Quote of the Day I

"But regardless of your background, regardless of the history they have, if we're taking something somebody said in their home and we're trying to turn it into something that leads to you being forced to divest property in any way, shape or form, that's not the United States of America. I don't want to be part of that."

-- Mark Cuban

Quote of the Day II - On the Nerd Prom AKA the White House Correspondent's Dinner

"The correspondent's dinner was a thoroughly medieval spectacle. Never was a lord's hall so earnestly thronged by grateful peasants as that venue. The comparison was nearly exact since it featured jesters, court ladies and the obligatory men-at-arms hovering outside the drawbridge of the castle. Royalty was of course in attendance, resplendent in its dazzling gowns and chic elegance. The designated buffoon of the evening was Kathleen Sebelius who was employed as a sight-gag as an obligatory adjunct to something broken as if she could absorb for herself the sins of the King."

Thought Policing Comes to the Sports Leagues

Cuban's point, though, is a valid one. It is, as he says, a "slippery slope" for NBA owners-or the owners of any sports franchise-to decide who should be able to enter their club based on the righteousness of their thinking, because who is to determine what is righteous?

As if to prove Cuban's point, Esquire's four-eyed, multi-chinned, monomaniacal hack in residence, Charles P. Pierce, took to the digital pages of his glorified lad mag to call for Adam Silver to enact similar sanctions on the owner of the Orlando Magic. His thought crime? Opposing same sex marriage. Note: The owners of the Magic have not been accused of, say, banning gay people from the arena or making them uncomfortable at games. Simply engaging in the political process in a wholly legal manner is enough for Pierce to call for their defenestration.

Similarly, Washington, D.C.'s fake congresswoman, Eleanor Holmes Norton, issued a call for Roger Goodell to sanction the owner of the Washington Redskins for profiting off of racism. Ace has handled the idiocy of referring to the name "Redskins" as racism better than I can; allow me to simply note that this only helps prove the NBA owners are setting a dangerous precedent if they vote to strip Donald Sterling of his property for saying offensive things and holding offensive thoughts

VDH: Who Among Us is Pure Enough to Own the Clippers?

Certainly not some of Sterling's more vocal critics.

Then there is the issue of the nature of Sterling's more direct stone throwers. After Sterling's ostracism, which of them can and cannot buy a NBA or equivalent sports franchise? Perhaps Spike Lee, who has appeared in NBA-affiliated commercials?

But Mr. Lee has made it clear that the very sight of interracial couples offends him. So do white moms in strollers in formerly black neighborhoods ("When you see white mothers pushing their babies in strollers."). Lee not long ago tweeted the wrong address of George Zimmerman's parents, in a failed crude effort to incite mob violence against his family-which resulted in threats to a completely different Zimmerman family and a law suit. After visiting South Africa, Lee thundered, "I seriously wanted to pick up a gun and shoot whites. The only way to resolve matters is by bloodshed." Should Lee be blacklisted from NBA games and his NBA commercial work dropped? Is publicly advocating racial violence worse than privately expressing racist ideas?

Charles Barkley (of the NBA:  "we are a black league") has also weighed in. Could Mr. Barkley join an effort to buy the Clippers? Unlike Sterling, his racist outbursts are a bit more direct ("That's why I hate white people") and were not private. Was that a joke or just letting off steam?

Perhaps Shaquille O'Neal could head a consortium to purchase the Clippers? But O'Neill just posted a tasteless video of himself mocking someone suffering from a disfiguring illness. But that was not new, given that not too long ago he parodied NBA star Yao Ming's Chinese ancestry.

Black Christian Minister May Lose his Day Job in California Because of his Sermons

Pasadena city officials placed Public Health Director Eric Walsh on temporary paid administrative leave Thursday after they learned of controversial statements he had made about homosexuality and evolution in online videos and audio clips.

...Students for Social Justice found some of Walsh's videos online.

"We very quickly realized that there were a lot of communities that would be offended by Dr. Walsh," said Sarah Belknap, a fourth-year student and member of Students for Social Justice.
The group compiled a list of Walsh's controversial public statements, then published excerpts on Facebook and emailed them to media outlets.

