Saturday Car Thread 02/15/14 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse & Countrysquire]
— Open Blogger

Happy day after Valentine's Day my pretties. We *heart* you all. (Well, most of you anyway.) Thanks for your contributions to keeping the posts current and the threads lively.

Today we bring to you a bit of tragedy, a reminder of the uniqueness of car design from years gone by, the start to a controversial race season, and a whole lotta How you doin'?.

First, and most importantly, comes news of the UAW defeat at VW's Chattanooga plant.

Volkswagen workers rejected the union by a vote of 712 to 626. The defeat raises questions about the future of a union that for years has suffered from declining membership and influence, and almost certainly leaves its president, Bob King, who had vowed to organize at least one foreign auto maker by the time he retires in June, with a tarnished legacy.

"If the union can't win [in Chattanooga], it can't win anywhere," said Steve Silvia, a economics and trade professor at American University who has studied labor unions.

Read the full story at the WSJ and revel in the sweet tears and the merriment at Twitter.

In very sad news, several Morons and Moronettes brought this article to my attention. It seems that a tragedy has befallen the automotive world.

The National Corvette Museum in Kentucky suffered a sinkhole which swallowed eight of their beautiful specimens. The video, at the link, shows the moment of collapse and it will make you cringe for what disappears down that hole. The good news, however; is that General Motors is stepping up to help restore the cars that were damaged. As the fella from GM says, thereÂ’s only one 1,000,000th Corvette to roll off the assembly line.

Countrysquire: I like old cars. Hell, I loveÂ’em. Sure, a new Camry will start every time you turn the key, not leak oil or boil over, and has a functioning air conditioning system. Still, todayÂ’s autos have been massaged in wind tunnels to the point that cars in there respective classes all look pretty much the same. Look at the greenhouse of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Avalon, and the just introduced Chrysler 200 and Hyundai Genesis. Same freaking car, and few have any character of their own. Before the big war, car manufacturers were doing their own thing and had stylists whose job it was to make each yearÂ’s new model stand out from the competition. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the cars of 1939.

NASCAR kicks off the Sprint Car Series in Daytona at 8 pm tonight. As you may have heard, there have been changes to The Chase for the championship. The Bleacher Report pronounces NASCAR Moves Into The 21st Century. And, what would a NASCAR season be without someone, this time The King himself, harshing on Danica Patrick?

Moron ScottST sends along this article which seeks to answer the age-old question Does this car make my ass look fat?

It seems that the love for manly men hasnÂ’t quite died out entirely. The folks at Insurance.com conducted a survey of 2,000 people; 1k men and 1k women, to inquire as to which cars make the opposite sex more attractive. Also asked as part of the survey were questions pertaining to the upkeep of the vehicles and, not surprisingly, both men and women prefer a clean car, free of cigarette butts, and without dents. The results of the full survey can be found here but the highlights are shown below:

32% of women in the study responded that thereÂ’s just something women like about a pickup man. And, given that their top choice in vehicle color is black, This might be the vehicle you studly single Morons should consider the next time youÂ’re out shopping.

A black Ford pickup truck. Ford was the brand most chosen by women at 16%.

See? TobyÂ’s no fool. Without that truck heÂ’d be just like any other guy in Nashville, trying to get a record deal and hitting on the kinda-cute receptionist in the hopes of scoring an interview with a producer.

Next on the list that strikes a womanÂ’s fancy is the sports car, at 27%, with Porsche being the brand mentioned most often. Given that, itÂ’s no surprise that red was one of the top three colors mentioned by women. So, if youÂ’re in the market for a fast woman, women who prefer speed, this might be your go-to car.

Porsche also made an appearance in the top three cars that men find attractive, with 10% of men mentioning the brand.

At number three on the list of cars that women find attractive is the sport-utility vehicle, or ‘SUV’ for short. 16% of women surveyed had a hankering for a man who can haul both a load of lumber and the kids to soccer practice. Stability: That’s what an SUV looks like. My choice, here, in blue, has absolutely nothing to do with the survey itself, but if I stuck strictly to the survey there would nothing but red, black, and silver in this post and, frankly, that’s boring.

Rounding out the list of vehicles that women find attractive are: sedans (11%), hybrid or electric (9%), minivans (2%), and, get this… 1% of women responding said ‘mail truck’. Yes. The mail truck got 10 votes. Given that statistic, it’s no surprise that 40 women, or 4%, chose THIS as the sexiest vehicle a man can drive:

I searched for ‘hot UPS guys’ and ‘hot UPS drivers’ and this was the best I could do. I think that whole ‘hot UPS guy’ thing might be an urban legend. I mean… no matter how sexy that big, boxy, brown truck is, the dude is wearing brown socks, with shorts. C’mon!

Now, to the vehicles that make the men go Grrrrrr.

Heading up the pack, by a wide margin, is this little baby.

