"Rising Star" Congressional Republican Jumps into Senate Race to Unseat Democrat Mark Udall
— Ace

Udall is perceived as weak, but this seat wasn't viewed as a likely pickup because of a perceived "weak field."

Cory Gardner is apparently considered strong. He had apparently refused previous attempts to recruit him for this race because he was rising in the House leadership and I guess he felt like a sure thing is better than a risky one.

But he's been jawboned into getting into the race. Or maybe he thinks Udall is so weak that this bid isn't quite so risky as it once seemed.

Various politics-watchers on Twitter, @HotlineJosh, @AaronBlakeWP, @TheFix, call this either a "game changer" or a "huge recruitment" for the GOP.

CAC will post this when his erection is no longer sore.

By the way, for anyone still saying "It doesn't matter who wins or loses" or "I'd actually prefer to lose" or that sort of thing, let Harry Reid congratulate you on your dubious wisdom.

Is there a rule that says you can't run for both?  I'm thinking of Joe Biden running for re-election the same year he ran for VP.

In the longer term, that might not be the case, the Iron Range is no longer so monolithically Dem, which leaves the Twin Cities as their vote source. I see the Minnesota trend toward third parties as disillusionment with the DFL (Democrat) party.

I started in Game of Thrones mode, like Bill Hurt in The Big Chill, "sometimes you just have to let art wash over you".  I don't keep track of fueds and dynasties in GoT, I just relish the medievalry and dragons and titties.  Now, with all that's built up, True Detective is really worth paying attention to. Analyzing. Talking about.  Rewatching feverishly.

194 re: Hollywood Hollywood is suffering partly due to ideology but largely due to 1. Creative exhaustion. I cannot give a F*** about the stupid shit they make now. I'm not a 13 year old. They don't make movies for me. (I wouldn't mind seeing a movie for my inner 17 year old but it still needs to be at a sophisticated 17-year-old level). 2. Technology. Hollywood has been threatened by television since the 50s. It's an intriguing history if you don't know it. Half of Hollywood's technical exertions (Technicolor, surround sound, 3D, etc.) were done explicitly to contrast movies with tv and get people back into the the theaters. Technology is now at the point where there is a very, very low advantage to seeing a movie in the theater, even if it's a great theater without any problems or annoying attendees. In most cases, movies are not shown at great theaters, and there are problems (with sound or poor projection), and other attendees are annoying, so an HDTV is usually a better viewing experience. Movies provide a btter THEORETICAL viewing experience, but it's only theoretical, and it's a pain in the ass. The movie exhibition business will be transformed within 5-10 years. There will barely be anything on movie screens, except for big event things.

195 >>I may ban people for unhinged anger and resentment. <<

Honestly, it is primal frustration.

I've made cogent, well-formed arguments for years. Part of what I do for a living involved unceasing negotiation and strategy.

In response to some of those well-formed arguments people scream RINO! and Principles!

The inability to at least create a strategy in place of just burning and pillaging everything is simply stunning.

Many of these people don't want to do the hard work. I understand the sentiment. We've been doinked up the squeakhole by Washington for years. They are collectively destroying us. I get it. I empathize.

But the strategy to actually win by doing what is possible is inconceivable to some. It purely pathos and primal. It's reactionary not sensible.

People say they want to burn it down. You wanna know what that looks like? Look at the Ukraine. See those dead protesters? That is what it ultimately comes down to. Who is really willing to do that? You gonna be that guy? I think a lot of people are betting it can't happen here. But it can. And most of them would be running the other way when the shooting starts.

Anyway, apologies for the negativity Ace.

Media isn't as expensive out here as it is in the NE, and there's polling showing him ahead of Udall already, so raising money isn't going to be an issue.

I actually do know Cory, and trust me, he wouldn't have given up his seat unless he thought this was doable.

227 oh when I say "Hollywood" is dead I mean theatrical exhibitions and much of the "movie" form. Television and downloads will be the main form of delivery. Unshackled from the theater's requirement of single two-hour show times, the format will permit multi-episode "movies." True Detective is essentially a long movie in 8 52 minute pieces. Thus the format will have more give in it, as far as the short series (very long movie) and such.

