Piers Morgan and CNN to Part Ways Due to Low Ratings and "The Provincialism" of CNN's Audience, Says the New York Times
— Ace

Actually, the reasons could include the British police's recent questioning of Piers "under caution" in regard to the 2011 phone hacking scandal.

What's astonishing to me is that the New York Times attributes Morgan's low ratings to the "provincialism" of CNN's audience.

There have been times when the CNN host Piers Morgan didn’t seem to like America very much — and American audiences have been more than willing to return the favor. Three years after taking over for Larry King, Mr. Morgan has seen the ratings for “Piers Morgan Live” hit some new lows, drawing a fraction of viewers compared with competitors at Fox News and MSNBC.

It’s been an unhappy collision between a British television personality who refuses to assimilate — the only football he cares about is round and his lectures on guns were rife with contempt — and a CNN audience that is intrinsically provincial. After all, the people who tune into a cable news network are, by their nature, deeply interested in America.

His evidence for this? The writer David Carr claims he himself is guilty of such provincial thinking:

. When something important or scary happens in America, many of us have an immediate reflex to turn on CNN. When I find Mr. Morgan telling me what it all means, I have a similar reflex to dismiss what he is saying. It is difficult for him to speak credibly on significant American events because, after all, he just got here.

Carr goes on to consider two other British hosts who have had success in America: Simon Cowell (?!!?!) and David Frost. But he finds them unlike Morgan, so he sticks to his "provincial" theory.

For some reason, he fails to consider the British/Iranian Christiane Amanapour.

Carr then blames it on America's provincial attitude towards guns:

In a sense, Mr. Morgan is a prisoner of two islands: Britain and Manhattan. While I may share his feelings about the need for additional strictures on guns, having grown up in the Midwest, I know that many people come by their guns honestly and hold onto them dearly for sincere reasons.

Mr. MorganÂ’s approach to gun regulation was more akin to King George III, peering down his nose at the unruly colonies and wondering how to bring the savages to heel. He might have wanted to recall that part of the reason the right to bear arms is codified in the Constitution is that Britain was trying to disarm the citizenry at the time.

He regrets none of it, but clearly understands his scolding of “stupid” opponents of gun laws was not everyone’s cup of tea.

That may be true, but what does that have to do with "provincialism"? If anyone's "provincial" here, it appears to be Morgan himself, confessedly, per Carr, a "prisoner" the islands of Britain and Manhattan.

But it's CNN's audience's fault for not appreciating this pudgy, poorly-informed histrionic doofus' take on the Second Amendment.

52 As one of CNN's last remaining 10 viewers (long story.) I hardly ever watched Piers Morgan. When they launched him, I expected a rapid fire interview hour not unlike if you fed Larry King some uppers. Little news, mostly personal interest stuff. What you got was a weird sort of carnival barking that made absolutely no sense. Less interview and more poorly thought out lecture. And his tone is insufferable. Even the reboot of crossfire does a better job of at least respecting their opponents. And FFS, that leads with Van Jones and Stephanie Cutter. So to put that in perspective, Piers Morgan is less civil than those two. Axing him won't save CNN though. I still watch "Out Front" because I like the format of hitting several shorter stories, but Anderson Cooper really isn't doing news anymore, and who knows what they'll replace the British douche with.

Yes. When we turn on CNN or Fox, it is because we are deeply interested in what is happening in/with regard to America. Piers Morgan seemingly despises America and Americans despite being a beneficiary of all that is good about America. We do, indeed, despise men such as he. 138 I dunno, I thought Carr had a good point. Piers Morgan refused to assimilate, unlike Mark Steyn, for example. The sum of all his cricket and soccer faggotry, the constant reminders that he isn't an American (as if we couldn't tell), combined with his constant scolding of traditional American practices grated on even those who might normally agree with him, like David Carr. Instead of coming off as the sophisticated European exemplar of advanced culture, he came off like King George, demanding that us hairy-backed savages be reined in. If you're a European shitting on America from Europe, you're a liberal icon. His mistake was that he came to this country and has been complaining about it ever since. Nobody likes an ungrateful guest, and that's how he comes off.