Is The DOJ's 'Operation Choke Point' Causing the Closing of Porn Star Bank Accounts?

But porn stars are just the most visible victims. Already gun retailers are having a hard time getting credit card companies to do business with them. Now they may not even be able to open bank accounts.

Under "Operation Choke Point," the DOJ and its allies are going after legal but subjectively undesirable business ventures by pressuring banks to terminate their bank accounts or refuse their business. The very premise is clearly chilling-the DOJ is coercing private businesses in an attempt to centrally engineer the American marketplace based on it's own politically biased moral judgements. Targeted business categories so far have included payday lenders, ammunition sales, dating services, purveyors of drug paraphernalia, and online gambling sites. "Operation Chokepoint is flooding payments companies that provide processing service to those industries with subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and other burdensome and costly legal demands," wrote Jason Oxman, CEO of the Electronic Transactions Association, at The Hill.

Oh and the government also wants to monitor your investment accounts. For your own safety citizen.

In December, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, which oversees how investments are sold, proposed what it calls Cards, an electronic system that would regularly collect data on balances and transactions in brokerage accounts...

Under Cards (which stands for Comprehensive Automated Risk Data System), Finra would collect-probably weekly-a record of activity at all of the more than 4,100 brokerage firms nationwide.

Finra would scour the data continuously, looking for any hints that a firm or a broker might be taking advantage of a client: excessive trading or commissions, switching from one mutual fund to another, overcharging for bond E*TradeETFC +0.04%s, overconcentrating in risky or illiquid securities, and so on.

Cards "would provide us with a treasure trove of information and the ability to focus quicker on firms that are placing investors at high risk," Richard Ketchum, Finra's chairman and chief executive, said in an interview.

The Party Of Science Has Absolutely No Clue What It's Talking About

Democrats love to pat themselves on the back as believers in science and rational inquiry as opposed to the anti-science knuckle-dragging superstitious right. But when it comes to applying scientific methods and analyzing data on the effectiveness of policy policy, it all falls away before the One True Religion of progressivism.

For decades, a series of studies have raised red flags. Surgery patients, cancer victims, and transplant recipients who were enrolled in the program were all found to fare worse-not merely than privately-insured patients with presumably easier lives, but worse than equally poor people who lacked any insurance at all. This literature was capped off by the landmark "Oregon study," a brand-new analysis that marshals gold-standard methodology to compare Medicaid recipients with uninsured people.

The scholars found mixed results. Medicaid does lower psychological stress and increase financial stability, results we would expect from any transfer program. But the program actually increases unnecessary trips to the emergency room. And remarkably, Medicaid coverage has no measurable impact whatsoever on clinical health.

To an intellectually honest observer, these findings compel more questions. What are reasonable expectations for health insurance? Should we be satisfied if Medicaid helps people sleep easier but makes them no healthier? Even if so, is health insurance the most effective way to convert taxpayer dollars into peace of mind for the poor?

But no person on the left will ask these questions or even accept them as legitimate ones.

The theoretical physicist Richard Feynman once quipped that "the first principle" of science is "that you must not fool yourself-and you are the easiest person to fool." If we take the genius at his word, "the party of science" starts to look like a paradox. To insist that only your ideology is empirical and enlightened is to conclusively prove that it is neither.

Slate: The Autistic Boy Was Fair Game

Granted the 16 year old boy likely has Asperger's which means he wasn't completely helpless but then there's no question the two high school girls took advantage of and abused him - albeit with his consent. Should they be prosecuted and face jail (possibly decades for the 17 year cheerleader)? No, but they should have some consequences. And what they did was still wrong.

Troopers

Because it's Star Wars day. This video is at least 15 years old but still awesome even if they had to change the theme song. I still laugh when the jawas catch on fire.

Nuts Magazine RIP

Nuts started as a print and then online lads magazine in the U.K. just about a decade ago. In that time, it's hard to count on hands and toes and other appendages how many fine looking topless lasses they've brought to our attention. Now, they are closing shop. Online and off. It's a melancholy moment for those 99.9% of us who love funbags.

