Send This Woman To Washington, D.C. And She'll Make Politicians Squell Like Pigs
— DrewM

Charles Cooke says this spot has the greatest opening line in the history of political ads. Personally I think "I'm Joani Ernst" is kind of meh but that next line is by far the greatest second line ever in the history of political ads.

And just to be *that guy*, we need to get beyond the idea that pork spending, no matter how annoying, isn't the problem. It's the entitlements, stupid. Also, does she include farm subsidies, wind power credits and the ethanol mandate as "pork" or is that good old fashioned necessary "investments"?

Still...funny ad. Which was sort of the point of this post before it got away from me for a second.

Since I'm swiping that video from Cooke you should check out his post on how the left turns on its rising stars the second they dare go off script.

24 How many times have politicians promised all that happy horseshit only to forget it as soon as the cross the belt line in DC.  I simply do not believe them anymore.

And on top of that she is in Iowa which is not known for being a "red State".  Is there anyone here who has personal knowledge of this woman?  Is she a real conservative, or another Ayote who will run as a conservative and immediately go liberal.

25 I helped my Dad castrate hogs once. The hogs didn't like it much. I learned I didn't want any mountain oysters during that session too. We tossed the used nuts to my Grandpa's skinny old bluetick hounds and they turned up their noses at them. I figgered not good enough for a dog, not good enough for me.

26 Joni Ernst (born July 1, 1970, Red Oak, Iowa) is a Republican politician, legislator, Lt. Ernst is still on active duty, currently serving as a Lt. Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard, commanding the largest battalion in Iowa. Born and raised in Montgomery County, Iowa, Senator Ernst resides in Red Oak, Iowa with her husband of 21 years, Gail, a Command Sergeant Major in the Army Rangers (retired) and their three daughters. Ernst is a member of the Montgomery County Republican Women, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2265 (Life Member), Montgomery County Court of Honor, Altrusa, PEO Chapter HB, National Rifle Association (Lifetime Member) and the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. She is a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church of Stanton, Iowa. Ernst is a graduate of Iowa State University and earned a Master's in Public Administration from Columbus College. 56 Pork is a symptom... not the cause... The current US political system is based on Parties being able to use the force of law to pick economic winners and losers. The two parties just have different lists of who they want to win, or lose... based on who pays them off the most (with money, and votes). As someone who does not seem to be on EITHER parties Win list.... I see that as a wee bit of a problem.

He's a high-strung little (expletive) so in the 5 years we've shared he's exacted more than that pound of flesh. I don't know if it's me or him. I sat back, as he happily munched on a grape afterward, and thought (it happens! stop laughing!) .... ...ok there was a point to this story about me not sending him to parrot heaven but he's just so bloody cute munching that grape that I lost focus.

You could say the farmers feel like they are entitled to high corn prices.

It's like welfare to prop them up instead of forcing them to find more productive, non-subsidized farming practices.

Nah.

Ag welfare and entitlement spending is like in the Constitution and stuff.
Right next to the "buy off the farmers to keep the food stamp money flowing" clause.

87 A Navy F-18 fighter pilot and former Top Gun instructor is publicly warning admirals that retention is beginning to suffer from the military’s relentless social conditioning programs. Cmdr. Guy Snodgrass, until recently a Pentagon speech writer for the chief of naval operations, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, said sailors are becoming fed-up with the constant emphasis on social issues — an apparent reference to gays in the military, women in combat and ending sexual harassment. “Sailors continue to cite the over-focus on social issues by senior leadership, above and beyond discussions on war fighting — a fact that demoralizes junior and mid-grade officers alike,” Cmdr. Snodgrass wrote this month on the U.S. Naval Institute website, an independent forum for active and retired sailors and Marines. It is a remarkably frank assessment from an upwardly mobile fighter pilot who is due to become the executive officer of a F-18 unit in Japan. FYI

102 Good question, where does she stand on corn subsidies? I'm guessing in favor of them. I'm kind of ready to write off Iowa so we don't have to pander to them anymore. Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 03:48 PM (gmeXX) We grow a share of corn here in MO, but I'd still like to take a match to the Corn subsidies. They distort everything downstream of the market too. Cheap sugar imports from Mexico would probably lower over overall food costs. And honestly, since farming has become more and more automated, kicking corn subsidies to the curb might not even have that big of an effect on overall jobs.

You gotta win the seat to do anything else.

Problem is, getting the seat is so hard, and the seat itself is so valuable, that once you've won it, the next imperative becomes PROTECTING the seat (rather than doing the "anything else" you were thinking about before having it).

Put a little differently, the players may change, but the game remains the same.

