Saturday Car Thread 02/22/14 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse & Countrysquire]
— Open Blogger

Happy Saturday y'all.

Today we bring to you updated news of the situation in Chattanooga, some of the best in automotive advertising, one hell of a yard sale, what might be the most asinine tech "advancement" ever, and Countrysquire introduces a new weekly series: The Beauty of the Week.

As expected, the UAW has called on the NLRB to cast aside the vote at VW and order a new vote be held. In the process, they have succeeded in doing something I would never have thought possible: Making me cheer for Senator Bob Corker.

The UAW complaint alleged that comments by top Tennessee Republicans went beyond simple criticism and amounted to "extraordinary interference" in the election. The elected officials had warned that, if unionized, the factory would run the risk of losing legislative support for state financial incentives.

The union also claimed that comments by Corker were "intended to coerce employees to vote against UAW." Corker had issued a press release last week claiming that, based on private conversations he had had with VW officials, the company would expand the plant to include a new SUV line if workers did not unionize.

That ran contrary to prior indications from VW officials, who denied having had such conversations with Corker. The senator stood by his comments.

Corker said the UAW complaint showed that the union was interested only "in its own survival" and nothing else: "The workers at Chattanooga's Volkswagen plant spoke very clearly last week, so we are disappointed the UAW is ignoring their decision and has filed this objection."

Keep in mind that they failed to win the vote despite the heavy hand of the German union and the implicit support of the management at VW.

Irony. Look it up.

In its filing, the UAW stated that the Republicans "conducted what appears to have been a coordinated and widely-publicized coercive campaign, in concert with their staffs and others, to deprive (Volkswagen) workers of their federally-protected right, through the Election, to support and select the UAW as their exclusive representative."

"We're committed to standing with the Volkswagen workers to ensure that their right to have a fair vote without coercion and interference is protected," said UAW President Bob King.

Of course, the UAW took to twitter to retweet the rantings of their supporters.

I suppose "the working man" doesn't include the 700+ employees who voted against unionization.

If they, the UAW and the NLRB, succeed in overturning this vote you can guarandamntee that this will be just the start of union rape and pillaging.

Countrysquire: More than 15 million new cars were sold in the U.S. in 2013. I’m sure a Bing search would show us how much money was spent on advertising, but I’m too lazy to look it up. Plus, this is being written at the last minute because I was on the road all day yesterday to buy an old car, so I don’t want to incur any more of NDH’s wrath than possible. [Ed. note: Wrath? *bats eyelashes*] Anyway, ads that do nothing more than tell us why the competition sucks are not very interesting. For the last 50 years, no car manufacturer has done a better job pitching their cars than Volkswagen. No one. The little kid as Darth Vader from a couple years ago was just perfect, and the new one with the engineers getting their wings was pretty good as well. The ‘wing envy’ at the urinals was good stuff. Those in the advertising world say their ad agency’s work from the 1960s is still the gold standard.

Would you like to own 80 acres in the peaceful countryside of Wendell, Idaho? You're a car lover? Great! Along with the land, comes some 8,000 cars.

Location: Wendell, Idaho 83355
Trans: Auto
Description: 80 Acre Auto Salvage in Idaho

The largest in the North West with an inventory of over 8,000 cars. The owner is ready to retire. Built from the ground up this yard is one of if not THE oldest, largest continually operated yard. It is a piece of American history. Mostly domestic vehicles with a sprinkle of others. Located in Wendell Idaho there is plenty of room for expansion. Give us a call we would love to tell you more. Or better yet come view it for yourself. 2 miles north of Wendell it is located on a main highway and only 3 miles off of the freeway. We sell cars and parts all over the world. Probably only 75 percent of this yard is actually inventoried since it was started in the 60's. This place needs an energetic car lover that could update the inventory and incorporate a website to capitalize on global sells. Someone who wants to save history not crush it!

Price: $3,000,000

Your Volvo Car Could Be Your Mailbox Oh, sheesh.

"Via a smartphone or a tablet, the owner will be informed when a delivery company wants to drop off or pick up something from the car," they added.

The owner of the car then accepts the delivery and can track when the car is opened. The technology would provide a solution for people who are on the move and need to receive deliveries away from their home or office.

The company said failed deliveries cost courier companies around one billion euros (US $1.37 billion) in re-delivery costs each year.

"The technology was trialled during a pilot program of 100 people, 86 percent of which agreed that 'roam delivery' saved them time," Volvo said. "The future car will be much more than just a means of transportation."

Beauty of the Week:

IÂ’m still not thrilled with how many pieces of automotive art that had to be culled for our 10 Most Beautiful Cars piece a couple weeks back, so I figured that we should feature a gorgeous car each week.

Let’s start with one we all know and love, the ’63 Corvette with the split rear window. Turns out that Corvette buyers were interested in seeing out the back of the car, so Bill Mitchell’s iconic divided rear glass was gone in 1964. I would argue that the entire 1963-67 “C2” generation run was the acme of Corvette design, and the styling of the coupe worked even better than the roadster.

6 As someone with almost 30 years in the advertising business, I can tell you that the VW 'Lemon' ad probably had more impact on advertising creative than any other piece of communication in the twentieth century.

Yes, VW ads are great, but the Sixties were arguably their heyday. The ad agency behind the campaigns was Doyle Dane Bernbach. Unfortunately, DDB also produced the infamous "Countdown" spot against Goldwater in 1964.

