Rubio Rips Cuba, Venezuela, and Useful Idiot Senator Tom Harkin
— Ace

Background and more at Hot Air.

Hot Air also provides a written transcript-- read that if you can't watch the video, but favor the video. It's well delivered.

For those who loved Rubio, but then became deeply disappointed -- let him remind you why you used to like him.

Thanks to @aoshqDOOM (Monty).

Meanwhile, Michael C. Moynihan poses some hypothetical questions:

A pro-Chavez academic writing in The Nation argued that the massive street demonstrations across the country “have far more to do with returning economic and political elites to power than with their downfall.” The Guardian headlined a news story: “Venezuela's hardliner reappears as Nicolas Maduro expels US officials.” That hardliner wasn’t Maduro, whose government is arresting regime opponents and strangling the free press, but Leopoldo Lopez, the opposition leader currently languishing in jail....

ItÂ’s a thought experiment I often present to the Western Chavista... [What if] Prime Minister David Cameron, President Barack Obama, Chancellor Angela Merkel--pick your the imperialist lackey!--arrested an opposition leader who had organized peaceful street protests? Or if the CIA shut off the internet in politically restive cities like Berkeley and Brooklyn; blocked Twitter traffic it found politically suspect; and took over PBS, forcing it to broadcast only pro-administration agitprop, never allowing the opposition party to traduce the government across public airwaves?...

Perhaps reactions would be muted if motorcycle gangs loyal to President George W. Bush circled anti-Iraq War protests physically attacking--and occasionally murdering--demonstrators. How about if a judge ruled against President ObamaÂ’s domestic spying apparatus and, in return, the White House ordered that judge thrown in prison?

Moynihan has more, obviously.

The chilling thing that separates, in my mind, the leftist from the liberal is the former's "By any means necessary" ethic. They are willing to defend -- and perpetrate themselves -- true evil because, they assert, their mission is so intrinsically good that its accomplishment will redeem all sins (including the sin of murder).

It's a scary mentality. Anyone who has convinced himself that a little bit of murder in the service of preferred politics is excusable should proudly accept membership in the club which he has joined. And that club includes Stalin, Mao, Osama bin Ladin, and, yes, Hitler.

As I have said, many times, I am all in for anyone vs Dems.

I honestly think once people get to DC there is something in the water...along with special interests and threats.

Heard Hannity and Beck talking today (briefly, in car) that their favorites, right now, are Rand Paul and Ted Cruz.

I also like Walker, Jindal, or anyone but a stinky Dem (ok, no McCain, not that I would have to include him. He needs to retire, like ten years ago).

39 If anyone ever had any doubt as to the true nature of the Democrat party since George McGovern was their candidate in 1972, then they're living in denial. Look at the IRS, FCC, destruction of our national defense and foreign policy, total disregard for the rule of law. Then look at the media and academia (Sandra Korn, anyone?). They will stop at nothing. As they are exposed, as their policies fail and crumble around and on top of us, they will lash out. I am predicting something violent and repressive will happen by 2016 if not post 2014.

I love that Rubio is calling out the commies in no uncertain terms for their evil, but I'm not sure that our five decade embargo is the right tool for changing Cuba. (Rubio rant: "We have sanctions against North Korea, why?"; cuz they're bad actors, etc.).

When the East German commies broke out of their prison country it was half for Freedom and democracy, and half for Coca-cola and cars that run. They could see over the Wall that life was simply better on the other side.

The answer, were Republicans interested in addressing the issue of illegal amnesty in a constructive way, would be a $1M penalty for each instance of someone knowingly employing an illegal.

And then demagogue the hell out of any Dem that opposed on the grounds that they would rather employee an illegal then pay a market wage to an American.

And, his ad boasted about proposed, "tough" requirements for "citizenship" though omitting mention of what amounts to Green Card amnesty, etc etc). Not to mention that if millions being "in the shadows" is good enough to grant amnesty to everyone now, how will we respond to "millions of second class citizens cut off from the right to vote..." etc Only a complete fool thinks that if we let millions live here permanently without requirements, just for the asking, that they won't eventually be granted the full complements of citizenship. No "hard on" for immigration? Try winning a general election, ever, with 50 million new, voting citizens from the 3d world, i.e. the US 10 years from now on its present trajectory.

It's one long screed.

No. 1 Son came home from high school once several years back with a screed his history teacher had given him. It didn't note authorship. It was all about how we didn't have to nuke Japan, they were ready to surrender, we just nuked them to show the Russians our giant war dick.

I told him his teacher was a commie and that he had to have gotten his ideas from either Zinn or Chomsky, so we googled it and it turned out to be Zinn word for word.

It's one of my proudest parenting moments.

Doesn't matter if you are passionate about the immigration thing or not. If it was simply a matter of his one vote, that would be bad, but survivable. But he went out and co-wrote/co-sponsored the legislation with Schumer, legislation that the Donks are 100% in favor of.

