Race Day Thread - Daytona 500 Edition - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

BUMPED due to rain delay

Bring your race talk here, y'all.

The Chase is on!

The race is airing on the Fox network at 1:00 EST but coverage began at noon. If your cable provider is an authorized provider, you can also live-stream it via Fox Sports Go

I don't really have a dog in the fight but have become more interested this year and will tune in today.

Is Jimmy Johnson still considered a jackass?

Will Dale Jr. ever live up to legacy his dad left behind?

Are there any rookies you're keeping an eye on?

Speaking of Dillon, ESPN has penned an open letter.

Best of luck to them all and may they safe out there on the oval.

1 Left turn. Repeat for 3 hours.

2 I didn't know Jimmie Johnson was ever considered a jackass. Maybe you are thinking of one of the Busch brothers.

Posted by: Ronster at February 23, 2014 08:32 AM (puNd6)

3 I predict one of the Gibbs cars will win.

Posted by: Ronster at February 23, 2014 08:34 AM (puNd6)

4 I'm a big fan of NASCAR, right up until the first kickoff on opening Sunday.

Posted by: Duke Lowell at February 23, 2014 08:34 AM (o9Rp5)

5 Kyle Larson is the real deal. Best raw talent since Kyle Busch. In the Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon mold.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 23, 2014 08:36 AM (ZPrif)

6 I just wish Dillon would take off that oversized cowboy hat and get the 3 cap on his head.

Kinda lost interest when they quit letting the racers be so creative.

When I was watching, the cars WERE something you drove out of the showroom.

Crude, rude and fun to see.

Posted by: irongrampa at February 23, 2014 08:36 AM (SAMxH)

8 Because watching cars go around in a circle for three hours is so much fun...

Posted by: packsoldier at February 23, 2014 08:38 AM (WYFnZ)

9 I've always been a big fan of Tony Stewart, but I've alwaysthought that both Danica and Kurt were overrated. Ryan Newman was always a more talented consistent driver than either of them. It'll be interesting to see how SHR does this year.

Posted by: johnd01 at February 23, 2014 08:38 AM (r0+v0)

10 packsoldier -- hey, thx for the needless dickery. well done. Here's a crazy idea. If you don't like it, don't watch.

11 From the Dillon letter..."On weekends he earned money selling Cokes and popcorn in the grandstands at Bowman Gray Stadium, the race track in Winston-Salem, N.C., catching glimpses of Junior Johnson and Curtis Turner racing.""" I've been to that track for a stock car race. Hugely enthusiastic fans, they race all summer long. As for NASCAR, I've gotten used to the coverage in the sports page and can now put faces with names with reputations with cars. Lots of personalities/feuds/histories among the drivers and teams, makes for all sorts of miniplots.

Once a week, and the pregame show is interesting enough for Sunday late morning

Though Super Speedway racing is getting lame (see yesterday's Nationwide event)

Danica is a good driver.  The thing is that a lot of the wrecks she does get involved in are not her fault.  But with that, were she a better would she end up getting caught up in those wrecks that aren't her fault?

Posted by: buzzion at February 23, 2014 08:40 AM (LI48c)

14 Lot  of good cars starting at the back because of previous  race crashes this week. Shouldn't hurt their chances of a win in this race.

Posted by: Ronster at February 23, 2014 08:41 AM (puNd6)

15 Kurt Busch seems the funny jackass people enjoy having beers with.  Kyle is the little brother trying so hard that he's a total pain-in-the-ass

Posted by: phreshone at February 23, 2014 08:42 AM (Q6pxP)

16 Really wish NASCAR would put on a third race at Daytona, in the Chase, on the road-course.

Posted by: phreshone at February 23, 2014 08:44 AM (Q6pxP)

17 I didn't know Jimmie Johnson was ever considered a jackass. Maybe you are thinking of one of the Busch brothers. **** See? I told ya I didn't know anything about it.

20 As I mentioned in the last Open Thread.  Chris Meyers sucks

21 How do you guys feel about #3 being back on the track?

22 Chris Meyers should stick to doing weather. Dumbass

Posted by: Chavez the Hugo at February 23, 2014 08:46 AM (Q8vlx)

23 I like both Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski, just based on random bits of coverage I've seen of both over the last couple years.

