LET'S PURGE ALL THE THINGS
Caveat: I just saw this on Twitter and I honestly don't know if this is real. It didn't occur to me to check. I'll check now.
Well, seems sort of real:
The comments made by our former community manager stand in stark contrast to our values as a game development studio. <1/2>
— Turtle Rock Studios (@TurtleRock) May 1, 2014Yeah, it seems real.

Hmm...
Apparently Turtle Rock did Left 4 Dead and... um... Left 4 Dead.
They've got a new game coming out supposedly later this year called Evolve that afaik no one knows anything about (the name was revealed because publishing rights went up for auction when THQ went bankrupt).
Color me unimpressed.
Sucks about the guy they fired though.

Turtle Rock Studios is a game studio known for work on Left 4 Dead and Counterstrike. They have a game called Wild they're banking on.
I have no idea why they're sacking their "Community Manager" for recognizing the true meaning of the First Amendment.

Speaking of..."Purge".
They're coming out with second movie about 'The Purge'.
The first one kind of sucked, so of course, they have to make a second one.
With new and improved gonzo carnage.
Although, the idea of being able to legally go out and commit mass murder for One Day A Year...is a rather intriguing idea.
I'm thinking that Washington, DC would probably be Ground Zero.

Here it is
CNN asks if it was legal to record and release Sterling's rant. They discuss State law but fail to mention it was also a violation of federal law, namely the electronic communications privacy act (18 U.S. Code § 2511). There are no provisions under the act for federal punishment, however he can seek damages from his ex-wife. If he has to fight the NBA in court she will be liable for all the costs, including the cost of the team if he loses it.
I hope she is aware of the shit storm she has made herself liable for. And CNN should do a little research before they publish shit. And speaking of CNN and other news services who are publishing her crap, perhaps they should talk to their lawyers as well. They are not exempt from this law.

Companies that operate in "at will" states can fire for any reason they'd like. He could bring an action, but he would not succeed. The First Amendment only applies to Governments infringement on someone's free speech.

I think the company is shitty as hell for this kind of shit. I could see them firing him if he did some statement trashing the company itself but not this,
But what I have found in my lifetime is that companies who do this kind of shit to their employees don't last long. The other employees start bailing at first job opportunity and nobody will hire on. Word does get around.

Wouldn't a company have to 'expressly set forth' the things that are fire-able offenses?
Like:
"These are OUR VALUES"
-- and then list them.
And if they don't do that...then how does an employee know what their 'Values' are?

And if the unions were smart, they'd start promising that they include protection against firing for freedom of speech issues and include that bennie in any workers contract negotiations.
And if it is any comfort, the fired guy will certainly be eligible to draw unemployment pay as there is no way they can defend his firing as 'for cause' to a Labor Board.

The First Amendment is not the beginning and end of freedom of speech in the US.
It's also a larger cultural value that allowed people a certain space to express views and participate in our political process without the entirety of their life being at risk over it. And that space is quickly being eroded as the number of speechcrimes and thoughtcrimes that result in you losing your job and being purged from decent society grows. This is a very bad thing.
And yes the company's actions are completely legal. Which tells you nothing about whether they're moral, just, or part of the American ethos. The slave factories in China are also completely legal.

No, you are reading that wrong. Under federal law, it is illegal to intercept someone else's call. If George is on a call with Bob, and I somehow am able to secretly intercept that call, that is illegal. But, if Bob tapes all his calls, that is not an interception or an illegal wiretap, or in any other way illegal. The federal standard in commonly referred to as "one party consent". That is, if at least one person in the conversation is aware that it is being recorded, it's legal.
California and a few other states use what is commonly called "two party consent". But, that is kind of a poor descriptor. It should be called "all party consent" or something, because what the law in those states is, is that everyone on the call has to be aware that it is recorded. Normally, that will just be two people, but if it is a conference call or something like that, every single person has to be notified.

Look I'm completely willing to stipulate that Sterling is a loathsome old bigot.
And being a racist bigot is a bad thing. But it's not a crime and it's certainly not the worst of all crimes. But many people seemed to have placed racism somewhere between manslaughter and sexual assault on the scale of grave offenses and want a correspondingly harsh punishment for it.

Private Thoughts, Public Punishment
The owner of the L. A. Clippers, Donald Sterling, has been fined $2.5 Million dollars and banned for life from the MBA, and may even have his team forcible taken from him. Allow your humble author to be blunt: I do not know what Sterling specifically said, and it does not matter what he said in regards to the points being made herein. This is not meant to defend the indefensible, but to condemn the mob.

There were back and forths between both cities, Jersey fans having signs advocating for Paul Pierce to be stabbed (after he almost lost his life in a stabbing attack). Boston fans wearing wife beater tees to the game with his name on it.

