— Ace Many on the right are claiming this sketch "makes fun" of Obama.*
There's an odd thing on the right, where they repeatedly claim that what are objectively pro-Obama sketches and claim that they're goofing on Obama or "ripping" on him.
The below sketch, written in the patented recent SNL style (by which I mean it's not funny and relies almost entirely on minor references to minor celebrities for mere "oh I know who that is" recognition reactions than actual humor value), is pro-Obama and pro-Obamacare from start to finish.
Obama is depicted as a reluctant pitchman for Obamacare. He doesn't want to embarrass himself by doing these social media stunts to advertise for Obamacare. He has more dignity (and less ego) than that.
He's only drawn into these schemes by third parties, who, in this sketch, are the butt of the joke. Here, that third party is the WH's social media outreach guru, depicted as a nerdy freak.
Whenever Obama objects to her schemes, his advisor reminds him of all the people who desperately need health insurance, whom Obama has sworn to help. And then Obama goes through with the advert.
Almost all of SNL's Obama sketches are like this now -- and by "like this" I mean "not funny." And they're specifically unfunny because they're written as relentless pieces of boosterism and apologism for Obama.
* Maybe this is semantic. When I read "makes fun of Obama," I take it to mean that Obama is the target of the jokes, that he's being attacked.
All the SNL Obama sketches do (for the past several years) is put Obama into a situation in which funny things are happening around him (well, in theory, funny things are happening around him). But this isn't "making fun of" him. At most, this is... I don't know what you'd call it. Dealing with him "irreverently," I suppose, as Life of Brian handled the Jesus story without actually making Jesus the target of jokes.
It's a standard comedy trope that when you have silly crap happening, you need someone playing "The Only Sane Man in the Room" to react to it. The audience sees its own reaction in The Only Sane Man, and winds up identifying with The Only Sane Man.
These sorts of sketches -- making Obama the put-upon Only Sane Man -- are not making fun of him. At worst for Obama, they're merely goofing on the things that a thoughtful, dignified, brilliant man must do to Get Poor People Insured.
I don't know if this frequent mischaracterization of SNL's many pro-Obama sketches as somehow "anti-Obama" is a play for viral links (in hopes that the right will link the posts celebrating the alleged sketch that "rips on" Obama), or if people on the right are so desperate to have SNL's validation that they're seeing things that just aren't present in the sketches.

I bet he could have done a good Obama. I think I've seen the guy who does it on SNL. I get the impression he only has the job because he can sorta look like Obama.

Dead-on. A strange and ubiquitous phenomenon. Maybe it's denial or wishful thinking. So many people on the right just want to believe so badly that the media is turning on Obama. No, they're not. And no, they won't. Ever. Ever. Figure it out.

Is this kind of misunderstanding to the Right, though? I think it's just that most people simply don't understand comedy. In that case the analysis goes no further than this:
(a) SNL depicts Obama; ergo
(b) SNL must be making jokes about Obama.

Man, I dunno. Not all that is called humor is funny, nor is it meant to be actually. Really scathing satire certainly isn't funny, if the target is general rather than specific.
I'm not saying that's what this is. It's not satirizing the entirety of our system. Unless one would argue it is. Which I don't think the entire cast of SNL has the braincells to muster up.
The only form of humor the Liberal set has down pat is really sarcasm anyway. The rest is all goon humor. Maybe thats why SNL is so tiresome now.

So your saying that if it's "funny" and people don't laugh then it's the audience's fault that there's no humorous exchange between comedian and audience.
Yeah. Advice: don't go into comedy.
Also, just as some side advice, if you are in advertising and no one buys your product, it's the consumer's fault, because obviously the advertising was so clever they didn't understand it.

I suggested that maybe people don't understand that the joke isn't on Obama because they don't understand the mechanics of comedy. They see no further than the fact that Obama is in a sketch and presume that this alone shows that he's the joke.

The answer is no to question 1.
To question 2, I'd say the answer is probably. Will someone watching SNL at 11:30 Saturday night grab his laptop and go buy insurance? Probably not.
But this was still a free commercial for Obama where healthcare.gov was shown on the screen for 45-60 seconds. This is the kind of ad time Coke or Honda pays millions of dollars for. Nobody is sitting on the couch and sees a Honda commercial and runs out to buy a Honda. But seeing a Honda commercial over and over and over puts a little thought in your head next time you need a car...BUY A HONDA. You don't know that the message is there, but it's there. Which is why advertizing works.
So for those millions of SNL viewers, they don't know it, but the message of "I should buy some Obamacare" got planted, or if it was there already, made a little louder.