Posted by: Lincolntf at February 23, 2014 08:46 AM (ZshNr)

24 People don't like Jimmy Johnson because he's boring... not a 'good old boy'

25 The 3 belongs out there.

The race does make great background noise for working on shit in my heated garage, so there's that.

Speaking of, time to go work on that shit.

      Enjoy the afternoon, good people.

27 21 How do you guys feel about #3 being back on the track?

Should be in black.

Posted by: buzzion at February 23, 2014 08:47 AM (LI48c)

28 The #3?  Love the fact that Austin Dillion is literally wearing the black cowboy hat

Posted by: phreshone at February 23, 2014 08:48 AM (Q6pxP)

29 Good to see Vickers back. Gotta think his physiology just might not be built for racing. He's had multiple problems with blood clots. But he can't go on blood thinners since he could bleed out in a wreck. If he were a normal person I'm pretty sure he'd be put on blood thinners the rest of his life. Too bad. He's a young guy in the prime of his career and spent his whole life trying to achieve his dream -- and right when he achieved it his body started betraying him.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 23, 2014 08:48 AM (ZPrif)

30 Uh what's with the model catwalk introductions. *** I can handle that. It's the dramatic music in the background that's driving it over the edge.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 23, 2014 08:48 AM (DmNpO)

31 they drive around in a big circle YAY UGGGGH!!! now motorcycle racing....that's where its at

32 Yeah, I'll catch most of the race on the radio out in my shed. Beautiful day, might as well clean up some of the random detritus that has accumulated over the winter.

Posted by: Lincolntf at February 23, 2014 08:49 AM (ZshNr)

33 The race announcer that I have trouble listening to is Mike Joy.  Seems he tries to be more knowledgeable  than he really is.

34 Can't stand all this bullshit. Fox is ruining sports for me.

Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at February 23, 2014 08:49 AM (Pfvig)

35 But with that, were she a better would she end up getting caught up in those wrecks that aren't her fault?

Exactly. In any given race she will be passed a half dozen times by any one of the top-tier drivers who were shuffled to the back and are charging for the front. Why does she always hang in the back of the pack when she's running the same car and setup as her boss?

Posted by: johnd01 at February 23, 2014 08:49 AM (r0+v0)

36 It's like watching Ricky Bobby with the soundtrack from The Omen.

Posted by: navycopjoe killing with his ninja killing shield at February 23, 2014 08:50 AM (At8tV)

40 There is a new generation of young guys coming up - Larson, Dillon Bros, Chase Elliot. And Dillon's cowboy hat is gonna get him a lot of heat -- both good and bad.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 23, 2014 08:51 AM (ZPrif)

41 The 500 was something when it would kill cars.  Current engines are so detuned, no advantage, and little of the agony of a guy blowing an engine with a half-lap lead.

46 Of course there are plenty of other male drivers right there beside he with that same situation as well. *** She qualifies and runs in the pack with the boys. Why she and her skill, in particular, are scrutinized, continues to surprise me.

Well that's fine for her.  I disagree.  I also think Childress should have brought it back sooner as well.

Posted by: buzzion at February 23, 2014 08:53 AM (LI48c)

48 Danica is there to bring in sponsorship, and  some female eyes to the sport.  She's not a bad driver, but I don't think she will ever be top notch.

Posted by: Ronster at February 23, 2014 08:54 AM (puNd6)

49 Childress saved it for his grandson... hoping he would be good enough to earn it... which qualifying on pole indicates he might have done that.

50 Of course there are plenty of other male drivers right there beside he with that same situation as well.

Yep. And look at the very little media attention they garner. They are treated as "average" drivers.

Posted by: Chavez the Hugo at February 23, 2014 08:59 AM (Q8vlx)

63 Yeah, Danica wouldn't be where she is if she wasn't a hot chick. But several of the male drivers wouldn't be there if they weren't born into the right family. Paul Menard's dad pretty much bought him a spot. Menard has actually gotten a lot better and is a decent racer now. But he sucked for years and didn't belong there and was only there cause his daddy funded his team. Every form of motorsports has this problem today cause racing is so expensive. If you aren't super-rich, then you better be able to bring in sponsor money. One way is to have uber-elite raw driving talent and win all the time, sponsors will flock to you. Another way is to be super marketable -- like Danica. Having the right family name helps, too.

