Report: Al Qaeda Affiliated Terrorist Now Running US Training Base In Libya
— DrewM

Smart power!

In the summer of 2012, American Green Berets began refurbishing a Libyan military base 27 kilometers west of Tripoli in order to hone the skills of LibyaÂ’s first Western-trained special operations counter-terrorism fighters. Less than two years later, that training camp is now being used by groups with direct links to al Qaeda to foment chaos in post-Qaddafi Libya.

Last week, the Libyan press reported that the camp (named “27” for the kilometer marker on the road between Tripoli and Tunis) was now under the command of Ibrahim Ali Abu Bakr Tantoush, a veteran associate of Osama bin Laden who was first designated as part of al Qaeda’s support network in 2002 by the United States and the United Nations. The report said he was heading a group of Salifist fighters from the former Libyan base.

That probably wasn't the original plan, huh?

This is why I'm so down on the interventionist wing of the GOP. They never seem to think through what happens after they get what they want. We simply don't understand enough about the internal realities of these countries, especially the ethnic and tribal relationships and loyalties (remember the State Department was counting on local militias to help protect the Benghazi compound? And how did that work out?).

It's this bomb first, "figure out what comes next....never" attitude that had me down on Syria. I'm not saying there's never a time for the US to use military power, I'm saying let's not pretend the domestic fissures of other countries are always solvable or even improved by the application of American firepower.

I admit non-action can carry as much risk as action in the long run but a little humility about lessons learned in the last decade or so seems to be in order.

By the way, speaking of Syria....

Secretary of State John Kerry touted on Tuesday the fact that Syria had given up almost all its declared chemical weapons and would finish the process by the end-of-April deadline.

“We now have the majority percentage of chemical weapons moved out of Syria, and we’re moving on schedule to try to complete that task,” he said at a State Department event.

But events in Syria paint a more complicated picture of AssadÂ’s continued ability to kill civilians with chemical weapons.

Earlier this month, the Assad regime allegedly used chlorine gas — a weapon Syria is not required to relinquish — against civilians in the town of Kafr Zita, causing victims to suffocate, choke, vomit, foam at the mouth and develop hypertension, according to a letter from the head of the Syrian Coalition, a Western-approved opposition group, to the United Nations Security Council.

Oops.

It's almost as if when faced with existential threats to their regimes and their own lives, ruthless dictators will do whatever it takes to win and international agreements be damned.

The only way you are going to get Assad to stop using chemical weapons or killing people is to topple his regime. And if you topple his regime, well, see the story above about Libya.

There are no good answers in these hellholes. We should ruthlessly pursue our interests and security and that means keeping them fighting as long as possible.

My sanity-check moment on America getting involved in the Middle East, when I realized that Our Betters and the Top Men in the federal government just didn't have a grip on that place at all, goes all the way back to the Reagan years.

It was the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing where hundreds of Marines were killed. And where it later came out in the inquest that the sentries had been put on duty, in the most dangerous city on the entire damn planet at that time, with _unloaded weapons_.

It was at that point that I said, "To hell with this. Our policymakers either aren't intellectually equipped or don't have the balls to handle having American servicemen in those kinds of environments, so _don't send servicemen there_, full stop, end of discussion."

Oh, by the way, the senior uniformed liaison to the SECDEF at the time of the barracks bombing, who didn't express one word of concern about the sentries being effectively disarmed? You may recognize the name. Colin Powell.

I'll go you one better.  There is the Sideshow Bob effect which we are experiencing with a vengeance right now.  Back in the early years of "The Simpsons", Bart helped put Sideshow Bob in prison for robbing the Quick-E Mart and framing Crusty the Clown.  As Sideshow Bob was being hauled off he shouted "You can't keep a Democrat out of the White House forever and then I'll be back."  When Clinton was elected, Sideshow Bob returned.

Whenever Democrats achieve political power, they make it a priority to undo any military victories that have been achieved by the United States while they were out of power.  Vietnam was the first example of this that I can recall.  Obama failed to achieve a SOFA in Iraq which is now a puppet state of Iran and I don't know of anybody who thinks that things are going to work out well in Afghanistan.  Even now, Obama is trying his best to retroactively lose the Cold War.

It is kind of like the criminal justice system.  Democrats are always trying to get dangerous criminals released from prison.  The only way to prevent that is to execute criminals before Democrats can turn them loose.  I am coming to the belief that the intransigent fecklessness of Democrats means that the only way that foreign enemies can be dealt with is by nuking them since that is one thing that Democrats cannot undo.

It was the democrats in congress who refused to resupply the south when the north reactivated the war. But history never repeats, and it starts only when you become self aware, so the 'interventionist wing' of the GOP was born when that evil Reagan began arming Pakistani Jihadists to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan, and continued under those two evil shrub presidents Bush the Elder and Bush the Younger. The attack on Pearl Harbor is ancient history from long ago, and 9/11 was Bush's fault, he destroyed those towers.

