Standing Up to the Bullies: The University of Texas Quits The American Studis Association Over The Latter's Israel Boycott
— Ace

This is something I keep talking about of late. An organization with an agenda (usually leftist) demands a firing -- in this case, the American Studies Association demanded a firing of Israel. The firing would take the form of an academic boycott of the beleaguered nation, which would mean that universities joining the boycott would sever programatic ties with Israel and Israeli universities.

Over 100 universities and academic organizations have rejected the ban.

And five universities have taken even firmer action against the "American" Studies Association's drive to limit free speech and free exchange of ideas -- they've severed institutional ties with the ASA completely.

The University of Texas honors itself by becoming the sixth to do so.

I am hopeful for more backlash against this odious, unamerican practice. It has become the standard move to give in to a bully when the bully issues a list of demands. It is easier for a university -- or a corporation, as we've seen lately -- to just give in to the bully.

Squeaky wheels get grease, after all.

But what if Squeaky Wheels stopped getting so much grease? What if they instead got a swift kick to the axel and were told they'd better stop squeaking so shrilly or they'd be rubbished?

It's about time we all started standing up this sort of faux-intellectual brigandry. It's time to tell the baying mobs, ever out for blood, to STFU, keep a civil tongue, and make us all a nice sandwich in apology for their past sins.

Time and again, we've seen taking a strong stand works. It's amazing how so many still give in to fear.* *some of that fear is for their family. Their safety and being able to take care of them financially. But, it has to stop somewhere.

20 We are experiencing one of those bully things here right now. A catholic high school dismissed its vice principal after he revealed he married his partner. Now another gay person who sometimes works for the school is worried because she is engaged to her partner. The students are riled up and protesting, the gay community is up in arms and it has become a "thing." essentially everyone is trying to bully the Catholic school to change its employment stance but if that doesn't work they want to shut the school down for being intolerant.

Slightly OT..... but I get a kick of the anti bullying ads on the tube.

What they DONT show is what to do after Spike the Bully flattens your nose for butting in and Mom has to come pick you up because the school has a zero tolerance policy for fighting.... despite the fact you were only "bleeding" and not really "fighting".

But those writers didnt really think their scenario all the way through, did they.

25 As someone in academics exile from academics. I'm tired of the whole "consensus statements!" and "Resolutions" by various groups. FFS, if they truly believe what they say we're not an advocacy group, we're disciplines and fields that should encourage robust debate. Instead we've got resolutions that Obamacare is good or that Israel is bad. It's stupid as shit. More places should have the balls to stand up say "Not just no, FUCK NO." But as noted, academia is like a cartel, and these groups often control the allotment of goods (which in this case is publications and grants and occasionally jobs.) Sad Sad world.

26 It is easier for a university -- or a corporation, as we've seen lately -- to just give in to the bully. As with so many ills, the Left is to blame for this one, too. I wasn't alive at the time, but I know there was once a day when the schoolyard bully Got His if he stepped over a line- usually by some other kid. But then came "zero tolerance" and "it takes two to fight" and other such BS. And then the ONLY thing you could do was give in to the bully- because you knew he'd beat the snot out of you, and you'd get in trouble if you defended yourself. Given your relative positions, this was a much bigger sacrifice for you. Now our institutions are inundated with two messages- 1- when a bully comes around, just give him your lunch money. 2- better to be the bully. As a direct consequence, we also have now where "bullying" has graduated to "aggravated assault" and now people are wringing their hands over "how could this possibly happen?"

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at January 07, 2014 12:14 PM (PYAXX)

27 Per ace's earlier comment regarding how the modern institutional left are never actually open and honest about what it is that they believe and practice, the "American Studies Association" should be far more accurately yclept the "Anti-American Studies Association".

It's great to see this particular little nest of them be taken down, but the left have embedded themselves like ticks all throughout higher education. The long march through the institutions, and all that.

It's going to take long hard years of activism and vigilance just to contain them, and keep the problem from getting any worse, much less rolling it back on any meaningful scale.

As mentioned at LI's link, most universities are leaving it up to their individual American Studies departments to decide whether or not to terminate their membership.  So while there are probably faculty members who are unhappy with the decision, at the    very least it was    probably   a decision made locally   and not imposed by some faceless administration.

The vice principle has made the situation what it is, after all he knew he was working for a Catholic institution. The fact is, he was very good at his job and should have no problem finding a similar position and probably would be paid better at a public school where his marital status would not be an issue.

