Overnight Open Thread (4 Jan 2014)
— CDR M

Alright, you morons with the frozen pipes? Don't do this! House fire caused by tenant thawing frozen pipes.

Keep an eye on the sun. Big ass sunspot 1944 is rotating into geoeffective position for Earth directed CME's. In fact, there was some activity with M-Class flares earlier today with a CME. NFL Playoff Games Not Sold Out?

NFL fans forgo playoff tickets, prefer the couch. Heck, I'm that way now with most movies.

the struggle to sell tickets is due in part to fans increasingly wanting to avoid traffic, parking prices, ticket costs and lack of cellphone service. The in-home experience, she noted, which can now include multiple-screen football viewing, has become much more desirable. She also said there is typically more "tightened spending so soon after the holidays."

Yes to all of that but the last line is BS. This would've shown up in previous years if that was the case. Obamacare and the Obama economy are the more likely culprits. Or maybe it is global warming or something that Bush did.

Orgasm Class

OMG. There is an online course (6 weeks long) to help women learn how to achieve orgasm taught by someone known as the orgasm whisperer.

Password Generator

Have trouble making up a password. Passweird will generate a gross one for you.

Epic Music

I'm gonna have to give this album a listen to when it comes out (probably won't be for sale just like Ninja Tracks as they only do music for trailers and commercials). It is a group called ReallySlowMotion and the album is called Iron Poetry. The first track, Aeorien, from that album is here.

Felon Political Registration

Well this does not surprise me. 7 in 10 felons register as democrat.

Wanna Get High?

Evidently young dolphins like to get high. By sucking on puffer fish. Just a matter of time before we see LIVs trying this.

Workplace Fails

Syrian Rebel Weaponry

Talk about DIY weaponry. Take a gander at Syrian rebel rocket launchers. Just need a long bow.

My Little Cthulhu

Heh. My little Cthulhu.

Naval Aviation History

Ah yes. 25 years ago, back when we had "peace through strength" instead of "leading from behind", two F-14 Tomcats shot down two Libyan MiG-23's.

Cat Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by old fashion comics from yesteryear that contain sexual references:

Also, the bit in the sidebar about Russian helicopters rescuing the Iraqi government begs the question, why would the result there be any different than it was for Russian helicopters in Afghanistan?

14 Morons and Moronettes!  What I learned from my not-a-moron pa was 'keep the water in the pipes flowing so they do not freeze' or; leave a tap running.

Another thing that is if you have a pump, it pays to buy one of them electric coil well heaters and not depend on having a lightbulb on all the time.

111 92 Caffeine is a pain relieve enhancer. Can you have coffee with Tylenol? Posted by: Carol at January 04, 2014 10:11 PM (z4WKX) Works better with Aspirin. They sell it as Anacin. Aspirin with a full stomach (cheeseburger?) and coffee will cure a hang over.

BC I helped pre-release trials for both pepcid and tagament...

pepcid can be compounded with a mild sedative if your ulcers are subject to increased acid flow from stress....

talk to the doc.

In most folk it is caused by a bacteria and reduced resistance from stress or diet....you can get mechanical ulcers that are caused by nerves or deterioration of the stomach wall.

Get better they're no fun I was lucky enough mine calmed down when I was ~ 28

189 (Played a lot of Call of Cthulhu back in the day...) My main man is Cecil Talbot. He cares for his aging mother at the Talbot mansion and uses her fortune to collect antique firearms, pornographic statuary and forbidden texts. He combines a pencil-thin mustache and affectation of John Waters with the bug-eyes of Steve Buscemi. He is equipped with linen pajamas, a silk Kimono he wears over the pajamas for additional armor, ladies' cigarettes, a 16th century marine flintlock adorned to resemble a devil penis, and an extra large mint julep. He enjoys throwing parties for his friends. He is also an incurable racist. Cecil's companions are Wanda and Regina Shackleford, spinster sisters with shared interests in phrenology and seances, Pips Codswallop, the famed war aviator of England who was denied his official ace status and spent months in a sanitarium for insisting his fifth kill was against a giant black bat, Sharon Derriere, the bewitching stag film actress best known for The Virgin's Nightdress and her performance in 1922's The Mermaid and the Naughty Octopus, a film she does not remember appearing in that was so perverse the government has burned every copy it can find, and Chang the Celestial, an inscrutable Oriental who harbors a dark secret: he is actually Mexican and just playing along with the racist white people who think he is Chinese. /something awful