195 I am confused. I thought that the CNN audience was special, sophisticated and intelligent- they want balanced news. Guess the NYT did not understand that and now that same audience is called 'provincial".

Like Elliot Spitzer and a host of other CNN discoveries, Piers was simply not that likeable nor that interesting. That CNN could not find any talent internally and had to import a condescending, obnoxious Brit was an example of the lack of talent.
But if your selection process requires know-it-all liberals first...then what do you expect.

Guess the accent was another problem...after all both Alister Cook and David Frost were big failures too. Americans don't like serious Brits at all.

Anyway, now CNN will search for another personality.

(and I haven't read Ace's post yet, but just when I was about to post this to the morning dump thread, Ace posted about the Ukraine, so...) It was the most stunning case of willful ignorance possible. Baldwin rails against: Andrew Sullivan Anderson Cooper TMZ Shia LaBeouf MSNBC NBC Rachel Maddow Mika B. Phil Griffin Capital One Bank AT&T WNYC radio Huffington Post Then blames Fox, Roger Ailes and Breitbart. He says If MSNBC went off the air tomorrow, what difference would it make? If the Huffington Post went out of business tomorrow, what difference would it make? And, that Liberal and conservative media are now precisely equivalent. He makes no connection to JEF and the divisiveness of the country. Us bitter clingers. Even the U.S., which is so preposterously judgmental now. The heart, the arteries of the country are now clogged with hate. The fuel of American political life is hatred. Who would ever dream that Obama would deserve to be treated the way he has been? And, then, if you can stomach any more, he tilts conservative -- but, is still in denial about it. I had dreams of running for office at some point in the next five years. In the pyramid of decision-making in New York City politics, rich people come first, unions second, and rank-and-file New Yorkers come dead last. I wanted to change that. I wanted to find a way to lower the cost of the city government and thus reduce New YorkÂ’s shameful tax burden. I would have decentralized the schools. My father was a public-school teacher. He always told me that although you could encourage a child to work hard, you could only go so far; that half the goal had to be achieved at home. As progressive as IÂ’ve been in my politics, there are other things I donÂ’t think of as liberal or progressive, just common sense. I probably have to move out of New York. I just canÂ’t live in New York anymore. Everything I hated about L.A. IÂ’m beginning to crave. L.A. is a place where you live behind a gate, you get in a car, your interaction with the public is minimal. I used to hate that. But New York has changed. Manhattan is like Beverly Hills. And the soul of New York has moved to Brooklyn, where everything new and exciting seems to be. I have to accept that. I want my newest child to have as normal and decent a life as I can provide. New York doesnÂ’t seem the place for that anymore. His only choices are NY and LA. Hysterical.

Morgan was fired to minimize the embarrassment to CNN when he is charged with felonies in regard to his involvement with the phone-hacking scandal in UK.  That's all.

Someone should remind David Carr that NYT is only still publishing because of the infusions of cash from Mexican monopolist billionaire Carlos Slim.  Without him, it would have been acquired and sold for parts years ago.  In fact, just before his initial bailout, a study by Wall Street M&A specialists showed the assets of NYT Inc., including their prime Manhattan real estate, vehicles, presses, etc., to be worth more than the capitalization of the newspaper.

IOW, the newspaper operation devalued the company, it is worth less as a newspaper than as component properties.

There was a brit police story type show where the cops would arrive at a place where blood and guts were all over the place. But it was only when they saw a photo of Piers Morgan at the scene, did they puke their guts out.

282 103 Stu-22, Truer words are seldom typed. I just endured 2 hours of CNN at the military hospital here. Two hours more than the last two years.

283 "Piers Morgan and CNN to Part Ways Due to Low Ratings and his show sucking like a fucking dredge" Says the New York Times, but mostly due to both.

284 Ok it has been driving me nuts who was the CNN guy from England that was arrested and had the sex paraphernalia in Central Park? I know it wasn't Piers but who was it?

Richard Quest?

