96 Octo thorpe.  How the hell did you know that?

Octothorpe is just one of a plethora of names for the symbol. In the US itÂ’s often called the pound key, because it has long been used to mark numbers related to weight, or for similar reasons the number sign, which is one of its internationally agreed names. Elsewhere it is commonly called hash, a term dating from the 1970s that may have been a popular misunderstanding of hatch. Many humorous or slangy terms have also been recorded, none of them with wide circulation: tic-tac-toe, gate, crunch, and many others. In 1989, one of the international standards bodies settled on square as the official name,

187 What gets me is how so many liberals are, on paper, college-educated. And they somehow can't figure out that Boko Haram - whose name is half pidgin English and half Islamic, and who quote Islamic law as Islamic everywhere they can - are an Islamic supremacist outfit. And they can't draw the parallel between that and the Taliban a third of a world away. And Hizbu't-Tahrir in Indonesia a third of a world from that. I think deep down they do know. But their livelihood rests on the US government, and as such Islamic supremacism is more abstract to them, than the threat of a Tea Party takeover and the loss of their iron rice bowl. Much like how the Roman Emperors were more afraid of mutineers in their own army than of the barbarians.

219 173 Boko Haram translates to 'western education is prohibited' or something similar

vlad teppes has been documenting boko haram for over a year Posted by: Wet Bandit at May 07, 2014 11:23 PM (RMvwE) Hide posts from (RMvwE)

There are a series of religious laws about "halal/haram" in Islam, and it's sort-of similar to "kosher/treyf" for Jews. Halal is allowed, has been properly done, and is good, where haram is not just forbidden -- it's the wrong stuff, improperly handled, and worse than 'regular' bad -- it's like, 'cross the street to avoid' bad.. A somewhat more poetic translation that better gets the point across would be "filth".

As I understand it, "boko" is local pidgin for the kind of learning brought in by missionaries, do-gooders, Peace Corps volunteers, and the like-- and is derived from the English word "book". So "book-learning".

So "Boko Haram" would be "book-learning [outside the Koran] is filth". Makes them sound like a charming bunch.

225 I hear that a lot and it makes me wonder why it seems that the bulk of bolt guns are more or less mauser-based. Posted by: toby928© at May 07, 2014 11:37 PM (QupBk) Because the Mauser action is much stronger than the Enfield, due in part to the Mauser's front locking lugs. Enfields lock in the rear of the bolt, which imposes limits on the pressure capabilities of the design. Also, Mauser licensed the design to damn near everyone in the early 20th century, even Germany's enemies, as long as they paid the fees.

277 263 ChenJeff,
I lost more roses than I have in years from frigid cold.
I thought some were dead, but they are sprouting new basal shoots. They need to be fertilized, but & I am serious, there has to be at least 500 + maple tree weeds in garden.
I came in house & stared to update list of rises that I planted & where. I didn't finish deleting dead ones that came out in my hand.

I read what you posted on ONT early this am. Left shoulder is on fire right now.

I'm going to put iPad away & turn computer off. Otherwise I would ask how you are. I am going back yo pain doctor Friday for second injection in same spot for shoulder pain.

Thank you very much for asking.

What's worse is that you're going to find that some of them are going to come back below the graft off the rootstock, and the variety you are trying to grow won't. Once everyone is back to being green, you'll need to "call the roll" and make sure everyone is who they're supposed to be.

And my collection's next home has been already arranged: bottom of a reservoir.

289 271 anyone else hear where the Germans in WW1 wanted to ban trench shotguns because they were nasty but had no qualms about using gas? Posted by: Wet Bandit at May 08, 2014 12:02 AM (RMvwE) There's a little historical context needed here. During WW1, the main chemical warfare weapons were mustard gas, chlorine, and phosphogene. Compared to the organophosphate (nerve) gases discovered and produced in the 1930's through the 1950's, the WW1 chemical weapons are extremely weak in comparison. These mostly served to maim, not kill. Also, chlorine and phosphogene need a much higher concentration to kill (via suffocation) verses gases such as Sarin or Tabun. Also a main cause of soldier's deaths in WW1 were infections from wounds, serving in the trenches, or from other sources.