191 Q: Is PIR sex also rape? A: Not if it's a male rectum. Q: Given that (almost) every other mammal species uses PIV sex for both reproduction and social bonding, why are humans different? A: Because humans are the only species that rape. Q: Uhhh, no, that's false. A: Because only male mammals rape. Q: No that's false too. A: Because STFU! Q: So, are you saying that humans are not the result of an evolutionary process? A: Hell No! Darwin Rules! Q: So, what evolutionary advantage is offered by eliminating the routine method available to propagate the species, in evolutionary Darwinian style? A: Because Turkey Basters aren't rape! Q: So you are saying then that we have evolved beyond evolution and that we can now dispense with the rape-rape PIV, use artificial methods to reproduce for those sick bastards that want babies, and have fun in post-evolutionary ways? A: You got it, dumbass. BTW, we have found that the 'Oxo Good Grips Bird Baster with No-Drip Spout' works a treat for all sorts of uses...

199 Omeparzole is one of the active ingredients in Nexium. It is the generic drug for treating overproduction of acid in the stomach. If you didn't test positive for h-pylori bacteria, then your ulcers may be causes by something else unpleasant. Sometimes a virus infection, bad diet, high stress, stomach malfunction, worse cause autoimmune disease or cancer. With a biopsy you should know fairly quickly what is going on and usually there are some good options if the root cause is caught early enough. Just hope you have a competent gastroenterologist.

231 193 My fellow jurors were fine. I learned to trust my instincts about witness testimony because the judge spoke to us after the trial and confirmed my initial thoughts on each witness. It's important thing to trust your instincts and don't be afraid to state those thoughts in the jury room. The attorneys grilled us thoroughly before we were seated. The judge was a fine man. Seemed a conservative sort, but because he'd been on the bench for a very long time, very compassionate . Of course, he didn't give any of this away during the trial. It was after we reached a verdict and the trial was completed that he came back to thank us for our service. Spent quite a bit of time talking to us and answering our questions. I was very impressed.

232 I am pretty active in local politics. Thirty years ago I got called for Federal Jury duty. Got it postponed once, then came in for questioning. I knew the judge and both lawyers. It was suggested, by the clerk, that I write the chief judge and ask to be removed from the rolls. I did, they did. I sort of wanted to be one a jury, but no one would have me.

One guy let a ball dribble between his legs to miss an easy out. The other guy went wide on a 47-yard field goal. Back when a 47-yarder was like a 53-yarder today.

I'm a Buffalo fan still bitter over a lot of things in those Super Bowl losses, but a missed 47-yard kick isn't one of them. Doesn't earn the goat tag.

276 With any of the PPI medications it is best to fix the underlying cause rather than rely on the stuff for the rest of your life. There are some not very well understood long term effects of using that stuff. Changing your diet, de-stressing, or surgery if it's a stomach defect, are much better options. I have Celiac disease and in the process of trying to fix a damaged stomach and esophagus, which ultimately allowed the doctors to catch and remove the onset of throat and stomach cancer, I was prescribed Omerprazole. It helped manage symptoms so that I could eat in the meantime.

I hate winter too - but crap, I'm sitting in my centrally heated living room and when I go out tomorrow I'll have to walk a few steps to get to my car. Think of pioneers living in friggin' cabins in the upper Midwest 100 years ago, gathered around a fireplace, having to go out to feed animals, and saddle up a horse if they wanted to go anywhere. If they could come back from the dead, they'd call us pussies.

A book I'm reading now details all the steps Victorians had to undertake just to do the wash (which was the absolute crappiest job on one of those big estates in England, they would make servants do laundry to punish them.) It wasn't just a matter of heating water, letting laundry soak, scrubbing it against a washboard, rinsing it, and so on - they had to make their own soap, their own starch, their own spot removers, their own dyes. There was no drycleaning so those lace and satin clothes worn by aristocrats had to be picked apart, all the pieces washed separately and then sewn back together. And I bitch because I have to throw laundry in the washer and dryer.

