Richard Sherman: I'm Better Than You, Skip Bayless
— Ace

Count de Monet linked this in the comments. Apparently sports goof Skip Bayless had challenged Sherman's assertion that he was the best in the league at his position. (Apparently his pronouncement is now substantially vindicated, as one commentator (Troy Aikman?) did call him the league's best corner last night.)

Many commenters have said Sherman's trash-talk is certainly not isolated to post-game adrenaline rushes. I don't know anything about the man -- I just heard of him yesterday. (I stopped watching football a year ago.)

At any rate, his trash-talking occurs during moments of perfect clarity as well.

I... look, I think I'm locked into my previous position now (having taken a position, my ego is invested, and now I resolve all questions in favor of my original position), but I gotta say, I don't really know who this Skip Bayless character is, apart from some kind of sports reporter, and I just love a reporter being told "I'm better than you" to his face.

The man has a healthy ego. Let's just say that.

7 Bayless is a dick. So is Sherman. Two dicks fighting to see who is a bigger dick. I also predict that Bayless, despite his personal history with Sherman, will accuse America of being racist for getting annoyed at Sherman.

8 This is a grown man that goes by 'Skip'. How serious would you take him if he challenged you?

16 People tell me all the time that they are better than me.

But now, with my obamacare, my psychiatrist can make me feel better about myself for free!  I can even call to make an appointment with my free obamaphone - even while I'm doing other things like buy liquor with my free EBT card.

Posted by: LoneStarHeeb at January 20, 2014 10:41 AM (BZAd3)

17 Skip Bayless is a tool and always says something shocking to generate ratings. I think years ago Troy Aikman refused to speak to ESPN if Bayless was still employed there. I think Sherman is trying to make a name for himself too, with his antics.

19 IMHO, I thought Sherman running off with the trophy, like he won it himself, as opposed to it being a team effort, was the most obnoxious thing he did last night.

Posted by: wiserbud at January 20, 2014 10:42 AM (NXg/k)

20 Oi. Well, in fairness, he probably is better than Skip whoever. But making an ass of oneself is never a Good Plan(TM).

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at January 20, 2014 10:43 AM (PYAXX)

21 I further predict that multiple ESPN talked heads will somehow tie in America getting all racist and angry at Sherman with ... MLK day. I predict many a tenuous and dumbass analogy. It's MLK day and the sports controversy of the hour is whether America is afraid of an outspoken black man speaking the truth. White America - Threat or Menace?

22 I like this Sherman guy. OK, his rant was...loud. But people are calling him a thug for it? Really? I thought one had to commit a crime or bully someone to be a thug. And I thought only Leftists hollowed out definitions of words and inserted new ones.

I certainly prefer the term "punk" to "thug" in this case. As you mention- they have specific meanings. And, yes, I think he's a punk. I think he lacks class. Seeing Bayless get smacked down by anyone is worth the time.

Posted by: CoderInCrisis at January 20, 2014 10:45 AM (BAEzE)

29 First Take is a shitty show that always matches Bayless against a black guy to argue over something about. Usually devolves into a shouting match and most of it is probably staged bullshit for ratings.

32 Often, athletes at the top of their game (not saying Sherman is, but he's damned good) are not nice people. Their drive to win is well beyond what most of us would consider normal. Some can turn it off when they leave the field/court/track, some cannot. It seems to be a common thread among the best of the best. I've missed all of the comments since this morning (stupid job), but has Pete Carroll's alleged 9/11 trutherism been brought up yet?

46 >>> like this Sherman guy. OK, his rant was...loud. But people are calling him a thug for it? Really? I thought one had to commit a crime or bully someone to be a thug. we seem to be turning a momentary lapse into some sort of transgression. Thing is, everyone would excuse HIMSELF for a similar lapse. We all enforce our rules and our critiques on each other. But sometimes we apply what I call the Vindictive Standard -- no latitude, no give, no slack. We do this with people we don't like. The left does it to the right with, say, gay-baiting slurs. If someone on the right makes the vaguest allusion to homosexuality, he's a H8r. But then they give themselves all sorts of latitude to suggest their opponents are queerz, don't they? At any rate, I'm in favor of more consistent standards and I'm against the selective enforcement of the Vindictive Standard against people we don't like. My take is: if we'd shrug off our OWN minor transgressions in this area, we have to equally shrug off someone else's. If all we'd say of ourselves is "I gotta watch my anger and my mouth next time," that's really the limit of what we should say about another person But most people don't. Selective enforcement of the Vindictive Standard -- a double-standard permitting us to enjoy criticizing harshly the same behavior we more than countenance in ourselves -- is as human as eating, sleeping, or sex.

