Back in the day of the Equal Rights Amendment, a Chicago columnist, I can't remember who, wrote that if feminists really wanted to get Illinois to ratify the amendment, they would just bribe them rather than trying to persuade them.

A few months later, there was a minor scandal when an Illinois legislator reported that some feminist had offered him several thousand dollars to vote for the ERA.  The columnist explained that the legislator had been scared off by the size of the bribe.  They should offer $300 for a vote like that.

The theory that I have heard is that it is the human equivalent of hibernation.  Depressed people lose their appetite, sleep a lot and don't want to get out of bed.  These are very good strategies for survival if you live in a hostile semi-arctic climate where food and firewood are likely to be scarce in the dead of winter.  Evolution does not really care if you are happy.

SD is still semi-sane, but pretty much overwhelmed with the soft forms of stupidity and degradation common in what was once America.  So that even those who might out of inertia or cultural ID vote GOP are mostly awash in illiterate "environmental" sensitivity, or extremely vulnerable to the idiotic racist lever of imbecilic guilt.  So you get "Republicans" like Arnold.

Also, there is the idiocy that is CA in general weighing on everything.  The San Onofre nuke plant is being shut down with over 40 years of useful (and perfectly safe) life still in it, thanks to the idiocy of the populace and the cretinous "senator" Boxer - so if the local utilities commission doesn't approve a previously rejected natural gas plant, we'll have one more reduction in basic energy infrastructure to serve a growing population (though stagnant economy, esp. in terms of anything outside mundane services or health/technology).

And Moo Moo there's not much of the area that resembles LA.  If by that you mean the peculiar feel that arises in much of the LA area from the density of development.  SD just doesn't have that in many places.

Climate is nearly perfect, as is no secret.  Best in North America, anyway.  But some of us are scouring the web for skiable x-c snow somewhere in the west - when perfect weather is the norm about 90% of the time, it's fun to "visit" actual weather elsewhere for fun.  Wish Quebec wasn't so damn far away - always tons of dry snow at near sea-level.  Nordic skiing at 6,000 feet is a bit discouraging for those who can't do it on a weekly basis.

200 Sorry; Having seasonal affective disorder does not automatically make
one a "weepy little crybaby" nor does it happen every Spring and Fall.
Some people are more affected by it than others The term has been around
for a while. You have it and you either take medication and/or use a
lamp or try to get exercise and get out in the sun.

We think of Europe as being over there to the right, but it's really over to the right and way higher up than us.  I lived in Germany and the winter was fecking depressing.  Sun up at 10, down a 4.

205 Best tip to avoid the winter time blues. Embrace the suck. Get out and do something. Go skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, play hockey, snowmobile, go for a damn walk! I am one of the few who enjoys winter because I do all of the above when I can. This weekend I am snowshoeing in and winter camping and doing some ice fishing. It's actually fun with the right gear and reminds you that you're human and not meant to spend all your time inside behind a screen or TV. Yes, booze helps too but that's a side bennie!

How about you phrase the question with something other than platitudes?

What specifically do you want them to do?  "Fight" means nothing.

Or do you believe that our Elite Betters in DC are the only ones capable of proposing a specific course of action that our puny monkey brains are incapable of comprehending?

279 "The Marine Corps Times reported itÂ’s been removed from cash register shelves at the front of Marine base exchanges.  The Marine Corps explained it is part of the Corps effort to further “professionalize” the force.  The publication which is independent of the Corps has featured several stories critical of the Marine Commandant and his handling of the Marine Corp urination video case."

280 I hope nobody thinks this is an indication of a shift in the electorate or any republican surge.

Hollowpoint:

We have one house of congress.  The House of Representatives.  That body specifically has the power of the purse.  It's in the Constitution.

I want them to defund what is unconstitutional.  I want them to demand concessions.  I want them to shutdown the government if the President refuses to compromise.

That is what I want.  We keep bitching about "cards", but we refuse to playing the fucking hand we're holding.

286 I live in San Diego and I'm registered Democrat (bad habits are hard to break). Though I voted for Romney, I told all the pollsters I was voting for Bambi. I got a flood of Bambi calls and letters until a couple days after I mailed my absentee ballot. The Bambi org. was monitoring EVERYTHING.

This election, I said I was voting Alvarez. I kept getting calls and letters right up to election day, though I mailed my absentee ballot two weeks earlier. I also got four calls from different pro-Alvarez groups on election day asking if I'd voted.

Bambi.org was very thorough, but this "organized labor" effort was VERY disorganized. The lesson is, some candidates have top orgs running the show, but most of the Democratic effort consists of amateurs. I imagine the same could be said of Republicans. If each candidate doesn't have a top-level org, it doesn't matter how much money the independent supporters have or what they do.
