Overnight Open Thread (5-5-2014)
— Maetenloch

Well due to internet issues tonight all you get is ONT helper. And ONT helper does just fine by itself.

What Does It Feel Like to be Stupid?

I  had an arterial problem for a couple of years, which reduced blood supply to my heart and brain and depleted B vitamins from my nerves (to keep the heart in good repair). Although there is some vagueness as to the mechanisms, this made me forgetful, slow, and easily overwhelmed. In short, I felt like I was stupid compared to what I was used to, and I was.
However, once I got used to it and resigned myself, it was great. Even though I knew I had a worrying illness, I was happy as a pig in mud. I no longer had the arrogance of being frustrated with slow people, I abandoned many projects which reduced a lot of stress, I could enjoy films without knowing what would happen (my nickname before this used to be 'comic book guy' if you get the reference), and I became amazingly laid back and happy go lucky. I got on with people much better. I developed much more respect for one of my friends in particular who I always considered slow - it turned out he is much deeper than I thought, I just never had the patience to notice before. You could say I had more time to look around. The world just made more sense. The only negative, apart from struggling to perform at work, and having to write everything down, was that I no longer found sci-fi interesting - it just didn't seem important. (I'm not joking, although it sounds like a cliché.)
After a year or so I am almost as 'clever' as I used to be, although I tend to ignore distractions more than I used to and focus on a smaller number of projects. I'm still more laid back than I used to be though, and have more patience with people. Most people still find me more socially competent. I also enjoy sci-fi again.

Of Course Joe Biden Will Run in 2016

The point here isn't just that the thumbnail profile of Biden as a "happy warrior" who can't conceive of life outside of politics is true. It's that Biden truly believes he should be president. Biden didn't run in 2008 simply because he wanted the big desk in the Oval Office. He thought Americans deserved one last chance to do the right thing and make him president, as he thought they should have done in 1988. The fact that they didn't was, in his estimation, their mistake, not his.

Joe Biden: Obama Gave Me 'Every S*** Job In The World'

This story doesn't need a set-up. Just enjoy it. Well, except for the part where Biden supposedly gets the last word with Obama. The man has been wrong on just about every foreign policy issue over the last 30 years. When his input isn't ludicrous, it's dangerous.

Then and Now

Being on the left means never being wrong. Or sorry.

Just as I was never told as a child that Lee Harvey Oswald was a communist stooge who defected to the USSR, the next generation won't know that the 9/11 hijackers were hot for Jihad unless someone tells them

And pretty soon we won't be able to talk about the attacks of September 11th either, not unless we feign amnesia about who did it and why. It will be one of those things that only old screwballs talk about.

...Never did I imagine that it would be controversial to say that Muslims attacked us on 9/11. How did we arrive here?

What appears to be happening now is a concerted effort to make the world forget what took place that September morning or, failing that, to erase from our collective memory the identity of the perpetrators. Years ago I would have thought it impossible to achieve such a task but that's because I was twenty-one years old when those towers crumbled and the attacks have remained the formative event of my generation.

I can see now that knowledge must be transmitted from each generation to the next. To my yet unborn children 9/11 will be ancient history, something like the Kennedy Assassination is to me.

MSNBC's Krystal Ball: Animal Farm Was an Anti-Capitalism Parable

Thus completely missing the point.

Orwell was a brilliant man, and he struggled to reconcile his wish for a certain type of world with his knowledge that such a world could probably never come to be as he wished it. Much of his writing was devoted to the horrors of failed attempts to achieve that world.

Animal Farm is a critique of Stalinism/Communism, and although capitalism as an exploitative system plays a role at the beginning of the book, by the end the astute reader sees Communism as at least as bad or even worse. Orwell was also aware of the strong possibility that liberty and socialism of any sort (not just Communist Stalinism) could not be reconciled, as the above quotes from him indicate. It is my opinion that Orwell came very close to understanding that his vision of a planned economy plus freedom could not come to pass, that the contradiction was basic, and that socialism would always sow the seeds of its own destruction. I just think he couldn't fully face and embrace that knowledge because to do so would have meant renouncing a lifelong dream. So he clung to some notion of a kinder gentler socialism without the totalitarianism, while at the same time he wrote tirelessly about the evils of Communism.