It might not be common knowledge, but it's very economically difficult to run an R-rated journalistic endeavor. You're too racy for Victorian era corporate advertisers but you're not racy enough for people willing to spend money for their passions. It's the nightmare that keeps me awake at night, before I have some warm beer and ease back into slumber. We will miss Nuts. They were good, earnest, boobtastic loving folks. Of course, the glamour models will continue on in other venues, but as with any loss, things will not be entirely the same forever more.

Warning: Link is NSFW. Because boobs.

19 I'll repeat my comment from a few days ago about owning an NBA team, or any sports team these days. You don't actually own the team, the league does. What you own is the license for the team. Just like you don't ever actually own software from Microsoft, just a license to use it. Anybody thinking about "buying" any major league franchise really needs to read the EULA first.

54 "Under 'Operation Choke Point,' the DOJ and its allies are going after legal but subjectively undesirable business ventures by pressuring banks to terminate their bank accounts or refuse their business."

Building upon the previous success of the Community Reinvestment Act, wherein banks were told by the feds that they would lose their licenses if they did not greatly increase their mortgage lending to ethnic buyers with lousy credit.

But, that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would then promptly buy up all of the resultant risky paper and stamp it with a big cheery "Guaranteed by Uncle Sam" logo.

This turned out to be quite popular with the banks. All of the upside, none of the downside. Until these huge tranches of toxic mortgages exploded and sank the entire economy with them.

Then, of course, the banks yelled for federal bailouts, and got them. The rest of us who had nothing to do with this nonsense then got stuck with a huge bill which we are still paying off, and will be paying off for decades to come.

irongrandpa.......  whole lotta that pushback ain't likely to be just figurative, y'know.

I pray though, that our system will work, and that conservative individuals continue to drive the system from below.

Screw any national "tea party" organization.  Soon as they claim that they are, they prove by that same claim, that they're not.

Tea party is just us folks.  Plenty of Morons amongst 'em.  Our job is to make more of us. Persuading, convincing, arguing and proving.....

What I do, is get folks out to the range.  Hard for 'em to keep hating on us, when they can't wipe the silly grin offa their faces!

That happens, then they tend to start paying attention to other points of logic I feed 'em.  Doesn't take long before their desire for more fun at the range outweighs their adherence to the lies they've been fed.

Fun for them, to come into the shooting world.  Fun for me, to make converts to the cause.

I think there are about 450 now. It's still not a huge amount. And we're not totally positive -- but are reasonably sure -- it was flying parallel to the freeway and descending, so I caught a ginormous black bird with a white blob on the underside in the half-second before it descended to our level, and the BH noted the pink head on the huge bird that I pointed out to her before we passed. We were somewhat south of San Jose, and they are releasing them at Pinnacles National Monument, which is 80 miles south. So it's plausible that one came up far enough for us to see it.

I remember the Ivory-Headed Woodpecker thing....and used to think, "well, duh -- don't you know???" But I've lately gained a better appreciation for eastern swamps.

You mean, if you have a business that is on 'The List'?

Well credit unions can do anything that a 'major bank' can do.

But if they tell Holder to fuck off...then their ability to wire funds across state lines may be restricted as a result.

Businesses that are on 'The List' will have to do their deposits at small banks that are willing to defy Holder.

Then...they can create dummy corps, to establish accounts under and transfer their funds to, at larger banks, I guess.

He said he'd never witnessed anything like it in that area and had only seen one as a merchant marine.

135 This weekend I visited a friend who built a really nice house on top of a mountain in the Sierra foothills. Really did a great job with it. He has a private road that goes about 2 miles to his house, on 30 acres.

It was stark up there. Probably a good place for the zombie apocalypse.

Except for being in CA., that is.

Posted by: navybrat at May 04, 2014 11:34 PM (JgC5a)

That's interesting.  I manage the maintenance of a 1.6 mile private road, and the annual cost is about $10K per year, between grading, graveling and asphalting.  If it was all gravel, instead of partially paved, I'm guessing the total would still be around $8K per year.

Don't think the zombies will manage to shamble as far as the Sierra foothills, however.  So there's that.

We haven't seen a mountain lion, but we saw a deer carcass from one on a trail at Sanborn. It had been reported to rangers, and they confirmed the kill and were moving it away from the trail.