39% of men survey responded that they find women in sports cars most attractive. BMW was the car most often mentioned, at 16%, and red was the dominant color of choice at 40%. I think I have an idea why this is. Have you ever seen an old, fat, pale woman driving a red BMW convertible? No? There’s a reason for that. We do not want to draw attention to ourselves. The woman who drives this car is just screaming, “Look at me!” and, who can blame her. She’s probably 5’2”, blonde, and weighs 100 lbs soaking wet. She NEEDS a big strong man to protect her.

And, in case you have any doubt as to the authenticity of the male attraction to women in sports cars, fortunately, there is documentary evidence upon which to rely.

Coming in at number two on the list of cars that men find attractive, at 22%, is the trusty sedan. But, not just any old Taurus will do. The car with the second-most number of votes is the Mercedes, at 14%.

Classy, isnÂ’t it?

The third choice of male respondents was the SUV. Now see, I drive an SUV, so I am going to take some liberty here and suggest that, perhaps, this is exactly what they had in mind:

Of course it is! ItÂ’s red. ItÂ’s sporty. ItÂ’s a Jeep, so itÂ’s a little rugged. And, itÂ’s an SUV. What more could you want?

Rounding out the list of vehicles that make a woman look goood are: trucks (10%), hybrid or electric (6%), and minivans (4%)

Now, armed with this knowledge, go forth and shop accordingly.

Moron Johnny I sprung something completely new on me this week. I had never heard of the Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee series but it is, indeed, a thing. So, this weekÂ’s video is courtesy of CICGC and, with Seinfeld in the news as of late, IanÂ’s recommended video comes at the perfect time. I couldnÂ’t find an embeddable link, so go HERE to see it in its entirety. Meanwhile, the season 2 trailer for the series is below:

Each week I scour the net looking for suitable photos for the Moronettes and, perhaps, you wonÂ’t be too shocked to learn that there just arenÂ’t nearly as many photos of hot men out there as there are of hot women. Most of what I find is either cheesecake or clearly not intended for a female audience (ahem). But bear with me ladies, IÂ’ll give it my best.

And, since you Morons had to suffer the UPS photo above, I think itÂ’s only fairÂ…

12 It is indeed big fun  to read the lefty excuses for the UAW VW defeat.  Of course, there's the too-vague-to-refute "outside influences" excuse and the who-needs-free-speech "Republicans intimidate workers" pablum.  But my favorite is the "UAW is a damaged brand" excuse which implies that there are different products out there and some brands of mouth breathing labor collusion thuggery sell better than others.

13 Oh!  I see what you did there.  Tell us all cars today look the same, then show us a picture of all  the cars from 1939, and they all look the same!!

Clever.  Very clever.

As for the sinkhole, I hate news websites.  Just show me the damn video of the damn cars falling in  the damn hole.  I don't want to see your damn  ad, and I don't need to hear your damn reporters talking about the damn cars falling  in the damn hole.

Won't be doing that with the newer transportation modules.

The margin was actually pretty high.  But I am not counting my chickens here.  The union will file a greivance with the corrupt union goon NLRB (thank you GOP leadership for that cave).

The NLRB will either direct a second chance vote or will "deem" it to have passed.  Hell, why follow the law when you work for the choom king.

Yea, we are seeing this from different glass full/empty perspectives. I see it as "that many?" And it is disturbing to me that a right to work state would have almost half of employees voting for a union. I think in the long run that factory is doomed.

22 My one-ton has a dump box. When I pull up to the bar, pickup truck drivers in their four-door four-by-four four-footers scooch over and tip their Cat-hats. Reckon it's the duallies and mudflaps -- or the fact that I could engage PTO and dump whatever's in that box all over their cattle-horn chrome semi horns, and there's sideboards so you can't see what's in the box.

In a one-ton dump, you can wear a hard hat with a white shirt.

I was pissed at Bob Corker, not about his strong anti-union stance, but about him running his mouth that the execs at VW didn't know what the hell they were talking about. Now, however, I'd like to think that he was smart enough to deliver a message that the execs could not. The fact that he has thoroughly pissed off the UAW is a bonus.

She is the primary driver so it IS her car.  She fell in love with the Camry after driving a friend's one time.

Fine by me, I think it is a superb car and would recommend it to all who ask about them.

Current vehicle: Silver '06 Silverado extended cab.

Next vehicle: probably a Ford F-150 (cuz FU,GM) or Nissan Titan w/diesel.  This will be a leap for me, as I've never owned anything but GM products (done with that) with the exception of a Ford POS Taurus.

Dream vehicle: '72 Ferrari Daytona Spyder, in yellow.  Or a Unimog.  I'll take either.

Whenever I saw a crime show where ordinary witnesses identified a car as to make, model, approximate year, I would marvel. God help me if I ever had to be a witness. "Uh, it was red." Then I had a son. I kind of learned along with him. When he was 5 or so he loved to go to huge parking lots where he could walk around e-n-d-l-e-s-s-l-y identifying cars by logos, shapes, etc. So I'm a little better now.