Posted by: Frumious Bandersnatch at February 25, 2014 04:55 PM (A0sHn) ------------------------------------ Eh. There are quite a few politically unfree countries who have had as much (or much more) economic freedom as China. Franco's Spain and Pinochet's Chile come immediately to mind. But as to Cuba, why do you think that lifting the embargo will magically result in more economic freedom?!? Trade with dozens of other rich, Western countries hasn't done a damn thing to loosen the screws. Cuba, under its current system, has very little to sell and thus little hard currency to buy Western goods. What they DO get is used at tourist hotels and by the elite. Period. Until they lighten up on economic tyranny, the way the Chinese did, foreign trade won't help the people at all. Indeed, their situation seems to get worse and worse, especially outside of Havana.

254 239 I wonder how many of those 3 million new voters voted for Clinton, in '92? Posted by: wheatie at February 25, 2014 05:20 PM (DEUoo) Virtually all of them. Probably multiple times. Every election for the past 40 years has seen the percentage of Latino voters voting GOP shrink and shrink and shrink. There is never and will never be any surge of so-called "natural born conservatives" because these people aren't. They come from and are lured by big government lucre. Rubio and his parents' generation are dying out and even young Cuban Americans are becoming more and more liberal over time. But Karl Rove is the architect.

"Rubio has been smart enough from the start to understand the immigration question.
He knows we're not going to deport 12 million people.
He knows the real argument is whether those who are here get permanent resident status or citizenship.
He wants permanent residency.
Democrats want citizenship.
Our side calls them both "amnesty" and wants to tar and feather him.
We need to get real."

This. We need a quicky path to permanent residency for people (the non criminal kind) coming across the border, and then we need to stop feeling bad about tossing out any and all criminals who come. We need to make these people legal, whether we make them citizens or not. The system we have isn't working, and straight amnesty didn't work. We need to try something else.

I'm not saying I'm 100% sold on Rubio, I think he needs seasoning, but that speech was fantastic and I am still pissed that people went apeshit about Perry when he started talking about Mexican kids in college.

Rubio has tried to be on both sides of this at once. Then his fence-straddling feet slipped and he landed squarely on his crotch.

He gave an English-language network TV interview in which he said, "Of COURSE we're not proposing that people get voting citizenship and government benefits right away."

And then went on Spanish-language Univision and said, "Of COURSE you are going to get voting citizenship and government benefits right away!"

Once the 'compassion' argument is taken off the table it simply is not possible to make a rational argument that our best interests are served by absorbing these folk. Hmm. Okay, I see the flaw in my statement..., it is that 'rational argument' part where it falls apart for the Left. The issue is not about rationality, it is about political philosophy.

347 Rubio having committed a transgression on illegal immigration though, they're just empty words from an Establishment traitor.

Sorry, nope. Committing a transgression is speeding. F******g a goat on the capital steps is more serious, and Rubio did the whole herd.

There are many things I forgive. Lying to my face, repeatedly, isn't one of them.

349 Had Ted Cruz delivered this exact same speech, we'd be hearing nothing but how awesome it was and that he's again fighting back and standing for principle because after all he's "Mr. Principle". Rubio having committed a transgression on illegal immigration though, they're just empty words from an Establishment traitor. Posted by: Hollowpoint at February 25, 2014 05:35 PM (SY2Kh) Rubio lost is cred. Cruz is building cred. by bucking and fighting the leadership. it's that simple. and to repeat, support Cruz because he does and says what I think needs to be done and said, if he were stop doing that tomorrow, I would abandon him without hesitation. I don't care who does the right thing, I will support whoever is doing it. what's the right thing? shrink the government, it's power, it's scope, it's spending and do it now.

350 335 Unlike most of you, I'm personally opposed to general legal immigration. We've invited in enough people of the world for the time being. A couple or three decades of assimilation is in order. If there are some out there with assets or skills we need, a special procedure could be set up. Posted by: toby928© at February 25, 2014 05:38 PM (QupBk) This is actually my position too. Nothing inherently wrong with it. Course, we run the risk of being screeched at as "nativists" or some other such shit.

351 341 If you even get on the same podium as Chucky Schumer, you are off my list! That ... right there ... is the one and only reservation I have about Marco Rubio.' But it's a really big fucking reservation. What part of actually compromising with Schumer, McCain, and Graham actually appealed to Rubio ? Did they make him feel like he was part of the Big Boy Group ? Screw that. It exposes a critical character flaw.

Yeah...Rubio delivered a passionate speech in the above video.

But how about some passionate speeches for US workers who are out of work?

I kept waiting for him to say..."And this is why we need to grant citizenship to these oppressed people fleeing from these dictators."

To those who say we "can't deport 12 million people"...

Why not?

Do it...for the middle class.

Do it...because they broke the law.

Do it...because we can't afford 12 million more people on entitlements.

