When I was in college, a High School friend gave me a baggie of stuff that had randomly sprouted in the closet-sized backyard of his condo. Back at the University of Casual Sun-Bathing there came a day when the oh-so-cool were doing "tastings" of various flavors, and I contributed some of my stash.
It was received generally well, and everyone was going, "Good stuff.... Is that Hawaiian? Is that from Humboldt County? Is that Mexican herb?" To which I replied, "Nah.....that's Newhall dachshund-shit weed."

But in at least a half-dozen places in LA County you can tell a place was once one of those Taco Bells. In Thousand Oaks the original Taco Bell became a store specializing in scuba diving gear but still had the old facade. In a few cases they became Mexican fast food joints that weren't Taco Bell but were now a lot closer to what you might actually be offered in a fast food joint in Mexico.

Years ago I worked at a truck depot next to a mushroom farm. Every couple of days a semi would come in with a 53' trailer full of horse dung and dump it in the yard. They would shuffle it around and stir it up wit front end loaders. There was a 20' high mound of it next to equipment shed at the farm. If they didn't stir it up a couple of days after a rain it would start off gassing and sometimes explode and fling shit everywhere.

459...but BBQ I don't apparently
You need a Smoker to create good 'Barbeque'.
A grill is not the same thing.
Grills are good...for grilling, which doesn't take a long time.
With a Smoker, you can take a tough cut of meat, slow cook it all day and turn it into a tender, succulent delicacy.
BBQ sauce is optional.
I have a chimney-stack style of Smoker, with a good sized attached fire box on the side.
It does a pretty good job.
But I've learned that with the stacker type of Smoker...you have some drippage going on, onto the lower racks.
So I have do a load of same types of meat.

510 So the 'art' of BBQ is making tough cuts of meat tender and yummy?
with or w/o sause?
----------
The art of Smoking...yes.
BBQ is a type of flavor. Not a verb.
For example, when I do a load of whole chickens and turkey breasts in my Smoker....they never see any barbeque sauce.
Same with a load of Samon.
But when I smoke a load of pork ribs, a roast and a brisket...I add some BBQ sauce to some of the pieces in the very last stage of the cooking.
Some people like to add their own sauce.

A walk-off grand-slam against of one of the best closers in baseball?
I beg to differ, but I won't argue because we merely come from different disciplines.
I certainly respect hockey, so I'll never disparage the sport. It is, indeed, a manly-man's endeavor.
I just always dreamed of becoming a Major League pitcher. I never had the talent, but I love the numbers and the match-ups.

That's one of the benefits of it. The art is in infusing the meat with the smoke and whatever seasonings you happen to be using.
As for the sauce -- well, according to Peruvians 18:15:
Apply thine condiments only after thine meat hath fully cooked, never before; And only as an enhancement to that which was imparted by spice and smoke;
Lest thy meat become unrecognizable as meat;
And thy smoke and spice banished from thy taste buds

Having been to Olympic Stadium (aka. the Big O) I can understand why it wasn't a great place for baseball.
On the other hand, the strike pretty much did the Expos in. They were playoff-bound when the strike hit.

That would have to be a solid mile of privet at least! Those suckers go all over. We've got bees in our backyard, and it's interesting how the taste changes through the year - we usually get honey up to 3 times a year I think depending on their health.
We "loan out" our backyard, and normally they give you a bunch of honey for it - but we ask only that they save us a small amount (1 jar) from just our bees. It's sort of a pain for them because they just put it all together, but they do. It's neat to get a big hunk of the hive and honey.
We've got cherry, peach, apricot and a flower farm nearby not to mention vineyards and strawberries. We still have unopened jars sitting around because we're not honey people I guess. It's more fun to watch them.

Not surprised on Air Miles.
You may want to just do a general search to see what you can find sans Air Miles and CAA.
(Translation: Air Miles is a program in Canuckistan that gets you points for travel and other stuff if you buy certain products. CAA is the Canuck version of AAA.)

You need to put up wind barriers.
We did peppers and tomatoes from plants, just like we always do.....although the underlying reason why did come-up in conversation, as follows: "why is it, that you can go over to the seed packets, and buy a packet of tomato seeds for $3....and they give you 100 seeds of the same variety? Are these people nuts? We're going to plant maybe 20 plants, of 16 varieties. Why don't these seed companies sell 100 tomato seeds that are all guaranteed to be different?"