Sig p229, .40. Also have 3 good rifles (1 shotty, 1 AR clone, 1 long range), but haven't been through enough models to settle on one of any of them yet (so many guns, so little time). Sure, there's thousands that would crawl out of the woodwork to tell me what's wrong with those pistols, but they go bang when I want them to go bang and I religiously clean and replace/upgrade (thank you, Brownell's!!). Those aren't rabbit huntin' weapons. They're him-or-me weapons. And for the most part, if you shoot someone with a rifle, as a civilian, you're going to prison unless it's in your home. 359 Exciting new book A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race, and Human History NYT Science write Nicholas Wade. It's all about human evolution, especially recent human evolution that created the different races and ethnic groups and variations of humanity. The data is quite overwhelming at this point though most people still are unable or unwilling to process it. They still are in the totally discredited blank slate camp, that all humans and human minds are basically the same. But we are shaped by our evolution. And as Wade makes abundantly clear "New analyses of the human genome have established that human evolution has been recent, copious, and regional." Exciting times. Most people will still ignore the new research. It threatens their dogma, I guess, and their child-like insistence that all people are the same. But they aren't.

363 From an Amazon review: It’s worth reconsidering the conventional middlebrow wisdom on race, which has congealed into: “Race does not biologically exist because, uh … Science!” Nicholas Wade, the New York Times’ chief genetics reporter, has published 1,052 articles in the newspaper of record since 1983. For most of this century, Wade has been methodically waging war in the Science section of the NYT against the liberal creationist myth that race isn’t real. He has now written a definitive book on the existence of biological differences among races. Wade writes: "Ever since the first modern humans dispersed from the ancestral homeland in northeast Africa … the populations on each continent have evolved largely independently of one another as each adapted to its regional environment. … Because of these divisions in the human population, anyone interested in recent human evolution is almost inevitably studying human races, whether they wish to or not." To Wade, race isn’t just skin deep. In fact, he finds the visual differences between races less significant than the behavioral. Evolution’s strategy for adapting to radically different environments is to “keep the human body much the same but change the social behavior.” .. Wade says with some frustration in his latest book: "The fact that human evolution has been recent, copious, and regional is not widely recognized, even though it has now been reported by many articles in the literature of genetics. The reason is in part that the knowledge is so new and in part because it raises awkward challenges to deeply held conventional wisdom."

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at May 07, 2014 09:14 PM (ZPrif)

364 Another review summarizes: The second part of the book is really the meat of the story and Wade is on relatively firm ground here. He details a variety of studies based on tools like tandem DNA repeats and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that point to very distinctive genetic differences between populations dictating both physical and mental traits. For me the most striking evidence that something called race is real comes from the fact that when you ask computer algorithms to cluster genes based on differences and similarities in an unbiased manner, these statistical programs consistently settle on the five continental races that have often been defined throughout history, often based on more superficial and erroneous grounds. Wade also demolishes the beliefs of many leading thinkers who would rather have differences defined almost entirely by culture - these include Stephen Jay Gould who thought that humans evolved very little in the last ten thousand years (as Wade points out, about 14% of the genome has been under active selection since modern humans appeared on the scene), and Richard Lewontin who perpetuated a well-known belief that the dominance of intra as opposed to inter individual differences makes any discussion of race meaningless. As Wade points out through citations of solid research and interviews with leading geneticists, this belief is simply erroneous since a variety of genetic clustering methods do seem to point to the existence of distinct races. .. One of the major lessons in the book is that a scientific topic cannot be declared off limits or whitewashed because its findings can be socially or politically incendiary; as Wade notes, "Whether or not a thesis might be politically incendiary should have no bearing on the estimate of its scientific validity." He gives nuclear physics as a good analogy; knowledge of the atom can lead to both destruction and advancement, but without this knowledge there will still be destruction. More importantly, one cannot hide the fruits of science; how they are used as instruments of social or political policy is a matter of principle and should be decoupled from the science itself. In fact, knowing the facts provides us with a clear basis for making progressive decisions and gives us a powerful weapon for defeating the nefarious goals of demagogues who would use pseudoscience to support their dubious claims. In that sense, I agree with Wade that even if genetic differences between races become enshrined into scientific fact, it does not mean at all that we will immediately descend into 19th-century racism; our moral compass has already decided the direction of that particular current. Ultimately Wade's argument is about the transparency of knowledge. He admonishes some of the critics - especially some liberal academics and the American Anthropological Association - for espousing a "culture only" philosophy that is increasingly at odds with scientific facts and designed mainly for political correctness and a straitjacketed worldview. I don't think liberal academics are the only ones guilty of this attitude but some of them certainly embrace it. Liberal academics, however, have always prided themselves on being objective examiners of the scientific truth. Wade rightly says that they should join hands with all of us in bringing that same critical and honest attitude to examining the recent evidence about race and genetics. Whatever it reveals, we can be sure that as human beings we will try our best not to let it harm the cause of our fellow beings. We are, all of us, human beings first and scientists second.