If Rubio wants to win me back, he can start by showing some compassion for the citizens who are already here, paying taxes and abiding by the law.

What about them?

Exception: if someone gets up there with Chucky and says, "Oh look, a TV camera," and then as Schumer instantly reflexively turns to get in front of it, crudely shoulder-checks the greasy little shit right off the stage.

Oops! Sorry! My bad! Better put some ice on that!

It's going to be necessary to have a hundred thousand a year or so high level STEM professionals with graduate degrees.

America can't get enough natives through to that level thanks to the damage which public sector unions and leftist pedagogy have inflicted on the public schools. Fixing that is going to take 20 years of rebuilding from kindergarten on up.

Other than that skills gap, I too see no economic reason why America requires mass immigration of low-skilled or unskilled workers at this time.

369 We are not The World, nor are we the children. We're a sovereign nation that should be looking out for it's own citizens. It's fine when we help other countries, as long as it's in our own interest, but the interest of others, per se, have zero weight with me. God made us to love by proximity, in declining concentric circles. I'm willing to let Hawaiians into my circle of citizenly love, but that's where I draw the line.

373 Sometimes I wish the Obama administration would try to take away our guns. It would fully justify the complete removal of his government by force.

Posted by: gastorgrab at February 25, 2014 04:39 PM (FX38i)

All it takes, I believe, is the death or retirement of one Supreme Court Justice to effectively nullify the 2nd Amendment via deliberate redefinition of its meaning. Or Obama could order the EPA to declare one or more of the components of rifle and handgun cartridges--lead and brass and copper-- as dangerous pollutants and go after ammunition manufacturers and distributors, bury them with inspections and fines and IRS audits a la Catherine Englebrecht. Restricting the ammo supply one way or another would be construed by the general public as far less provocative than knocking down doors and confiscating privately owned firearms.

Anyway, that's what I would do if I was a tyrannical asshole intent on disarming those I perceive as my real enemies.

Yes, it was a great speech. Whether this and subsequent actions mark a comeback in conservative circles and puts Rubio back into presidential contention remains to be seen, but I personally doubt it.

Allowing himself to be the conservative face of the Gang of 8 immigration reform legislation was a huge miscalculation on Rubio's part, but he went ahead anyway, eager to lose his 'Tea Party extremist' image and make himself a more attractive candidate to the moderate-leaning, big money donors who bankroll the GOP Establishment. Even worse, Rubio allowed himself to be played by Chuck Schumer, of all people. None of this says much for Rubio's political judgement.

380 I've lost count of how many students research and present with starry eyes; the most unbelievably whitewashed versions of the lives of Mao, Castro, Che and Chevez. They reach such distorted results from consulting mainstream articles from our Marxist media and left-wing academic publications found everywhere. Finding online and published library sources, not propagandizing the glories of modern communist governments, is harder than you think. When I bring up Mao's or Che's estimated dead body count and political reigns of terror; many of them react with indifference or worse. I've encountered students annually that attempt to defend political purges as necessary. Their facial expressions are extremely disturbing. It's their nonchalant acceptance of past mass murders for achieving a political goal. In most cases their families are extreme left-wing. You wonder what sort of conversations go on over dinner. And then there are the annual Holocaust deniers or in some cases, the celebraters; including faculty(and one principal). The first time I ran into those deranged minds - no amount of evidence or rational discussion will move their mindset- I went home and sat staring at the sky for hours. It was my first encounter with serious political insanity.

382 No single individual is going to turn around this country.

So if Rubio steps up to the plate, and hits a grand-slam shaming useful idiots/or gutless wonders such as Tom Harkin, we should be cheering, not undercutting him for his ill-conceived stance on immigration.

His speech here obviously resonates, because he is speaking with personal understanding of what is happening on the ground in Latin America.

My take on the purity test is simple. I'm tired of investing my
hopes and aspirations into a single individual. That's the "Messiah complex" we have in full force with the current POTUS, and its an attitude that contributes to the over centralized power that exists in Washington D.C.

We need a chorus of talented people of the likes of Rubio, Cruz, Christie, Paul, Paul, Walker, and Palin all hammering academia, the MSM, and Hollywood from all sides on how brain damaged and destructive Democratic driven policies have been.

Good speech, Marco.

Rubio wants legal imigration; unfortunately, he is naive beyond belief. Democrats are willing to use him to get their open door policy, but they are never going to enforce any immigration laws; now or ever. If he ever grows up maybe his political career will take off.

384 Rubio just hit a grand slam. It is SHAMEFUL that we don't have 500 other "American" congresspersons saying the same thing he did. Btw, he reiterated his position in a special broadcast of CNN Espanol last night and called Maduro out for the thug that he is. It made me cry, literally, to see and hear his clarion voice of liberty amidst the defeanening silence of the rest of the world. God bless him!! Maduro is committing genocide here, and Rubio is standing up to him squarely. God bless him!! SOSVenezuela!!