For I need replenishment of my life force.

Giving old mice blood from young ones makes them smarter and improves such functions as exercise capacity, according to reports from two research teams that point to new ways to study and potentially treat diseases of aging. In one study, researchers at Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco found that blood transfusions from young mice reversed cognitive effects of aging, improving the old mice's memory and learning ability. The report was published Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine. Two other reports appearing in Science from researchers at Harvard University found that exposing old mice to a protein present at high levels in the blood of young mice and people improved both brain and exercise capability. An earlier report by some of the same researchers linked injections of the protein to reversal of the effects of aging on the heart. ... What isn't known from all this research, said Buck Institute's Dr. [Brian] Kennedy, is whether young blood might also increase the life span of mice and, if so, what such implications for humans might be.

Robocop: The Almost Perfectly Symmetrical Film

The Old Testament is full of examples of chiasmus, which is a figure of speech used in ancient times to emphasize balance. It lists a bunch of ideas or things and then repeats each of them in reverse order. It's often not an identical repetition. It frequently uses the opposite of what came before or something similar to it.

...Why am I giving a grammar lesson? Because I've noticed this same pattern used in films - a Cinematic Chiasmus, if you will. That shouldn't be too surprising. Good storytelling involves setting up ideas and then paying them off over the course of the story. But some films have second halves that so closely mirror their first halves that it makes them truly breathtaking to behold once you notice their chiasmus at work.

RoboCop (1987) is the first film I reviewed on this website, so it's fitting that it should be the first that I talk about here. Get ready to see how RoboCop is an almost perfectly symmetrical film.

44 Regarding our discussion of household cleaning tips last night: I said I would report back on how well Magic Eraser did on cleaning the louvered closet door slats. Well, it did a great job! The closet doors in the house are stained wood, and kind of rough. Dust really sticks. Previous attempts to clean them have been very time-consuming and ineffective no matter what I did. The Magic Eraser got most of it on first swipe! I will go over it all later with a damp cloth, because the eraser -which wears away as you use it - left some little parts of itself behind in a few of the rougher areas. I used rubber gloves for this task. So my problem is solved! End of report.

Every Sunday night we'd watch one of his films, going from his short union documentary "The Seafarers" and "Fear and Desire" (1953, and the only film he ever shot in California) to "Eyes Wide Shut" (199 and maybe even some of the Kubrick-related follow-ups, "Color Me Kubrick" and "Room 237."

Elevators have doors on the elevator and doors at each floor that open simultaneously when the elevator is at a floor. My guess is that while the doors were open, the cord for the vacuum fell into the elevator and when the doors closed the plug was inside the elevator. When the elevator (with plug) tried to go to the fifth floor, the vacuum (still on the first floor) tried to go with it.

Question is, what happened to the elevator when the vacuum hit the ceiling? Did it stop, pull the plug off the cord, or yank the doors off the elevator?

186 Someone brought up The Deer Hunter. Supposedly, Michael Cimino (TDH's director) got the gig after proving himself with Clint Eastwood and "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" in 1976. According to legend, supposedly near the end of production, Eastwood asked Cimino "how much longer to shoot?" "About two weeks or so," said Cimino. Clint deadpanned back "you better be done in three days because that's when I'm going on vacation." And given that Eastwood had the clout in 1976 and Cimino had *none,* that's what he had to do. The film got done, got released, and was I guess a moderate hit (I actually have no idea personally). Anyway I guess it impressed Universal enough to let him do "The Deer Hunter"... which turned out to be a mistake as, just like on his later notorious "Heaven's Gate," Cimino just loved to take his sweet sweet time shooting and shooting and shooting some more, as well as going way over budget and spending money like water. Cimino probably should have been a senator instead of a filmmaker.

