Saturday Car Thread 03/01/14 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse & Countrysquire]
— Open Blogger

Welcome to the Go Fast edition of the car thread.

Today we bring you some race action, a lesson well-learned, the world's fastest production car, Countrysquire writes about the new standard for hypercars, along with all the usual features you've come to expect from your Saturday car chat.

What would a car thread be without mention of the greatest event in motor sports? Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the winner of last week's Daytona 500. It was an exciting race and a fantastic win for Dale Jr, his second win at Daytona. We'll get into more detail about the race during the NASCAR thread tomorrow but, for now, here's Junior taking the checkered flag.

Congrats to Dale Earnhardt Jr. on his big win.

Speaking of NASCAR drivers, what happens when a car blogger is openly skeptical about the authenticity of a Jeff Gordon ad? This is what happens:

BTW, the blogger is standing by his original story.
Moronette Y-not was kind enough to provide a lead on this Go Fast story: An American manufacturer has broken the record for World's Fastest "Production" Car. Kind of.

John Hennessey is a Texas boutique builder who believes that if more is better, too much is almost enough. The superlative Venom GT is a 1,244-horsepower monster fashioned by stretching a Lotus Exige, then stuffing it with a 7.0-liter Corvette ZR-1 engine with a pair of turbochargers. For those looking to own this kind of insanity, a Venom GT starts at $1.2 million.

That price is a bargain compared to Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, the other supercar in the ongoing race for the top speed record. Hennessey and Bugatti have been competing for years, with bragging rights going back and forth between their headquarters in Houston and Alsace, France. This latest round occurred on ValentineÂ’s Day, when HennesseyÂ’s crew and the independent speed recorders from Racelogic descended on the 3.2-mile landing strip at Cape Canaveral. By the end of the day, Smith had made a GPS-verified run of 270.49 mph (435.31 km/hr).

The video is a bit over-the-top, but it's quite something.

The 1990s. Yeah, what a decade. From a blurry telescope to flavored cigars, it sucked in so many ways. But it wasnÂ’t all bad. Nirvana reminded us that rock music is about more than flashy videos and this internet thing got a little momentum working. Also, McLaren introduced the greatest sports car the planet has ever seen, the F1. Introduced in late 1992, the F1 was a special car. Carbon fiber was exotic at that time and used extensively. It had 24K gold heat shields in the engine compartment, not unlike the space shuttle. Like a Grand Prix racer, you sat in the center of the chassis. The BMW S70/2 V12 that powered it was so great, that it endured a complete racing season without a rebuild. They took it to LeMans in 1995 and it won the overall victory. Twenty-odd years later, guys like me think that it is still the acme of sports car design, and the fact that they are now worth several times the original $800,000 asking price should be all the evidence that you need.

So who can top the legend? Ferrari has tried with the spectacular Enzo and fell short. The 1000+ horsepower Bugatti Veyron seems like an obvious choice, but it’s way too heavy to be a car that could see motorsport duty. The ‘who’ is the one and only McLaren Automotive and the car is the P1. P1, slang for “pole position”, which is quite ballsy considering McLaren’s 2013 Formula 1 performance. No matter, all reports is that the car is the new benchmark for hypercars. While us Porsche guys have been dreaming about the sublime new 918, McLaren has raised the bar beyond even what the engineers from Stuttgart can create. While I can drone on about how phenomenal this car is, like I’ve actually driven it, you all realize that I’m just another moron, so restraining orders from both McLaren and owners will keep me 500 feet between my ass and sweet, sweet McLaren leather. Viva technology, but I still prefer the naturally aspirated, non hybrid goodness of the F1.

Jeremy Clarkson and Chris Harris have both actually spent some time behind the P1Â’s wheel, so letÂ’s see what they have to say. [Ed. note: You can skip to the 28:18 mark for Harris' summation, but the entire video, especially the track test, is fantastic.]

Beauty of the Week: Unlike last weekÂ’s beauty, the Â’63 Corvette Stingray, it didnÂ’t take 50 years for this car to reach a level of hideousness that ought to be illegal. A dozen years after its birth, the fabulous Jaguar XK-E had turned into a Marxist built monstrosity. But screw that thing, letÂ’s talk about one of GodÂ’s gifts to the automotive world, the original E Type. How something so perfect was designed by an aerodynamicist and not a stylist is beyond me. Anyway, thereÂ’s nothing that I can say that would add much to what has already been written by so many others.

Some hotness for the Moronettes:

And, yes. Ashton Kutcher is hitting it:

8 Technically, the Venom is still Tuner Car, not a Production Car, so no Guiness Record.  When one registers one, it is classified as a Lotus, which is the core Unibody on which the Venom is built.

9 I don't think I would call that car above a "production car". But I agree with the XKE back a few years as a great car for styling. But last week's split window (which I missed) is still my favorite production car. *** Yep. That's why I used the quote marks. The article says that a "production" vehicle is one of which 30 or more cars are produced.

10 Technically, the Venom is still Tuner Car, not a Production Car, so no Guiness Record. When one registers one, it is classified as a Lotus, which is the core Unibody on which the Venom is built. *** the Guiness standards for "production" are not the same as what you or I would classify as production. Even still, this speed record will not be recorded officially because Guiness requires that 30 of the cars be produced and they are only producing 29 of them.

24 Greatest event in motorsports? Le Mans? Monaco GP? Any 24-hour race at the old Nurburgring Nordschliefe? Dutch GP at Spa-Francorchamps (oops, we don't get those any more)? SCCA Runoffs? Bonneville Speedweek? Any significant land-speed record effort? I like NASCAR on road courses and know a couple people who work in that industry but as racin' goes...not really.