Move them goal posts! They're just too inconvenient where they are.
You had a point when you said:
The point is he was defending Sterling as a representative of the company. And he got fired because I assume the company doesn't appreciate having it's chief PR spokesman defending a guy universally loathed.
Or, at least you would have had a point if he had been using a company account to send out his commentary. But, he was using a personal account, mooting your point:

It is at times like this when I am glad he is at peace. I hope he is.
He did see Obama for what he is, however. He very clearly was disgusted that America was voting for what it had always fought against, by the very children and grandchildren of those that did the fighting.
He asked simply, "Why did so many people who did the fighting forget to teach their kids why we did it?"

Oh, and he gave Sterling a NAACP civil rights award.
His train for the re-education camps departed immediately thereafter.

The fact that people speak out for due process and the constitutional rights of the accused is EXACTLY the reason why the Duke lacrosse players are not in prison today.
If everyone kept their mouths shut due to the irrational insensitivity of a bunch of idiots, people wouldn't have their rights. They'd be convicted by the mob while you stayed pragmatic.
In my world, this is called being a coward.

Trying to figure out where this slippery slope goes.
Can an employer scrutinize the employee's tweets and fire any who confess to voting for candidates and issues the employer disapproves of?

Standing up and saying what is right and true is never wrong.
Yeah, but the Leftists think that's what they are doing.
They have redefined "what is right and true".
They think that 'Climate Change Deniers' should be put in jail...or worse.
According to the Left, they are the ones who get to decide "what is right and true".

Olin showed a lot of courage and paid for it. As most courageous people eventually have to do. Likely, we'll all have to pay the toll for standing up for what we believe someday.
Unless you're a coward and allow people's lives to be ruined to avoid upsetting the sensibilities of the fascists. Then I'm sure you'll get along just fine.

Not so fast. The fact the Duke lacrosse players were affluent and could afford first class legal counsel had a lot more to do with keeping those kids out of jail than high falutin' abstractions like speaking out for due process and the constitution.
Way too much to do with it for my comfort.

Yet, without exception, lefties believe themselves to be constantly victimized by the right.
I knew a conservative who worked in administration at a large midwestern state university. He used to say that: "there is not a gay man alive with anything to tell me about being closeted at work."

Not knowing if you can get another job is a powerful incentive to keep your mouth shut, especially in this economy. That's what these fascist are counting on.

While I think you have a point, I would also like to point out George Zimmerman. Someone not affluent by any means.
Speaking out for due process is exactly what saved him - in the form of a LOT of people contributing to his legal defense.

True. But there's a reason he was able to retain O'Mara, et.al.
Certainly not his own resources. People saw he was being railroaded, and stepped up.
Unfortunately this happens all too often when no one is aware of it. But at least when the racial grievance-mongers attempt to burn someone at the stake, and enough people find out about it, they can still stand in the way.
For now.

Given that their generation cheered Roosevelt and voted in a lot of the shit that killed the country (and the pols who sponsored it), they can't be overly pissed about it. They may not like where we've ended up, but they were a big part of getting us here.

The guy's tweets were OBVIOUSLY not in that spirit, but in a competitive industry, who needs to take time to explain to a [probably Astro-turfed] customer cohort the finer points of his argument?
Back in the pre-Net day, no-one's views wd ever be in the public domain unless they were a public figure. EXCEPT...Once in a great while, one of us plebes wd experience the awesome experience of...GETTING A LETTER PUBLISHED IN THE NEWSPAPER!! A moment in the arena!! BUT...Your employer was never identified. There was no Net for activists to triangulate you & mobilize against your employer. The letter was usually edited down to some bland pabulum, in any case...In 24 hours, your glittering comments went down the memory hole, where your boss & co-workers cdn't care less!
When I started on the Net 20+ years ago, I didn't use my real name. One day, in a moderated forum, a Muslim guy said he'd "put a bullet in my head"--the liberal moderator did nothing. This taught me that, unless you are a professional opinion-monger, that controversial views aired in public may be dangerous if even 1 sick person out there--Kimberlin, maybe?-- can determine where you live, or work. But that was before the era of these cyber lynch-mobs, which add a whole new dimension.
I guess the lesson here is, if you wish to make a strong stand against a mob opinion today, you need to at least detach from your employer. If you're self-employed, factor in a boycott possibility. Don't be blind-sided. And, I wd respectfully repeat, don't refer to a self-defined cartoonish billionaire philandering jackass like Donald Sterling as a "victim." You're just asking for trouble.
Oh, and a couple of points for the legally-inclined folks out there on Sterling:
1--He who seeks equity must come with clean hands.
2--Yes, he was probably taped unlawfully, but he shd be smart enough to remember the rule of "the unreliable ear." So maybe his ho gets a tap on the wrist, but he loses his franchise? Idiot. And the conversation is with his mistress, while he is still married. No equity for him, sorry.
