Stuff I Didn't Get To Today Open Thread
— Ace

Need a little time off before the podcast. Here are some quick links.

Author Brad Thor speculates about his own personal Flight 370 nightmare scenario.

CBS's Marketwatch analyst is starting to get a little suspicious about this "economic recovery."

Liberal Richard Cohen rips out-of-control progressives for opposing charter schools at the expense of poor children-- while pretending that by punishing poor children, they're striking a blow against The One Percent.

The Democratic Party, which runs on Mediscare most elections, is firmly behind Obama's serious, deep cuts to home health care providers and hostels for the elderly. When you're paying them so much less, you can expect a lot less in return -- and many will simply go out of business.

This Cracked article by a real-life Top Gun on the Five Things You Don't Know About Piloting a Jet Fighter is pretty awesome.

I know you're going to call me a damned liar, but Tom Friedman has written something stupid about Sustainable Energy Serious You Guys.

Oh, and Former Enron Consultant Paul Krugman asserts that he knows the Tea Party is racist. How does he know this? Simple, really: While the Tea Party opposes wealth transfers to "Those People" (he actually says "Those People"), the Tea Party, he sagely informs you, has never complained about the government's TARP bailouts of banks.

Never! Not once! Never happened!

I've been trying to think of something clever to say about this Christina Hoff Summers article on the increasing tendency to treat masculinity as a disease, but I can't, so I'll just recommend it.

Slate must really need hits, because they've offered up their most controversial #TrollOutrage article yet: College Isn't For Everyone, So Let's Stop Pretending It Is.

Oh, and healthcare premiums will skyrocket under Obamacare. But you knew that.

The Meatball continues his Meatballish ways by appearing on Amy & Gay Patriot's The Wrap show at 9pm tonight.

For something cute/funny/sorta alarming, Dave in Texas sends this video of a kid who may be a Wile E. Coyote type genius when it comes to removing a loose tooth.

Which isn't a good way to be a genius. But still, a sort of genius.

Okay, to enjoy this video, put it outside of your mind, for a moment, that maybe this dad should take more ownership of this situation.

And don't worry: Nothing bad happens. Even Wile E. Coyote gets lucky every once in a while.

Notice how the US and Australia are searching a "texas-sized" search area in the Indian Ocean west of Australia?  Very quietly, very systematically.  None of the Malaysian Clown Car histrionics and B.S.  Boring, low key.

Guess where the plane probably is?  IMO the odds are 70-30 it will be in that area; and 20% it will not be found in the next 6 months, if ever.  10% to all the other possibilities.  Is Vegas accepting bets?

They had Hitchens every week.  And Dahlia Lithwick did the best SCOTUS coverage ever.  She's a raging liberal but she couldn't get over how clever Scalia is.

Anyway, they've thrown in the towel.  They have literally stopped trying.  The last Lithwick piece I read was, seriously, "What happens when a woman wears men's Axe body spray for a week".

And contrary to the Libs' talking points, it started on CNBC with Rick Santelli on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

That it was.  But it was a reaction to TARP and Stimulus and All of It.  I was arguing with someone on FB that it was just a rayciss thing because the Tea Party started under Obama.  Santelli's rant was in Feb 2009, Obama was barely president.  The response to the rant was from people who were sick of All of It.

Bush's last six months were as bad as Obama.  Oh, it's an emergency now, so we have to nationalize banks or some shit.  (Name dropping: Santelli's sparring partner in the next days is an actual friend of mine who just happens to be wrong).

290 68 Cant recall where it was from but yesterday or Monday Rush was quoting some excerpts from some Krugman/Friedman school thinker column that "food prices are going rise steeply and that is a good thing because this nation is obese and being forced to cut calorie intake will make us healthier" Posted by: PaleRider at March 19, 2014 07:49 PM And anyone who believes that is completely clueless as to why low income people, like those on food welfare, are overweight. The healthy food, meat and produce, is the most expensive. Unhealthy food is cheap. You can get a whole loaf of white bread at some stores for one dollar or cheaper. You can get a package of Bologne for about a dollar or 2. Lord knows what "meat" is in it. Off brand soda, $1 for a 2 liter bottle. Cheapo pastries (Not Hostess) $1.50, sometimes $1. Cheapo cookies ! or 2 dollars. When meat and produce goes up, low income people will be eating even more crap.

292 163 When everyone has a college degree, nobody has a college degree. Which is why a master's today is the equivalent of a college degree 30 years ago. And in another 30 years a PhD will be the equivalent of a Master's today. Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at March 19, 2014 08:23 PM (0LHZx) And then there's grade inflation, and the dumbing down of high school to the point where colleges have to spend a lot of time on remedial courses. One of the worst things that has happened in our society is how young people have been told that they must get a college degree in order to amount to anything, even if they have to go heavily into debt to do it. Not everybody is suited for college, and there is nothing wrong with that. There is tons of demand for skilled trades such as mechanics, electricians, welders, and plumbers. Hell, our society needs those people. And it's possible to make a very nice living working at those trades. Even a roofer is probably better off than someone who goes heavily into debt to get a Women's Studies degree. I never finished college and I work in a printing shop. I don't make a lot of money, but I'm doing all right. I'm pretty frugal by nature and don't live beyond my means. I'm lucky that my employer is a very savvy businessman and has been able to survive and adapt while lots of other printers have gone under due to the effects of changing technology.

