000 Poles were killed this way, including entire families whose children were not spared.
Marxist Revolution Delayed Due to Copyright, Property Rights
Duke's 'You Don't Say' Campaign Tells You What to Say
Because if you take away words, then human nature will be fundamentally transformed.
In another effort by the groups, they painted a local bridge urging people not to say things like "That's retarded" or that they were "raped" by something inanimate like a test:
The campaign tackles the use of words like "pussy," "fag," "man up" or "bitch" as slang terms.
Well I'm not sure this would work for everyone but then I've never tried this particular technique.
A practitioner, nay, an artist, of the Kindly Brontosaurus method would approach the gate agent as follows. You state your name and request. You make a clear and concise case. And then, after the gate agent informs you that your chances of making it onto this flight are on par with the possibility that a dinosaur will spontaneously reanimate and teach himself to fly an airplane, you nod empathically, say something like "Well, I'm sure we can find a way to work this out," and step just to the side of the agent's kiosk. Here is where the Kindly Brontosaurus rears amiably into the frame. You must stand quietly and lean forward slightly, hands loosely clasped in a faintly prayerful arrangement. You will be in the gate agent's peripheral vision-close enough that he can't escape your presence, not so close that you're crowding him-but you must keep your eyes fixed placidly on the agent's face at all times. Assemble your features in an understanding, even beatific expression. Do not speak unless asked a question. Whenever the gate agent says anything, whether to you or other would-be passengers, you must nod empathically.
Continue as above until the gate agent gives you your seat number. The Kindly Brontosaurus always gets a seat number.
The Decline of the Fish Stick?
And seafood in general.
Fish sticks just aren't cutting it anymore. The frozen-fish industry has faced a problem of making the easy dinner staple more appealing, especially to children at home and in school.
"[Kids] want to have something they could get at a restaurant or something that looks familiar to them," said Pat Shanahan, program director of Genuine Alaska Pollock, a group representing the fisheries supplying the catches commonly used in fish sticks.
The 10 Most Disgusting Scandi Foods
Well you are what you eat and the scandis sure do love eating surströmming and lutefisk.
Lutfisk, another element of Scandinavian "cuisine" if you can call it that. This gelatinous mix, made from aged stockfish or whitefish, has a smell that rivals surströmming's horrific odour. "It smells of saltpetre, tastes acrid, with the texture of rotten rubber," moans @Cunobaros on Twitter.
Then go here and crash some planets.
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And my twitter thang.

Some of us can only wish. G-d love her, but my mother was such a bad cook that it would have been a mercy to get an occasional pot pie or fish stick. Have you ever had rice so undercooked that it was still crunchy, but wet? I have. Have you ever enjoyed a meatloaf which was mostly zucchini and served out of a bowl with a big spoon, topped with mustard? I have.
Oddly enough, her mother was a great cook. Some skills, apparently, skip a generation.

For the record, Ferguson told Variety, he was already planning to leave this year before Letterman announced his impending retirement. CBS convinced him to stay on board until the end of 2014. “It’s an inevitable thing when David announced his retirement, people are going to say ‘Oh he’s leaving because of that,’” Ferguson said. “No matter what I say or what I do, they’re gonna say that.”

Question 2: "are you of Hispanic....?" "Blank, or I hang up."
Question 3: "am I reaching you on a cell phone or a land line?" *pause* "I can't think of a reason it would benefit me to answer." "Which option should I fill in." *sighs, rolls eyes* "Blank, or I hang up."
"That's all our questions."

A reminder that Debra Winger played Diana's younger sister, Drusilla, aka Wonder Girl, in the Linda Carter TV series.
So adorable.

My mom is right up there in the pantheon of lousy cooks....but I recently found out that my paternal grandad's role among the group herding sheep in Western Colorado was camp cook.

The Pens shook off the Blue Jackets but it wasn't easy. Now they wait for NYRangers/kitten raping Flyers series to end. Both of those teams play a similar game as the Blue Jackets but are better. The Pens struggled with Columbus. I'm not bullish on Pittsburgh's chances going forward in the Playoffs.

Thursday plan to arrive. Get settled. Then see if I have to deal with another 2 hour wait like last year to get my registration packet and badge.
Friday is first day of con. Which means start early and probably stay there until about 7 or 8pm.
Saturday will be the long day since I will stay for the art auction which runs until 11pm.
Sunday wrap things up, collect any art I commissioned. And then hit the road about noon for a 7 hour drive.

