Saturday Political Thread: Jeux sans frontieres [WeirdDave]
— Open Blogger

Here I am, 47 years old, and I find myself in my first serious-you-guys old man crisis. I can't stop yelling for these kids to get off my lawn country. This week we were treated to the spectacle of Tommy Vietor telling Bret Baier “Dude, that was like 2 years ago” in response to a question on Benghazi. First of all, dude looks like he's twelve years old. No fooling.

VietorWeirdDave.jpg

My daddy's the sheriff of Mayberry!

He's not, I checked, he's actually 32, and until recently he was National Security Council spokesman, one of the people in charge of formulating the public face of US policy for the world. Kind of young, but he's probably an expert, right? Doctorate from Yale, time as a fellow at a prestigious foreign policy think tank, that sort of thing? Nope, he's Obama's bus driver. Well, van driver, but at this point, what difference does it make? In 2008 he got a job schlepping the press around in Dear Leader's wake (and probably mopping up the drool from the floor of the van). He parlayed an uncanny ability to stop for red lights into a sensitive national security job, along the way developing the gravitas to go on national news program and address the host as “dude” while claiming that he couldn't remember an attack on American sovereignty that killed an ambassador because he has the attention span of a caffeinated puppy. (We should try that with Obamacare: “Dude, that was passed, like, four years ago, who cares?”) Jesus wept.

OK, one guy. Doesn't prove anything. Well, how about this young woman?

PsakiWeirdDave.jpg

That's Jen Psaki. She's 35. Y'all may recognize her as the official spokesperson for the United States of America's Department of State. Y'all may also recall that she felt that it would be the height of “smart power” to have the U.S. start a hash tag war with Russia on Twitter, and after getting her clock cleaned by Putin to whine about Russia "They have not been following up their hash tag with actions." Yes, she actually said that, there's video:

Hash tag diplomacy. She followed it up by citing Think Progress and Daily Kos as proof that Israel is an “Apartheid state”. Oy Vey. What's her Curriculum vitae? She's a press secretary. She's always been a press secretary, for various Democrat politicians, for Francis the talking mule Kerry, for OFA. A press secretary, and now she's the face of American diplomacy. America, f*** yea!

I could go on, but why bother? They're not all youngsters, Jay Carney is actually older than I am, but he seems to share the same level of sophistication, intellect and honor.

PinocchioWeirdDave.jpg

White House Press Secretary James “Jay” Carney

It occurred to me then that someone should write a song about these mewling quims, then I realized that someone already had.

“Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games, Hiding out in tree-tops, shouting out rude names.”

Such is the state of the leadership of the United States of America in the sixth year of our Lord Barack Hussein Obama (PBUH). Excuse me, but I'm going to go duck and cover like those kids in the video. Wake me when it's 2017, if there's anything left.

ETA: STILL think I'm being unfair? Wanna know how our moral and intellectual superiors spend their spare time in Washington? Well, here's the aforementioned Vieter and chief speechwriter Jon Favreau just chilling on a Sunday in DC. Is it too much to expect administration officials to act like, you know, adults, not frat boys?

FratBoysWeirdDave.jpg

When I rule the world, anyone over 25 who plays beer pong will be lined up against the wall and pummeled mercilessly with ping pong balls

Open thread to discuss politics and such.

[PS from Y-not: WeirdDave sent this to go with the Gardening thread (which will be about canning this week, per reader requests), but that won't go up until later and it's been a couple of hours since the last thread... so have at it and enjoy!]

22 Basically this Princeton kid wrote an essay blasting this whole white privilege thing. Here's an excerpt: Perhaps itÂ’s the privilege my grandfather and his brother had to flee their home as teenagers when the Nazis invaded Poland, leaving their mother and five younger siblings behind, running and running until they reached a Displaced Persons camp in Siberia, where they would do years of hard labor in the bitter cold until World War II ended. Maybe it was the privilege my grandfather had of taking on the local RabbiÂ’s work in that DP camp, telling him that the spiritual leader shouldnÂ’t do hard work, but should save his energy to pass Jewish tradition along to those who might survive. Perhaps it was the privilege my great-grandmother and those five great-aunts and uncles I never knew had of being shot into an open grave outside their hometown. Maybe thatÂ’s my privilege.