That was less than a month after the coronation of Barack the Healer that Rick made the speech, on live television. At that point, Obama was riding in the midish 70's in approval at the time, and this was a shock to a lot of people that not everyone was on board with his spending plans. From this point, every one of those spending bills has been hung around the Dems necks. The opposition to TARP1 was kind of disjointed because it was made up of the LIB's and the Burn It Down/MOAR GOVT factions, neither really wanting it because of too much government. Later when the other spending bills came up did the opposition begin to gel.

CAC posted some stuff at Federalist.  Ace linked to it, but was a little peeved that the good stuff was being posted elsewhere, so he started calling him meatball.

Today, Gabe contributed heavily to a Hot Air analysis, so meatballing became a thing.  It has an acronym, MLBS, but I'm drinking and I'm not going to look it up.

"The healthy food, meat and produce, is the most expensive. Unhealthy food is cheap. You can get a whole loaf of white bread at some stores for one dollar or cheaper. You can get a package of Bologne for about a dollar or 2. "

nerdygirl, I hear that all the time, but I question if price is really the issue. A bunch of broccoli - or a bag of frozen broccoli - is not that expensive. Chicken prices are rising, but it's still affordable. How about manwich sandwiches made with ground turkey on whole wheat buns? Canned tuna is cheap. Beans are cheap. I've managed to eat pretty healthy at times when I was on a very tight budget and I didn't have food stamps to tide me over.

The problem isn't price - it's convenience. Healthy foods have to be prepared and cooked, and the cheaper they are, the less convenient they are - a bag of cut up cauliflower costs more than a whole one. A lot of poor people no longer know how to cook or don't want to take the time to even cook frozen broccoli or roast a chicken. It's easier to just slap some baloney between a couple of slices of white bread or eat potato chips and ice cream or go to McDonalds.

And they could afford higher priced meat occasionally if they didn't buy so much junk. I don't think it's because they don't know what's good for them - they don't need Michele to tell them apples are better for them than Doritos. And if they're on food stamps - well, heck, why not buy the chocolate chip cookies if someone is picking up the tab?

My husband works weird hours and travels a lot for work. I don't have trouble cooking for him and the rest of the family when he's in town, even if he gets home at 11 at night. I just cook something for me and the kids, and he gets things heated up. However, there's a weird mental block I have about cooking when he's out of town. Those days I'm far more likely to order a pizza. Why? I have no idea, but I'm going to blame obesity on single mothers now to help me feel better about my own failure in this area.

The mapmakers usually use red for this type of message. I think this is one Red Line Obami can back.

462 BTW, zombie, if it isn't too personal: Does your Maoist family know you're now working for The Dark Side? If it's secret, I can't help wondering how you explain that income. "I'm a writer." "Well, what do you write about? I'd like to read your articles..." "Well, I have the lead article in 'Farming Technology' this month. And I'm working on really a fascinating one called '21st century advances in cardboard production.' I'll send you the link." "Uh, really, that's OK. I don't wanta keel over from too much excitement." Posted by: Donna and V. (no ampersand) You are the very first person to ever, unprompted, identify the #1 problem in my life. Very perceptive! Well, you were very close. It's not that I have to explain what I write about and how much I earn, but rather, I have to account for all that missing time. I write enough non-political other stuff to point to it and say, "This is what I do." But what I find endlessly difficult is accounting for all those endless hours that in reality I spend reporting on, researching , editing and writing political essays, the very existence of which is unknown to every single one of my family and friends. I put a lot more work into my blogging stuff that might appear on the surface. Hours, days, weeks, sometimes, spent on my political reportage and punditry. What do I claim to my leftist loved ones that I'm doing during all that time??? That is my constant dilemma. My general solution has been two-fold: One, pretend to take much much longer to write my other non-political stuff than I actually do. So in reality I'll whip out some dumb thing about widgets, and spend maybe three hours on it -- but I won't tell anyone that I'm finished. Instead, I'll whine and complain that I'm slaving away on this stupid widget project for days and days, when in fact I finished it days ago and instead I'm secretly slaving away on some essay proving the president is a communist. When I'm done with the political essay, I'll announce, "Whew! Finally finished this damn widget report!" If anybody I knew ever bothered to read my non-political stuff, they might wonder to themselves, "Gee, you spent two days writing this lame little thing? YOU ARE LAME." ANd maybe they do think that. But that's the price I must pay for being able to buy time to work in secret. The second technique is that I pretend to be addicted to various online time-wasters that in fact I don't spend one second on. "Mommy's busy obsessively losing all our money in this online casino! Make your own dinner!" Stuff like that. I'm the only person in the history of the Internet who clicks the casino gambling screen ON to hide the fact that I'm doing work! (As for the finances side of it: I do the taxes, so I can easily "disguise" the income s being from generic-seeming payers, since no one looks at the numbers but me anyway.) So I have to pretend to be an untalented addict, in order to hide my true behavior. Life can be rough, I tells ya.

Posted by: thunderb at March 19, 2014 06:51 PM (zOTsN)

527 I have a sneaking feeling that Rand Paul has more steel in his spine than maybe any other potential Republican Presidential candidate. Paul presents the Democrat-Media Complex with an extremely difficult target--he can for instance credibly counterattack with things like "So you SUPPORT spying on Americans?" And, from what I've seen, he's actually smart enough to engage in exactly that kind of relatively non-sequitur counter-attack that's necessary to affect LIV opinion. That said, I would be more comfortable if, say, a 2016 ticket of something like Paul/Bolton (i.e. balancing Paul's rather traditional pre-Progressive Republican isolationist position with a sound 21st-Century-world realpolitik vision) would somehow, miraculously, materialize.
