— Ace No limits.
We knew, previously, that many in Congress considered the fight against the debt-limit hike to be "theater."
Still, a “clean” debt-limit hike — one with no strings attached — has not been ruled out, and Boehner reiterated his desire to avoid a federal default.Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) agreed. “It’s theater,” he said, commenting on the latest flurry of stories about possible GOP plans. “It’s going to end up being clean anyway. I don’t see anything they can put on the table that I would support as some sort of trade-off.”
Settling on a strategy that can win 200-plus GOP votes is Boehner’s chief goal, according to his aides. His whip team will fan out through the House this week to get a better sense of whether members are coalescing around a particular option. Months after the poll-sinking government shutdown and months before the midterm elections, Boehner is looking to keep the Republican drama to a minimum.“Listen, I don’t do the vote counting,” Boehner told reporters when asked about House GOP dynamics. “The goal here is to increase the debt ceiling. Nobody wants to default on our debt. But while we’re doing this, we’ve got to do something” on jobs or the economy.
I remarked last week or the one before that I'm personally not enraged by this. We're getting beaten; we don't have the cards.
There is a bit of "theater," however, in the Republicans votes on this. As AllahPundit notes, the Republicans voting for the debt ceiling hike are either leadership, or blue-state Representatives who have to answer to blue-state constituents, or people who are, conveniently, about to retire.
And I guess I could be mad about that too, but that gets close to being angry to find some politics going on in politics.
I suppose I just think, at this point, there are more important things to be alarmed about.

And I'm going to tell them to go ahead and take a little taste for themselves as well. Taka wheelbarrow load of cash home with them to stuff the mattress. Might as well, while we're being so generous with our grandchildren's money.

Uh, yeah, about that allegedly "poll-sinking" government shutdown:
The Beltway Republicans got rolled, again, on that one. The media once again did their classic Lucy-with-the-football trick. They ran many dozens of polls, and then collectively seized upon the one massive outlier among those polls which showed Republicans being strongly blamed. That outlier was of course a CBS poll with absolutely ridiculous internals and enormous Democratic overrepresentation in the sample.
Did the GOP calmly stick to their guns? No. They panicked and wet their pants in fear, and Boehner folded like a cheap card table.

If just having the better hand is all that mattered, you wouldn't have poker.
Bluff, strategic betting, calculated risk and just plain starring the other guy down can win the pot.
But, you know -- Team Republican.

Why do they even bother waste time talking about raising the debt ceiling? Why don't they just make it a 20 trillion? What's the next number after trillion, jillion? Just go ahead and make it a jillion, no wait a jillion trillion. That should fix the problem, at least for another 10 or 20 years. Then they can raise it again if there's anyone left to do it.
Jesus Flying Christ why do we have to have these jerks ruling over us? The way they create, and throw away money is insane. We all know it can't go on, but incredibly we stand here gape jawed watching it, like a slow motion giant snake eating it's tail.

Really? Really? Going to nail the colors to that mast?
Because what the actual history shows is that in the '96 elections, the GOP lost a grand total of two seats in the House, a whopping eighty-seven one hundredths of one percent of their previous, while still comfortably retaining control.
And the GOP picked up _three_ seats in the Senate at the same time, again retaining control.
Results like that are "being punished by voters"? Shit, it would be great to have more of that level of "punishment" today. Thank you, Mistress, may I have another!
It is true that the GOP was beaten by Bill Clinton in the 1996 Presidential returns. Although perhaps if the GOP had bothered to run a candidate who was actually alive, that too might have worked out better than it is remembered as having done.

The Republican leadership doesn't want to rock the boat prior to the 2014 midterms, when they think they'll regain the Senate. Hence their tactical retreat.
But it's a long way to November 2014.
While it may be theater, I would have at least picked a small fight even if I knew I would still retreat in the end.
1) Demand that Obama act on Keystone, one way or the other. No more having it both ways. Then I'd call bullshit loudly when he say's he's for "all of the above" on energy.
2) Ask again for an across-the-board legislated delay in ObamaCare. Then point out the bullshit in this being called an outrageous demand last time around given that Obama has since been putting in delays piecemeal and illegally.
Obama's response will be to once again say that on the debt ceiling he won't negotiate with terrorists. Even if the Republicans then folded Obama would be made to look like a foolish intemperate asshole. This matters in getting out swing moderate voters.
The Republicans just can't sit on their hands until November.