274 Am thinking I could make the late July meetup, IF: - I stay with relatives in Parker AZ (still far away but overall an easier drive to/from Vegas), thus avoiding spending money for a hotel. - I rent a car and avoid eating out except for fast food and maybe *one* quickie trip to Margaritaville. - I get used to the idea of having only enough money to play poker somewhere for several hours during *one* day.

SF's planning and building departments are notoriously corrupt.

There have been periodic scandals involving "expediters", who charge a stiff fee to get your project through the mill, where a chunk of that fee is getting kicked back as cash in brown envelopes to cronies who work in the city departments.

Well, I hate to tell you this but pretty much every drafting program is a PITA with a big learning curve. In addition, once you're proficient, you'll find that there is at least one point in whatever you're doing with the thing where something that should take you five minutes takes you three hours and frustrates you so much you start showing signs of hypertension.

So I'll go off the beaten path and suggest something outlandish -- for that 80'x35' building.....get a roll of something like this -- http://tinyurl.com/nsp9x67 -- hack yourself off two 4' sections, and draw a rectangle 40 inches by 17.5 inches on each. Scale is 1/2" to 1', easy-peasy.

The only time I was ever in Vegas was on a july 1st. It was the silliest thing I ever did. A fucking solar flare would have felt like air conditioning. I think I was more amazed that people actually lived in that climate. I thought I saw satan with an oxygen mask and an ice cube tied to his forehead, but it was probably just the frigging heat stroke making me see things. If I ever do vegas again it will be in some February in the middle of the next ice age during a solar flame out. July......why did I pick july..

God forbid you sell the house in that condition. You will get raped on the offers.

If you're at the Rio, you're going to take a cab to anywhere on the strip. If you're on the strip, there are several (!) monorails available (most free) -- http://tinyurl.com/ko5n58d.

In practice, this means that you can get from casino to casino while spending minimal time outside, and without significant effort outside. And every casino will be totally air-conditioned.

And then if you REALLY want a deal, there's the (old and creaky, but still operational on Fremont Street) El Cortez. To top it off, I've read that once you've paid for two nights there, you're pretty much guaranteed coupons for two free nights there every year for the rest of your freakin' life. Downtown Vegas isn't as bad as it sounds (a hotel there would be a decent back up for the meetup. ) No, it's not as clean/chic/swingin' as the Strip, but it's a bit cheaper. Don't know much about the quality of accommodations, but they do have cheaper Blackjack/Poker tables; IE $5 tables everyday.

Single short stories are teasers, meant to promote brand loyalty. As such, their value is in building the reader base and not the royalty. Use them sparingly as lead-ins to anthologies, which can easily hit $2.99.

The Imp is like three different hotels stuck together -- we haven't had the cramped, stinky ones....but I don't doubt they exist. The parking garage is odd when its dry, but it's seriously odd (and dangerous) when it rains -- we saw a bus almost swept away. Who the hell hangs out there? -- it's just a place to doss. I didn't notice the check-in was that bad. The entrance to the strip is sort of like platform 9-3/4 in the Harry Potter series. And.....holy crap! You ATE there?!?!?!?

Self-published authors now need to find an audience, reside in a community of readers (AoSHQ) , and flog effortlessly, and that, hopefully, fingers-crossed, leads to wider exposure.

Same kind of crappy bars and locals with unpronouncable Slavic names (my home town had a few more Italians though). 486 486 cthulhu: thanks for clearing that up.

I also have two Chik-fil-As even closer than the In-N-Outs. Gloat. ;-)

Will admit the closest Sonic is a 30-min drive to the OC however. Mini-gloat. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 06, 2014 02:40 AM (HVI5a) Hide posts from (HVI5a)

Oh, what we wouldn't have done for a 30-minute drive to a Sonic. Instead, we had to drive 45 minutes, scale a 40-foot cliff over jagged rocks, and crawl on our bellies like a reptile under barbed wire to get our Sonic fix......

