Representative: Nearly One in Ten Donors to Tea Party Groups Were Audited
— Ace

Stunning, if true.

I don't know if it is true. It seems so hard to believe that anyone would be that brazen.

Despite assurances to the contrary, the IRS didn’t destroy all of the donor lists scooped up in its tea party targeting — and a check of those lists reveals that the tax agency audited 10 percent of those donors, much higher than the audit rate for average Americans, House Republicans revealed Wednesday.

...

“The committee uncovered new information indicating that after groups provided the information to the IRS, nearly one in 10 donors were subject to audit,” Rep. Charles W. Boustany Jr., Louisiana Republican and chairman of the Ways and Means Committee’s oversight panel, told IRS Commissioner John Koskinen at a hearing Wednesday.

“The abuse of discretion and audit selection must be identified and stopped,” he said.

Mr. Koskinen didnÂ’t specifically address the accusations during the hearing, and the IRS didnÂ’t respond to a request for comment late Wednesday evening.

Not even a smidgen of corruption.

41 I saw this this morning but I didn't link it.   There simply isn't enough info there to make a judgement call.  The question would be how many of Obama's OFA donors
were audited after they became a tax free non-profit.

How many donors to the NAACP are audited.

Compare the audit rate of Tea Party Donors to liberal donors of non-profits.  Not to the average American.  The average American makes somewhere around $35K a year and takes the standard deduction. Auditing them would be a real sign of the corruption.

Posted by: Vic[/i] at May 08, 2014 12:47 PM (T2V/1)

42 The Democrats have found the perfect way to implement their tyranny. You don't imprison dissidents; you don't put them in mental hospitals; you don't execute them. No, you audit them, and ridicule them, and demonize them. That was where the Soviets went wrong- by imprisoning or killing "dissidents" -and then changing what it meant to be "a dissident"- they forced the people to resist. The Democrats, however, have made it so that when they change what "a dissident" is, people simply cower and hope they're not included in the new definition. And people who do fight back? "Well, what's their problem. It's *just* an audit. The innocent have nothing to fear."

72 I should point out that 10% is a higher audit percentage (by a small but non-trivial amount) than the audit percentage of people filing returns in excess of $1,000,000. Those people only had (per grammie winger's link) 9.77% of their returns audited. For a group of people (many of them down at the <50K mark) to have a full 10% rate is obvious evidence of deliberate targeting.

77 This may be the best thing to ever happen to the cause of tax reform. IRS is thoroughly corrupted, most of the employees are members of a union that is even more Democratic and leftist than most. They ALL must go. And the only way to do a major housecleaning is reform, simplifying the code so the employees aren't needed and discretion is eliminated. Flat taxes with no deductions would also eliminate the need for the tens of thousands of "on site compliance officers" IRS has at major companies to ensure they pay the right amounts. Eliminating the whole EPA will be trickier, but is also necessary.

92 Wonder if  the VA is pulling this crap with their recertification of a veteran-owned service-disabled small business.  Suppose to have an full review every four years.  After only two years the VA is asking us for four years of business tax records, four years of personal taxes, all schedules for both, copy of stock ownership (even after they sent emails where owners certify their ownership percentage), copy of the last 20 checks (which cost $100), lease agreement, articles of incorporation, bylaws, payroll ledgers, resumes, business license(s), copy of proposals, copy of contracts, board minutes, etc.

Gave them all they request and only an hour ago found out that was not enough.  They now want job titles, cancelled checks for rent payments, more meeting minutes electing board of directors, screen captures of sba.gov and sam.gov enrollment, and NAICS.

Why?  There system shows both owners are disabled vets and that we have been a small business since 1997.  Justifying their jobs and/or harassing veterans or conservatives?  Bastards, all of them.

About ready to send them a letter and tell them to go fcuk themselves, but we need the certification to compete for non-existent contracts.

Mandatory auditing of all public officials and their families for time in office and following ten years after leaving office, the results of which all become public information.  All of this work is to be performed by the people put out of work when the IRS is shut down.

133 Before the income tax amendment was pass during the "progressive era" (which has never ended the federal government was funded through three major sources.

Funds derived from State government who taxed their citizens.

Tariffs on imported good which fell mainly on the South.

Sale of government lands.

They were not able to get a lot of income (compared to now) so government, by necessity, was kept small.

Passing the income tax amendment was a colossal mistake.

