6 For those not old enough to remember, there was an episode of "Lost In Space" where teenagers ran the planet but kept growing younger and younger. Sort of like the SCOAMF regime, no?

7 Is that one of the Springfield breech loaders (trap-door) converted from a muzzle loader? 7th Cav didn't need repeaters going up against Winchester armed Indians.

10 My father bought one of these for $5 from a gun store in NYC called Bannerman's. He still has it! That's obviously the Glock AR-47. Able to fire 45mm bullets at 3000 rounds per sec with the shoulder thing in the up and engaged position.

15 I remember Woolworth's in Tysons Corner Shopping Mall used to have tables of old surplus Mauser k98s on a table for $19.99 until the late '70s. Jumbled in a pile they were, cash and carry.

19 Have heard bits about Bannermans IslandÂ… love that Olde Warehouse stuff. I remember a gunshop on Hollywood blvd with barrels of lugers. Remember the fire there, too, it drew a crowd, paw had his police/fire scanner on and took the fam to gawk. And a feral scarlet macaw? Lost? where?

21 Spencer carbine, Civil War era. Spencer made so many guns for the union during the war that the post-war sales of surplus weapons put him out of business. Great gun and probably ubiquitous in the old west, but largely ignored by movies and novels with a few exceptions.

Posted by: Grey Fox at May 03, 2014 08:04 AM (g8ZFe)

22 Bannerman certainly would have had retail stores in NYC, but the headquarters was, well, Headquarters, a private castle arsenal on an island up the Hudson:

which has served as an inspiration to generations of several kinds of preppers, including IIRC Jules Verne.

25 I bought my dad a 50-70 sharps carbine, loaded BP cartridges for it and took it to the range. There is something about a Sharps carbine, I had guys coming by just to look at it. The funniest was one guy, known him for years, came by and asked, "So, you went and bought yourself a Sharps, eh?" I told him that I had got if for my dad but I wanted to pop it off to make sure it was running right. He looked down, theatrically kicked a rock and said, "...well, my son never bought me no Sharps" He is an Indian War collector and he gave me some good tips on care and feeding.

26 In Hyattsville MD there's a free range parrot.  1/2 way thru the woods to Frederick and just sitting in a tree like it was Belize.

39 As in other details, Custer knew better. He had outfitted his Iron Brigade with repeaters at his own expense, and they made quite a name for themselves. Yet, red tape being what it is, he didn't insist on 7th Cav having them.

Now let's talk Gatling strategy.

Lew Wallace's uncle (by marriage) was Dr Richard Gatling.

44 If You Aren't Sufficiently WITH The Mob, You are Their Enemy The figurative drawing and quartering of Donald Sterling gave fair warning about the danger of an outraged mob. That danger has now been realized: A man was fired for simply stating that Sterling had a right to say what he wanted in private. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=5686

52 Speaking of shooting, as soon as I feed Sandy, put Goldwind in the barn and have some lunch, I'll have an hour or so to play with the air pistol in our little outdoor shooting gallery. Forgot to buy the pellgun oil I was supposed to get, I suppose I should pick some up before I over do it.

53 I've been using the Epic browser for a couple of weeks, which is Chromium-based. I like it for the most part, but there are some sites where embedded videos don't show up. The two sites where I notice this the most are Pajamas Media and Neo-Neocon. Videos here work fine, and I have no problem at YouTube. I think it might be something about a plugin. Does anybody have any ideas?

54 I was having a party in 1978 and a friend of mine was on my back deck. He called out that there was a parrot in the tree behind the house. We all thought he was stoned. In 1978 this was a good possibility. I swear that bird was as big as a bald eagle. Someone's pet escaped?

64 A few years ago when parrots were very popular, I had a lot of escaped ones in my neighborhood. They are damn noisy with all their jibber jabber. I'd be on the phone and someone would ask, who's there with you talking? No one, just a blabby parrot in a tree.