27 Weird Dave You are upset because you still have hope and because you believe that the America we loved is still alive. Once you realize that the reelection of Barack Obama is only an indicator that something went profoundly wrong sometime ago, you can stop being so upset about dangers to something that already died, you won't be quite as upset and angry. Only sad.

35 "Wanna know how our moral and intellectual superiors spend their spare time in Washington? Well, here's the aforementioned Vieter and chief speechwriter Jon Favreau just chilling on a Sunday in DC."

If this were a Republican administration, one may reliably be assured that the institutional left would be having shrieking conniption fits over the "lack of diversity" on display in that photograph. A veritable sea of whiteness.

Posted by: torquewrench at May 03, 2014 05:48 AM (noWW6)

36 Yeah, I think this started with Clinton, but Obama certainly has embraced the Kids Are In Charge thing. To be fair, we (or "they" in the GOP) have our share of children who insert themselves into the political dialog, but for now they don't seem to be in charge of anything. But if the GOP wins the WH back, I wouldn't be surprised to see the spawn of some of our GOPers pop up.

45 I just linked this in a comment at Neo-Neocon, and while I have it handy, here are the "Current Communist Goals" that were read into the Congressional Record in 1963: http://www.uhuh.com/nwo/communism/comgoals.htm (From "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen) 1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war. 2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war. 3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength. 4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war. 5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites. 6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination. 7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N. 8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N. 9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress. 10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N. 11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.) 12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party. 13. Do away with all loyalty oaths. 14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office. 15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States. 16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights. 17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks. 18. Gain control of all student newspapers. 19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack. 20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions. 21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures. 22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms." 23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art." 24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press. 25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV. 26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy." 27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch." 28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state." 29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis. 30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man." 31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over. 32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc. 33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus. 34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities. 35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI. 36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions. 37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business. 38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat]. 39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals. 40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce. 41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents. 42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems. 43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government. 44. Internationalize the Panama Canal. 45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike. *** From the vantage point of 2014, that reads like a progress report.

53 "Hillary will be a fine president. She won't do anything, the GOP won't do anything, the democrat party will keep doing what it has been doing and everything will be status quo."

There was that spate of articles in the last few days about how The Money, the bipartisan establishment mega-donor class, have basically decreed from on high that 2016 will be your choice, Hillary or Jeb. Pick any one of the two.

Oh, you don't like Hillary? Have some Jeb. What, Jeb is not to your taste? Then perhaps Hillary will be. What, other choices? I'm sorry, but this is what you have available.

Because neither one of those two will do very much rocking of the boat in which The Money floats, and The Money prefer it that way. (It's a very nice boat indeed.) Status quo ad infinitum.

However, I think that the idea of a comfortably continuing status quo is going to fail pretty spectacularly at some point, and that point may occur before 2016.

Everything that made us great still shines through the layer of filth deposited on it.

I will continue, in my small way, to cleanse that filth. My kids and their kids will also do their part.

Because they have been raised to understand what this country is about.

It's just base racism dressed up in some academic verbiage to take the edge off. They should just man up and say what they mean. They believe White People suck and should be punished for the sins of long dead people with similar skin tones. They believe in blood libel, that White People are born with the sins of all White People for All Time -- and that they deserve to suffer for those sins. It's really evil. Which is why they won't say what they mean.

113 Beer Pong is an interesting analogy for that group. It is an organized game that requires everyone to show up, choose sides and compete, but one without formal rules. It is pursued as seriously as the contestants feel is necessary and what rules are enforced are done at the behest of the majority, or whatever majority that can be mustered temporarily, and are generally only developed and proposed for personal, local advantage. Play and technique are generally more an element of personal prejudice than result, and the goal of being seen to be successful is more important than actual outcome. Further, the goal of beer pong is not to win, not to place, not to play, not even to avoid personal harm and social disability, but as a pretext to get drunk. Personally I think beer pong is for a bunch of timid mergansers who look for the perception of competition and skill while actually trying to hide from their fear of social ineptness. If you want to play a game drunk, do it like men and play Jarts, over-arm bocci, or full-contact twister.

His experience in Houston was living near the Rice campus in the fancy area called West U. His experience with the "real" Houston was nil. Then someone felt sorry for him and introduced him to Lee Hamilton which led to his further experience in writing fiction for the Iraq Study Group. He is also a affectionado of playing video games all night which may be a clue as to why he looks like he just crawled out of a hole into bright daylight.