We've also been off in Sanborn when we heard what sounded like the rattling sound an African lion makes when he wants it to be known that he's in the neighborhood -- like at 0:07 of http://tinyurl.com/otpax82. 176 "I don't think Freeman Dyson would push that kind of crap."

Freeman Dyson is made of tough stuff.

He is an implacable critic of theoretical models which do not match up to the real world. And he came by that habit honestly.

You can find in odd corners of the Web some articles and interviews by Dyson wherein he talks about, as a young boffin in the UK during WWII, being detailed to Bomber Command as a statistician.

And telling the story of how he learned from the figures that the escape hatches in the bombers were too small. Aircrew trying to bail out from fatally hit bombers over Europe were hanging up in the exit. It would have been quite simple and cheap to enlarge the hatches, for which he argued.

No one would pay any attention to him. There are many names engraved on wartime memorial plinths which would have not been there if someone had done so.

Aircrew trying to bail out from fatally hit bombers over Europe were hanging up in the exit. It would have been quite simple and cheap to enlarge the hatches, for which he argued. The Mosquito had the same tiny belly hatch, and the Brit parachutists were taught to look up when jumping in order to clear the hatch rim. Yes. Although, the majority of insertions of OSS and SOE operators into occupied Europe were not done at high altitude via Mosquito, but via low altitude in the dark, in obsolete Lysanders. Mosquitoes were in demand as pathfinders for bomber streams.

You can imagine how much fun that was, spotting a dimly lit impromptu airfield in rural France in the middle of the night, wondering if your welcoming committee were going to be the Maquis or the Gestapo.

I grew up in the West and have never ever had the privilege of hearing a wild rattler do its thing. I've seen them many a time now but have never gotten the sound.

A friend of mine, similarly situated, had his first experience of the sound while halfway up a two thousand foot rock face in the Sierra Nevada. Reached up for a handhold, heard the unmistakable warning buzz, pulled his hand back down, and realized that there was no alternative route around the ledge which the snake had staked out. Fun!

Fun!

I've lived out here for all of my 51 years, and I've only seen a few rattlers -- all within the last couple of years....and none of them have rattled. I've probably seen more California Kingsnakes (which are gorgeous, BTW -- .http://tinyurl.com/mnbxucx ).

276 And thanks to CQD, of course cthulhu, and anyone else I missed that mentioned the doggeh meds - I truly appreciate it. Snakes? Last summer, the ex & I took the kids t my niece's wedding... on the trip back home, I demanded that we stop to do a little sightseeing. We ended up hiking on some trails at Kerr Dam. kids were running ahead of us (of course), & 30' behind, I came across a copperhead on the trail - yeah, they had run right over top of it. I just about shit myself. Luckily, the ex didn't know how bad that could've been.

One of my rattlesnake encounters -- we were out hiking with our godsons, and the oldest was in one of those pissy, "not grokking with the old farts" deals and had been running backwards down this road to goof off. I was following with the younger godson, and the BH was bringing up the rear a couple of paces behind. When I saw the snake, I went to stop the godson from walking into it (his quote, later: "it was like walking into a wall"), and then I investigated more cautiously while the BH caught up and we called for the older godson to come back.

There was no doubt whatsoever that it was a rattlesnake, and horsing around like running backwards down the road could well have had the #1 godson stepping directly on it....I'm kind of surprised he didn't.

Snakes. Lots and lots of snakes.

But, on a lighter note -- how goes with you? You had this gig correcting standard exams, you've got the classes, you've got the house.....but you haven't been around (on the ONT) that much, so it's not current. How the hell are you?

I'd been hearing possums rustling through the fall leaves all day, so I didn't think twice when I heard something crunching down the hill toward me. ... Until six feet of rattlesnake slid down the last bit of hill and landed between my feet. Incidentally, it is not true that humans can't levitate. I distinctly remember looking down on the roof of the truck before coming down in the truck bed.

Going off into some private obsession isn't necessarily a better/worse thing. I was really looking at how you're doing without being judgmental. How's the house? Are you happy with the way it's fixed up? Have you started sweeping out the winter and planting the spring? You've had your latest batch of victims for a while -- any of 'em show promise? Are you particularly proud of what they've accomplished this term? How are your fish? Have you figured out some patsy that you can pawn some off on?