Posted by: johnd01 at February 23, 2014 12:55 PM (r0+v0)

Yeah when it becomes apparent that that is the level of talent those guys have that is the coverage that they get.  Its also why a lot of them become journeymen drivers for teams and sponsors, sometimes struggling to get on either.

72 Super expensive, and sponsorship money is reaaaaaalllllly tough in the Obama economy.  Look at the stands at most of these races, a big fall-off from 10 years ago.  High oil-prices are the ultimate in regressive taxation.

86 Yeah, Nascar got ass-raped by the Great Recession. Daytona is undergoing a massive renovation -- a renovation that mostly involves tearing down a bunch of stands that it can't sell tickets for anymore. Most tracks have had to downscale. 109 24 People don't like Jimmy Johnson because he's boring... not a 'good old boy' He was too buttoned up at first and did have the rep as being a dickhead. Course, that describes all of them now. 20 years ago was another story. Childress always has owned the 3 car number. Too much money not to bring it back.

111 I love sports of many kinds, but I've never been able to gather much interest in auto racing.  My FIL used to watch a lot.  Maybe I should just put it on TV as background entertainment as I go about my chores, and see if I can get caught up in it.  There's not much to watch sports-wise right now other than hockey.  Pre-baseball, pre-March Madness.

138 Also good to see Allmendinger back. He screwed up in 2012 -- got busted cheating with amphetamines -- but he did his mandatory rehab and got back in Nascar's good graces. The rehab angle is dumb since he wasn't addicted, he was cheating. They give amphetamines to fighter pilots so they can fight and fly better -- it's a performance enhancer. If it helps fighter pilots it'll help racecar drivers.

173 Dale Jr is actually a good driver. In the modern era (1972-Today) he's won 19 times. Which is 25th best all time. That's actually an excellent career -- just not comparable to the all time greats like his father. At this stage he's older and past his physical peak, so reflexes are slowing down. He's still competitive and a consistent top 10 driver cause he's on the richest team, Hendrick, with the best equipment. I'd like to see a top young driver like Larson with Hendrick equipment, but there are no spots open at Hendrick. 88, 24, and 42 are huge money makers for Hendrick -- almost whether they win or not. Kasey Kahne is probably the most vulnerable. If he doesn't start winning more consistently Hendrick could dump him for one of the young upcoming guys. I know Gordon was pushing for Hendrick to sign Larson. Ganassi is a good 2nd tier team, but they can't provide Larson the same level of technology and engineering talent that Hendrick can. Hendrick has the best everything.

this was posted on a previous thread: NASCAR hasn't been about the cars for a very VERY long time. Also, they have really fouled up Sportscar racing in this country, which pisses me off. Brian France can go piss up a rope!

All that said I'll watch the Daytona 500 and that will be it for me this year in NASCARville. Thanks for the rain delay update. 193 It's hard for other racing series to get money and attention. Nascar has been very successful and vacuuming that up. Indy Car used to be huge. Sports car racing never seems to get beyond it's niche. I really like off-road truck racing. I think it's exciting and looks great on TV. But it hasn't really taken off. Dirt track racing, late models, World of Outlaws, stuff like that still does decent at a local level. Great racing. Not sure why it doesn't do well on TV. Supercross is cool. Has it's niche. Sells out stadiums , especially out west, but struggles to get a TV audience. But Nascar is where all the money is. So drivers from every other discipline end up there, chasing the money and fame. If Jimmie Johnson could have got rich riding dirtbikes in the desert, he would have kept doing that. Tony Stewart grew up wanting to win the Indy 500, not Daytona. But he, like all the other top talent, are gonna flow to the series with the big paychecks. I think a # of other forms of motorsports have as or more exciting racing than Nascar, but Nascar has a business model that crushed them all. At least in America. And Canada. And increasingly in Mexico. Nascar Mexico is an under-reported success the past 10 years. Been a boom of oval track construction. Nascar is determined to find a Mexican driver they can market like crazy. Daniel Suarez looks very promising and I expect to see him move up to Cup in a few years. He's racing Nascar K&N series now. If he can just convince Carlos Slim to bankroll him, he's golden.