I remember when Dana Perino was told by George Bush that she was not to say anything about Scott McClellan going out and trashing the administration in a book after he left his press secretary position. Yeah, I know what you mean. I didn't have that problem much in my years on the shop floor or in engineering offices. Poseurs and fakirs were shown the door rapidly, they weren't hard to spot. Oft times, the benefits of a good employee is difficult to quantify and almost impossible to put on a P&L sheet at the end of the month. If all the manager is looking at is numbers, how can you put a dollar amount on the parts you didn't have to rework? Then again, there is so much financial pressure to pay for regulations that have nothing to do with the direct costs, I can understand wanting to get cheaper help.

180 For everyone dealing with hard water problems, especially plugged coffeemakers and stains, forget the CLR. What you want is Nickel Safe Ice Machine Cleaner from your friendly local HVAC supplier. Phosphoric acid so be safe, don't get on skin or in eyes. Otherwise very low-key action and will remove the stuff very quickly. OK for stainless (nickel-safe) and ok for aluminum and porcelain or other acrylic sinks. Moderate price and worth every penny. Can use full strength for thick accumulations, otherwise dilute. Rinse well. So much better than all the other junk you will be sold.

Once you realize that the reelection of Barack Obama is only an indicator that something went profoundly wrong sometime ago, you can stop being so upset about dangers to something that already died, you won't be quite as upset and angry. Only sad. Posted by: Obnoxious A Hole at May 03, 2014 09:47 AM (TKk/U) Of course. Then I can take my kin and withdraw to a cabin in the mountains, hunting and fishing to survive until the feds go all Randy Weaver on my ass. Forgive me if that's not my first choice?

247 These clowns working for Obama are not "Young Turks". They are however, young turds.

248 What's the German word for floating turd?

250 This is a wonderful thread. Except for one little problem. These imbeciles piss me off badly. I'm on vacation, I got to run away from this shit for awhile

251 See comment 150 for the crux of problem.

I say that all the time, not gonna change any time soon either.

253 Weird Dave I don't think that is really anybody's first choice. My first choice would be to live out my natural life in the country I was born in, try to be a productive citizen, raise my kids well and try to leave everybody a little better off for their dealings with me. We are way past Plan B now and soon to run out of alphabet. I hope that you and the optimists are right and we don't get to the "die in a pile of recently fired shell casings" scenario but I am no longer convinced that that is a crazy paranoid fantasy.

255 You give me too much credit when you put me in the optimist camp, I'm an historian, I know how this shit always ends. However. We are still at a point where optimism is the best tool, and hell, it might even work, crazier things have happened, so I'm optimistic. When the time for optimism is gone, I'll prepare to join you face down in my spent brass, covered with my own shit, piss and blood, but since I view that outcome as sub-optimal, for the time being I'm sticking with optimism. Historically, the entire founding and premise of this nation was unprecedented, there's no reason it's salvation should be otherwise. I hope.

256 I have this giant magnet, what's the name of the lake? "I lost my Mossberg 500 this morning".

257 Let's not forget the lovely blonde 32 y.o. Israel-hating Kerry spokeswomyn, Marie Harf, who apparently boasts MAJOR responsibility for Obama's fantastically successful MidEast policy:

258 Just looking at that wet behind the ears, souless, clueless tool and knowing that it was in the situation room during a time of national crisis....terrifies me. And the fact that the administration doesn't even pause before putting a sheeple political follower into a position of power regarding national security AND has no shame putting same said tool on national television to explain a terrorist attack on our embassy, tells me that we are utterly lost as a nation. I'm appalled and sad. We are just so screwed.

259 You're probably right, Lester, these are nothing more than sick, sick boys. Frats have to continually prove themselves worthy these days, and do!

This glad hander was in the Situation Room and not the president...terrifying.

260 "Condi is continuing the Bush tradition of running from the first sign of uphappy libs. They NEVER stood up to the bullies."

Amen, sistah.

ALSO, we saw the video of those assholes in the NY "news," and guess what? They're all mooselimbs. Every. Damned. One.

She should have gone there and made a speech for America and against jihad that would have blown the roof off.

But, no.

Because that would be alright.