385 364 Ever see"Girl With the Pearl Earring"? The main character is maid in the artist, Vermeer's , household . She spends most of her time washing for the family. The movie was very good at portraying what a miserable life servants led back then. But, of course, when doing that kind of work is the difference between life and death for your family what choice did they have? We are indeed lucky.

403 364 I hate winter too - but crap, I'm sitting in my centrally heated living room and when I go out tomorrow I'll have to walk a few steps to get to my car. Posted by: Donna V. at January 04, 2014 11:35 PM (R3gO3) Cripes, even today most women in the world have to haul their laundry down to a river, creek or other body of fresh water and hand wash it. Back breaking, and it takes all day to do all their laundry, which is usually a lot less than a couple loads of ours. A washing machine that is so hated by the left, has freed more women from being tied to their chores than anything else.

There were certain fashions (some still exist for other reasons) that were derived from the fact of people not bathing and their clothes being very dirty.

Probably, but that's why I found it bizarre -- we're not talking about a flight from St. Paul to Minot, we're talking about a flight from Atlanta to Greensboro, NC. With all the canceled flights going from, say, Atlanta to New Jersey, couldn't they just "borrow" one of those planes, fly people to Greensboro and just fly back?

Before you start sanding, call Behr tech support. Yes, there is one -- and they really go the extra mile to be helpful (my issue was that we painted the house before we moved in (1997) and I wanted to touch some things up that got banged up during the re-roof/re-gutter process.....and the recipes I'd painstakingly saved used colorants they had to ditch when they reformulated the paints low-VOC).

And you know in the past month I've gotten identical notices from courts in Washington, Virginia and Kentucky. I didn't know I had so many "cases" pending. I'll have to go back and check my records. I can see forgetting one or two "cases" but five? No way.

DO NOT USE ANYTHING WITH A FLAME.
DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED.

That's said;

Open up a couple taps first to relieve any pressure and so you'll know when you succeed.

Hair dryer is good, heat gun also. Be careful if the pipes are pvc or close to pvc.

Examine area for flammables. cover. Have buckets ready. also be ready to shut off main. go slowly don't panic and try to heat too fast too much area. have help in case things get emergency. have fire extinguisher avail.

Good. Luck.

The company I worked for for 18 yrs closed and had to be liquidated. (no bankruptcy or credit so most everything went to the scrappers.)

There was a 24" Bench lathe (it was very heavy and the motor was 3 phase and I already had a ton of stuff so I passed on it)

There was an Index Vertical Milling machine. (of course it weighed a ton and there was no way for me to move it and I didn't know anyone who could. the market was 0 for resale. So I passed.)

We even had a 5' floor lathe, 18" swing but there was no way that was going anywhere by me.

Like I said. Regrets, I've had a few but then too few to mention.

The Bench Lathe I really regret. I thought I'd be able to get a job where I was moving to and I'd get a new one. HAH! Economy tanked just after move in 2007.

I can understand a certain amount of that -- I've got the HF version of the Sieg X2 mini-mill and it's a bear to wrassle around -- and it's just a toy. But 2/3 of the motor is copper, and the bed and ways are high-quality scrap iron.....and then you can salvage out bearings, cross slides, lead screws, and the like.....and, surely, you could truck around the tooling. When did this happen?

What is it? A lot of time, it's getting imaginative with the uses. Not that you'd want to use a semiconductor process oven to make pizzas (although that residual arsenic contamination goes well with anchovies), but you might be able to move it out by calling it an "environmental test chamber" or saying it could be used to "kiln-dry wood".

That's what really annoys me about feminists. They make it sound as if there was a concerted effort throughout history on the part of the Evil Ones With Penises to Oppress Women. As a matter of fact, there was a very good reason for the strict separation of male/female roles: women have kids. Both men and women did exhausting physical work and labored from sunup to sunset, but because women had the kids and are generally better at looking after them, it made sense for them to do the household chores and the cooking so they could keep an eye on the small children. Meanwhile, the guys were out there breaking their backs plowing or something - gee, what "male privilege."