That is all.

I have been a race fan for more than 55 years, and even suffered through the teevee coverage on ABC's Wide World of Snores. I never thought anyone could surpass those days for sheer stultifying, mindless babble.

Posted by: MrScribbler at February 23, 2014 11:02 AM (ff7/5)

196 193: I know, just a extremely frustrated sportscar racing fan. 24 Hours of LeMans is my favorite race. NASCAR now owns sportscar racing with the demise of the American LeMans Series. Its now the United Sportscar Championship. NASCAR owns in though. I watched the Daytona 24 Hours race this year and there were some very NASCAR like calls near the end. That shit may work fine in the stock races but not in sportscars. Not a fan of contrived. Indycars (like sportscars) has been mismanaged into oblivion.

Posted by: Vendette at February 23, 2014 11:08 AM (MpP9p)

201 Nascar actually started sanctioning a European tour in 2012 -- the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. It's very low budget. More like the K&N series. But Nascar is forever determined to grow and spread oval stock car racing. The Great Recession gave Nascar a huge slap down, but it didn't really change their goals. I'm sure they think that, someday, they want to be the globe-trotting stock car version of F1. They were determined to grow beyond their roots as a regional southern sport and conquer America. And they did as far as motorsports are concerned. They beat Indy Racing, they beat everything in America. Now they are focusing on taking over the rest of North America -- and the parts of America that still resist them. And planting seeds in Europe. Huge part of their growth strategy, of course, is finding a young, handsome bilingual Mexican driver who can work Spanish and English media. They've invested big in building up the Nascar Mexico series.

207 Since Danica has become a well-known driver, ratings for Nascar have declined sharply. She's kind of a sport killer. She did nothing for Indycar long term. She left it worse than when she entered. She's just doing what she can to make a living, but there's no evidence she grows the audience. And the evidence we have suggest she actually shrinks it.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 23, 2014 03:18 PM (DmNpO) I just hate that people now think girls need this. Or maybe I just don't get it because I wan't the type of kid who needed role models? I idolized Richard Petty and adored Cale Yarborough and the moments I spent at NASCAR races were some of the best I ever have with my family. 220 IndyCar is hanging on by a thread. The racing is still pretty good but the cars are pretty much spec anymore. No innovation at all. Only 2 engine makes at the moment (Honda and Chevy). Most of the races are on a network nobody has (NBCSN). Outside of the Indy 500, nobody watches the series. Sad really as, again, the racing is pretty good. I love the mix of tracks they go to (ovals, road courses, street courses).

Just wait until  NASCAR emulates the NFL and mandates a "pink out" month for breast cancer awareness.  Pink airhoses for the pitcrews, pink 15 inch steel wheels, pink steering wheels for the in-car driver shots, etc . . .

Unless they already do something like that.  I confess to not watching NASCAR the last few years  and have lost the plot.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 23, 2014 03:27 PM You might have just missed the time filler interview with Danica that just broadcast on Fox. The interviewer was 13 year old granddaughter of Dale Earnhardt Sr. who said at the end that she hopes Danica wins and Uncle Dale comes in second. One of her "questions"(like Nascar didn't have a hand in it) was how Danica handles having all these young girls look up to her.

Posted by: Jen at February 23, 2014 11:33 AM (CKkBt)

228 Danica is a novelty, and hopefully the hype will die down. I think she's mediocre, but. I understand why there's interest, because you're always going to want to see if a girl can ever compete in a man's sport. As long as she keep qualifying, I see no reason why she won't keep racing and good for her. She's no different than any other of the mediocre racers, just that her novelty probably gets her more sponsors, but that's no different than the benefit other racers get via their family connections. And I loved Benny, too!