368 Charles Murray reviewed A Troublesome Inheritance in the WSJ the other day. Book Review: 'A Troublesome Inheritance' by Nicholas Wade http://on.wsj.com/1iSRxJJ he concludes: "A Troublesome Inheritance" poses a different order of threat to the orthodoxy. The evidence in "The Bell Curve," "Male/Female" and "A Blank Slate" was confined to the phenotype—the observed characteristics of human beings—and was therefore vulnerable to attack or at least obfuscation. The discoveries Mr. Wade reports, that genetic variation clusters along racial and ethnic lines and that extensive evolution has continued ever since the exodus from Africa, are based on the genotype, and no one has any scientific reason to doubt their validity. And yet, as of 2014, true believers in the orthodoxy still dominate the social science departments of the nation's universities. I expect that their resistance to "A Troublesome Inheritance" will be fanatical, because accepting its account will be seen, correctly, as a cataclysmic surrender on some core premises of political correctness. There is no scientific reason for the orthodoxy to win. But it might nonetheless. So one way or another, "A Troublesome Inheritance" will be historic. Its proper reception would mean enduring fame as the book that marked a turning point in social scientists' willingness to explore the way the world really works. But there is a depressing alternative: that social scientists will continue to predict planetary movements using Ptolemaic equations, as it were, and that their refusal to come to grips with "A Troublesome Inheritance" will be seen a century from now as proof of this era's intellectual corruption.

Posted by: GnuBreed He will surely be thrown under the bus; challenging the "race is imaginary" orthodoxy in academia is career suicide. Of course, Wade is 100% correct - but that's why they will hate him so much. In truth, this mainly an argument only within academia. Out in the real world, 99% of people unselfconsciously acknowledge that there is such a thing as race, because it is so self-evident as to not merit debate. Even the leftist "race is nothing but a cultural construct" buffoons themselves instantly turn around after making this claim by adding that their critics are "white supremacists" who are racist against "black" people. Wait -- if race is imaginary, then no one is white or black, and thus no one can be racist -- right? Their arguments go in circles and make no sense. Which is why the average person, of any race, scoffs and generally ignores the academic "common wisdom" about the non-existence of race.

377 Suddenly Michelle Obama cares about these poor Nigerian girls -- where the hell was she three weeks ago when they were kidnapped?! This might sound crazy, but I think the Dems & the MSM (BIRM) are finding this story interesting just so it distracts from Benghazi -- Donna Brazille confirms my suspicion: the other day on MSNBC she said "if we weren't focusing on Benghazi, we'd be covering other stories like these Nigerian girls!" As she said this nonsense, all I could think of was "where the hell has your outrage been?" they have had weeks to care and have not. That is, until Boehner announced a Select Committee. In fact, Brazille's twitterstream was looked into and she had never mentioned these poor girls until now.

Further, this story is everything the MSM does not want to cover: Islam as the bad guy, Christians as the victim (remember, WE'RE the bullies), slavery being a modern day problem (remember, they OWN the slavery-angle for grievance mongering), AND the biggest reason of all: blacks are the ones selling blacks into slavery.

As annoyed as I am about their ulterior motives, however, I am glad this story is FINALLY seeing some coverage outside of conservative and Christian media (who were the only ones who ever cared). I pray for them daily.

384 Real Clear Science also reviewed it. VerBruggen doesn't question the science, but does wish Wade had been more diplomatic and sensitive to ... well, sensitivities about race and ethnicity. http://tinyurl.com/ny34r26 Race Is Real. What Does that Mean for Society? By Robert VerBruggen "Recent, copious and regional." These are three words, according to New York Times science correspondent Nicholas Wade, that describe human evolution. That is, our development as a species has continued to the present, has involved significant changes, and (at least until modern travel became available) proceeded separately in each part of the world. Or, in other words: Your eyes aren't fooling you, and those sociology and cultural-anthropology professors you had in college were full of it. Human races exist. Wade has been gently broaching this subject for a long time, regularly reporting new genetic findings on the pages of the Times and even including a chapter on race in his terrific 2006 book Before the Dawn. But in his new work, A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race and Human History, he dives in head-first. He covers everything, from the hard facts that establish the biological reality of race to highly speculative theories about how, exactly, racial groups might differ from each other genetically. It's an important book. It should demolish the idea that race is nothing whatsoever but a "social construct" and jumpstart a conversation about human history. But unfortunately, A Troublesome Inheritance does not equip readers to deal with the broader ramifications of the claims it makes: Though such concerns are arguably outside the realm of science, these theories have the potential to inflame racial prejudices, and Wade's attempts to address this fact leave much to be desired.