Buy a Febreeze air freshener, the kind with the two scents in the same bottle, plug that bad boy in while you're out and BAM! that room will smell fresh and clean like a spring breeze when you get back (and the maids won't touch it). BTDT, I was a smoker at the time and wow what a difference. When I was packing out to get on the airplane the maid told me the management was considering putting them in all the smoking rooms.

Anna Puma,
Do NOT stay at the Knight's Inn. DO NOT.
I made that mistake six years ago, and found out the hard way, that it's one of those places that rents rooms by the hour.
Maid's carts rumbling out front all night long, and unspeakable conversations in the parking lot.
I slept the night through with a Browning BDA .380 in my fist, and didn't sleep very damn much, besides.
That was a mistake I won't make twice.

Mogil wondered whether the rodents were responding to the sight of a woman or man or to something more subtle. So he told the people in his lab to place their worn T-shirts near injected animals and then leave the room. Even when the humans werenÂ’t present, the results were the same. Rats and mice showed about a 36% lower score on the grimace scale when exposed to male versus female T-shirts, the team reports online today in Nature Methods. (Female mice were slightly more sensitive to the effect.) Placing a womanÂ’s T-shirt next to a manÂ’s T-shirt negated the impact. Bedding material from unfamiliar male mice and guinea pigs, as well as pet beds slept in by unsterilized male cats and dogs, produced the same response: Male odors seemed to act like painkillers.

Pretty sure Ferguson didn't have any say in the matter. Worldwide Pants produces his show, and that is Letterman's production company. I think CBS is cutting all ties to Letterman even though it means getting rid of Ferguson.

See my comment at 113. Apparently Ferguson was planning to leave even before Letterman announced his retirement, and CBS convinced him to stay on til the end of the year.

Now that may sound like tepid praise but coming from me (who has endured some really god awful software installations that not only sucked big time but actually ruined hardware and took hours to recover from)
Was able to even migrate my Firefox profile and all my addons etc. (some of which don't look as good now compared to the stock Pale Moon but I'm keeping them just like the old lady who wouldn't divorce the husband: ("I don't want to break in a new one and he keeps the bed warm at night").
Plus there's the added bonus that unlike if I upgraded Firefox, I still have my old Firefox installation still usable.
As a far as speed goes . . . I dunno. I kept my old Firefox because the new upgrades were all slower than snail shit. This is about even, so no improvement on that score.
Added bonus; Firefox addons/extensions work well in it. (at least the ones I have work okay. It rejected a really old one but I expected that.)
Scale of 1-10?
I'd give it an 8.9

@ no. 300, Zip 74.
My daily carry is a 1911 Commander.
But, my motorcycle carry was the Browning BDA, for the following reasons.
1. It fit in the pouch on the back of my Gold Wing's driver's backrest.
2. It had a 13 round magazine, +1 in the chamber.
3. It fit in the pouch on the back of my Gold Wing's driver's backrest.

I'm a huge fan of the 1911. I'm a huger fan of my S ampersand W Model 28, Highway Patrolman, .357 with a 4" barrel.
It's bowling pin accurate at 100 yards, and I can empty the cylinder at 10 yards, into the 9 ring, in just over 1.55 seconds, from the low-ready. My reloads aren't competitively fast, but I'll put 'em up against Mfume at the ATM machine.
But, for the cross-country touring on the 'Wing? I'll stick to the BDA. The compromise on all factors balances to it's favor.

I always try to reckon parking and driving hassles into these calculations.
If I can avoid having to hunt for parking in an area that's unfamiliar to me and where I don't know the special super secret tricks, or the street cleaning schedule, that's worth some dosh right there.
San Francisco parking horror story: I was hunting for a spot midmorning in a part of town that's known to be tough to park in. Where you go for the spot first if you see it and only then bother to check the signage.
I had been down one block over and over and finally a car pulled out in front of me from a good space. I was on that like a duck on a June bug. But within literally thirty seconds of my turning off the car, people started swarming out of houses all up and down the block and getting in their cars and driving away.
I thought, "Wait, what? Too far inland for a tsunami panic."
Then I looked in the rearview mirror and saw this absolutely insane swarm of meter maid carts come around the corner and turn onto that block. Probably fourteen of them at once. It looked like a parade.. More than I have ever seen in one place before or since. Street cleaning day. One minute to zero hour. No mercy shown. Parking enforcers got out of their carts and were standing beside cars with pens poised, ready to issue fat tickets, right as the hour rolled over.
I know that per the new politically correct Duke University rules we aren't supposed to use the word "rape", so instead I'll just refer to San Francisco's parking enforcement as "assrape".

