In 1964 Reagan made an impassioned plea for Goldwater. The whole thing is worth listening to, I do a couple of times a year. It's his Â“A time for choosingÂ” speech.

Reagan's time has passed. You don't like that, but it's true. This is now Choom Boy's time, and the time of all who believe what he believes, and Reagan's vision is as dead as the Passenger Pigeon.

Yes, we could restore that America, but I see no one who has the vision, guts and skill to do it. Instead, I see a bunch of people who give lip service to the values of the real America and keep bringing up a speech that is no longer relevant.

Anyone who can unearth the actual revised version will have provided the somewhat flagging anti-GOPe movement a burst of renewal.

32 The problem is not the words, or the ideas. I was a kid then, and actually remember watching this speech on TV. Although he was campaigning for Goldwater, this speech was actually "the beginning" of Reagan's political career (although this was not actually the beginning). The problem is the people, the country. When Ronald Reagan made this speech (for the losing side, I might add), it was still well received and politely received by the opposition. Today the speech is more important than ever, if someone would give it and use the same words. It would be very popular with some, and the counter reaction would be vicious. The reach of neo-Marxist ideas NOW is such that everything is political, and there is now no limit to how much you can be attacked for any belief or idea which you might espouse. So speech is chilled, and people are afraid. Now more than ever, we need people who will stand up to say things like this. Now more than ever, we get Rand Paul equivocating on voter rights and voter rolls and making it a point that ex-felons get to vote, Jeb Bush talking about inviting every poor Mexican into the US for "love", and Chris Christy eating every donut in sight. I don't really know what road we go down to get our country back

However, I seem to recall a small ragtag bunch of folks whose leader was only around for a few years before he was cruelly executed by the Establishment of the day, yet those few went on to become a force which overturned the Roman Empire and changed the course of human civilization. 68 Politics is the "art" of the possible. Great Ideas and high ideals are where we point to, where we aspire to go. But it is not going to be possible to reach those in the next election, or the next set of elections. Setting up a condition that is impossible to actually reach only makes people more angry and frustrate. I only really want three things out of the Federal government. 1) live within your means (financially) 2) live within the boundary of the Constitution 3) respect the limitations of Federal Power and recognize the States limited autonomy under our Federalist system. That's it. If we can get that, a lot of positive things will flow from it. Positive changes will occur downstream in the years to come.

Posted by: Carol That's because Reagan was a very practiced public speaker, and an actor (okay). He would learn his speech lines, practice, and deliver them in a very personable way. During the '50's, he worked for GE and spoke at a lot of different employee gatherings about GE policies, goals, etc. He really polished his public speaking skills, after years of being an actor, and before that working on radio. Obama is not really that good a public speaker. Besides being a sociopathic cold fish, he easily gets confused if he misses his cues, and is frankly a very difficult speaker to listen to because of his cadence. His vulgar insincerity is typified by his remark when speaking to Planned Parenthood that they "are doing God's work". Vulgar pagan liar. Besides his developed speaking skills, Ronald Reagan was also a very naturally empathic person with his audience. There were times he did things in public that made him connect directly with his audience. If you recall, there was a charter flight that crashed with a planeload of military personnel on board in th '80's, I think all were killed. What it was shot question answer session where at the very end of the session he said he thought Republicans overemphasized voter ID but we did need something to keep dead people from voting.

Yes. I used to believe they were mistaken. Too many times I have seen the private comments that prove otherwise. Now, what was once hidden is often revealed openly. Pro abortion activists, for instance, used to obfuscate, muddying the waters of where life begins and claiming no one wants abortion. Now they celebrate it on Mother's Day. What could be more brazen? What could be more twisted?

Many people find it easier to ignore those types of indicators because to realize that you are facing evil is to know that you must oppose it. Furthermore, you have to decide how far you must go to oppose it and if you are willing to pay the price that will come with those lengths.

Reagan took out a loan to buy the end of decades of actual and potential conflict. In doing so he set up the dominant military you see today.

Yes, the EPA today is a horrific agency, the epitome of bureaucratic overreach and extra-legal rule by fiat. I get that, and were it up to me it would be one of the first agencies that I'd abolish completely. However, back in the 70s we needed an EPA. Rivers, actual water filled rivers, were catching on fire because they were so polluted for God's sake. The solution is to authorize any govt agency for a limited amount of time and for a specific purpose and require Congress to proactively reauthorize it when that time's up. Job's done, agency disbands. Not done, reauthorize for another set period of time. The EPA is a problem because it's morphed light years from it's intended purpose.

IIRC, every state pretty much has its own EPA equivalent, so there's no point in an out-of-control federal bureaucracy with its boot on the neck of the economy. And being trillions of dollars in debt should be the perfect selling point for the elimination of entire agencies. Some enterprising group of individuals could make a few political points on this alone, should they choose to do so.