The reason that the UAW picked Chattanooga as its target is because the city is known to lean left; they wouldn't have a prayer in say, West Point, GA.  Also, the two clowns have pissed Tennesseans off, expect Alexander to face a tough primary.  And Tennesseans absolutely hate Gore now.  He got elected there because of his father's legacy and Tipper's Parental Advisory schtick, but between his dopey Gaia hypocrisy and his dopehead kids, the family is reviled in Tennessee now.

Load capacity is a primary factor, as I end up with a lot of firewood in the back.  I also have a trailer in the plans, and already being familiar with the towing characteristics and wiring schemes of both the Ford and the Nissan they fall into my comfort zone.

I would still recommend  Toyota over any of the domestic names, but compared to the other Japanese  makes, it came in fourth in my experience.

Granted, I'm only one person, and I'm biased because  the Mazda saved my life, but compared to the Nissan for example,  the Toyota needed more little things, and seemed more... delicate?  If that makes any sense.

65 FWIW, I have been very happy with my VW Eos, which turns six next month. It's a fun car to drive, although I would not call it a sports car per se. Handle great, good pick up, problem-free. Gets about 27 mpg combined (probalby 70/30 city/hwy driving usage). Still get compliments on it from time to time. And the top mechanism is terrific. It has a large power sunroof and then the hard top convertible roof. Very tight car even with the convertible, especially compared to the Pontiac G6 (or whatever the hardtop is), which I've driven a few times and found annoyingly noisy.

66 That '39 Hupmobile is a Skylark. After Cord went belly up the body dies for the advanced Cord 812 were purchased by Graham and Hupp for a conventional drive automobile. Not many came off the line, and they were titled as 40's and a few left over 41's.

70 I'd like to have a pickup, but not a black one. It's the Porsche that should be black. Historically, black was THE most popular Porsche color, although I'm not sure it still is. We went to the Nethercutt Museum last week, where I was able to indulge my love of both old cars and old musical machinery, from an Edison Laboratory Model Disc Player (which I have) to the world's third-largest theater organ (which I don't have--yet). One of the really great things about the Nethercutt is that, by charter, everything in it must work. Every one of their cars is kept in working condition and registered for street driving.

107 @88 I can still remember the name of the commie propaganda rag that I first read that argument in. The Party pushed "planned obsolescence" theory pretty hard.

It is certainly not true of 1930's cars. The makers simply could not afford it. Twenty years later, styling was a big deal, but look at the rest of late 1950's US culture. Styling was a big deal.

The 1939 poster shows all "semi-detached" fenders, a trend that had started about eight years earlier. It was taken as a required item, much like the three boxes of sedan design were much later. Studebaker's breakthrough independent front suspension was about to change everything, as it allowed front end integration. Then everybody got real busy, and it took a decade to catch on.

Packard was pretty much upwind of Rolls-Royce in the clamshell-fender era, still considered extremely handsome among the pontoons, then fell flat on its face postwar. They could not make a small car, and their tub-with-a-mustache sedans about killed them with anybody but their old-money portfolio. Right at the end, Dick Teague delivered them a couple of dreamy mid-50's cruisers (torsion-bar suspension too), but, too late.

They bought Studebaker to go down-market, just as production engineering gave the Big Three the tool to kill the Little Four. Abandoned an engine plant that had just been re-tooled. They did make a significant small car though, ironically a cleverly-cobbled big car, the thing that Packard could not do.

They tend to be bad drivers and worse parkers. I love convertibles, but a lot of the dudes driving them are clearly going through midlife crises. Pass. That said, I always check out the comeback Thunderbird convertibles (I like the minty green/aqua one the best), the Volvo convertible (which are rare), and the Lexus convertible IS whatever it is. Convertibles should have light tan interiors, never black. I prefer blue exterior, but gold is ok. I will say my blue VW Eos (w/ tan interior) generally attracts the ladies (if I wanted to switch teams, I'd be all set). 138 Car thread is hard for me, as Sat afternoons are pretty busy. I'm working on old cars! But that UPS driver photo is "save as wallpaper" material. I feel like I have to show it to my actual UPS driver. Best place to shop is Cars.com, with a Craigslist back. Late model cars: If you have more money, Audi A3 diesel. If you have less money, VW Jetta or Golf diesel. If you are buying an older car, small dealers get the cars that big dealers take on trade, but can't sell on their lots for appearance reasons. Mid 90s 3 series BMWs can be found with low miles, in babied condition and they are great cars, I just bought one for my godson and it rules. If you need a van, the Toyota Siena minivan is the newer choice, and the Ford Aerostar is the older choice (I have four). And for larger car, but not minivan, the luxury cars all depreciate like stones. My favorite is the BMW 7 series, but consider Mercedes S or Lexus LS, always choose 1-2 body styles ago for maximum buy opportunity.