You've been away for awhile, but fondly remembered. How are you? Whassup?

I don't know the rules for copperheads. For rattlesnakes, the basic rule is that the TINY ones can't get through your boot. The SMALL ones will get into you and empty their poison sacs....which is very, very, very bad. The ADULT ones will hit you and put it into deep tissue [not good]....but will do a "dry bite" about 1/3 of the time. A lot of it also has to do with the nature of the venom -- rattlesnake venom is hemotoxic, and is totally horrific.....but actually "cleans up" amazingly well [HUGE HINT -- if you're bit by a rattlesnake, REMOVE ALL JEWELRY. If it gets you on an arm and you're wearing a ring, it will very likely cause a huge blood-blister that will kill that finger.....where medical treatment can result in a huge puffed-out blistery arm without a ring returning to normal with no significant scars.].

Coral snakes, by contrast, are more closely related to cobras and are neurotoxic. It doesn't cause flesh-eating blisters, it shuts you down.

304 Most American snakebites are not fatal, they're downright pikers in terms of absolute mortality figures compared to bees and wasps. The last one will eat your ass, whole.

Well, I would have moved already were it not for the fiancee (long story). It's not necessarily NC, BTW, but it's outta here. We just did a ramble through the low country, including Savannah and Charleston -- which I welcomed for the opportunity to get the infamous New Yorker cover ( http://tinyurl.com/oeycvfy ) out of her mind (she grew up in NYC).

Wasn't your house "bought new" from the developer? You might be able to stick him with the roof leaks. Bare spots in lawns are easy -- if it's totally bare and large, cut out some space and lay a little sod....if it's threadbare, just overseed it repeatedly at intervals of about a month.

How did your mower break? If the blade broke, it's easier to get a new blade.

To begin with, I can hear and understand the situation in which you find yourself. I have some rough understanding of the pain you're feeling -- having called for a police "welfare check" a couple of times, lately....with neither being completely successful.

I do not have the history, so I cannot really help very much in getting you through tonight.....but I have a strong recommendation for when the crisis resolves -- seek help, but not for your son.....for you. Because there is a significant possibility that "tough love" may be working with your son, and there is a significant possibility that the help he's getting is just what he needs, and there is a significant possibility that he may be beyond help......but there is a near certainty that this has been grinding away on you and that you are not beyond help, needing "tough love", or getting the help you need.

You will need to be confident, strong, and comforting to reach out and pull your son back from the brink, so it would well behoove you to get a coach and train for that moment.

Your reference to "biannual kill myself routine" makes me very hesitant to step in and second-guess things. But it is not shameful to err on the side of caution. I called for a "welfare check" on my friend Joffen a little over three months ago, and the Niagara Falls Police Department found his body just a bit too late.

333 Frak FCF belly up to the bar.  Pretty sure someone can shove through a USB port a Zombie for you.  Or a Pat O Hurricane.

Sounds like you really need to just talk, seems things are very bottled up and you are about to pop.

334 I have an irish coffee so I will stay out of my usb port but the offer is appreciated! is it forbidden to dig back into topics?

336 Depends upon the topics.  Longbows vs crossbows have left many moldering in the graves.  Ditto the Civil War aka War of Northern Aggression.  Then there is the eternal question of 'can there be too much bacon on something?'

Don't apologize!!!!

It's only painful to us if we can't make things better.

And, while I'm crossing t's.....may the good Lord look upon the son of our companion FCF, and heal him from the wrongness in his thoughts and behavior that yoke him with such awful medications; and, further, may FCF find temporal and spiritual support and counsel to guide him through these difficult times.

I've still got the bug bites from visiting Fort Sumter....moving Federal forces there from Fort Moultrie was absolutely and obviously aggressive, and caused Fort Sumter to be shelled....after which, it was surrendered with no loss of life and all personnel were shipped north (along with the flag).

To put this in modern terms -- is it not Russian aggression when Russian troops take over Ukranian government buildings without firing a shot?

Posted by: cthulhu at May 05, 2014 12:36 AM (T1005)

348 I look at this way. The Civil War is the one war where both sides deserved to lose.

Slavery was an evil that needed to end. It would of ended war or not. Economics dictated it. Slavery could not compete with machinery.

