Overnight Open Thread (9 May 2014)
— CDR M

I don't know if it is impossible but it is tiring and tedious to argue with progressives.
Math

Common core won't help you with this job interview. Can you answer the math question below without opening the article for the answer?

A hammer and a nail cost $1.10, and the hammer costs one dollar more than the nail. How much does the nail cost?

Here's the tricky math question one CEO asks to size up job candidates.

Ok, now for something different if you didn't like the math question. The Navy is looking for some new cryptologists and they are using an online game on Facebook to test your mettle. Project Architeuthis.

The game follows the storyline of a US naval cryptologist sneaking aboard an enemy submarine in order to rescue the chief architect of the US weapons programme.

Players will decode complex clues sent by the digital cryptologist to discover the location of the submarine and rescue the high profile prisoner.

Pick-up Lines Study

Heh. The really do studies for everything. What women are looking for in pick-up lines.

“This experiment examined women’s impressions of men using various “pick-up” lines. Seventy women imagined being approached by a man using a flippant and flirtatious “pick-up” line, a direct complimentary line, or an innocuous line that masks his interest. His attractiveness varied too. They then considered him for long-term or short-term relationships. Matching a “good dad” hypothesis, they favored him for a long-term relationship if he used a direct or innocuous line instead of the flippant line, because the latter conveyed lower trustworthiness and intelligence. Matching a “good genes” hypothesis, they favored him for a short-term relationship if he was attractive instead of unattractive, regardless of his pick-up line, presumably because attractiveness signals heritable fitness.

The best and worst pick-up lines in movies. Probably NSFW.

Bacon & Whiskey

Oh. My. Iowa distillery raises pigs to taste like whiskey.

Top 2013 Baby Names

Noah ends Jacob's 14-year run at top among baby names. That recent movie will probably knock Noah out of the top spot this year. Check out the top names that are changing in popularity. Jayceon? Jayse? Castiel? And who names their daughter Everleigh?

Bad British MLB Commentary

Earthquake!

Not sure I'd bother with earthquake insurance in Oklahoma but a lot of people are with the recent quake warning that was issued. Oh I'm sure the Koch brothers are behind this somehow.

Princess Leia

I hadn't heard this before today. Berlin's Terri Nunn was almost Princess Leia.

50 Hi Chemjeff, I told my doctor today that last injection didn't help my shoulder & I have been waking up at 4 or 4:30. He did same injection area & it was weird because I could feel & later see top of left shoulder filled with fluid. I told him it felt odd & he asked if it hurt, it didn't. It was just odd. We were talking about fact that I don't need to see needles & he said that they don't have to worry about the ladies, they do fine. It's big tough looking men, with tattoos all over them, including faces, that pass out.

138 One does not 'talk' to a progressive. You share your feelings. Not thoughts, not facts, your feelings. The poor man in jail for murder. How would you feel if you were that man? It's terrible the crime he did, but it wasn't his fault. His parents are not at fault for their abuse of him either. It's societies fault. That rich old woman should not have had all that money. She probably cheated honest people to get it, and that poor man in prison couldn't help feeling envious of all that money. He deserved his fair share. It's government bureaucrats who are at fault. They should be in prison because they did not take all that money from that old woman, who didn't deserve it, and redistribute it fairly and equally. So government bureaucrats should be in prison. Not innocent people.

Posted by: Molly k. at May 09, 2014 10:51 PM (UfhXB) My best friend in high school was valedictorian and president of our class. She was also captain of the cheerleading squad. re weird books on Amazon: I read the Jack Douglas book about raising wolves. I probably read all of his books, I know I have at least two of them. For those who don't rememeber him, he was a well known comedy writer, a regular on Jack Paar and other talk shows, he married a gorgeous Japanese woman half his age and apparently at one point they (and two sons) lived in Canada and raised wolves. How he got in my pajamas I don't know.

I interviewed for Eaton once, turns out they really didn't want a machine fixer, they wanted a monkey to take notes and tell the day shift to call the vendor in the morning. I told the guy "you want someone to play games with, hire a f'n nanny. You want someone to fix your machines with nothing more than the lint in my pockets I'm your man, just don't make me deal with any stupid shit."

This was after I told the HR lady (when she asked for "an example" fuck me, of when I used "diversity" to solve a problem. Shit. I told her, "You don't build teams with diversity, you build teams by showing a common goal." Left no doubt in my mind why companies complain they can't find "qualified" people.

To all the good, conservative people looking to escape der Pipples' Republik of California: Consider the great state of Oklahoma. The only state where 100% of our counties vote Republican (yeah, I know, but what were the choices?) in Presidential elections. We're no Texas, yet, but our economy is good. Oklahoma's rolling green hills, numerous natural and man-made lakes, vast prairies, and lovely woods can't match the Golden State's mountains, ocean, or redwoods. But we go the extra mile to do our best to make you feel at home! Settle in the Oklahoma City area, and you'll fell right at home, but chances are there won't be any "big one" like California expects. Chances are.

