Michael Barone on All the Things Wrong with Thomas Piketty's Inequality Thesis
He starts with these.
But is his picture of current trends complete? The Manhattan Institute's Scott Winship points out that relying, as Piketty does, on tax returns for the U.S. statistics means omitting income from Social Security, food stamps, public housing, Medicare and Medicaid.Tax returns count roommates and unmarried partners as separate units when they are part of a larger household.
They don't include employer-paid health insurance -- an increasing share of employee compensation in recent decades.
Including these factors, Winship notes, means that incomes below the top 10 percent have not stagnated but have risen significantly since the 1970s. Increasing inequality is compatible with increases in ordinary people's incomes.
Economist Tyler Cowen takes issue with another of Piketty's assumptions, that the rich can earn 4 to 5 percent on their wealth "automatically, with the mere passage of time, rather than as the result of strategic risk taking."
And here's why the 'moderate' MSM/Left's sudden Piketty-driven obsession with inequality may not amount to much politically:
Respondents were not particularly worried about income inequality, which President Obama identified in December as the "defining challenge of our time." Just five percent said that inequality was a major problem needing attention. And nearly all - 93 percent - of those who listed inequality as a problem said they were not at all or only slightly confident that the government could make real progress in addressing inequality in 2014.
Rich Owens: Oklahoma's Official Executioner
From a fascinating 1948 newspaper article on Rich Owens who executed condemned men for over three decades while serving as a guard at Oklahoma's McAlester State Penitentiary. In his life he killed 75 men: 65 by electrocution, one by the gallows, two with a knife, six with a gun and one with a shovel, not counting 'peckerwoods'.
And he took his job very seriously - studying techniques and learning from the failures of others as well as running execution rehearsals beforehand - in order to guarantee a smooth quick death with a minimum of pain, mess, or fuss.
Which leads to his story of how he once executed a friend of his who had raped and killed a girl while drunk. He spent the evening praying with the man in his cell and when the time came he walked him to the electric chair, prepped him, and then pulled the switch himself. Afterwards he gave his executioner's fee ($100) to the man's wife.
Given the in-artful demise of Clayton Lockett on Thursday perhaps it's time for Oklahoma to bring back a professional like Owens.
Retro-Ace: Enough with the Gay Shit
However, if full and unblemished record of lifelong heterosexuality is now, according to lefties, some sort of requirement for reliability, well, it seems Scott Beauchamp's got a whole new credibility problem.I'm so sick of the fucking left. If someone says something they don't like, they just bleat over and over "FAG! FAG! FAG! FAG!"
Well, fuck self-restraint. If that's the game we're playing, then game on.
Democrat Clinton Appointee Strikes Down Wisconsin Voter ID Law
I have read the opinion (.pdf), and, shockingly, it is nonsense. In a nutshell, the judge finds that 1) there ain't no such thing as voter fraud, and 2) obtaining a photo ID is second in difficulty only to scaling Mount Everest.

NJ "Smart" Gun Seller Gets the Wrong Kind of Online Attention
"[Armatrix employee] Belinda Padilla does not pick up unknown calls anymore, not since someone posted her cellphone number on an online forum for gun enthusiasts. Then someone snapped pictures of the address where she has a P.O. box and put those online, too. In a crude, cartoonish scrawl, this person drew an arrow to the blurred image of a woman passing through the photo frame. 'Belinda?" the person wrote. "Is that you?" ... "I have no qualms with the idea of personally and professionally leveling the life of someone who has attempted to profit from disarming me and my fellow Americans," one commenter wrote."
So, so much ignorance in the comments. The larger context is that just by selling a single 'smart' .22 gun in the US Armatrix will effectively eliminate the ability of people in several states to buy any existing guns. Yes they have the right (and incentive) to develop smart guns but thanks to dumbass laws their exercising of this right will eliminate the rights of others to buy a gun of their choice.
Report: 70% of Shootings in Chicago Happen Within a Single Isolated Group
Papachristos constructs a social network-not a virtual one in the Facebook sense, but a real one of social connections between people-by looking at arrestees who have been arrested together. That turns out to be a lot of people in raw numbers, almost 170,000 people with a "co-offending tie" to one another, with an average age of 25.7 years, 78.6 percent male and 69.5 percent black. It's also a large percentage of all the individuals arrested: 40 percent of all the individuals arrested during that period.Within the entire group, the largest component of that whole co-offender group has 107,740 people.
Within the timeframe-from 2006 to 2010-70 percent of all shootings in Chicago, or about 7,500 out of over 10,000, are contained within all the co-offending networks. And 89 percent of those shootings are within the largest component.
If you run the numbers, it turns out that a mere 6% of Chicago's population account for the vast majority of all shootings. Which most people have long believed but it's nice to see it shown in an actual study.
Random Wikipedia Factoid I Encountered While Browsing
Sadly I couldn't find any video of this.
The song Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man details a moderately unpleasant on-air exchange between Emery and Roger McGuinn, the lead singer of the 1960s rock group The Byrds, concerning their 1968 appearance at The Grand Ole Opry. In that performance, the Byrds attempted unsuccessfully to convince traditional country music fans that their developing country rock sound was a legitimate part of the tradition. They were met with jeers and catcalls, in what may be interpreted as a sign of the increasing animosity at the time between rural or working-class (mostly Southern) whites (represented by Opry attendees and Emery's listeners) and young devotees of the counterculture (represented by the Byrds, with their long hair and "hippie" attire). Years later, though, there would be some reconciliation and even convergence of the opposing lifestyles in the "Outlaw" movement, popularized by the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Man Has Stereo Confiscated By Authorities For Playing "My Heart Will Go On" Over And Over
To serve and protect:
Gareth Davies, a 47-year-old resident of Kent County in southeast England, ignored noise complaints from his neighbors, repeatedly breaking a noise abatement notice by blasting Celine Dion's Titanic anthem "My Heart Will Go On" repeatedly. After the sixth violation, Medway Council officers seized all of Davies' possessions that could be used to play Dion's music, including his iPod, speakers, 3D TV and PlayStation. Davies also reportedly has a fondness for blasting the Toy Story theme song, "You've Got A Friend in Me."