We're not in crisis, and it's time republican's understand that spending will never create a debt crisis because Janet Yellen will simply print more money until the shortfall is eliminated.
Republican's have no basic knowledge of economics or they would have endorsed unlimited spending. It was not until President Obama explained it in simplistic terms did they finally acquiesce and agree with the president that unlimited spending isn't harmful, and there is indeed an unlimited supply of money. Money is everywhere, and it does grow on Janet Yellen's tree.

We have to keep printing money so that the plebes can buy stuff from other countries so they can have money to re-lend back to us so we can buy more of their slave made stuff so they can have more money to lend to us so we can buy more of their stuff. In return they keep the interest low on our money that they lent us. This circular motion can last forever.

We've already passed a point of no return on the budget and the deficit. The numbers are just too far out of whack. Am I wrong?
So long as the Fed has us on a QE morphine drip, the general consensus of Americans is to accept our new sucky normal. But the new sucky normal is fiscally unsustainable.
So what next?
Obama is a smart guy but he has serious gaps in his understanding of how finance works. It's like physics for poets -- no numbers on the exam.
So I can't figure out whether (A) he thinks creating a new regime of entitlements for those making less than $50,000 is a way to achieve reparations for slavery and hence social justice, or (B) he wants a Cloward-Piven end game. If he thinks it's both, then he's likely to be sadly mistaken as his core constituents will likely be hurt the most by Cloward-Piven.
This is the politics of New York City during the 1970s writ large, but with the complication of the Fed printing press running full speed.

First, isn't politics, and being good at it, supposed to be the job of the Speaker? Well, he gets a solid "F"
Second, why is Ted Cruz so popular? (rhetorical question)
Third, the priority, as it exists today, in the House, is NOT the well being of our republic but the well being of the current office holders' careers. This is morally despicable.
Fourth, the rebumblicans control 1/3 of the govt, but it's the part that holds the purse strings. Leverage that, duh.

Unresponsive. You're expecting Boehner to pull a miracle not be a good politician.
**** No. I'm expecting him to be a good politician and he's done exactly zero. Nada. Nothing except cave.
>>Second, why is Ted Cruz so popular? (rhetorical question)
News flash. He is only popular with a portion of the country. He is also widely mocked and disliked. And his filibuster not only didn't accomplish anything positive, it hurt Republicans.
**** aside from your snark, he's wildly popular. Where the fuck do you live?
>>Third, the priority, as it exists today, in the House, is NOT the well being of our republic but the well being of the current office holders' careers. This is morally despicable.
Wut? Just ranting the same thing over and over again without giving any idea of how they should accomplish what you want doesn't mean anything. I'll keep asking until you answer, how do you expect them to get Reid and Obama to move on Republican issues? They House has voted to repeal Obamacare over 40 times. Reid won't touch it and Obama won't sign it. Now what?
***** Want the idea? Defund. I know the house has pushed repeal after repeal that will not come to vote in the senate. Fully aware of that. So. Time for 41. 42. 43. 44. 45. Make those democrats vote. Crush the house dems. Are you even paying attention?
>>Fourth, the rebumblicans control 1/3 of the govt, but it's the part that holds the purse strings. Leverage that, duh.
See Cruz, filibuster. Boehner made that possible. And?
**** nothing to respond to here... you're just wandering.
>>Need I go on?
You don't need to but you can if you'd like.

Anyone else remember how Boehner was promised by Obama that Obama was ready to give him one for one spending cuts in exchange for tax hikes?
And how Boehner then went up to the White House, and put a couple of hundred billion dollars in tax hike proposals on the table, and said, "What do I get for that?"
And how Obama smirked at him and said, "You get nothing. I get that for free."
It should really tell you something that:
(a) Boehner did not simply just excuse himself and leave at that point, and
(b) That the GOP did not instantly sack and replace Boehner once they became aware of how badly he had been taken to the cleaners in the "negotiations" with Obama.

Boehner needs to go. The Left likes him more than the Tea Party. Because he doesn't fight back.