You know what's weird? I haven't watched SNL in years, loved the first cast etc. haven't found it watchable for longer than I can remember. But Howard Stern is such a good interviewer that he has former cast members on and they all become fascinating, and the intrigues on the show seem to matter.
I still couldn't get through that Obama skit though.

When SNL does a skit about somebody on their team, they always do it in a "good natured ribbing" sort of way.
For example, the skit done on Billy Jeff Clinton within a year of his inauguration in 1993 (yes, I'm that old) "made fun" of Clinton as he jogged with his secret service detail. In the skit he jogs into a McDonald's and starts eating everyone's fries. But while doing it, he spouts a bunch of "smartest guy in the room" policy wonk shite.
OTOH, Bush is portrayed as an idiot, relentlessly, etc., etc.

___________
SNL was very pro-Clinton but they still managed to do some really funny Clinton skits. Now of course, none of those skits were ever about Clinton policy. It was always about Clinton being a womanizing asshole. But it was still funny.
I think with Obama there is such a fear of being labeled a racist, that you just can't write anything funny about him. Think of a writer on SNL...are you going to risk your entire career to write a funny Obama skit? I sure as hell wouldn't.

BYU has a televised comedy sketch team called Studio C, finally got around to seeing an ep. They had this skit about Renaissance artists going into the future to see their legacies...plus Marco Polo, whom the others rag on. (And yes there was a TMNT joke, since the artists are the same ones the turtles were named for.) I think I laughed more watching that than all the sketches from the past few SNL cycles. If a squeaky clean local Mormon comedy troupe is funnier than your nationally broadcasted sketch show that has the pick of comedians nationwide, you're doing it wrong... (kidding, Mormons!)

Autumn Fizz
Written by: Gilda Radner & Alan Zweibel
Woman.....Gilda Radner
Man.....Chevy Chase [ open on Woman dressed finely as she sits on her bed ]
Woman: I love being a woman. Feeling fresh, soft, and fragrant makes me glad I'm myself. I like to be pampered in silk and flowing chiffon. The finer things of life. And being feminine means being fresh and clean. When I think of the finest in jewelry, I think of Tiffany and Cartier. And, when I think of feminine hygiene, I think of Autumn Fizz -- [ she holds up the product ] the carbonated douche. Autumn Fizz gives me the confidence a woman needs in today's hectic world. It brings out the natural fragrance of femininity, with the effervescence of un-cola.
[ her boyfriend enters, dressed in a tux, and sits on the bed behind her ]
Woman: Autumn Fizz -- [ she burps ] the carbonated douche. [ they exchange glances ] Don't leave him holding the bag.
Man: Thank you.
[ she hands each bottle to her boyfriend ]
Woman: Now, in strawberry... lemon... and egg cream.
Still pretty funny.

The comment was on propaganda humor. Cutting politicians for their failures and foibles can be very funny, but propaganda humor doesn't have funny as its first job. Job #1 is the propaganda and that usually kills the funny for me - too heavy handed.

Far from the most practical damage to the country, but the degradation of America in the current era has such sickening overtones of the worst police states. I mean this reverent, unfunny, "humor" about the great leader - who has been an embarrassing, disastrous, unfit, stumbling idiot since he entered the public eye, 35 minutes before being elected president.
And of course the jaw-dropping fan-boyism and sycophancy about his racist, nasty, ignorant wife. Her fashions! Her arms! (WTF?)
It's the Ceaucescus. It's the silly dictators from early Woody Allen flicks or the original "In-Laws".
It's beyond words, really. I use "degradation" because it seems to fit. A disastrous, lawless, clueless, ruinous "leader" who is celebrated and cult-worshipped.
Ace you've been pushed to this several times in the last few months, and it captures (I think) what many normal thoughtful Americans feel: "Is this America?"