500 To do this properly, I'll need to set up some proper matricesÂ… Posted by: The ∇ Hat at May 09, 2014 11:45 PM (K1sEu) You just had to make me dig it up ... 1st lady has X eggs, 2nd lady has Y eggs. X+1 = 2 (Y-1) X-1 = Y+1 A sane person would stop here and solve for X and Y. But we engineers love the convoluted, so instead we'll rewrite the equations as X - 2Y = -3 X - Y = 2 Which allows us to rewrite the equations as matrices A*B = C [1 -2] [X] = [-3] [1 -1] [Y] = [2] So by finding the inverse of A, A^-1, we can multiply both sides of the equations by A^-1 and solve for B. (B = (A^-1)*C) To show the bloody work of finding the inverse matrix: (A*A^-1 = I) [a b][1 -2] = [1 0] [1 -1] = [0 1] Generates 4 equations 1(a) + 1(b) = 1 -2(a) - 1(b) = 0 1(c) + 1(d) = 0 -2(c) - 1(d) = 1 Which can then be solved a = -1 b = 2 c = -1 d = 1 Plug the values into the equations, we get [X] = [-1 2][-3] [Y] = [-1 1][2] Which finally solves to X = -1 (-3) + 2(2) = 3 + 4 = 7 Y = -1(-3) + 1(2) = 3 = 2 = 5

554 Q: What do chemists call a benzene ring with iron atoms replacing the carbon atoms? A: A ferrous wheel. Posted by: D-Lamp at May 10, 2014 12:12 AM (bb5+k) Wrong. "Ferrous" refers to the divalent oxidation state. If Fe replaced C in a benzene ring, the iron would be a monovalent (1-) oxidation state (assuming that the H becomes a hydride). As such, the Fe would not be ferrous, by definition.

It was a mandate from Sacramento to all Department of Mental Health (now the Department of State Hospitals) a number of years ago that at all hospitals (not just mental ones), restraints were to be used as absolutely LITTLE as possible. It seems that too many times when they were used, patients would have the nerve to die in them. In the meantime of course, internal reports of state healthcare professionals (nurses, doctors, psychologists, etc) being physically attacked by said patients skyrocketed. Actually from what I could find, they were probably overall good legislation to pass. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff the Feds and the States could-- and did-- do to mental hospital patients who basically had been abandoned by family (or had no family), including some experiments only Mengele could have found worthwhile. I know that they basically established that a person couldn't be committed against their will for any longer than 72 hours, unless it could be documented by a physician *and* a psychologist that the person is a danger to either himself and/or others.

Anyway, at the party there was this typical left wing wannabee guru leftist retard that was pontificating on how people don't need guns, guns are stupid, etc etc. He basically thought the few chicks in the circle would buy his bullshit. I sat there listening and he makes the mistake of looking over to me and says "you know man, you know?"

I look at him and say "what I know is that when shit hits the fan my army will be in your castle breaking your shit, drinking your booze, ass fucking your chicks, and making you watch". I don't do diplomatic with lib assholes. Nobody should, so hold your ground.

606 At one of the wards I worked in when I worked in a California state mental hospital, we had a full-blown schizophrenic who had... two electrical nodes in his forehead? Why? Well, it turned out that in 1964, some quack at the state hospital convinced his family that installing the nodes would make shock treatments so much easier; in fact, maybe someday they could even be administered remotely. In 2009, they were still in his head rusting away. That was the kind of weird stuff Lanterman kept the state from trying to do anymore, in my experience. Now OTOH, Lanterman didn't appear to have much to say about how much doctors could "medicate" a patient. So that was pretty much the "new" way troublesome individuals were dealt with. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. But some of the patients in my ward were on so many meds, I don't know how they found the time to do much of anything besides sip and swallow little pills all day long.

609 Oh, another thing about Oklahoma. Dooodes! Before I' passing out on de floor... Daughter & wife are nearby, discussing the petitions (again) to legalize medical and recreational pot in Oklahoma. * Taxes to be about the same as sales tax. To keep the cost low for the po' folk. Seriously! Can we do that for everything? Gasoline? Medicinal tequila? * Encouraging growing, special emphasis on export to other states where it's legal. * Discussion of how to ship through states where it's not! As if this had a chance! I've always said hotbox (SWIDT?) Oklahoma was a great place for growing the herb. Grow it for export? Plenty folks who would never personally touch the stuff would be glad to grow it. I hear it grows here like a weed. Why, I may even have, secreted somewhere deep in the catacombs, a tiny knotted-off corner of a sandwich baggie with a few Acupulco Gold seeds from that trip to New Mexico forty-some years ago. I could be a pot farmer for nothing. I can see it now. As I ride across the prairie, tweezers gleaming in the moonlighty night. Ha ha of course not. That's silly. They wouldn't be viable. And nowadays, so I hear, you don't get those bonus free seeds anymore. Rats. Wait, wasn't there something about a Federal law... some ginormous per-ounce tax? HaHa again. What am I saying? Who enforces that old stuff any more? Wow, I hope it's not like gasahol, where the cost of other hemp products goes up because of all the tokers. They want their router to be your home's main router. And they'll configure it. And halfass the security.