They were headed for big things that season, despite that crappy stadium. Marquis Grissom, Moises Alou, Wil Cordero, Cliff Floyd, Larry Walker, Rondell White, Ken Hill, Jeff Fassero and a young Pedro Martinez.
So many players got their start there and they wound-up being a Minor-League Franchise for the rest of MLB.
Vladimir Guererro, Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Jose Vidro... damn. So many.

It's real easy. Take a large empty field. Put two crates of dynamite in the middle, and wire for detonation with a timer. Put a table, with straps, on top. Get one of Doc Kevorkian's euthanasia machines (if it's good enough for people to choose it themselves, it's good enough to use on prisoners) -- the Thanatron model -- http://tinyurl.com/dlmct9 .
Note carefully that the Thanatron is designed to accomplish death within about 2 minutes. So, here's the drill -- the condemned is strapped to the table and wired with sensors for a panel of doctors to establish death, the dynamite is set to a 5-minute timer that can be canceled by the medical panel signing off that death has occurred., and the Thanatron is started. Easy-peasy. You get a humanely-executed corpse until 4:59, and a humanely-executed red mist afterward.

It's not just Steyn. It's out there.
American business used to be about doing things that would please a customer. Those that pleased the customer best would prosper over those who pleased the customer a little less so.....but now, American business is about complying with government edicts, bribing the government so that the next set of edicts is slanted in their favor, and finessing government shakedowns should they somehow manage to turn a profit. All else is secondary.
It's no wonder that customers are sullen....it's not like anyone gives a rat's ass about them anymore.

I was thirteen in '84 and that book was awesome!
You couldn't have stopped me from reading "Animal Farm".
Those books captured the imagination more than I can express. They were vivid and strange. They painted a canvass of what may be.
In one word? "Unforgettable".

These days you raise money for an IPO so you can give that money to a politician so that the politician can bankroll you with taxpayer funds. That way, you make money, you lose money, who cares. You win, whatever the outcome. You can go "bankrupt" and still walk away with a hundred mil.
This is not a model for success. Posted by: navybrat at May 01, 2014 03:11 AM (JgC5a) Hide posts from (JgC5a)
I was the Corporate Controller for two firms in Silicon Valley that made things -- fiberoptic gear and industrial robots -- as well as another that implemented custom logic designs into chips. I understood those businesses and helped improve their profitability while increasing customer satisfaction -- and handled the relevant paper-shuffling in-between. I'm pretty sure I'm good at it -- being that I've seen the numbers.
There's almost nothing like that in Silicon Valley any more. It's all Facebooks and Twitters and Groupons -- not to mention the Solyndras and Teslas and Googles and Netflixes. The old concept of "value add" has given way to "loophole exploit" -- and, since the loophole probably exists through a government fumble, what better way to secure revenue than to buddy up with government to preserve the fumble and your place in it?

A new Animal Farm.
Pigs in the manor house drinking $16 mixers and exclaiming to each other, "income equality!"
The mare in the stable explaining the way of things to her colt, "Some are more income equal than others."

Oh, how I wish it weren't.
And that's a huge impetus to my desire to GTFO -- I've spent decades "calling it like I see it" and trying to use observable truth to guide companies to better policies. I could do that for a pecan farm in Georgia, an auto repair shop in Tennessee, or an ironworker in North Carolina.....but I can't do it here, because I won't book a receivable based on how much a politician has been bribed.
Trillions, literally trillions have been transferred from the part of the economy devoted to making people happy to the part where politicians hand it out to cronies. Unsurprisingly, there ain't a lot of happy people.

Well, I did a bit of searching, and the only helpful input I can contribute relates to getting business suits....and that involves Hong Kong.

I heard that stupidity in '86-89. I took the "high road" and went for "English" over an actual trade.
*applause for the dumb-ass*
I hear "They" need welders. I'm artistic and I can keep a bead. I believe.
Consistency is key. Balance is necessary. It'll take awhile. I think I'll take a class or thirty. Posted by: Slapweasel at May 01, 2014 04:31 AM (lq3Ak) Hide posts from (lq3Ak)
I have a cousin who is a plumber. While I was chugging along at $40K/yr as a 3rd assistant to a deputy accountant, he had his own house and was working on getting his pilot's license. He now owns his own company.
If you want to succeed in the trades, you have to be sharper than the average collegiate -- because the average collegiate is going to appeal to credentialism to succeed where a tradesman has to manage his rep.