237 We have to look at these races individually. In each case in each case, it's "compared to what. I read somewhere this morning harping on the tea party for O'Donnell and Akin. O'Donnell is a fair cop, but Akin wasn't the tea party guy and it's not their fault he was an idiot. So in SC, it makes perfect sense to primary Graham or in any state (or district) where the electorate is to the right of the office holder and is a safe R state. Can we do better than Ayotte in NH? Maybe not and we should therefore tolerate her occasional straying. Numbers matter. If we had 51 in the Senate right now, there are a lot of problems we could stop, especially in appointments. As always, McCain/Graham, etc. can cause problems. But they can stick together on important issues when they are sufficiently pressured. If we had more numbers, we'd still be disappointed, maybe frequently, but things wouldn't be as bad as they are.

244 >>>I highly recommend the experience. And they don't rake you over the coals on the prices. Well I see this as a niche thing, which can continue, as they're adding value. Yes, there will always be cinemas for cinephiles, but that doesn't change the prediction that the main vehicle for seeing movies is home tv, and this trend will accelerate, until only a fraction of the biggest or most "Big Screen Necessary" movies (like Gravity) will be in cinemas in most parts of the country. A few months after a movie is released, you can watch it at home.  You can sit on your couch, take off your shoes, eat and drink whatever you want, pause it whenever you    want, and actually enjoy it.

Or, you can wait in line, pay outrageous prices for a limited selection of snacks, listen to children    yelling, and listen to some fat chick talking on     her cell phone throughout the movie.

Your choice.

268 I don't know Ace. I was just a theatre in Colorado last weekend called Cinebistro, which combines pretty darn good food and films. They serve dinner at your seat (and the seats are like first class airplane seats), including drinks, and then you watch a movie. The popcorn was excellent too. The place was packed, despite big prices. I asked the manager how they do on week nights and he told me they are booming, including on what are normally off-nights for theaters.

276 For Marcus and his brothers only. Not for the Holly-douches. I'm serious- the best part of the movie, the part every single person watched in silence, were the closing credits where they showed pictures of the real-life SEALS who died. The actors playing them though? Might as well have named them Generic SEAL #1, Generic SEAL #2, etc. And it wasn't really the fault of the actors. Hollywood has become obsessed by visuals and cinematics to the point of ignoring the basics- plot, character development, dialog, etc.

278 Joe- The issue is, which seat is 'safer' and less at risk for the D's. Gov is- and which is MOST necessary for the D's in the state- the Senate one is. Recall this- one current Senator, Bennett, was in a 'safe' position with the current admin- they talked him into a run and backed him. Also, Udall would have to look VERY weak- at this point he isn't. Again, too much cash available. AND name recognition. Next: they moved Romanoff into Mike Coffman's district in order to unseat him (after they gerrymandered it). The D's will do ANYTHING in this state to win. Plus, revenge for removing 2 state politicians is at stake.

281 The studio finance model is going to fail, and soon. There is still a cultural aspect of going to a show with a crowd, but as young people now go cradle to grave with their eyes and ears plugged into some sort of device, the theatre experience may also go the way of the Dodo.

Sad in a way.

282 Well I see this as a niche thing, which can continue, as they're adding value. Yes, there will always be cinemas for cinephiles, but that doesn't change the prediction that the main vehicle for seeing movies is home tv. I don't disagree with any of this, and it has probably been true that TV has been the main vehicle for seeing movies since the VCR became widespread enough to support the existence of the video store. And of course DVDs displaced that and then streaming replaces that. But I think that what Alamo is doing is making that difference, of why you get off your couch and your investment in a big screen and home theater sound system. They won't all go that way, of course, but I bet we see a lot more of it. The regular multiplex moviehouse, though, is pretty much doomed.

284 Movies provide a btter THEORETICAL viewing experience, but it's only theoretical, and it's a pain in the ass.

I'm at the age where "pausing to get/recycle a beverage" outweighs "really huge screen and obnoxiously loud sound." /getoffmylawn

I'm also watching mostly foreign and classic films (and comic book films, so I understand the memes here).  And I would go see showings of epic classic films in theaters, if theaters did that more often and not just on Tuesday mornings when I'm at work.  Ho-hum.

288 If we are nearing the end of the multiplex, shouldn't we be seeing that in the data already? Box office revenue is at an all time high. Many people no longer find the theater experience satisfying, but many do. Two groups in particular still go the movies -- young people and families. And it's no surprise that the hit movies are the big event movies that appeal primarily to ... young people and families. Hollywood is still making event movies that are getting people to go to the theaters. Hollywood is surrendering the cultural heights to high status TV shows in many ways, but it's still an $11B annual domestic market, $35B globally.

Norm started out ahead when the recount started IIRC, then Dem votes suddenly appeared out of car trunks and were never really challenged, recounts in certain Counties were stopped with the OK of Norm's side, and of course something like 2500 felons were documented as voting Dem illegally but Norm or his lawyers didn't want to fight that. It was a disgrace IMHO. Given away.