Like Obama, Kerry just wasn't that funny.
Here's how you do Obama: 1) He's physically awkward, geeky. He has a birdlike walk. If he bends over to get something, for example, his right foot goes up. 2) He's so narcissistic, he doesn't get it when people are insulting him. He thinks negative comments must be an ironic form of praise, for example. 3) Because of that narcissism, he has no interpersonal boundaries. So, f/x, if he walks into a restaurant for a photo op, he eats people's fries and drinks their sodas while socializing and ends up kissing some guy's girlfriend. 4) He's so arrogant, he thinks every thought that he pulls out of his pocket is *golden*. So, f/x, he doesn't have to study any issue, and he knows better than everyone, and tosses out solutions with the air of a king: "That music (Bach) could be better. It has too many notes. Have the composer take some away." 5) He has no idea when he's being stupid.

Or just needs to find a different audience? Not necessarily a failure, but you DO need to play to the room you are in when you are in it. I love Eddie Izzard's stand up to death (or cake), but if you don't have a solid understanding of history a lot of it goes right over your head. Luckily he has enough of a draw now that he can play to an audience who gets him.

There's a purpose to it. They don't have to give out raises if everyone is just average. Saves a lot of money that way.

No, seriously. My review went really well. It is two weeksish later when this, "sorry we have to go back and change your review, the VP said we have to" bullshit is happening.

Romney has the huge strike against him of having picked Ryan.
Ryan, the abruptly revealed "Mr. Amnesty" poster boy.
Ryan, who decided that out of the entire enormous federal budget, the only thing he could find and agree to cut were military pensions.
Ryan, who got rudely manhandled in a nationally televised debate by a guy who is functionally retarded.
Even if Romney picked someone else (please!), the bad Ryan odor remains.

I had that happen with one of my reviews. You could actually see where they had erased some numbers to change them into the "average" rating. I was told they didn't have the money that year to give out any real raises. Everyone was getting average.
Really makes you want to work harder.

You dishonest utter turd. You absolutely illiterate douchebag. At no point did I say that Gwyneth Paltrow or her ilk are noble. I said that acting is noble. And honrable.
That has nothing to do with any particular actor, nor does it deny that Gwyneth Paltrow is a jerk.
Seriously, go screw yourself.

Sorry, missed this becoz I was reading, T9
Its just you're conflating the title "comedian" with a job to do, that job being "making people laugh", but thats not always the goal of comedy, as a genre.
A satirist is a form of comedian, but he's doing satire to tear down a public figure, for example, or a social more. Voltaire did that with Candide, and a lot of nameless pamphleteers did that during the 1600-1700s.
Other types of comedy intentionally take on social stigmas or cultural taboos in order to break them or change them. They're never funny. Is the movie War of the Roses a comedy? Yes. What about Punch Drunk Love? Yes. Lars and the Real Girl? Yep.
Its kind of why The Comedian in the Watchmen series is actually a comedian, but is never funny. He's the dark funhouse inversion of reality, but what he's showing you is more painfully true than what you initially thought.
All I'm saying is that Comedy proper is a bigger thing than stand up routines and half of it is lost, honestly. Because it doesn't pay and it is hard.

I think he dodged a massive bullet, not getting elected, tbh. All the failures of Obamacare would have been dumped on his shoulders instead of the God King. He would have been the one that let it fail, if he for some reason was not able to repeal it like he planned. His fault the website is screwed. Also Obama's brand of foreign policy is rearing its ugly head, a lot of bad will built up over the last years that he would have gotten blamed for.
Would have been a good president fiscally, but his time has passed. But no way is Christie ever repealing Obamacare, if Coulter still plays cheerleader for him after all this she will greatly disappoint me.

Agreed. It irks me when people on the Right crow about an MSM article, sitcom, news broadcast, comedy skit, et al that is even tangentially critical of the President. One can't decry the bias of the MSM while simultaneously seeking its favor. That's like a beaten dog begging for table scraps.
Our views about President Obama (or anything else) don't need validation by the fucking Agitprop Division of the Democratic Party.

It did remind the viewer over and over to sign up, and to think of all the poor poor poor people out there that need obamacare so very much. Bah!
On our local news this morning and afternoon they repeated OVER AND OVER that today was the deadline! Don't forget! The fricken thing was weird - I've never seen anything like it in my life.
So, they would remind you to sign up, then mention a minor bit of local news, then again pitch obamacare, then the local temps, then back to "don't forget to sign up"!