Women couldn't become "emancipated" until all these labor-saving applicances like vacuum cleaners and dishwashers and washers and driers were invented. (And Americans led the way in inventing such products.) It wasn't some stupid plot on the part of men.

A book called "The Dirt On Clean" sounds really interesting!

Eventually, if the low-footprint production can reproduce itself, you'll have a very robust technological level. On the other hand, yes, when the need is dire, pipe guns are pretty damned easy.

547 mero - what I meant was zero-production base as a design variable, like cost.  A design that can be built without an investment in a production tooling or requiring an existing base will be favored over one that does.  So a design like a sten gun that you can make with tools from Lowes and a pdf file will be preferred to an MP-5 that required exotic tooling.  The challenge will be to design the sten to outperform the MP5SD.  This will be a function of short baseline contracts and uncertain funding levels and strict "no Chinese shit" in anything that has a battery.

Shitload of truth there. I was very rarely sick as a kid once I got to be a few years old. No allergies, hardly got colds, never had measles or chicken pox. Did manage to get scarlet fever though when I was real young, but that was basically it. Even today I can't remember the last time I had anything flu like. I do know I was into everything as a kid, If it could be taken apart I fucked with it. Certain friends with overly strict parents who followed them around with a can of lysol seemed to always get sick. I remember my father calling them glass cage kids, meaning the parents never let them out of their cage. Never let them play by the creek, or the woods, or touch anything, or go out when the temperature dropped below a certain point, etc etc.

or, perhaps you could consider the various aspects of the idea.

There are countless people in the U.S. that will NEVER vote Rep.  NEVER.  NEVER.  NEVER.   However, they live their lives in a pretty conservative way.  If we can't get them to vote Rep, maybe we can get them to establish a new minimum for themselves by at least voting for sane people.

Now, I won't argue that such a new initiative can be named "Tea Party" or anything like it because that brand has already been demonized by the asshole left.  So pick a new name and give it the same goals.  For all I care you can name it the first 7 cusswords that come to your mind.

Also, just because I am opposed to runaway debt does not in any way mean that I have to love Boehner/McConnell/McCain/Grahamnesty does it?

Posted by: redc1c4 at January 05, 2014 02:41 AM (q+fqH)

I'm a California boy, so I can feel your pain....but here's the dealio -- normally, water supply pipes are run a certain difference belowground because even a hard freeze doesn't penetrate too far into the ground. At certain sustained cold levels, however, the cold will actually penetrate deeper than usual and the water supply will be extremely chilly.

At such times, if a pipe is running up inside an exterior wall, where the inside is 65 degrees and the outside is -5 degrees, it becomes very susceptible to becoming the average of those two temps, which is 30 degrees -- which is enough to freeze.

===or, perhaps you could consider the various aspects of the idea.

That was the play for Tea Party v1.0. Didn't work -- got demonized by Moonbat cultists anyway. Tea Party v2.0 tried "make nice with GOP" in response and delivered the 2010 wave as a valentine to go with -- and is, in return, getting a bunch of crap from the GOP "establishment". It may be that they need to take over the Libertarians, since they're essentially pursuing the historic Libertarian goals before that party went batshit ganja-smoking insane in the 80s. A rename isn't the big deal, though -- the problem is the way they've been treated leaves a trail of experience. Ted Cruz is really hitting on it with http://tinyurl.com/pxf85dz

1.  bury them deep enough -- up to 10 feet in Lat's around 61-63.

2.  build a circulating system so the water never sits still in the pipes. -- see Fairbanks AK, their whole system circulates, even thru the fire hydrants.

The problem was that TP1.0 ran into the buzzsaw of Dem "Party Discipline". The Dems were so into "Party Discipline" that they ruthlessly purged Lieberman, who was their VP Candidate short weeks before. Rightly disgusted by this, the TP tried to find a home in the GOP.....and were accepted until the 2010 wave demonstrated how enervated the "get-along GOP" was compared to the rabble-rousers.

It was only recently that I found out the difference between hydrants and faucets. In case you're somewhere warm and want to know the difference (if you're freezing your ass off, you probably already know), they both involve an above-ground water outlet.....but a faucet has water all the way to where you open or close it (usually aboveground), where a hydrant's valve is buried far below its handle, and the riser pipe that gets water to the surface is designed to slowly drain. If built correctly, a hydrant -- like a fire hydrant in NYC, perhaps -- can be used in sub-zero conditions (like by fire trucks), because the subsurface water is warm enough to flow through the riser to the hose connection before freezing.

