Stephen Colbert Appears On Letterman Promising To Continue Doing the Same Show Letterman Did, Awkward and Unfunny
— Ace

Yeah, guys, I dunno.

Is there any way we can get him to do a new "character" where he plays someone who's comfortable on camera and occasionally funny?

By the way, I can't help but see the Corporate Messaging Strategy here. Colbert talks a lot about his family (and Dave obligingly asks about it), which is probably all with the design of "humanizing" the new expensive hire and making him palatable to viewers.

At 10:10, he reads the top ten list he and his writing partner submitted when they applied to be writers on the show 17 years ago.

Yeah, it's not good. When he realizes it's bombing, he says "17 years ago," to remind people it's dated comedy, as if America has made quantum leaps since then in the technology of the Top Ten List.

43 Guarantee he'll be back in his phoney baloney "conservative" caricature within a month.

He won't be able to resist.

He's unable to resist a cheap shot. Never has, never will.

When his ratings tank, he'll go back to his old ways. Which will tank the ratings further.

There's a reason why he was on AFTER Letterman; cause he's a niche comedian.

A one trick pony that only appeals to lefty's on the coasts.

Mom and Pop in flyover country are either going to go "whut?" or "This is terrible" when they see the real Colbert.

I'm glad cause maybe this will wash him off the stage and we won't have to see his lame nasty interpretations of what a liberal thinks a conservative thinks or does ever again.

Like Hollywood with their fake phony stories about actual events that somehow always reflect badly on the heroes and good on the villains or turn the entire point upside down.

They're trying to rewrite history in people's minds instead of actually doing something they write fiction and hope it's seen as fact by the uninformed who weren't alive then or don't remember.

103 I think you have that backwards. I think it was Chevy Chase talking about Colbert. Posted by: Furious George at April 23, 2014 05:56 PM (yFb77) Nope. Definitely Colbert roasting Chevy, at least the one I'm remembering. Colbert was pounding the podium for emphasis and Chevy had a pissed-off look on his face with a fake-assed smile to try to avoid looking like a dick (didn't work). They might have done a reversal thing on a later roast though, which could have actually been a funny in-joke if Chevy used the exact words that Colbert had used before.

107 Marginally OT: watch the clip of Roy Clark playing Malaguena on last night's ONT.  I remember the first time I saw him play that, and it was a revelation.  Not only was he not just some no-talent hillbilly, you could see the concentration on his face, the sheer effort it took to play something so hard so well.  It may also have been my first realization that doing something really well requires effort, and lots of it.

This was the tail end of the 60s, when whipping your dong out on stage was considered talent.  Not that Hendrix wasn't talented.

159 the funniest joke I ever heard on Johnny Carson was Ed talking about wine and wine connoisseurs.

The funniest thing I heard on Carson was an old guy, I can't remember his name but he was truly ancient, who told a joke.

Man walks up to a kid fishing by the river.  The kid has a million fish, while the man has caught dick.  Man asks the kid for his secret.  The kid replies "mff mfffff mfff".  Man says "sorry, I didn't catch that".  Kid says "mff mffff mff".  Man says "I'm sorry, I just can't understand you".  Kid looks disgusted, spits something into his hand, and says "keep your worms war".

Carson asks the old man if that was a joke from the old days.  Old man say, "nope, heard it last week".  Carson is prone on his desk.

160 I began watching Carson in my late teens. I thought he was too old for my tastes so I hadn't really given him a shot then, one night, I tuned in. He was making fun of a horrendous jacket worn by Doc Severinsen. The jacket was some sort of gaudy reddish/purplish velvet number and Carson said something about it looking like upholstery. The next night the stage crew had upholstered part of the set in it. The next night, a bigger part of the stage. It became a running gag until early the entire stage was covered in it. I was hooked. And, regardless of what/who Carson may have been off the stage, on the stage, he was a pro. I can respect that.

191 The fact that liberals have to inject their politics into comedy wouldn't be so bad providing they were actually funny. 270 here's the thing they are working to turn the US into the 1990s UK where "newcomers" knocked the Tories from conservatism FOREVER and power for a long long time. I think the UK had it better. A lot of their migration comes from the Commonwealth, where there is some respect for British culture. Not so with the Muslims, of course. We're explicitly bringing in people who resent our country and think it owes them.

271 Chicago Sun Times readers were stunned last week to find that writer Neil Steinberg has penned a column comparing black supporters of Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner to Jews who collaborated with the Nazis against their brethren. Did he use George Soros as a primary source?

285 Bertram, If you listen to Mark Levin Dr K & George Will were both on the wrong side of Reagan running. Dr. K worked for Mondale & Will wanted someone else to be GOP nominee, I don't remember who Will wanted. That damn rock has been there for years. Does rock belong to Perry family?

286 217 Many years ago, CNBC had Tom Snyder on at night. He was...a bit wacky, but entertaining. Then Charles Grodin, who is like a human tranquilizer, took over the show. And he ran it into the ground. ------ Snyder rocked. The smoking was awesome. Dan Akyrod had him pegged down perfectly. There I said it

290 Lame and boring

291 Im not a fan of Colbert, his shtick is lazy and tired, but he has a spark of creativity in there. I think he even started out on the Colbert Report kind of funny. He did this bit "better know a district" were he interviewed unknown but legitimate Congress persons and asked them ridiculous but not cheap questions. It was actually much braver and thoughtful than the liberal red meat du jour, he is serving up now. Sometimes i wonder if he really just saw the writing on the wall, and the Jon Stewart lead in and decided success (or having a job) was more important than integrity or actual comedy. He might have had genuine talent but trashed it and gave in to the easy path.... then again it got him exactly what he is getting. Favor from the leftest entertainment industry and a booming career that includes "The Late Show"....the pinnacle for his career path. I actually thought his Top Ten List was better than Letterman's average offering. Colbert will be just another stale liberal knee pad wearer on late night TV doing his current act, which will make it difficult for him to stand out. He wont have Jon Stewart Pied Piper-ing an audience for him, either. That begs the question......will Colbert be content with pushing liberal politics if it means failure at his job? Will he change to chase success like he did with the Colbert Report or is he just another hack unable to see past his progressive prejudices even as they drag him off a cliff? Of all the late night hosts on now and then including Colbert, if any of them was going to be a gigantic surprise somehow....i think it would be Colbert. That said.... Craig Ferguson got screwed and is infinitely more fun to watch than anyone doing that format. I always enjoy his show when i catch it. I hope he kicks all their butts.

293 I cannot imagine any conservative at all being interested in tuning in after being inanely lampooned idiotically for a decade. His schtick was old after one week. Yet his dummkopf viewers continued to eat it up. He is for them. Without his character that appealed to them he's nothing. I do hope for a spectacular fail.

294 I haven't seen this much buzz and hype about a product America had no particular desire for since Jeb Bush announced he's really thinking about running for President. Steven gonna be a big, stifling bore (okay, okay, he's already there). The ratings will be horrible and CBS will act like he's the second coming of Johnny Carson. Business as usual.

296 I'm so old that I remember the MORNING show Letterman had. Which was frickin' fabulous - I'll never forget the wedding anniversary they threw for a couple married 60 or 70 years and the confetti in the background caught fire and they just kept filming. Yes, kiddies, once upon a time Dave was young and funny.