Could someone explain in short sentences and small words for stupid ol' me what XKCD was saying wrong in that cartoon?
Simple declarative statements, avoiding conditionals and nuance is preferred.

++++
The author is conflating two separate (but related) things. The 1st amendment to our constitution guarantees our right to free speech against governmental action. However, the concept of free speech goes beyond just governmental actions.
One easy way to think about it is with regard to colleges, private and public. At the public colleges, they are very much more restricted, legally, in the ways in which they can limit speech. Since they are owned and run by the government, anytime they do something to limit speech, it is the government limiting speech.
Private colleges have much more flexibility in restricting speech, if they so choose. If they want to say that protesting is not allowed in the quad, they are legally entitled to do so. However, many private colleges value the concept of free speech. They want to encourage academic freedom, the liberty of their students to speak their minds, etc. So even though they are entitled to clamp down on unpopular speech, they choose not to. They believe in free speech.
The problem with the XKCD cartoon is that first off, it comes on the heels of the firing of the CEO of Firefox. The guy at XKCD mocks those who are making the case for free speech by suggesting that we don't understand what the 1st amendment is and what its limitations are.
We know damn well what the 1st amendment is, and beyond that, we also understand the value of free speech outside of 1st amendment grounds.

You have to figure that the left, and XKCD, would suddenly rediscover the huge importance of free speech outside of a governmental context if there were a wave of people getting fired from their jobs for expressing left-wing political sentiments.

Hunting Partner showed me a smartphone app called Maverick, it's a GPS navigation application that gives you coordinates. Also has the compass and shows you on the map what direction you are facing. Handy for finding your way to your treestand in the dark as well as finding your way out afterwards. Only for the Android AFAIK but I'm sure that other platforms have similar apps.

That would have been nice back in the early 80s when I followed a buddy into the brush Pheasant hunting. I knew the area well so did't think it would be a problem. We spent 12 hours basically lost in the woods. Finaly came out on a road I knew at about 11 o'clock at night with temps dropping and us un prepared and 8 miles from home. Luckily the other members of the hunting group were out driving the roads and we got picked up. But an ap like that would have got us home way quicker. But there would have been less stories and ridicule.

Work on your weaknessess and hone your strengths. You could get really lucky, but, you'll need it. I'd probably get murdered in a monster field like that. Well, if it's around 2000 runners, I'd consider that doable. Tough, but not beyond reach to get a place. I thought it'd be around 10,000 plus. There must have really been live brontosauruses when you had to use that strategy, because no gate agent today needs "permission" to fill empty seats. It's all automated.
Pls tell us: how were 20 people AT THE GATE without at least standby tickets issued and paid-for at a counter or kiosk? It has to be years since that's happened.
The entire point of a standby ticket is that you'll get on if there are empty seats. Filled seats mean revenue. Empty seats don't.
That's why many airlines post the numbers and positions of unsold seats for individual flights on their reservation sites. You don't need to accept a gate agent's word that the flight is full -- the info is right there on line. Any agent who lets a flight leave half-empty when people are right there to board it, having purchased standby tickets, would be fired.

6000 would be too much for me. 2000, maybe. B+M is the best and will translate to the tourn a hell of a lot better. But, online can't be beat for getting hands in and working shit out. Dude, you gotta get zen... don't tilt... ever. What's the deal with online where you are? You can't have an account fullstop? Can you play for small bucks?

Posted by: qdpsteve at April 29, 2014 01:11 AM
Yeah, I've heard of UP. Probably from you. I should check it out as I'd like to play online with fewer russians. If you can play online anywhere, do so if you're really interested in doing a seriously big tournament. Even if it's just play money. The monkey factor is very high, but, the more hands you see, the better you'll get at working out what works for you and how to adapt to different situations. The more hands you play the better you'll get and should help reduce the tilt factor.

Try telling her that "dog lover", in any language is a poor choice for an eatery, regardless. A certain historic president might pick it for a chow down, but, I know I'd be wary. But, that's just me.

