Here some of the current bills that have been introduced:

Apollo Lunar Landing Legacy Act: Would establish the Apollo Lunar Landing Sites National Historical Park on the moon. - Chief sponsor Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.)

Read the Bills Act: Would require legislation to be posted online one week before it comes up for a vote. The House version, sponsored by two Republicans, would exempt declarations of war. The Senate version, sponsored by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), would require that lawmakers sign an affidavit, under penalty of perjury, attesting that they "attentively" read the measure or were present throughout the entire reading. They do not have to sign the affidavit if they vote against the bill. - House Bill's chief sponsor Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.)

Department of Peacebuilding Act: Would establish a Cabinet-level federal department, headed by the secretary of Peacebuilding, dedicated to reducing violence domestically and internationally. - Chief Sponsor Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland)

(The idea of a Department of Peace had been championed for more than a decade by then-Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio).

District of Columbia-Maryland Reunion Act: Would address the District of Columbia's long-standing grievance over lack of representation in Congress by turning over the district to Maryland except for a "National Capital Service Area" that includes the Capitol, the White House and monuments on the National Mall.

SPA Act: Would prohibit the operation of the House gym during a government shutdown. The Shutdown Prioritization Act was introduced during the 16-day federal government shutdown in October.

OK, two comments. While Joe Biden's candidacy is, of course, already a joke - and, rest assured, he wants the job - it is a measure of just how much trouble the Democrats are in right now for 2016 that he and the other very-old-for-the-job person with public neurological issues (Hillary Clinton, for those following along at home) are the best choices that that party has. Although I suppose that Elizabeth Warren at least looks like a little better as a choice, seeing as she'd 'only' be 67 in 2016 and does not have blood clots or a family history of strokes.

.As far as I know.  Anyway, joke or not Joe Biden still has a remarkably non-trivial shot at winning the nomination.  Which would, as I have noted before, be absolutely great.

Remembering the 8-Track and Why It Failed

WHEN eight-track tapes hit the shelves in the latter part of the Sixties, it was seen as a godsend.  All of a sudden, you could listen to your music collection in your car, or out-and-about with the new boom-boxes.  There were even rumors it would completely replace the vinyl record.  Yet, just over a decade later, the humble cassette tape was able to drive it to extinction.  Its heyday lasted from 1968-1975, and by 1980 the poor eight-track was in history's dustbin, a sort-of laughable derelict from the Seventies.

So what happened? Here are 8 reasons for its untimely demise.

Well not being able to rewind and being flimsy and unreliable were probably enough.

The primary reason the eight-track became extinct was because it was an unreliable piece of shit.  They simply weren't built to last and subsequently earned a reputation as being ticking time bombs.  Truth be told, brand new eight-tracks often sounded good, and the tapes themselves were virtually indestructible: they never melted in the sun or cracked.  It was the internal components that started to fall to pieces over time.  If the manufacturers hadn't opted for cheap construction, things might have turned out differently.

40 8 tracks...I just resurrected the stereo I picked up in Germany in 74. 8 tracks were already gone and cassettes and reel to reel were the hot things. Probably never see anything on tape again. Because it was bogus - there was a real Arab traveler with the name of Crichton's hero that Crichton took some details from, but the story itself is a complete fabrication. It is a really bad retelling of Beowulf, as a matter of fact, and easily spotted as a modern tale by anyone with some knowledge of early Medieval history and culture. "Vendel," for example, is the name of a archeological site in Sweden that has given its name to a pre-Viking culture that buried their kings there in the 700s.

63 I'm just old enough to recall 8-tracks being sold in stores but my parents didn't have a functional 8-track player; so, it was vinyl and cassettes for me. I did have bad luck with multiple pre-recorded cassettes due to manufacturers using extremely shitty quality tape.

If you're not present for the entire reading, you don't get to vote. Should prevent people from claiming they didn't needed to pass a law to find out what was in it. I meant that Crichton was quite deliberately retelling "Beowulf" - he and a friend were arguing about whether the poem was a boring story or whether it was a good story told really poorly. Crichton favored the latter view, and wrote the book to prove his point. The problem, apart from the fact that both of them were apparently unable to appreciate the original poem as anything but an adventure story, was that Crichton used the name of a real Arab traveler that left an account of Rus' (not necessarily Vikings!) and made it look like he was working off an original document. Basically, it is equivalent to writing a story about an "Abraham Lincoln" who wrote an account of fighting zombies during the 19th century and using quotes from the Gettyburg Address throughout the story to lend verisimilitude - there was a real Lincoln and a real Gettysburg Address, but story is a complete fiction.

So he tells a couple of jokes, to a predictable response from the Blondes and a tepid, nervous response from the brunette females and all the males who also happened to be in that very enclosed space in the shuttle bus. The bus driver chuckles to himself and says "I'll be here all week!" From the back of the bus, I pipe up: "Well, we won't!" Biggest laugh line of the night.

Gunbroker is basically ebay for guns and guns stuff, with the exception that "sniping" doesn't work (because the auction won't close for fifteen minutes after the last bid) and that payments don't go through gunbroker at all - it is up to you to get the money, usually a money order, to the seller and negotiate the paperwork and regulations to get the gun to your location. Gunbroker just sets up the deal, the rest is up to the principle. They do have ways of resolving disputes, but I haven't had to deal with that. I have bought a gun and a couple sets of stripper clips off gunbroker, and am expecting another gun to arrive at the local FFL people sometime this week. I really haven't had any problems so far.

He had no job, had never had a job, and lived off money his dad (who worked in the oil patch in Libya, pre-Gaddafi) sent him. Actually, that's not completely true, he had worked at a lumber yard for part of 1 day.

When I said something to my sister in law about the employer mandate being delayed until 2016, she said, "Well, don't you think that if a Republican gets elected they will do away with Obamacare?" I almost fell over. This is one of the most liberal people I know and she sounds like she wants a republican to get elected so that Obamacare can be dissolved.

188 The problem with 8 tracks, is that they were endless loops. As the tape played, the tape was pulled out of the center of the 'pancake'. Not something that led to reliability. Very similar 'carts' were used by radio stations for years for commercial spots.

As an aside, the first cassettes were not 'compact cassettes' as most came to know them, but these

189 'Zup, Horde? My dad still has about a hundred 8-tracks, although his last player quit a few years back. When I first started in radio, I was surprised to learn that commercials (and sometimes music) were recorded onto cartridges that were a lot like 8 tracks. They were just two tracks, and had a cue tone reader that stopped the tape back at the beginning. Like 8-tracks, they could be very unreliable, depending on the manufacturer. I haven't seen one of those cartridges in over 10 years. One more thing for you praying people...could you please send up one for my hometown in the Texas Panhandle? My sister told me there's a huge wildfire that has already taken some homes in the town. My mom and dad still live there. Thanks, y'all. Going back to lurking.

I don't think he was re-telling it as much as re-imagining it as if it might have been true.  I have read Beowulf in several translations, and find Crichton's version to be a plausible and enjoyable alternative.  For straight translations, however, Heaney is the best.

405 8 tracks also sucked because they would cut songs off in the middle to change tracks, and then when they restarted they often replayed part of the song that I just fucking heard.  Like 10-20 seconds of the song that I just fucking heard.  They also reordered the songs from the albums.  I didn't know that Abbey Road begins with "Come Together," not "Here Comes the Sun," until I was 35.