84 The fact of the matter is that war is not a police action. When your opponent sees you as feckless and cautious, they will wait for you to leave. While waiting they will continue to cost you lives and fortune. War should be swift, brutal, and targeted. Kill so fast and break so much shit that your opponent sues for peace.

107 Libya under Gaddafi, after seeing what Bush did to Iraq, was a threat to no one.  And he was rational dictator.  Sure he shot and killed problem people but he was not going to export trouble.

In fact because of Iraq, Libya was turning over to the US all its chemical and nuclear material.  Now no one is saying what happened to the bunker full of liquid mustard gas that was in southern Libya or the yellow cake uranium that was stored near Tripoli.

And since this administration loves good PR, if the new Libyan government had turned that stuff over it would be on the news 24/7 on the likes of CNN.  Crowing about how smart and brilliant this administration is on foreign policy.

Note that I had occasion to say this again, essentially word for word.

When Poppy Bush had his brainstorm to send American forces into Somalia.

I pounded the table and said in most ungentle language, "This place isn't the Middle East pe se, but it's not that far away from it either in geography or in spirit, and all the same caveats apply. It's Islamic, tribal, violent, and illogical. Mogadishu is not going to magically transform into Minneapolis overnight."

(En passant: little did I even DREAM that thanks to uncontrolled immigration, a few years later, it would be Minneapolis that was transforming into Mogadishu.)

I went on to say, "If you want to send aid, which I recommend against, kick it on parachute pallets out the back of a C-141. If you need to conduct punitive military action, use a B-52 Arc Light strike, not boots on the ground. Stay the fuck out."

Anyway, the sad subsequent development of the "Black Hawk Down" events came as absolutely no surprise and underscored the point. Underscored it in blood red.

The biggest difference between Syria and Libya - the Assad family gave GWB the middle finger, while Qaddafi (or however the fuck it's spelled) feared GWB enough to give up his WMDs.

That is the dividing line on whether Team SCOAMT fucks a foreign entity over or not, not treaties, not actions taken during Teh SCOAMT's reign, not anything else.  If you didn't hinder Bush, Team SCOAMT will take you out when it gets its half-theater forces marshalled up.  If you hindered Bush, you can kill your own citizens in the most-horrific manner, have the same Islamokazis Team SCOAMT otherwise loves against you, and Team SCOAMT won't do jack shit against you.

Except the "get food to the starving" mission was a fool's errand from the get-go.

Somalia didn't have a food supply problem. Somalia had a food distribution problem. Driven by its own internal tribal politics. Starving your enemies out is Horn Of Africa 101. It's a basic strategy that goes back thousands of years.

America could pump in as much food as it wanted but never solve the misconstrued and misperceived faux-famine problems, because the aid would always get blocked and diverted internally. It's warlords all the way down.

As for lack of equipment, grunts on the ground were complaining about a lack of backup and resources pretty much from Day One of that misbegotten mission. Those became horribly visible on Clinton and Aspin's watch, but had existed from the get-go. Inherent in the concept.

The most notable use of poison gas in the modern era was chlorine gas deployed by the Germans against entrenched Canadians at the Second Battle of the Ypres. Hundreds died when the green chlorine cloud rolled over the trenches but the Canadians recovered from the initial shock and surprise and successfully held their position. Poison gas had been used by the Germans before in WWI, mainly against the Russians on the Eastern Front, as well as a few isolated instances on the Western Front that were largely experimental. The Germans later tried out sulphur chloride, for example, but this gas wasn't particularly efficient. Later in the war, mustard gas became more or less the standard: instantly fatal or debilitating effects depending on concentration and somewhat safer in handling than chlorine.

In any event, chlorine gas exposure is a horrible, ghastly way to die. It attacks soft tissue and mucous membranes, blinding its victims, destroying their lungs and drowning them in their own fluids. Meanwhile, their intestines are seared, so they're racked with vomiting and convulsions.

We should assassinate Assad, shove a cruise missile up his ass and send him to the hell that's waiting for him. If anyone could get away with it, Obama could.

218 The "small pox infected blankets" thing actually never happened. It's one of those White People Are Hitler myths. 95%+ of the Amerindian population died from the diseases brought by the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors -- but the diseases were transmitted unwittingly. The conquistadors had no idea what was happening. Average Amerindian died without ever meeting a white (or should I say "latino" or "hispanic" since the diseases were almost entirely brought by the Spanish and Portuguese). Disease traveled faster than the conquistadors did. It's why when British colonists finally arrived at North America a hundred years later, it had already been mostly depopulated.

223 It doesn't matter that no one in the world fears our military anymore and we no longer have the resources or will to defend our interests and security. Those are outdated ideas. We now have a military that promotes diversity, troops can flout their sexuality (unless they are straight), and we're focused on taking weapons systems out of submarines to make room for restrooms and other facilities to accommodate the needs of female and gender-unspecific people. Once we have wheelchair ramps on all the tanks and hospitalize everyone who has outdated ideas about fighting and killing with PTSD, we can finally have a military we can be proud of!