And, seriously, it's almost a 30-minute drive to the second In-and-Out....

487 G'evening Horde. Tried out the Carl's Jr Sea Salt and Caramel ice cream malt on today's drive. Liked it a lot - salty & sweet is a great combo, but it also had tiny bits that were crunchy like salt but tasted like caramel. Added a lot to the experience.

491 Vegas: Others have mentioned timeshares. Good idea only if you can wrangle a T-totaler willing to be chauffeur. ( Me, I'd reject that gig. I've seen what you people do to a thread. ) Nee to be aware that some of those rates are based on a time-share sales thing; you need to attend a sale presentation to get the basic rate.

I can't say that it's the stupidest thing I've ever read, but it is far from the most intelligent. Any dumbass looking at a map of USDA Plant Hardiness Zones -- http://tinyurl.com/7r5u267 -- who doesn't get that a FIVE degree change would mean, for instance, that anything you could farm today in the dark green belt (6a) could be farmed after the change in the light blue one (5b) -- is scarcely more intelligent than a plant themselves.

Sonic burgers are meh, their hotdogs are innovative [but I don't do dogs], they've got interesting chicken sammiches, they do mozz sticks and onion rings, there's decent breakfasts.....but they kick out the jams on drinks and ice cream stuff. Plus, they still do a drive-though grilled cheese....which is a mark of grace when you're "indisposed".

My last visit to the dentist involved replacing a failed crown without anesthesia. The reason that anesthesia wasn't involved was that I'm extremely phobic about being punctured.....which means that blood tests are a bit traumatic.

The dental appointment is just a cleaning -- but it's 13:45 from now. If my blood test needs to be more than 12:30 from now (supposed to be 12 hour fast, but put on some cushion), then I'll need to get there, wait for the vampire, get it done, recover, and drive to the dentist in 1:15. It's not worth the -- excuse me -- *glug, glug, glug* -- *ah!* -- just not worth the trouble.

Did he really wake up with growing pains, and you noticed?!?!?

There is a serious reason that I'm asking, and it's not just to be an irritant....."old wives' tales" had said for ages that kids have growing pains, are cranky, and then sprout up. Conventional science pooh-poohed this for decades, insisting that growth was a continuous process. I can remember that a landmark paper then noted that DAILY HEIGHT MEASUREMENTS showed that kids could seriously grow 1/2" in height overnight. In the same paper, it noted that previous days to this growth, they slowly gained weight for a while, then turned irritable for a bit right before the spurt.

So it's a source of much amusement to me that potentially every mother noted that scientific consensus on growth was completely out to lunch but the "scientific truth" steamrollered on regardless for decades.

You actually, personally, without a double-blind study, noted your son having growing pains -- without calibrated instruments?

HAHAHA HAHAHaHa HaHahaha hahahaha!!!!!!!!

Good for you!

525 Michael Walsh from PJ media on "Why Benghazi matters" "Honorable people do not let American diplomats twist slowly in the wind while they attend “debate prep” and rest up for a shakedown meeting with the One Percent. Honorable people do not suddenly go AWOL while American soil is under attack. Honorable people do not fail to mobilize the formidable resources of the American military, even if it might not be possible for them to get there in time. Honorable people, under questioning by Congress, do not lose their temper and start shouting. Honorable people do not look the bereaved in the eye and lie about who and what killed their loved ones. Further: honorable people do not go before the public on the Sunday talk shows and knowingly transmit a bald-faced lie. Honorable people do not continue to lie about what took place. Honorable people do not say “We are Americans; we hold our head high,” and then hang their heads in shame as they cut and run at the first sign of trouble. Honorable people do not continue to reward the dishonorable with ever-higher posts. Honorable people resign. And until honorable people are restored to Washington — not credentialed Ivy League lawyers with high name recognition steeped in cheap Marxism and fashionable anti-American contempt, but genuine patriots who understand that something has gone terribly wrong with America and needs to be redressed — there will be no justice for the victims of Benghazi. As the Left like to say: no justice, no peace."