Lincoln was the "tfg" of his time. He believed in big government. Having been born and raised less than 50 miles from New Salem, even though I was home schooled, I got a very large dose of how great Lincoln.

After having got interested in him and started reading his writings from even before he became a politician, It was not hard to understand that he thought gob'mint was a cure to all problems.

350 It all depends on your point of view. You start firing cannon balls at me I might just think you are hostile.

Who did Fort Sumter belong to? The Federal Government or the state of South Carolina.

If you want to argue legality, clearly under the Constitution the Fort was Federal property.

Posted by: GMB (et al) at May 05, 2014 12:42 AM (nkPV9)

351 Now you have to ask the question whether or not the State of South Carolina was under under the jurisdiction of the Constitution at the time. Was it legally bound to it.

For Fort Sumter to become Federal Property the State had to agree to the sale of the Land to the Federal Government. Did succession automatically return ownership of Fort Sumter to South Carolina? Did South Carolina offer to return the monies  it received for the sale of the land?

To my knowledge, they did not.

352 I have watched this argument played out. Nobody was right, but thanks be there are still enduring charms of that era ongoing. Pretty sure noone says that about new england.

Yup -- Article I -- "and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings".

But moving from Moultrie to Sumter and attempting to resupply precipitated the crisis.

Posted by: cthulhu at May 05, 2014 12:52 AM (T1005)

356 I am looking at this more than a bit dis passionately. I have no love for either side in this conflict.

As I said, both sides deserved to lose.

Just playing the argument for the arguments sake.

"But moving from Moultrie to Sumter and attempting to resupply precipitated the crisis."

How does moving from one Federal property to another Federal property give anyone the right to start shooting?

You feel threatened by it? That's the argument the progtards are using to make guns evil.

Inho.

Even though born and raised in California, I can recognize some of the occasions when "ma'am" might be appropriate.

And, I might add, I think so "poorly" of the culture of the South that I'm seeking to relocate there in short order.....and certainly not to contaminate it with any hint of the idiocies that I am fleeing.

360 Had the South Carolina Militia not fired on Fort Sumter, I think things might have turned out a bit differently.

First off, it would of forced lincolns hand. He would have to had fired the first shot. It would have been a real war of agression.

I think this would have led to recognition of the Confederate Government by France and England.

Posted by: GMB (et al) at May 05, 2014 01:01 AM (nkPV9)

361 Recognition would have, again, IMO, have brought the British Navy into the Confederate Coastal waters to protect cotton shipments. Eventually I think France would have joined the Naval war.

With kind of protection, I think the war would have been over in less than six months.

The Federals would never had been able to do much about matching the combined French and British fleets.

With over sees trade not in jeopardy, IMO, they would have won.

You're missing quite a bit of context -- several states had seceded, and the properties and facilities of the US within the state had been peacefully rolled back to the states involved.

Further, there was the symbolism of Charleston Harbor -- South Carolina being the center of the Snow Campaign that touched off the Revolutionary War......

Posted by: cthulhu at May 05, 2014 01:15 AM (T1005)

363 Funny, I don't think I'd ever heard of the Snow Campaign before in any of my history courses or textbooks, including AP History...

By who? The States that had succeeded? Was the transfer agreed to by the Federals? Was the monies for the sale of the land returned?

The Federal gub'mint never recognized the right to succession, why would the recognize the return of Federal facilities?

375 Get used to the new normal. The brief interregnum of liberty is over. Of course people should be harassed, silenced and fired for failure to conform to Leftist mores. For what else is Leftism? How can tyranny be imposed if not by mass spectacle and public punishment for crimethink?

376 One True Religion of Progressivism vs the One True Religion of Conservatism. Neither of whom pay a helluva lot of attention to The Constitution....or to the Founder's ideas of constitutional construction. The purity of their respective faiths is all that matters to them. Everyone else is a heretic and must be 'purified' or converted, but only after confessing their sins and guilt. Even that might not be enough. They must be punished and cleansed and every evil thought must be purged, by fire, if necessary. The Inquisition continues.