Compare racists saying racist things about Sherman to non-racists saying non-racist things about Sherman. Imply the non-racists saying non-racist things are just better at hiding their true motivations. I have no doubt a lot of anti-white racist shit was said yesterday on twitter about Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, too. A quick search and I found multiple racists on twitter telling Brady and Manning they are faggot-ass white boys who should go fuck themselves. Shocker. Funny, Deadspin has no articles on the racial hate directed at Brady or Manning on twitter yesterday.

80 >>we seem to be turning a momentary lapse into some sort of transgression. His reaction may have been a bit over the top but I repeat Sherman has always been like this. He has always gone out of his way to self-promote, it's his shtick. The only reason most people don't know this is because he's in Seattle and until recently nobody gave a crap about the Seahawks. If he had played on a consistent contender or in a major market this wouldn't have been a blip on the radar. And there is a lot of hate not just between Crabtree and Sherman but the Hawks and 49ers. They flat out do not like each other and have been yapping for a couple years now. I couldn't care less about his "outburst" since I know it was as much shtick as actual anger.

re: the heroic portrayal of Cassius Clay

This is obvious, no? Because Cassius Clay was a lightning rod who brought out the worst in the Worst. As mentioned above, Sherman's antics seemed to trigger an ugly ignorant response in a few people.

The Media (and the Fuck With Normal Left Wing) loves this theater. They thrive on it. They use dopes like Sherman and Clay to get eyeballs glued to the TV screens.

There are people in the world whose careers astonish me. Just the fact that they have them at all, I mean. Bayless is certainly one, but Jim Rome is my go-to example. He does a decent interview, I'll give him that much, but I can not for the life of me understand what anyone sees in him. There are lots of other people that could do interviews just as well.

As for Costas, well, it's best not to get my blood pressure up too soon. The Olympics are coming up and I'll have to put up with his know-it-all condescension for two solid weeks.

Who cheated and dorked up USCs college program and left them holding the bag, and who interrogates a four star general about the "inside job" of the 911 attack on the Pentagon. He is not a nice guy. He is an asshole. I would much rather judge him

93 Skip Bayless looks like he's had a LOT of plastic surgery. I think I'd enjoy giving him a beating. I still enjoy watching the clip of Jim Everett knocking the table over to threaten Jim Rome. Which, as said above, should be standard procedure for all reporters.

106 See, I didn't care about Sherman. He's an athlete. He is paid to catch a ball and run with it. He is not paid to (say) develop a thoughtful and nuanced policy in regards to Shia Islam in Lebanon. (Someone should really ask him about this by the way.)

I cared more about the coaches: one of whom has offered some thoughtful and nuanced views upon American policy, which I hear involves hijacking our own airliners and slamming them into our own policy. The other one was just an insane and histrionic douche.

Sherman's full of himself but he's an NFL player - a hyper-competitive attitude (which helps a lot of these players keep their jobs) is often fed by that kind of ego and trash talk.  Maybe after he retires he'll calm down enough to at least acknowledge that he's being a jerk, if not really feel sorry about it.

I always wanted someone to come up with a Straight Eye for the Queer Guy show.

The straight guy would show the queer guy how to order a scotch and water and not drink it with a straw. Teach him how to dance without raising his hands above his shoulders, etc.

But that's hetero-normative...

Nah, I can't finish that thought. I had the same idea the first time I saw Queer Eye.

174 14 Awww-kwerd. Great takedown. Enjoyed muchly the black host watching quietly allowing it to develop without interfering. Excellent. Yep, that was a great takedown; I enjoyed it a lot. Sherman--who's paid to play football--stayed calm and stayed on point, while the annoying guy--who's paid to interview people--got testy and trite.

175 The fact that he couldn't just let it speak for itself suggests some sort of insecurity, or that it's an act. This sounds suspiciously like the Media saying "Romney wouldn't let us report on Benghazi". The act does speak for itself. Everything else is its own event.

176 Very well done against "Skip".  Having never seen him, Bayless struck me as an  elitist, arrogant, asshole.  Big Time.  Sherman, little rough but more eloquent than most of his ilk, i.e., non-QB football players [black and white, lest I denounce myself.]

192 Ali had a way with words, no doubt. Which is why the Nation of Islam wanted him as a member and spokesman. There's funny old video of his handlers talking about all the superpowers that Ali had now cause he's a muslim. How the white man and the Christian man couldn't understand it cause it was advanced black muslim technology that Ali now possessed. It was in some Ali glorifying documentary I saw once. I think it was as Ali was starting to slow down and age and the reporters were asking questions about his training and his handlers babbled about how he only looked slower now to outsiders cause they couldn't see the magical black muslim powers that Ali could call upon. It was some funny racial, religious bigotry BS. I think they honestly believed it.