The thing about race and eugenics is that the subject has been poisoned by dominance and social constructs. The fact is that various genetic traits are more-or-less valuable in various circumstances. Among other things that this poisoning has produced, real statistics about real measurable differences between peoples has been "disappeared" or is masked.

For instance, let's look at http://tinyurl.com/md9dgeb. Scroll down to the US. Note that Mexican-Americans are, on average, 8 cm shorter than either blacks or whites. Then note how this little datum fails to materialize anywhere that "discrimination against Hispanics" is asserted. It's like the whole "White Hispanic" BS about George Zimmerman -- it is required that real differences be ignored or glossed-over while imaginary ones be elevated to significance. The sort of world where http://tinyurl.com/lzcz7bb needs to apologize to http://tinyurl.com/lzcz7bb for being privileged -- despite the former being a talented hardworking scion of an immigrant family, and the latter being a parasitic bastard scion of a political family capitalizing on the death of a man ten thousand times his better.

Figure out some way to crowdsource 'em.

Or, even better -- there was a story in Silicon Valley some years back where a high-ticket code guy outsourced his own job to Hyderabad at 1/5 the cost....but neglected to tell his employer about it. He merely had the Indian guy do all the work and pocketed the salary, after paying the agreed rate to his "shadow". Only got caught when his "shadow" needed a new VPN fob.

419 Anthony Daniels with a review in the New Criterion Daniels enjoyed the book , but ultimately was unconvinced. http://www.newcriterion.com/articles.cfm/Genetic-disorder-7903 --- It is a curious paradox that those who inveigh most vehemently against race as a concept also campaign most vigorously for racial quotas by means of affirmative action. ... Nicholas Wade, the science editor of The New York Times, has written a book that will no doubt win him many brickbats. In it, he argues that race is a perfectly valid scientific concept and one that is supported by the latest genetic science. It is no criticism of race as a biological concept, he says, that races have no clear boundaries and that gradations between them obviously exist, for if clear boundaries existed and the races could not interbreed, they would be different species, not races. A race is a population of a single species with a cluster of genetic variants, the presence of none of which is either a necessary or a sufficient condition of being a member of that race, but which nevertheless in aggregate gives that population distinguishing characteristics. ...

I don't like ordering from them because they think they know when my proper planting time is & it's a month too early in Boston area. They send in middle to late March. www.edmundsroses.com has quite a few own root roses & Roses Unlimited sells potted roses exclusive own root. I also buy from Rosemania but they are sold out for the year. Grafted roses benefit from Epsom Salts. New basal shoots are good for plants, they are throwing out new canes. I have 12 boxes of Epsom Salts to give to roses, but you have to water in that day. Don't throw some around & expect rain to do it. You have to use hose to dissolve them.

579 Good Morning, Man With No Party, I'm up because shoulder woke me up. I wear neck collar & wrist brace to plant and or/take care of roses. I still have some to plant & won't be able to this weekend.

All of our roses are in pots. I'll try a bit of Epsom salts in the water this year and see how we do.

I sure hope you feel better. Chronic pain is the suxxor.

Fortunately, I set my own hours, and while todays maybe normal, tomorrows may be pretty short.

583 Cthulhu, You will notice new shoots within a week or two. Don't forget to snap off when they are 8to 10 inches, snap top half inch off.

584 Endlich, had a night where we could leave the windows open. That usually happens during the first half of April.

Please send Owl Bore my kindliest regards.

I have to confess that I'm intrigued about where this comment was really intended to go.

586 "I have to confess that I'm intrigued about where this comment was really intended to go."

Just a short little rage against globull warming and al gore. In my own mangled English way.

587 Thank you, MWNP. Are you a pissed off republican? It's hard to tell difference between dems & big spending moderate republicans. You drive a taxi now because of alimony and/or child support. Am I correct?

Am I correct? ********* No, work a straight job plus drive for Lyft in my free time because a divorce knee capped my retirement. The extra 6-700 a week goes right into the retirement fund. Should be caught up in about 5 years.

589 Oh, and I'm a pissed of Conservative. Republican hasn't covered the attitude since Reagan.