285 The coming civil war will be the urban "elitists" versus the common "folk" of  the Fly-Over Hinterland.

The liberal rats within the cesspools of the cities will eat their own, and their starving hordes will make a target-rich environment as they wander into the countryside fleeing for survival.

286 I'm a little uncomfortable with the treatment Piers is receiving. Buy a "Free Piers!" mug at Factor Gear--please.

289 How do you become part of the "CNN Audience?" Do you have to have a cable-package that only offers, like, 4 channels - one of which is CNN and the other three are Redneck? Because my satellite system comes with this thing called a Remote Control. It's cool, if you haven't seen one before - I can watch one of 100 channels with just the push of a button, without even getting up. Whether I'm liberal or conservative, I can point this thing at the TV and, poof, watch whatever I want. I'm not a "Member" or any network's viewership unless I like what's on. So... it's the CONTENT that grabs me. Pretty cool, eh? Mr. Morgan, please go away and take Mr. Baldwin with you.

290 278, how right you are. Remember all of those jibes about how "we" got the bus into the ditch, or how we had to sit in the back of the bus, etc. Guns, bibles - ring a bell? Trayvon Martin could have been me. The Cambridge police acted stupidly. Etc., etc., etc. The list is long and continues to grow. Obama is a race baiter. Always has been, and always will be.

291 Yes, Jeremy Clarkson has heard the news about Piers ...

Jeremy Clarkson ‏@JeremyClarkson 9h

I'm feeling strangely contented this morning. I wonder if something wonderful has happened somewhere.

Jeremy Clarkson ‏@JeremyClarkson 9h

I understand that Nigerian TV is looking for a new chat show host. Anyone got any suggestions?

Jeremy Clarkson ‏@JeremyClarkson 9h

Hmm. Morgan has told us for years that his ratings are sky high. So obv he wasn't sacked for that reason. Why else could it be, I wonder?

292 Stuart Varney at Fox Business News laughed about Piers' fate this morning.  He had an obvious schadenboner.

@ kbdabear..........   Morgan was actually sky high, thinking that he had any ratings at all, other than abysmally low ones.

PM never fit in because he was a pompous ass and treated everyone to his intilectual superiority.

Boot, door, ass > curb

Some assembly required but a seriously high level of satisfaction.

295 Piers Morgan and CNN parting ways, but not due to Viktor Yanukovich charging CNN for collaborating in a vast right wing Western conspiracy, or something. What do Piers Morgan, Viktor Yanukovich, CNN and the Olympics US media coverage share in common? LOW RATINGS loaded with prejudicial hubris. ...And Piers, it's that island you call home playing our province since 1945. You're the provincial bitch that bit the hand that fed you. Predictions proven SOONER than later: CNN dumps Piers Morgan turd. Russian state television could not even wait for the end of the Games to launch a scathing attack on the ousted Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovich.

296 To put Manhattans size in perspective, Dallas-Fort Worth airport is larger. Not the two towns, the airport itself."

Yeah I don't think so.

Just looked it up...
Dallas Ft. Worth airport:
69.63 square KM

*land area* of Manhattan:

59.5 square KM.

So, yeah...the airport is bigger.

300 I dunno. Piers Morgan certainly fits in as the butt of a joke formerly involving Obama. Ol Piers is interviewing a good old cowboy somewhere in deepest West Texas. There are flies buzzing all around Morgan---he's batting them away but they just keep coming back. Pier's asks the cowboy, "What are these flies?" Cowboy replies, "Horse flies--they hang around a horse's ass." Piers says "You calling me a horse's ass!!" voice rising in indignation. Cowboy replies "Nope." Sucks on a straw for bit and then says, "Can't fool them flies though." Have to say that Ol Piers couldn't fool the flies in CNN's miniscule audience either.

302 What will CNN do with all that leftover money? No more payments to Saddam for access, no more payments to Piers... Maybe they'll hire someone who might report the news. I like my Powerball odds better, but it could happen.

303 "Provincial" means "from the provinces" as contrasted to the Big City, so being a creature of New York (or London) is the opposite of being "provincial".

It's not a very useful term -- suburban London's Mick Jagger is said to have complained that Liverpool's Beatles were hopelessly provincial.