21 I said on twitter, and I'll say it here. I can't believe that Boeing can't open a plant in SC to benefit from their hatred of unions, but the VW "shared ownership" board gets to basically do the exact opposite and someone can't file a complaint. It's insanity. Frankly I highly doubt Corker's statements affected the vote that much some people probably assumed he was lying anyway.

43 Gasoline Water Condensation:   If you aren't using Sta-Bil Fuel Stabilizer (Marine formal even better), you should be, especially in the winter.  Your car might run on the 10% ethanol crap, but without treating for the water, the ethanol basically becomes useless as a fuel.  So instead of a 1-2% hit in mpg, you'll get a 10% hit in mpg.  Plus it protects the entire fuel system from corrosion and seal damage.

82 Mine needed a new transmission because it would pop out of 4th gear. I wasn't strong enough to hold it in gear. So...gears one through three got me to school and back. And sometimes it would pull to the left when you hit the brakes. Oh, and it would die constantly in the morning before it was warmed up. Since there were steep hills all around, I was really good at that one-foot-on-gas, one-foot-on-clutch trick.

83 There is no doubt the union will get another bite at the apple, NLRB is for all intents and purposes a union protection force that can do whatever it wants with nobody to stop them The uaw no doubt has the names of those that voted against unionization. The next vote will be much different than the first.

84 Forty years ago, the Bug was lovable to A Certain Sort because a regular person could replace the synchronizer ring when it wore out, or adjust the brakes. A friend of mine used to rebuild an engine on the kitchen table every winter. Crumple a fender? IIRC it was eight bolts to install a new one. Then, around that time, doing stuff like that stopped being a cool way to spend your spare time. We changed.

Do you think the big three here would stick with the unions if they magically had the chance to dump them and run? 20% of VW is owned by the Saxony government, a state in Germany. That government is run by socialist and they have TWO board seats. That explain it?

101 Now that I am happily married and off the market, I can let you morons (and -ettes) in on a little secret.  I have a late model Ghia in mint condition.  I drive it around town in the summer, and... It Is A Chick Magnet!!  I get a smile from nearly every lady that I see, be they 18 to 81!  My wife does not let me drive it if I take our Aussie Sheepdog along, because between the Ghia and the cute dog, well - best keep your wimminz indoors if you see me coming!

Moronettes, as for being a guy magnet, I'll just mention that I originally struck up a conversation with my wife over the car she was getting into.  You'll never guess what it was!  To keep her from driving away, I just grabbed the bumper and lifted the rear wheels off the ground!

That last sentence may be like Obama's golf scorecard, slightly exaggerated.

158 Yeah. I tire quickly of blaming All My Problems on the punks in the UAW plants. Are they jerks, you betcha. But when you sum up our issues with the US auto industry, most of our complaints are with American management, not American labor. There used to be a bitter joke at the four-lettered of the Big 3, that its vice-presidents were in the business of not making cars.

100% of Alfa Romeos were final-assembled by true communists, and Henry Ford said "When I see an Alfa Romeo, I take off my hat." BMW's were built by the same guys, except with a migrant-labor permit. French and English auto assembly laborers? Puh-leeze. In both aptitude and attitude, the worst of our run-of-the-millrats put them to shame. And yet, their products have some fans.

Everybody finds it easy to blame the Chevette, for instance, on Lordstown. Probably, that car's assembly quality was no better than any other shitbox. But its legendary shortcomings were designed in, and well known by certain managers before it went to market. There have been big books written on why GM was like that. UAW members built those breathtaking C2 Corvettes, too.

Not that they aren't less than they should be, but we have bigger problems than just the quality of UAW labor. And we hate, hate our own business institutions.

It's not the quality of the labor that is an issue, it's the cost. A fender-bolter-onner isn't worth 35 bucks an hour...which is why the UAW has lost so many jobs to Robbie the Robot.

163 Mikey, let's argue all night over whether Hot Rod Lincoln is even "rock." It's pretty clearly Country. And Western.

GGE, respectfully disagree on the nature of the complaint, and for evidence, merely look back at the shouting and screaming evident in these very pages over the last few days/and/or/decade. There is a deep-seated hatred there.

It crosses the line of rock and country - 'rockabilly' - I think.  Truly classic and it can peg in both genres because there are youngsters (not me - I peg 48 next week) who still slam the right foot down on the family car on a weekend night.*

*Back in high school I had a friend who had a '73 Caprice that was about as rusted out as you could expect in Michigan in the early 1980's.  He got it from his grandparents and they towed a large Airstream.  So it had a 45something unbelievably huge under the hood.  When he floored it at a light TransAms and others would watch that old boat just sprint like - an Impala; like an actual impala would sprint when the cheetah is following.

165 I always thought of it as rockabilly.

166 It should be noted somewhere that soon-to-be-retired UAW President Bob King is a professed Marxist socialist. Whether King's publicly stated ideological leanings are relevant to the Chattanooga vote or the decline of the UAW and unions in general is a matter of conjecture, but I think it matters. One thing I've learned about large organizations and institutions of any sort is that the character and beliefs of the man or woman at the top ripple downward and outward. If, for example, the one in charge is an asshole, assholery becomes pervasive in the company culture. You see where I'm going with this.