I took Italian for a semester in college and have visited Italy plenty of times, but to be honest my Italian remains rudimentary at best.
Anyway, I know someone who is in the process of starting a business, and part of the business name is supposed to mean "dog-lover" in Italian. And by dog-lover, I mean what it means in English, i.e. someone who likes dogs (not sexually obviously). A big fan of dogs.
Now, this person is in the process of legally registering their business name, and designing a logo, and they have convinced themselves that "dog-lover" in Italian is "Cani Amante," which is going to be (part of) their official business name.
I've been trying to tell this person that I think her chosen name is grammatically incorrect in actual Italian, but she refuses to believe me. And so she is going forward with this name which I think will only cause actual Italians to either burst out laughing or just scratch their heads.
I get the feeling she just looked up "dog" in an Italian-English dictionary, saw it was "Cani," then looked up "lover," saw it was "Amante," and just transliterated them directly like that.
But I've been trying to explain that syntactically, it would not mean the same thing in Italian as it does in English that way, and that if you want to say "dog-lover" in Italian, you'd have to say "Amante dei Cani," i.e. lover of dogs.
The way she has it, "Dog" "Lover" are just two unrelated nouns placed adjacent to each other, but which in Italian would have no grammatical connection, because it doesn't work the glomerative way that English and German do, and which she erroreously thinks applies to all languages.
Instead, try saying the phrase "giraffe astronaut." Now, all that means in English is the word giraffe followed by the word astronaut -- it does NOT mean someone who explores the outer-space universe of giraffes while wearing a spacesuit. It could conceivably mean a giraffe that goes exploring in outer space, but that's not the intended meaning she's looking for. At best, "Cani Amante" just means a horny dog that tries to screw everything -- literally a "dog lover" like a "dog casanova." But that's a best-case scenario -- I think that in reality Cani Amante is just a grammar-free mess of two unconnected words standing next to each other.
But no. She insists that Amante dei Cani is just ugly and awkward, and she doesn't want that as her business name, and therefore I must be wrong, and she's going ahead with Cani Amante despite my warnings.
And so, I place it in your hands: Who is right?
How do you say "dog-lover" (i.e. someone who likes dogs) in Italian, properly?
Someone's entire career and a lot of business investment money depends on it. She won't listen to me -- I need backup. Posted by: zombie at April 29, 2014 01:53 AM (mizYg) Hide posts from (mizYg)

For one thing, Italians take "love" very seriously, and "amante" is defined as:
"fond, keen, loving
man, lover, boyfriend; mistress, female lover
be fond of, love, like, be attracted to; enjoy; prefer"
This does not sound like a good direction to be going.
Oh, some backup -- http://www.wordreference.com/enit/lover

1. Are you both renters, or does one of you own the house?
2. It is reasonable to attach each expense in the house to a metric. Expenses might include garbage, electricity, telephone, rent, cable, water, heat. Metrics might include square footage, number of users, amount used. So long as the metric for an expense has changed with the addition of the sister, it is perfectly reasonable to request for the allocation to be changed.
For instance, it is perfectly reasonable to split the household water bill 3 ways unless she can prove she showers elsewhere.....but this is complicated by the landscape water bill that should not change because she didn't move her plants in with her.

Wow, you're right -- excllent link.
It essentially confirms what I originally said -- "amante dei cani":
"dog lover n (person: likes dogs) amante dei cani nm, nf
Amanda has five wonderful huskies and is a true dog lover.
Amanda ha 5 splendidi husky ed è una vera amante dei cani."
As for this "cinofilo" thing -- that's lookin' pretty "idiomatic" or whatever.
The point behind this business name, I perhaps should make clear, is that it is for Americans. Not Italians. So the name, you see, must be smei-understandable to English speakers, in a sort of of "I feel clever for being able to half translate that."
Kind of like "Der Weinerschnitzel" (which was also totally ungrammatical) -- you know it's foreign, but you can sort of half-guess the meaning.
No one in America would have the slightest clue what "cinofilo" would supposedly mean. Posted by: zombie at April 29, 2014 02:37 AM (mizYg) Hide posts from (mizYg)
Well, it does look like it's Roman-transliterated bastardized Greek. I'd guess the roots were "ΚΥΩΝ" [cion] ("dog" in ancient Greek -- sorry for the weird alphabet change, but the common name changed between ancient and modern Greek [of interest, the word "cynic" derives from this root, for the dogged behavior involved]) and "philos" ("friend" in Greek [both ancient and modern])

I've been evaluating places to live, and the process has impressed me with how little I know about commonplace things in other places. For instance, all the poisonous snakes around here have the same-shaped head and rattle. All the poisonous spiders are patent-leather black, have a red hourglass on their bellies, and are found tucked under things.

The decision last week turned down Eileen Battisti's request to reverse the September 2011 sale of her home outside Aliquippa in western Pennsylvania.
"I paid everything, and didn't know about the $6.30," Battisti said. "For the house to be sold just because of $6.30 is crazy."