227 And one parting thought about Somalia and how disconnected from realities on the ground the Top Men in D.C. were:

How were the besieged forces in Mogadishu eventually safely extracted? Under armor. A column of APCs reached them.

A genuinely smart and competent military establishment would have sat up and started taking notes right there. Hey, armor can be a real asset at times in a MOUT fight, who knew? Let's start building doctrine around that, run some war games, get engineers in the loop to improve the vehicles for urban ops. (Hint hint high elevation armament.)

Nope! Not a bit of it. Lesson never was forgotten because it was never even actually learned.

Fast forward a few years to American grunts newly on the ground in Iraq getting their asses shot off in Iraqi cities for lack of proper armored protection.

Note also that the Israelis and the Russians fought urban insurgencies in the 1990s, and both concluded, and published in open source material, that holy sheepshit, man, YOU NEED ARMOR IN MOUT FIGHTS. And, it requires hard work to thus incorporate armor into tactics, but it's absolutely necessary to put in that hard work. Again: totally ignored at the Pentagon.

246 The book Explaining Hitler has this story. Hitler was blinded by English poison gas during the final days of WWI. He was in hospital when the war ended and was cast into deep depression. In Mein Kampf he describes a vision he then had in which it was revealed to him that he was to be the savior of Germany tasked with defeating the Jews. After WWII, the doctor who treated Hitler wrote a story he claimed was fiction in which a soldier whose blindness following a gas attack was psychosomatic. The doctor treated the blindness by hypnosis suggesting the soldier was destined to be the anti-Semitic savior of Germany. There is some reason to believe Hitler's blindness was psychosomatic in that he recovered both more quickly and more completely than usual. Is truth stranger than fiction?

To paraphrase one of our less-bright congressmen, that little island of Grenada was about to tip over from all of the Soviet-supplied armaments warehoused there. I was there. I saw them: so many pallets of weaponry and ammunition that the Cubans were stacking them in soccer fields and available open spaces near the newly built airport, all headed for distribution to various Soviet-sponsored groups and governments in Central and South America. Admittedly, the action on Grenada wasn't as brisk as it was in Panama a few years later, but getting shot at was no fun.  The Grenadan Guards weren't big shakes, either (although they wore amazingly nifty uniforms), but the Cubans we went up against were there to fight. So say what you want but we had boots on the ground there for good reasons and accomplished good things.

There actually are groups that do independent reports on levels of corruption. Transparency Intl, for example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index America is far, far less corrupt than Russia. The trend is, sadly, that America is becoming more corrupt -- probably due to our increased Diversity. In general, more diversity leads to more corruption. That's a major cause in Russia as well, since it is a multiethnic, polyglot empire.

Obama was raised in a Muslim country as a Muslim (his school records show this).

I don't believe that he is actually a Muslim, but you can't argue that it didn't help shape his world view. He is not an Islamist anymore then he is a Muslim, but he has taken to heart the left's bastardized understanding of the Islamist complaint with the West.

Islamists hate modern liberalism more then modern American style conservatism - the former is the exact antithesis of their world view after all. But conservativism is an existential threat to Islamism in a way that liberalism is not.

Justin is right. He was also in Afghanistan & Iraq. He came home in early 2012. When he was in Afghanistan in spring 2011 his job was to train the kids that had graduated school, they are required to join the army, to fight. The problem was that Al Queda & or the Taliban had already got to them. He would be teaching them our tricks. IÂ’m not sure what he did about that. IÂ’m sure he did the least he could to advance AQ.

380 The increasing corruption in America is a bad trend. It probably will continue though since ethnic diversity causes corruption. Earlier corrupt heydays in America, like Tammany Hall, also were the result of huge waves of immigration and antagonistic ethnic politics. The melting pot helped solve that and reduce corruption by the 50s and 60s, then we amped up immigration again and now corruption is spiking again. But still much less corrupt than a place like Russia.

Probing....

AMSTERDAM (AP) -- The Dutch defense department says several NATO member countries scrambled jets Wednesday afternoon after a pair of Russian bomber planes approached their airspace over the North Sea.

Sky.com  Two Russian surveillance planes which flew close to UK airspace have been chased away by an RAF jet fighter.

The aircraft, believed to be Tupolev 95s, were spotted off the coast of northeast Scotland.

They turned away from Britain when an RAF Typhoon was scrambled from Leuchars airbase, near Dundee, where crews are on standby to intercept unidentified aircraft at a moment's notice.

In response to all this, NIST quickly issued an announcement recommending against using Dual_EC_DRBG, but it didn't finally remove it from its random number generator recommendations until this week -- following through on an open comment process on changing its recommendations.