Question of whether TV or theater remains the main delivery vehicle for the first showing of most "movies." I agree there will be theaters around for a while longer, but only for movies like The Avengers III or movies in 3D or with some major visual scope. Or kid's movies. Or teenager's movies-- teenagers go to the movies chiefly to get out from under their parents noses. There will be a very major shift, though, as more major screen actors and major directors begin shifting towards non-theatrical "movies" or short series.

I can build a budget home theater for about $2,000 that would knock your socks off. That's the cost of 20 movies for a family of four.

In a few years 80" screens will be commonplace, so the viewing experience in the home will be equal to all but the most cutting-edge theaters.

Hell, my several-years-old sound system has better surround sound than any theater I have ever been in except one in NYC.

337 Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 26, 2014 05:31 PM (QFxY5) The condo my grandparents-in-law bought had a built in home theater. Stadium seating and everything. Didn't have seats, but they're going to put in bean bags and sofa's. It even has the diming side sconces. I'd augment it with a little better projector, but TBH, that'd be less than a grand improvement.

342 I like viewing a movie at home. I'm one of those sad individuals whose every sense is magnified in a theater. The rustling of cellophane, the sniffing, the coughing, the talking and saying stupid shit for no reason, it's like I have superpowers in a theater. It's horrible.

343 I'm thinking the self-selected group of crowd-hating introverted engineer types that gather round these parts might not be the Hollywood target market. So the appeal of the Hollywood event movie, which many if not most people enjoy, is lost on them. Most people enjoy being in the know and having that shared cultural experience and seeing the hot movie that everybody is talking about. Trust me, every little girl in America had, had, had to go see Frozen. And they did. Many times. No tween girl wanted to be the only one who hadn't seen it when all the other girls are singing Let it Go at school.

358 Hell, my several-years-old sound system has better surround sound than any theater I have ever been in except one in NYC. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 26, 2014 05:31 PM (QFxY5) Yep, whereas we spent a bit more than the $2K you quoted, I would never go to the theater again. We can make the entire house feel like it is in an airplane, on a train, or inside that lead car in a car chase. The surround sound is pretty cool. Hearing the plates, or utensils, or chatter, etc in the background. As far as 3D, we have the 3D setup, with the decent glasses that came with the TV, and they work really well. I just don't care for 3D that much. So gimmicky. For a science documentary, maybe. It's pretty cool to see 3-Dimensional graphs and such. Or 3D models of extinct animals.

367 >>>t's hard to beat the movie theater experience... but a 55" TV screen and surround sound system comes close enough most of the time. It's hard to beat the movie experience *under ideal conditions.* Proper projection, new bulb that isn't dim and doesn't flicker, proper sound, middle of theater, not so much stink or noise. How often do you actually get that ideal condition experience, though? When I go out to movies, I expect that (after all, I'm making the trip), and I get, perhaps, unreasonably angry when I don't get it. This is why I don't like movie theaters anymore. In theory, they can deliver the best-quality picture and sound. But you only occasionally get that in reality. I'd rather see a movie on HDTV and know in advance I'm getting a less-bright, less sharp picture and less powerful sound then go out to a theater expecting a superior experience in those areas and getting instead a dim bulb.

Agreed. I purchased my first large screen, flat-panel TV just last month, and even with just front channel sound the experience is superior to any recent movie theater I've seen. It is extremely frustrating to go to a movie, with all the anticipation involved, and when it starts the image is out of focus or the bass and surrounds were never turned on.

375 "There is still a cultural aspect of going to a show with a crowd..."

That depends. If the audience has shared culture and values, yes. I've experienced that in some classical music venues and other shows. But in a movie, unless it is aimed at a very narrow audience, you're more likely to be crowded in with people you'd rather not know and with whom you have nothing in common. In that case, I'd rather watch at home.

"Love it -- it's going to be a millstone around the necks of all Dems for Reid to basically call anyone hurt by Obamacare a liar."

Yep. And they're going to be saying "Liar, liar, pants on fire!" a lot between now and Nov., because more and more people are going to come forward and say how much they've been screwed by Ocare. And hopefully, the most braindead LIV will realize that the Koch brothers aren't funding all these people. By November, many Americans will have heard horror stories from their neigbhors and relatives or they'll have their own tales to tell.

So, I really applaud this strategy by the Dems. I really want them to continue telling cancer patients and working people like that bunch in Pittsburgh that they're all liars and getting money from the Kochs.