The one that galls me most is the IRS deal. The dems were running scared--Obama was on TV denouncing the IRS for fuck's sake--and instead of striking while the donks were reeling and collecting some scalps, well, Issa will hold some hearings and get to the bottom of it. A year later and Obama is out smiling about there not being a smidgen of corruption at the IRS.

Imagine being in our nation’s capital, surrounded by thousands of likeminded conservatives, watching your favorite conservative leaders speak— like Senator Ted Cruz, Senator Marco Rubio, Governor Bobby Jindal and Congressman Paul Ryan.
The Republican National Committee wants to make that a reality.
The RNC is flying one lucky winner to Washington, D.C., to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference from March 6-8.
Yeah, it's a $6 lottery ticket and if I win (which I won't - the drawing will be rigged) I get to watch Rubio and Ryan speak. I won't, of course, get to make them listen, which is the actual job of an elected representative.

Ace wrote, "As AllahPundit notes, the Republicans voting for the debt ceiling hike are either leadership, or blue-state Representatives who have to answer to blue-state constituents, or people who are, conveniently, about to retire."
Leadership, right. Leadership in the way Quisling was a leader, the way Petain was a leader: men quailing in fear and awe at the strength of their enemies, accepting defeat as inevitable and accommodation as the only viable solution.
True enough, the American Left is galvanized and formidable, in control of the media and the universities and the federal government and--now--over one-sixth of the US economy, and those gutless, unprincipled Country Club Republican bastards are seeking an accommodation.
Forget party unity for the sake of a midterm election victory. What kind of victory will it be if we get nothing but more Quisling-like Boehners and Petain-like McConnells in the House and Senate? Instead, we should focus on either forcing the GOP to assume its proper role as an opposition party or focus on splitting off and forming a new party, one with the word 'freedom' in its name somewhere.
In the end, that's what this is about. Either we continue as a free people or we become de facto serfs in an authoritarian socialist superstate. There is no middle ground. There can be no accommodation with these people.

Horse Shit
the HoR controls the purse. don't pass a limit, don't pass anything but a budget.
if that asshole in the Oval Orfice and Harry Reid want to shut down the government, let them.
don't do a damn thing until they break, even if the country is in flames. fuck them, because they want to destroy us anyway.
let the motherfucker burn, just make sure everything burns, not just who the left wants to get rid of. make their base pay a price, and maybe the ones that survive might wake the hell up.

I boxed amateur when I was young. 'He'll get tired eventually' was a happy thought on those occasions when I was getting pounded. Happy thoughts have little effect on outcome.

No, it wasn't a dumb strategy in the larger sense that we are in an argument over big ideas. We must stay IN the fight, even though at times nothing much seems accomplished. Our arguments in defense of basic principles are sound, reasonable, and achievable. The current president's programs have been specious, slipshod, harmful to our constitutional government, and abject failures. The current administration feels the ground shifting beneath their feet and they don't like it one bit. If they can't win the argument, they'll go gunning for the messengers. That won't work, either.

While he was lying on the operating table, Ronald Reagan cracked jokes with the surgeons frantically trying to save his life. There's nothing wrong with having happy thoughts if one is committed to the good fight.

First, the R's control the house. Second, when playing defense there are good ways to play and bad ways. For the former, see Fabius Maximus; for the latter see John Boehner.

He's not OK with it. He's resigned to the Leadership making the best worst-choice.
No one is denying that the leadership sucks, but some of us are sick to death of True Conservatives who are deeply deluded about the reality of American politics.

The reality is that these Marxist weasels will succeed in their goal if Republican leaders keep thinking they're dealing with traditional Democrats and not hardcore, old-school ideologues. These soft Country Club Republican types are the Whigs of 1852, waiting for the pendulum to swing back around (which it won't) and intent upon maintaining a status quo that no longer exists. President Obama said he would transform the country, and he is. Who's there to stop him? It sure as hell isn't current GOP leadership.

Giving the Ocrats more money to make an even bigger mess of things only serves to provide the LOSERship with more crony campaign bucks to first fight the Tea Party, and then perhaps take out a few Ocrats.
Whether their effort is enough to take over the Senate may not be a priority or even a goal. The Mudfarmer GOP LOSERship goal is pretty much totally focused upon helping crony donor, the rest of the nation can suck on rocks... Being in an actual leadership position may be contrary to the GOPs leaderships standard operating procedure -- as Boehner's actions exhibits so well.