He sent an email to a state senator [an R],telling him he would 'dig into his background and make him sorry' if he didn't pass something to prevent the UN gun-ban treaty. Posted by: wheatie at May 08, 2014 04:59 PM (l/M30) Agree on all counts. He ought to appeal it, It wasn't blackmail, and he shouldn't have said it. My methods are to never make threats. Making threats implies that you are weak, and that you are hoping that your mouthing off at someone will intimidate them into doing what you want. Threats only reinforce stubbornness. Never make threats. Make examples. Keep it legal, of course, (which is getting harder and harder to figure out when it comes to "Speech" nowadays) but speak softly and carry a big stick. Sometimes you have to use the stick to demonstrate to people that you have one. He should get his crew to walk the precincts for the opposition candidate, even if it's a Democrat.

I don't think moving the Senators elections to the people instead of the State legislature caused as many problems as people claim.  The State legislatures were fairly corrupt and the deal making was huge.  What really needs to happen with all elections is to limit political contributions to citizens and businesses located within the physical area represented by the office being ran for.  IOW a guy running for SC Senator would only be able to take money from people and businesses in SC.  Running for Mayor would mean funds only come from the city limits where you are running.

All that being said, passing the income tax amendment was the death knell of small government.

The audit rate gets exponentially higher the higher one's income is. And you have to figure people who have money to donate to politicians are making higher (much higher) than average incomes. Plus tea party members tend to be even more high income...hence the **TAXED ENOUGH** part of TEA. People who pay no income tax don't give a fuck what the tax rate is. 263 Under my plan that would be illegal. Of curse it is currently illegal to get donations from outside the country and the Democrats ignore that. Posted by: Vic at May 08, 2014 05:26 PM (T2V/1) Exactly. Laws and regulations only codify what honest people were going to do anyway. No amount of laws will regulate dishonesty.

267 Here's how they would do it. They would use the 80/20 rule and know that 20% of donors provided 80% of the funds. They would then assign a dollar cut-off, say $1,000, and then cull the list this way. If they were clever they would then add in some small donors to make it look more kosher. But probably a good stat person can catch this.

269 259 Cavuto handed him his ass with butterscotch topping for the weakness of his arguments, but didn't say anything about the mispronunciation.

You mean he didn't axe Rangel about the pronounciation.. Posted by: Soona

As a general rule, I find Cavuto annoying because he does what so many of the talk show hosts do, i.e., constantly interrupt the guest while he's speaking.  In this case, though, he made Rangel look like a lying imbecile, whose biggest problem was that he couldn't lie more effectively.

276 If we got Rick Perry for Potus, then we could have both.

Perry has repeatedly said that he would like to "Make the Federal Government as inconsequential in our lives as possible".

Which is just a smarter way of saying "burn it down'.

I know someone who works for the IRS.

He is one of the biggest assholes I've ever met in my entire life.

I can see him at work, taking glee in fucking someone over badly.

I bet he would even laugh about it.

282 I was audited as well. I give to conservative groups. I wondered. I'm waiting to get audited again this year. My son makes less than $50,000 a year. He got a letter the irs is reviewing his return. What are the odds.

Posted by: CaliGirl at May 08, 2014 02:30 PM (KU72u)

283 i didn't donate, but my previously submitted, and, i might add, adjusted by the IRS prior to refund, taxes were pulled, re-reviewed, and my refund rescinded, with penalties and interest being added.

my better 2/3rds, who isn't as vocally political as i, but who obviously shares the same address with me, has recently had old filings pulled, reviewed and additional taxes levied.

then there's the Failifornia FTB, who still believes that, because i keep a professional certificate valid, i'm earning the average salary for someone employed under such a certificate, despite the lack of W-2s or 1099's being submitted.  they keep sending me letters threatening legal action and demanding i pay taxes on said imaginary earnings.

285 It's not the Democrat gang of thieves it's the media. After Lewinsky they will actively look the other way so that they don't even accidentally stumble onto Democrat lawlessness. Never forget that they pushed Obamacare's obvious lies for years, and still haven't given an explanation for their behavior (and, really, what explanation can they give except the obvious - partisan hacks). Even scumbags need enablers.

Posted by: IRS at May 08, 2014 04:20 PM (XWQcf)

287 Ha! For this reason, I no longer make donations to any right-leaning groups of any kind. I do not sign any petitions, and I am registered as an independent. I will never join any right leaning group, donate any money, or participate in any political activism of any kind until a law is passed that protects political donors from the power of the state. If a law is passed making political affiliation and donations anonymous, then I will donate again and join groups with whom I share beliefs. I will, however, vote with great passion in the privacy of my little booth, at least until they make the votes public, too. Sorry, I am not going to have my whole life destroyed over politics. It's too bad the Repubes let the Dems destroy the freedom of political affiliation. And it's too bad the Repubes are too cowardly to stand up for the citizen as he cowers under the shadow of an ever encroaching and all-powerful state.