230 2013 IndyCar Series avg 282k viewers last year on NBC Sports, it's worst TV ratings ever. Including the 6 races on ABC (broadcast), the full season averaged 953k viewers. Down 21% from 2012. For comparison, last year Nascar averaged 5.8M viewers per race. Nascar peaked in 2005 at 8.5M viewers per race, but they've stabilized near that 5.8M the last few years.

I just don't get the whole "Girl Power" thing. Having said all that, I will die laughing if she ever wins one, because you KNOW all these guys will be pissed!

If you go to the Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville Iowa, there is one (just the one) wall of them. From the 1940's and 1950's, when AAA was the sanctioning body and they were officially banned.  Banned in 1909. Like, baseball wasn't segregated until the 1880's. There was a Movement for Social Hygiene.

Women drove the Glidden Cup, the Vanderbilt, Grand Prix, just about everything there was, and now we're supposed to All Hail Danica because, Girl! Nasty little brat custom-built for today's shorter attention span audiences.  I didn't like "Lyn St James" (assumed name) either, because she was a mouth queynt, ran a school that was all about PR, and took people out.

Janet Guthrie, real deal. And Sarah Fisher, a cool calculator who got the degree and now manages a couple of teams. Simona de Silvestro, The Iron Maiden, has joined Sauber (hmph) and may be headed for F1, poor thing. Like to meet her.

248 Good charts here on Nascar TV ratings 1996-2013 http://nascarnomics.com/on-the-chase/ Big thing was Earnhardt's death. Immediately after that the ratings shot up, by millions, and stayed up for 5+ years. Basically a lot of casual Nascar fans, the kind who only tune into Daytona every year, became hard-core fans for a while. The ratings decline since 2007 has the TV ratings back to where they were in the late 90s, pre-Earnhardt's death

Posted by: Vendette at February 23, 2014 01:12 PM (MpP9p)

324 280 Her car is really easy to pick out. Danica's car is actually easier to pick out than most since she get an almost season-long bright green GoDaddy sponser. Most of the other drivers have to change up sponsors multiple times during a season. Season long sponsorships are increasingly rare. Picking out the neon green Go Daddy car is pretty easy. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 23, 2014 04:16 PM (ZPrif) IIRC, that is the only car with the same sponsor for all of the races, even Jimmie Johnson doesn't have a single primary sponsor. Michael Waltrip was interviewed several years ago when she decided to come to NASCAR, and he said one of his sponsors would have doubled their sponsorship dollars to get her, and that was one of his primary sponsors.

About 12% of the schedule. #NASCAR Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 23, 2014 04:47 PM (ZPrif) They do have rain tires, but they only use them in the Nationwide Series and only on road courses. Because of the banking on the oval tracks, weight of the cars, and width of the tires, "rain tires" wouldn't help much. Formula 1 has rain tires and they do run in the rain, but they have stopped/delayed several races in the last few years because there were heavy rains. The 12% of races to be delayed seems about right. Usually 3-4 races a season have some kind of rain caution of some kind, whether for a few minutes or a few hours.

One of their problems is that they come in with lots of sponsorship dollars from their other racing, and those sponsors think that they will be right up front when they hit NASCAR. When they don't, the sponsor decides to cut the $$$, the big team they were driving for drops them, they go to smaller team, do even worse, sponsor pulls the $$$.

My personal Daytona story is when my father-in-law was president of RJR and it was called the Winston Cup, we got to fly down to Daytona and before we got to the hotel, we got to take a ride around the track in a stretch limo. Imagine, doing those banked turns in a limo. They are steep! Fun times. Back when NASCAR was fun. (1980's).

I tried to figure out the physics of this Lemme 'splain the physics to you... when she notices it getting low, she asks you to do something that necessitates you taking her car. One of the hardest thing for me to get used to when I was living by myself was remembering to put gas in my car. My daddy always did it for me til I got married, then Thor took over.

Nicest guy in the world, and humble as shit. As part of his appearance, we went to a minor league hockey game, and he was only scheduled to be there until the first intermission. We were standing by the glass when someone was checked, and he went crazy. He had never been to a game and loved it. Ended up staying for the whole game, and I have never laughed harder than that night.