I've got my router hanging off one of their router's ports. The first time I tried this, my router discovered that the router one notch up the line was 192.168.1.1 and decided that it would start a subnet at 232.116.47.8 or some such BS, and I had to do a reset to factory defaults to get it out of that mindset (I've got ancient equipment with hard-coded IP addresses). It turns out that you can actually make their router hand out addresses starting at a different IP number than 192.168.1.xxx. This means also that I get full gigabit ethernet between my computers, even if someone is watching HD television on two screens.

Ahhhh, that takes me back. When I was in High School, the droogs would perform what we called "the elevator game" -- where you improvise the middle of a surreal conversation when you get into earshot of a stranger. The classic scenario, and the reason it's called "the elevator game", is when you're in an elevator and someone steps on.

You politely smile as they enter, then as the doors close, one of you says something like: "Tom was having trouble keeping the dogs of her, with all that bacon grease just dripping all over" -- and another saying, "well, that Labrador was just being friendly" and you just keep going forward, until either the droogs or the victim get off the elevator.

669 1) The left really is mentally ill. I know Ace or others may say that they say that about us, and while it is a possibility they are right, I feel that most of us do not show the denial of reality and cognitive dissonance they do. 2) The root of their belief is narcissism. They believe what they do in order to feel good about themselves and superior to those that do not agree with them. 3) The unhinged reaction to those that dare disagree with them is an example of narcissistic rage. 4) We understand them better than they do! 5) Because they believe themselves to be the most holy of the holy, it is ok for them to to "lynch" us however they see fit.

I was at yet another party on night, and my other guitar player at the time is like to the right of Attila the Hun. He hates the left with the heat of a 1000 suns. At that time Gibson came out with this smart wood series. which was guitars made from "managed growth" forests, basically meaning not usual guitar wood, but tree hugger approved wood that in a sane world might have been best used for making crates or picnic benches. There was a dude there that was ranting about the "wonderful " smart wood, and save the forests, and guitars don't need to be made out of old growth wood, and we should be playing them, etc. My terror twin looks at him and says "fuck that shit, I only play guitars that I know 2 entire villages were wiped the fuck out to get the wood to build them". I still laugh when I think of that. Twist the knife, and shit in the wound.

If I'm feeling particularly arrogant, I'll answer with the truth -- I've got a touch of OCD to where I'll allow a project to not entirely consume me.....but to take big bites.

True story -- one time, the BH and I were on vacation in Puerto Rico and were having dinner in a nice restaurant in Ponce. I had been driving all day, so I wanted to wash up -- and on the way to the men's room, there was this pay phone....and with the three-hour time difference, the company where I was essentially a GM would still be open. So I grab the phone, punch in the calling-card code and phone number, and ask for the guy I left holding the fort.

When he got on the line, I asked how things were going, and he told me that he was facing a "line-down" situation because certain critical parts hadn't shown up on time. I immediately started rejiggering the production activities of the place based on what was on hand....and was just about done with it 40 minutes later when the BH showed up and grabbed me by the ear.

Here's the thing about that question -- anyone who thinks it has one answer and that they know it is horribly misinformed. When you're managing actual flesh-and-blood people, your own skills are like a toolkit -- and the more versatile the tools you can apply, the better your results are likely to be.

Some underperforming people need inspired, others need a good dose of fear, a few will need a pep-talk, many will need training, others are batshit-crazy and just need to be far, far away when they detonate.

The question makes just as much sense as saying "what tool do you use to fix a car?"

I just changed the BH's inner fender liner -- she'd snagged it on something and tore a chunk off. This involved jacking the car waaaaaaaay up and spending a bunch of time in the wheelwell....which I am very, very, very cautious about (not particularly wanting to drop a car on my head). Did it on my sloped driveway -- chocked two wheels, had contingency plans -- was probably still safer than your having to make-do with field expedients.

In case you ever need to know, all four are between the wheels. If you look under the car, you will find that there are two "thick spots" on each side. You're only supposed to lift the car on the thick spots.

In other words, the bottom of the car should look like O -_-----------_- O where the O's are where your tires are. You have to be really close to the ground to see the spots, but you're only supposed to lift the car from where the underscores are -- and IRL they're only a couple of inches across.