It's a valid observation, but it misses an important point -- the Progressives could endure a 100-year "long march through the institutions" because the Right kept them safe and prosperous during the 100 years they were trying to muck things up. The Right cannot do a "long march" anywhere because under Progs things go to shit rapidly in a 6-month to 5-year timeline.

A standard external wall is 3-1/2 inches thick, and may be stuffed with insulation. If a 1/2-inch water supply pipe is mounted to a 2x4 along this wall, it could be mounted closer to the siding -- where it is -5 degrees, or mounted closer to the wallboard -- where it is 65 degrees. It may well be a differences of fractions of an inch closer to one side or another.

I actually had one of my credit cards issue a card -- on my account -- for my grandmother, in case she needed to stay at a hotel or book a flight or something....she didn't have one and wasn't going to qualify for one. So, I've had the experience of someone (who ended up dying of Alzheimer's) wandering around with the ability to put me into debt for several thousand dollars. I wouldn't do that for just anybody, and it was kind of scary, and while my maximum loss was maybe $12K, at least I could breathe into a bag and think of ways I could make up a $12K dent in my life.

At 12/31/08, when Obama had been elected and the Pelosi-Obama-Reid binge was just getting started, the national debt per capita was $35,153. A year ago, after four years of the Obamanation, it was $52,152. Where I was fretting about a blood relative (who I loved dearly) possibly running up my debt by $12K (although she never did), a political jackass Chicago politician who could DIAF for all I care absolutely ran up my personal debt by $16,999 over four years -- and, considering that only half the US population pays any Federal tax whatsoever [net] -- more likely over twice that.

If you can think of a lightning quick strategy to reach people that have never even thought of questioning what the media tells them and have voted like insane children for most of their lives, I am certainly willing to entertain your ideas.  I see it is as eliminate them or change their minds.  The first one will take some time and make me feel like shit.  The other will take a long time and I will feel better about myself.

Either way, I will never accept being their slave.  I would prefer to make that happen peacefully, but I will employ any means necessary.

However, if you are saying that you go beyond that to you would choose Peter King/McCain/the Maine twins over an actual person who opposes my slavery that happened to be a Dem (should we ever actually find another one) --  I have a problem with that.

Would you really care if a solid constitutionalist with a determination to be fiscally responsible were a Dem? If your choice was to vote for such a hypothetical Dem rather than a RINO, would you choose the RINO?
Posted by: jc

Yes, because the modern Democrat party isn't based on constitutional principles. It's based on an indiscriminateness in which our Western heritage, negative rights, and limited government are reflexively pissed and shat on.

There will be sooner be a redneck president of China than a confirmed case of a Constitutionalist Democrat.

Y'know, I could absolutely vote for the sort of politician who would say, "The fact that we are here today to debate raising AmericaÂ’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our GovernmentÂ’s reckless fiscal policies." -- provided that the words were heartfelt and not merely read from a teleprompter. But the guy that uttered those words went on to charge half-again as much on my taxpayer credit card as had previously been run up by every asshole President back to the creation of the Republic, combined.

What I'm saying is "don't say 'let's try this, it's never been tried' when it has been tried and people got badly burned. Trying to appeal to Democrats' common-sense to transcend party got all the common-sense Democrats purged from the party and the Tea Party demonized. Don't say, "ok, we'll ally with the opposition to those raving moonbats and start to gain some traction" when the opposition starts carving your backside as soon as you "ally" with it and the media portrays this is a "Conservative Civil War" between paint-lickers. The public is mad as hornets and could easily go for a "two terms, than the gallows" term-limit proprosal, but trying to repeat the mistakes already made ain't gonna go nowhere.

655 Not sure how slavery enters the situation

====

I don't know anybody that ever earned a living that didn't trade their time to get it.  Money is just a time coupon.   People trade their time to get it, and when they spend it they are buying other people's time.