1. Put a box on taxes: payments go to "DEFENSE" or "SOCIAL PROGRAMS"
2. Check one box.
3. That is where your tax money goes.
4. Libtards happy they are "helping the downtrodden"
5. Conservatives happy we are protecting the nation.
Everyone wins...
/except when all the libtards start checking "DEFENSE" and not admitting it...

Ft Polk sucks, but there are lots of woods and lots of little trails. Been exploring a little. Got a little carried away today. Pic linked in nick.
I sent her that pic. That's why she's pissed. That's still her baby. I say it's a Jeep and should be driven as such. Might need to put better tires on it. She didn't like that suggestion either.

After Chrysler bought them out, certain things went all to heck at Jeep, including any sense of suitability of tires. I remember looking at one guy's newly bought Grand Cherokee and saying, "Um, these are Eagle GA touring tires. Okay on the highway. You better go turn these in on something heavy duty if you plan to actually go off road."
The guy's wife, later, was not best pleased when they were up at the absolute remotest ass end of a trail later on with THREE popped tires. A full size spare isn't going to solve that problem.
I recall that they had to pay some local kid a ton of money for him to portage in a couple of replacement tires pre-mounted to wheels, one per trip, bungeed on the back of his dirt bike.

I like Tony as a villain. He's definitely been playing everyone and probably making great moves and he's pretty much set to get to at least final 4. I also like Spencer, just because he's definitely trying and willing to make the moves needed especially since being counted out and finished so many times. That Asian guy is ok, but he's just too much of surferduuuude braaaa that I don't really like. I can see Cass and Tony returning as Villains and Spencer returning as Hero.

Yeah. Homer was at some animation festival and he watched a short scene there that had one or the other bombing an abortion clinic--I think the boy with the dog trying to stop him.
It was the later season (10? 12?) that alot of people think was the turning point for the series although other opinions as I recall from Jump The Shark are for the following season.
I only watched intermittently for the rest of that season and wasn't impressed with what followed; and a couple of nonreligious friends (who didn't care about that issue) gave up on the show about 4 or 5 episodes later too so it wasn't just me.
I made the point that they couldn't even write good Halloween shows any more (I tried giving the next several seasons' Halloween specials a try at least) and that was only one freakin' episode a year so how could they not come up with something good for it that they agreed with.

It's a big lake that twists and winds all over the place. For the primary I had to visit the one precinct on the North West side of the lake and it was amazing what a weather buffer that lake is. Down here it had been in the 50s for a day since the last snow but up there they still had ice all over the roads.

My dad was posted at Ft. Polk in the late 60s and apparently it sucked so bad that he got baptized and voluntarily started attending the base church. He swears it was just because the chapel was the only place on base that had air conditioning but we've always suspected that there was more to it.

IMHO it was done when every other episode was a Lisa's liberal cause du jour. It became the Lisa Show. Also, too much backstory for characters that best remained enigmas.

In the UK now, as a taxpayer, you are sent a yearly statement of what your annual cheque to the Inland Revenue actually pays for, broken out in a pie chart for various government functions.
Welfare is the single largest category of expense.
I'd like to see that system adopted here in the States. I'd also like to see withholding done away with, so all the pain happens at once and people actually see just how big the bill is for government. No chance of either, of course.