Some surprising institutions on that list rejecting the boycott. Like most of the Ivy League, who I would have expected to stay silent, not endorsing the boycott but not being willing to publicly support Israel.

I'm disheartened to find that while the UC system and 7 of 10 campuses signed on to rejecting the boycott, my own school at UCSB hasn't weighed in. Hopefully they were too stoned to know there's a boycott in the first place. Hell, even UC Irvine came out against it, and they've had serious and very real problems with antisemitism.

I don't like this stuff they have here." CW3 friend told him to suck it
up and stop being a pussy. Son asked his grandmother for the same, and
she sent it. He got to keep and use it. He also had sent to him: burned

allowed candy, but they can have cough drops. Did he write letters to
request this stuff? Nope. Text messages and Facebook posts.

Years and years ago I had a kid step off the bus.  Mikey Nunez.  I remember the names of maybe 5 of the 2500 troops I pushed Mike is one of them.

LA gangbanger, attitude for a mile.

So it's day 2 of training.  Texas. 100 degrees and 95% humidity.  I'm teaching these kids how to walk (i.e. drill).  Mike decides the best plan is to tell me to go F myself.

Now, as an NCO, and a seasoned DI, you pause when things like this occur.

Normally I don't take up an officer's time with silliness, but I walked Mike into the command section, while laughing.  I sat him down and asked him how he was going to explain to his mother that he was too stupid to make it through 48 hours of basic training.  Briefed the CC and left.

FF to graduation.  Nunez is my best squad leader.  He's applied to be a forward air controller or pararescue (similar selection process, at the time).  Back to the commander because he needs a blood waiver due to an iron deficiency.  The *one* and only time I went out of my way to assist a trainee.

A day 3 troop was sitting next to Nunez when I sat him down to wait for the commander to sign the waiver.  Day 3 troop did something stupid, don't remember exactly what, but I corrected him (read that as you will).  Evidently, when I walked away, Day 3 troop gave me the finger.  Nunez beat his ass on the spot.

I didn't find out about this until he was in PJ school making staples (if you don't get the reference, that's ok).

Don't know what became of him.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at January 07, 2014 12:29 PM (SY2Kh)

104 So a couple of things: The American Studies Association is a typical academic society. Individual dues are up to $125/yr depending on salary but for most working profs, that's the amount. But the "institutional membership" is $170/yr. That's it! "Membership includes subscriptions to American Quarterly, the Encyclopedia of American Studies Online, and to the ASA E-Newsletter (quarterly publication). Membership also includes discounts on association services and publications." University Libraries are loathe to reject a publication and $170/yr is chump change. Departments have more in their budget for coffee filters than this. So with these professional organizations, it's easy to (1) convince the librarian that it's a better deal to pay the $170 than subscribe to any one of those publications (2) convince the department chair to part with a few bucks for "institutional membership" or (3) just pay the $170 out of your own pocket. Until recently, the ASA looked like a perfectly responsible professional organization so if you, as a prof, offered to pay the institutional membership out of your own pocket, who would object?

How is Israel a beleaguered nation?

beleaguered  - to lay seige to,  to harass

Having rockets shot into your country frequently by terrorists,  having to build a wall to keep out homicide bombers,  having to defend yourself against surrounding countries that have declared that you should be pushed into the sea.

I think that pretty much covers the definition of beleaguered.

I could see where a university might have a program that's a little bit rogue they tell to shove it, they aren't joining (or staying with) this group. Especially because this boycott affects more than just American Studies Departments (especially if you have a Theology Department for example.) So the University may want to send a message on behalf of non American Studies departments. On the flip side, I recognize not all things are ideal. After all I come from a university where the former president made Obama look like a constrained executive.

192 Doesn't seem to fit in too well with the theory of evolution. Posted by: WalrusRex at January 07, 2014 04:37 PM (Hx5uv) Darwin hates gays. Seriously, the persistence of chunks of the population uninterested in breeding tends to put a damper on the whole theory of evolution. I have to wonder what gays think when they hear things like, "Men evolved to prefer boobies," etc. Actually it does, if you assume that heterosexual sex is aberrant behavior (PIV is rape) that is favored genetically because of the distortions of the violence inherent in heterosexuality. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at January 07, 2014 04:41 PM (QFxY5) I only know what I see on the Internet, but it seems to me that lesbian sex will involve quite a lot of the same sort of "violence", except with hand-held devices of varying technological sophistication.