207 http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/368898/how-low-can-east-asia-go-michael-auslin ItÂ’s not a perfect analogy, but imagine a militarily powerful Canada, AmericaÂ’s largest trading partner and neighbor, erecting a memorial to John Wilkes Booth. ThatÂ’s more or less what China did last week, when it unveiled an exhibit and memorial to the Korean independence activist who assassinated JapanÂ’s first prime minister, Hirobumi Ito, in 1909. A century after the fact, these are usually things that nations try to put behind them. Not in East Asia, where insult after insult is lobbed back and forth across the East China and Yellow Seas among Japan, South Korea, and China. ItÂ’s almost as if these nations were trying to convince themselves to fight.

How do you measure the dimensions of one's soul?
----------------------------------------------------
Douglas Adams described this in one of the Hitchhiker's Guide books - it was a form of capital punishment called the "Total Perspective Vortex":

When you are put into the Vortex you are given just one momentary glimpse of the entire unimaginable infinity of creation, and somewhere in it a tiny little mark, a microscopic dot on a microscopic dot, which says, "You are here."

The idea is that the mind couldn't deal with the vastness of the universe and his own insignificance, thus reducing the victim to a drooling wreck. It didn't work on Zaphod Beeblebrox, though - all it did was reinforce his belief that in all the Universe, he was the most important thing in it.

237 I think China's long term strategy is to make sure Japan and Korea don't unify in an anti-China bloc with America. I think ideally they'd like Korea to become a client state of China, but the immediate goal is to prevent the formation of a solid, functioning Asian NATO-style military alliance. Fanning ethnic hatred between Japan and Korea is an excellent Chinese tactic since Japan and Korea would form the basis of any such alliance. I'm sure Russian wishes they had been better at fanning the flames of Franco-German resentment.

The trash talking and disrespect shown by athletes (some of the most respected and admired members of our society, unfortunately) has been emulated by kids of several generations, but not just in sport. This nastiness, this lack of respect, this attitude of "destroy and demoralize" has crept into all aspects of our society, and is most visible as practiced by the left against anyone not in lockstep with them. As much as anything, I blame the poor sportsmanship of the last 50 years for the decline in civility in this nation. It has been the main vehicle.

255 Indeed, Skip Bayless is the biggest douchebag in all of sports journalism. And considering that group sadly includes Olberman, that's quite a feat. Bayless has a habit of glomming onto a significant team, player, or franchise, finding the most outrageous accusation about them and writing a tell-all book. In Dallas his thing was that Troy Aikman was gay. And he got run out of Dallas. Then he parasitically attached himself to the Michael Jordan Bulls... and got run out of Chicago. He's nothing but a tabloid sports radio personality. Perfect for ESPN to attract viewers because he'll say the most controversial thing possible at all times. It doesn't surprise me at all that he would jump into the Sherman thing and say something retarded. That's what he does.

Posted by: Uncle Jefe at January 20, 2014 04:43 PM (Hi24w) ----- This vulgarity is (helping to) destroy polite society, and I am not talking about swear words, per se. It is ugly and corrosive and spreading everywhere. There are a few things to blame - entertainment, especially black "culture," leftists and public corruption. Nothing is respected anymore. No one is respected, except thugs and leftists. Manners, decorum, chivalry, sportsmanship, honor - it is all fading away and mocked by the left and the thugs.

259 Stephen A Smith is hilarious, you just have to know it's an act. He and Bayless get into some pretty funny riffs. Mel Kiper has Johnny Manziel going number 1 in the draft to the Houston Texans.

261 This video just makes me like Sherman more than I already did.

262 ... any day a person makes a sports reporter look like a fucking idiot is a good day in my book.

Posted by: skinnydipinacid at January 20, 2014 04:58 PM (WuCLB)

263 I just saw this for the first time. No matter what you think of Skip Bayless, that is the most classless thing I've ever seen in my life. I really don't understand how anyone on hear could defend him. Sherman is a disgusting human being for that display. I'm just flabbergasted that any of you think it was ok since he was going after an annoying sports reporter.

264 Did anyone call him uppity yet? And why doesn't "Malevolent, diminutive white man injures large black man" get its own post?

265 WTF is with you people? I read the comments and then watched the video. I expected Sherman threw a chair and / or screamed at the sports reporter with edited audio.

When did the angel of castration descended on this blog?

266 Richard Sherman: I'm Better Than You, Skip Bayless That's true, but not saying to much. Let's face it: I'm better than Skip Bayless, and so are most morons.

267 So Busta Rhymes changed his name to Richard Sherman? Or was that his real name all along?