Democrat Clinton Appointee Strikes Down Wisconsin Voter ID Law
Posted by: Maetenloch
Slight rewrite:
Appointee Unanimously Supported by Senate Republicans Strikes Down Wisconsin Voter ID Law
Because:
Lynn Adelman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a federal trial judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The 58-year-old lawyer and legislator was confirmed without debate or a roll-call vote on the Senate's last day of business in 1997.
Republicans back home such as Gov. Tommy Thompson lobbied Republicans in the U.S. Senate to confirm Adelman, even though Adelman has taken votes and positions in his long legislative career that have drawn fire from GOP opponents. Thompson has said he contacted Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah and other Senate Republicans on Adelman's behalf, but he would not detail the extent of his lobbying.
By all indications, it helped. Adelman's nomination advanced in a relatively short time, and he drew only two negative votes from GOP senators on the Judiciary Committee last week.
His confirmation Thursday was done, along with a good deal of other business, by unanimous consent a common procedure for non-controversial items. The objection of any senator could have held up confirmation. That didn't happen.
So could we please stop with the "Whaa Clinton!: bellyaching of the last few days?

But, my mother's brother married the daughter of the leading Leesville citizen who formed the citizens' committee that sold the idea of the place to the government. He (and quite a few others) did quite well by the deal; he left his car dealership and pulpwood holdings to my uncle (The Colonel, they called him in town). A good number of his brother officers retired to Leesville for its pleasant social scene. So, somebody liked it.
Milton talked about the mind making its own Heaven and Hell. I've known people who enjoyed their time at Loring and Minot. Anybody hate Ft Sill? An old boss of mine married (late in life, after long widowhood) a retiring Warrant Officer, and they moved to the retirement colony there. She thought it a paradise.

Nope, AT&T. Also, if I go directly to www.dayom.com I can browse around the site and go to any of the links I click. I thought I would try browsing to the same page through one of their links, but they don't have a search function, and I don't want to spend all night trying to find that particular babe.
I don't think it is my ISP, as the 403 error would be generated by the site's servers. Don't know why they won't serve me that page directly, but will give it up if I go through Hide My Ass.

Any last words? "Squeek, squeek, squeek."
Nitrogen would work as well, and is even cheaper. The condemned person would simply doze off and not wake up.

Uhhh.... why don't States just use an Air chamber filled with helium for the Death Penalty?
Its sure... painless... cheep... and really easily done.

I could easily visualize an execution chamber -- prisoner is taken inside, put in a chair, restrained, attached to monitoring devices. Chamber then sealed. Sentence read, restraints fall away, nitrogen feed started into chamber. Exhaust from chamber channeled to small compartment where a candle is lit. Nitrogen level displayed -- 78%, then 79, then 80...
About 95%, condemned prisoner sags and flatlines....at about 97%, candle goes out.

I'd rather they were dispatched. According to Wikipedia, California has 733 inmates on Death Row. It doesn't take much imagination to understand the accumulated depravity involved.

In all seriousness, if you are going to put criminals to death, do like China does, and shoot them in the back of the head with a pistol. No muss, no fuss, and the round only costs about 50 cents. Which you bill the perp's family for, anyway. Why spend thousands and thousands of dollars on elaborate "execution theater", when a bullet gets the job done, quickly and painlessly? And pistols are already in inventory at any prison.
This lethal injection fad is a crock of shit. All it does is slander medical personnel who have to give injections to people to SAVE their life, while they are lying on a gurney, even. The process of killing should not bear any resemblance to a medical procedure.

The great majority of this BS is from activists attempting to backdoor an end to the death penalty.....but I'm willing to go along to a point. The fact is that continued living is a bit of a wonder -- and that there are a whole lot of ways to end up outside the "continued living" envelope. Helping people understand this might serve other purposes than efficiently removing miscreants from the public sphere.
IIRC, there was a SF story where the condemned was ushered into a room and shown a video of his "parole hearing", which seemed to go very well for him. At the end of this, he was told that he was free to go through an exit to the outside.
Thing was, if the ACTUAL parole hearing hadn't gone all that well, the doorknob was wired to 60,000 volts. But the condemned man would reach for and grab the doorknob with a song in his heart, thinking he'd gotten off.

A Twitter message by someone who pretends to be God somehow caught the European mood. From @TheTweetOfGod: “How could Oklahoma botch an execution? If there’s one thing I would expect Americans to know how to do by now, it’s kill somebody.”

Wiki says it is dying out. I do not believe so. Most of the community I live in speaks it and so do most people and the Mennonite Church in Urbana speak it.

You are correct of course. The rest of the world looks on and notices that the promises of the US are worth less than the air the politicos breathe to speak them.

The Internetz say its in McLean, 15 miles south of Bloomington. Good reason to call it McLean Depot, I guess. Chicago Burlington and Quincy country (precursor to the Burlington Northern, now part of the BNSF).

If you want a shocking story about an professional executioner, though (pun intended), look up Stanley Ellin's "The Question My Son Asked" from Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine the 1960s. It is truly a story you will never forget.

I did two years there as a support contractor after the Army, where I had visited there four times for JRTC rehearsals. I never want to go back.