When one confiscates the time of another, that is slavery.  Now, it can be done in the honest way -- like pre-1860 where the slaver flat out states their claim to ownership and steals the hours of your life thru brutality or other means ---

Or it can be done in the dishonest way where the slaver claims they are "entitled" to what you earned with the time of your life, and takes your time from you indirectly by taking the money you traded the hours of your life to get ---

Or it can be done in the astoundingly dishonest way where congress runs up a debt so large that it cannot be repaid.  That will have only a few probable outcomes --

A. I believe the most likely is the complete destruction of the value of the currency so that everyone who has traded the hours of their life for currency will have those hours effectively stolen from them thru destroying the storehouse of those working hours.

B.  The power to tax gives congress the ability (although I think much less likely that scenario A) to simply confiscate wealth to pay the debt.  Once again, the hours of someone's life traded to earn wealth are stolen.

Any way it is sliced, our lives are comprised of time.  Slavery is stealing of people's time.   The method used to complete the theft is just semantics to me.

because, as we all know, most people would MUCH rather work a minimum wage job than collect unemployment checks (ha)

Our fish need a reboot -- we had varied and complex collections up to 2004, when we remodeled the kitchen, and contributed zillions of fry over the years to our local fish club [we were largely responsible for the "rabbits of Lake Tanganyika" designation of Neolamprologus brichardi] .....but since then, we've been mostly neglecting the hard-liners in the tanks and they've responded by barely hanging-on.

It'd be cool to restart fishkeeping in a place I could lay down some infrastructure.

I was more worried about keeping them unaerated -- every time I got a standing wave in the damned cooler, a cup of water would end up on my back deck. Couldn't accelerate too fast; couldn't brake too fast; couldn't go slow/fast if it was within the resonance of the water in the cooler. I'd bag 'em if I had to do it over again.

http://tinyurl.com/ohebaeq

the only surprising part is that it didn't happen in Florida.

710 Wow, chemjeff, that IS a cool story!!

711 I brought a bunch of fish up with me when I moved from Santa Barbara to San Jose (280 miles) -- most of them were in a Coleman cooler.... -cthulhu I just tuned in -- good morning! -- read the above & wondered WTF... oh! Aquarium fish. I was thinking, restocking a pond? Can't get your fave at the local grocer? Yeaah.. think I'll get a cup of coffee....

712 706 RobM1981, Built back when we were a nation worried about getting things done and doing things well. Now if Ogabecare is any indication we take a nice big shit as solution for a task and then say, "happy New Year we er uh ain't ah going back" See care, Obama and the F-35

Posted by: sven10077 at January 05, 2014 03:21 AM (TE35l)

713 I was more worried about keeping them unaerated -- every time I got a standing wave in the damned cooler, a cup of water would end up on my back deck. Couldn't accelerate too fast; couldn't brake too fast; couldn't go slow/fast if it was within the resonance of the water in the cooler. I'd bag 'em if I had to do it over again.

Posted by: cthulhu at January 05, 2014 07:09 AM (T1005)

yeah I can see how you don't want them all splashing out.

but I guess how can it be possible to transport fish over long distances and still keep them in a healthy tank environment with enough oxygen in the water, etc.

I guess this is how you do it:  http://www.wikihow.com/Transport-Fish

714 Uh... from chemjeff's feelgood link... [paragraph begins] a Lincoln lunch and asked the hostess give them her grumpiest server, accord the Lincoln Journal Star. The hostess responded she would seat them with her happiest server. At Table 222, the men asked the 18-year-old Sailors happy. Sailors told them abouting up as the youngestm Falls City, accord the newspaper... [etc] I couldn't continue with that mangled text. WTH?

sometimes they succeed...usually when the store is unoccupied.

A criminal that robs an open for business gun shop is engaged in "a cry for help."

745 they do the same thing with all year hose bibs. The actual valve is inside the building (or below frost line) so that you can have water all year round.

You'll find these in ranches and farms or other outfit that needs water to be accessible year round.

And it's the transportation costs that kill trying to sell used machinery.

It has to be disconnected, gotten out of the building and onto a truck and then driven to it's new location and reinstalled.

Lot of money for 40-60 year old equipment that is little used today.

Cheaper to buy new and more adaptable.