27 Any morons driving a Chevy Cobalt or similar GM product* from the mid-2000's, beware the ignition switch recall, and only use the ignition key (no heavy key chains) and get to the dealer ASAP. - The faulty switch can cause the car to shut down while moving, and a heavy key chain can hasten the fault.

*2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007 Pontiac G5, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles.

29 Hennessey seems to have rescued his reputation from the time ten years ago when the number of people who'd spent huge sums of money with the guy and gotten bupkus in return would take a whole cheerleaders' squad of fingers and camel toes to count.

Posted by: JEM at March 01, 2014 12:08 PM (o+SC1)

30 I read on another website that Guiness' rules also require a run in each direction, and NASA wouldn't let Hennessey do that for some reason. *** Yep. They address that in the article at the link. Hennessey may have hit the 270mph mark, but they did it in one direction only and in a non-production car. Still, impressive.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at March 01, 2014 12:09 PM (DmNpO)

31 I don't really like a bunch of stuff on my keychain anyway, but sometimes it's useful. The Mustang's ignition switch is right above my right knee, if there is anything much hanging from the keychain it pokes me in the knee. I would have liked it better if they had put the switch at the top of the column rather than the bottom.

33 Indy 500 was the greatest before IRL.  Old Indy 500 qualifying rules were awesome. 4 Laps at the absolute edge.  Bumping out slower qualifiers on 4 day of qualifying.  More than 50 cars fighting for 33 car starting grid.

Best current series might be Aussie V8 Supercars - heavyweight road course racing - similar weight/power of NASCAR, but based on actual stock GM/Ford/Volvo/Nissan bodies

57 @33 - Indycar has gone up and down a bunch of times since...well, 1911. Up, up, and up until 1928, then the Depression 'junk formula' that reintroduced the antique concept of the 'riding mechanic' (human ballast and almost guaranteed twice the body count in a wreck), the Wilbur Shaw Maserati era, the Novi and the roadsters and the zombie-like domination of the antique Offy four, Lotus kicking butt with the rear-engine cars, the turbines and Goossen's Last Stand with the Ford V8 and finally the Cosworth DFX and the silver spike in the Offy's heart, and then there's the last thirty years, about which I know much less. If you need a little reading material, Griff Borgeson's 'The Golden Age of the American Racing Car'. http://www.alibris.com/The-Golden-Age-of-the-American-Racing-Car-Griffith-Borgeson/book/2648849

75 JEM, don't you mean the Meyer-Drake V8 as Goossen's last stand?

Posted by: Stringer Davis at March 01, 2014 01:04 PM (xq1UY)

76 @64 - NASCAR peaked in the early to mid '60s. But as the automakers got more creative - the 'high-riser' and SOHC Fords, the hemi Mopars, etc - every time NASCAR banned something the racing got a little less interesting. In some ways the racing got better when they went to the 'intermediates' in the mid '60s, but they sputtered through the '70s and into the early '80s and once they accepted FWD production sheetmetal on spec 'silhouette car' chassis in the '80s it was over for me. Some of the hardware's useful in vintage cars and open-track ponycars, but NASCAR as a series can suck eggs as far as I'm concerned.

78 24 hours of Lemons or Chump Cars is the way to go these days. Down in the weeds bare knuckle racing the way it should be done, no big budgets, no taking yourself seriously, just buy a car for 500 bucks and throw a roll cage in it. Serious fun.

79 @78 - well, 'safety equipment' like wheels and tires and brakes and fire bottles and the like are free, and there's a lot of prep-work in addition to throwing in a cage, so if you've got three friends who know their tools you can go ChumpCar or LeMons but it's gonna take about a $5K buy-in and a few thousand a year to stay on the grid...

80 If they was hauling moonshine whiskey and shooting at each other would be interesting.

Still a lot cheaper than the other venues, and tons more fun. The rest of them take themselves way too seriously.

82 And now...off to work. Later roonz and roonettez, fear no evil!

83 @77 I did some looking. The Ford, Foyt and Drake V8's were entirely different. And the Drake V8 was by Hans Hermann, not Leo. It appears that Goossen's only V8 was the Winfield Special (you know, Novi).

He did do a later version of the Offenhauser Four, with a less steep valve angle, apparently for turbo. They were potent in the turbo version. You'll recall that both that and the Novi were killed by rule changes, not obsolescence.

84 @81 - agreed it's tons of fun if you pick the right car. You've got to have something durable and maintainable, though. Not every $500 street car makes sense.

85 @83 thanks. I'll have to go do some looking around.

86 @85 It's a minefield! Dale Drake left Meyer-Drake and sold Ford V8s that said "Drake" on the valve cover...and he also built his own engine, a water cooled Harley, before joining with Meyer. So there's a lot of Drakes out there!

Watch for this: many and many a time, a lifetime ago, I heard of a bastard engine, a V8 made by welding up a common crankcase for two Offy 4's. Obviously, never made the field, and I have never seen one. But you know it's got to be out there.

87 This years 24 Hours of Daytona had some questionable crap happen. The thing that stood out to me was near the end of the race: United Sportscar Series got all NASCARy and screwed up the end (a mysterious yellow flag appeared. got to bunch up the cars, fer tha show!!). If the series would just let things play out on the track, it will be alright. The France family doesn't run things like that though. Its racertainment, not sports.  Everything is managed to the inch. Thats why the fans of the former ALMS are a little irritated with the new series.

88 The Daytona race was boring as shit. NASCAR has now tweaked the cars so much one fucking driver in the lead closed off the entire draft and any driver could close off another lane from forming.