Over the last 10 years, it has added up to a Big slice of the spending pie.

But let's ignore and keep on bitching about Entitlement spending, which is politically impossible to cut.

The first night they were home I almost went into a panic when' even hours after the anesthesia should have lost all effect, one of them tried to jump up on my leg to get to my lap and promptly slid back down and landed on the floor. I was immediately thinking some sort of neurological problem. Then my wife took a look at his paws and realized the Vet had thoroughly clipped his nails. Poor little guy didn't know how to climb or land without his claws. Thought it was weird the Vet never mentioned clipping both cats nails, nor was there any record on the receipt.

133 On pork, sure. . .entitlement reform is much more important, but if you can't even manage to cut pork, how are you going to get to entitlements?

Personally, I don't think entitlement reform is even politically possible until we have a Greece-like credit crisis.  Too many voters love the entitlements and we have a political class perpetually engaged in "kick the can", because they constitutionally cannot focus past the very next election cycle, and its politically expedient.

I guess this is a variant of "let it burn", but I don't see a plausible alternative.

181 176 Speaking of castration, you know the Sami people of Scandinavia don't fully castrate their reindeer? Rather they pin down the males they plan to castrate and the women chew their testicles until they've pulverized what's inside. Reindeer castrated in this fashion grow bigger than other males, but they're a lot more docile.

*NBC jingle* The more you know!

188 The people I know supported Bush's effort to alter SS to market-based investments. Moreover, remember that SS was *paid* for by non-FSA. It is *their* money, or what remains of it. "Their" money was spent on checks made out to "their" parents and grandparents. Nearly all of their contributions were spent before they became eligible. So no, it's not *their* money. Entitlement reform is obviously a very touchy issue politically, but it won't be Cowboy Poetry, military spending or foreign aid that bankrupts the country.

We just can't do that with the boomer generation now. That being said, even if we have a chance to have entitlement reform before that we will not be able to do that until we cut pork and foreign aid in a meaningful way because too many voters will reasonably conclude why should I cut my entitlement if we aren't going to cut those. Of course..., but that does not mean that the expectations/claims of retirees are not legitimate, or that they are unreasonable. I'm not judging anyone for claiming SS or Medicare benefits, but the status quo is unsustainable. I object to the characterization that people are owed the money because they "paid in" to the system. They paid a tax that was immediately spent on then-current retirees. They're not seeing their money returned, they're seeing tax dollars from current wage earners being given to them. Is it "fair" that in the near future retirees might not be able to claim the same level of benefits as their parents did? Maybe not, but that's what happens when you rely on the government benefits for your well being.

268 NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A New York City doctor has pleaded guilty in a long-running bribes-for-test referrals scheme involving a northern New Jersey firm. Federal prosecutors say 46-year-old Surender Gorukanti of Brooklyn pleaded guilty Tuesday to accepting bribes. He faces up to five years in prison and will forfeit $14,000, which prosecutors say represents the bribes he got from Parsippany-based Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services. A pediatrician with offices in Staten Island and Brooklyn, Gorukanti got $1,000 per month in return for referring patient blood specimens to BLS. Prosecutors say 25 people — including 14 physicians — have now pleaded guilty in connection with the scheme. They say the lab bribed doctors to refer patients and perform unnecessary tests, which resulted in more than $100 million in payments to BLS from Medicare and various private insurers. 284 That is true. But that is not how the program was sold to the public, nor is it how it is continued to be sold to the public. Also true, but that doesn't mean we should accept and help advance the lies. SS and Medicare are welfare, and people need to be educated to that fact before we can hope to reign in entitlement spending. Means testing would be an excellent start- there's no reason I should be paying for the new RV and Winter vacation home of people wealthier than I simply because they reached a certain age.

286 Also true, but that doesn't mean we should accept and help advance the lies. SS and Medicare are welfare, and people need to be educated to that fact before we can hope to reign in entitlement spending. Means testing would be an excellent start- there's no reason I should be paying for the new RV and Winter vacation home of people wealthier than I simply because they reached a certain age. --- Agree. I used to be against means testing because I think we should all be in it together. The rich "paid in" just as much. But now I am in favor of it. It will make it look and feel more like a welfare program, and I think that will have good consequences in the long run. It will change how people perceive SS/Medicare. More than anything the perception of these programs need to be changed.

Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 12:35 PM (gmeXX)

287 Means testing equals income redistribution. Nice to know you're with Obama on the issue. --- Which is why I was initially against it. But I think if more people understood that that is what the program already is, more people would be against it. I may be wrong. The fallacy is not recognizing that it is already an income redistribution program.

Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 12:39 PM (gmeXX)

288 Many years ago I heard Chris Matthews come out against means testing of SS because it would then be considered a "welfare" program and would lose popularity.

289 SE PA - I don't like the fact that certain groups are going to get screwed in whatever entitlement reform ultimately happens. But I'm confident I will be in a generation that gets screwed. Someone is going to have to pay the price. I am under no fantasy, that I am going to get means tested one way or the other. I have come to the conclusion that entailment reform is only going to happen when the public perception of the program is changed to be more in line with what it actually is - a form of welfare. I think "means testing" gets us there more quickly. I don't see it as helping Obama. If I were a democrat, I wouldn't want to implement means testing at all. There is no upside to them for doing so. Rest assure, I do not wish for you or your children to get screwed - just as I do not wish for my parents, me or my children to get screwed.

Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 12:48 PM (gmeXX)

290 It will change how people perceive SS/Medicare. More than anything the perception of these programs need to be changed. Posted by: SH This. Because the pols still talk about a "lock box" and SS as a "retirement" fund. Bullshit. The problem is that once the Public becomes more truly aware that it is a tax-based ponzi scheme and not a Christmas Club investment they realize there is no fair way to end it or even reform it. Paid the tax all your life? Whoops, we are now cutting it out for people 2 years older than you; sorry, you lose. Means testing? We're retroactively rewriting the original law to begin 60 years ago---you were destined to be wealthier so your tax was fair all along anyway. Rinse repeat. Oh, and all those federal and State pensions? Only SS will get slashed.

Posted by: Daybrother--Not that I'm bitter or anything at March 25, 2014 12:49 PM (Mg/2W)

291 Means testing equals income redistribution. Nice to know you're with Obama on the issue. It already is an income redistribution program, only one that distributes wealth from the poorer to the wealthier. Ideologically I don't believe the federal government should have anything to do with retirement programs, and would see SS and Medicare eliminated completely. I would not ask (or want) a Republican politician to advance that view because it's politically untenable, however. Since we're stuck with these welfare programs (for now), I see no reason they shouldn't be means tested. Would you not object to SNAP being expanded to make everyone eligible for food stamps? After all, it's an income redistribution program...

Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 25, 2014 12:50 PM (SY2Kh)

292 Many years ago I heard Chris Matthews come out against means testing of SS because it would then be considered a "welfare" program and would lose popularity. ---- Exactly. There is no upside to them for doing that. The program remains possible because most of the public operates under the perception that they "paid in" to the program. This is a political lie as you have no right to future benefits.

Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 12:50 PM (gmeXX)

293 It has taken me a long time to come around to the means testing idea because I didn't want it to become more income redistributive than it already was. But I have changed my mind on this and now think it will hasten real reform.

Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 12:53 PM (gmeXX)

294 I don't think conservatives should roll-over on this issue so Obama can take your money and give it to someone who spent their life on the dole. It's not about rolling over to Obama, it's about reducing federal spending on programs that will bankrupt the country if not reformed. Is that no longer a conservative principle?

300 That's what SS needs more then anything. People working. ---- While I disagree with your argument that it is actuarially sound, I agree with your underlying point. Economic growth and putting more people to work are extremely important. I would add that I am more concerned with Medicare spending than SS, though I think they are really just different sides to the same coin.

Posted by: SH at March 25, 2014 01:07 PM (gmeXX)

301 HP - for me it isn't even about "reducing federal spending" per se (at least not immediately). It is about making this unstainable program less popular so that we can reform it. I suspect we are on the same page here. You made a good point and I agree. The ultimate goal is reducing entitlement spending, and means testing is a way to directly and indirectly accomplish that goal.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 25, 2014 01:09 PM (SY2Kh)

302 But the 'sky is falling' argument is false. Oh really? See the following charts and tell me that SS has a fiscally sound future: http://www.cbo.gov/publication/44972

Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 25, 2014 01:15 PM (SY2Kh)

303 Options; 1. Put people back to work 2. Abandon the program or cut benefits and raise retirement age. -------- Agree with point 1, not just for this purpose obviously, but it does help. My preference would be to abandon it, but I recognized that is a non-starter. So how do we reform it. Raising retirement is one way, and I agree that it should be done. But I think it needs meaningful reform. Not tinkering around the edges that just delays the inevitable.

304 The woman is running for a Senate seat in Iowa. Yet the horde thinks she should stand up and proclaim that corn subsidies should be cut, along with all the other USDA subsidies that her state receives. And anyone with two brain cells would know that standing up and saying "I will vote to end corn subsidies" at an Iowa rally would be the kiss of death to their candidacy.
