Ummm… ok. The “Laptop Snood Hood.”

Good day, traveling morons! Time for another thread to chat about travel and leisure.

April may be the cruelest month, but there’s little doubt that for those of us in colder climes, February is a close second. Holidays are behind us, football is long over, it’s really too cold to do much in our yards, and the kids are still in school so the parents among us are not going much of anywhere any time soon. As an added joy, the warm days that we DO get usually result in snow melt and the invariable “mud season.” (I’ve completely given up on keeping my floors clean thanks to the pitter-patter of eight collie feet!)

So today I thought IÂ’d cover some leisure activities that we CAN do during these slow months at the end of winter and beginning of Spring. This will be short because, frankly, itÂ’s a beautiful sunny day here at the Wasatch Front, so the mister and I are headed out for a drive in a little while.
Around these parts one of the big things to do is “Spring Skiing.” I myself am not a skier. I’ve downhill skied twice – the FIRST time and the LAST time. That said, I have been to quite a few ski towns thanks to going to college in the Northeast and various conferences and trips while I was doing the Science Thing. I like them as they tend to attract good restaurants, fun shops, and are absolutely gorgeous in the warmer months if you like nature, hiking and the like.

Courtesy of LuxurySkiTrips.com, hereÂ’s a list of top Western ski resorts for Spring skiing. Their list is based on the quality of snow at this time of year, rather than on the the other amenities offered. IÂ’ve been to both Alta and Snowbird (as well as Whistler), but for my sort of non-ski activities IÂ’d still prefer Park City, Utah and Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

For our one-percenter morons and moronettes, the world is your oyster (lucky devils!). Courtesy of SkyScanner.net, here are the places they say are the ten best for late season skiing, world-wide. Most of their choices are located in Europe, but two North American destinations make their list, Mammoth in California and Whistler-Blackcomb in Canada. I've been to Whistler in the Fall and it sure is gorgeous. It's also near one of my favorite cities anywhere, Vancouver, B.C.

whistler-xmas-wallpaper.jpeg

Whistler, B.C., at Christmastime

None of the Northeastern U.S. resorts made these lists, but I assume thereÂ’s still some skiing possible in your neck of the woods. The Ski Guru Blog at the Boston Globe can help you keep apprised of the best skiing in New England.

HowÂ’s the skiing at these places? Which do you like the best?

Another fun thing to do at this time of year is heading down to New Orleans, where Mardi Gras is a couple of weeks away. Carnival season kicked off last month on KingÂ’s Day (the Feast of the Epiphany) and concludes with Fat Tuesday. IÂ’ve been to New Orleans in early January, but it was for a conference so I did not get a chance to enjoy any of the Carnival activities. Have any of you been? What did you think?

New Orleans locals may be sick of all the hoo-hah associated with Mardi Gras. Have no fear! ThereÂ’s a special guide to local getaways for you Mardi Gras haters, courtesy of The Times-Picayune.

My favorite warm-weather destinations at this time of year are Hawaii and Arizona. I plugged Spring Training last weekend, but IÂ’ll do so again. East Coast morons can head down to Florida, while those of us in the Western US may prefer catching the Cactus League in Arizona. Our very own moronette, phoenixgal, can give you plenty of great tips about Cactus League baseball.

**EGADS! That link has Governor Tangerine in it. Sorry about that! Here's the current Grapefruit League page.**

OK, so weÂ’ve sampled things from the East Coast to the South to the Western US, what about activities for you Midwesterners? Well, you guys get stuck with ice fishing! And drinking. Heavy drinking! This article from the Post-Tribune provides a round-up of some of the fishing (and hunting) activities going on right now in and around Midwestern lakes.

Speaking of fishing, from our friends Down Under, hereÂ’s a fishing segment that went horribly awry:

As the newsreader said, “Awkward.”

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, morons. And let's hope that Spring comes soon!

59 The knowledge that I would look that stupid and would have to at some point take that snood off is enough to keep me far away from one. It's a nice day in the Colorado mountains and the War Dept. and I will be taking a ride soon ourselves. We're in the 40's, yes! Shed season starts here about now. There are only a few spots where the snow has melted off of south facing slopes for now. But antlers will be found, and the hunting makes for great spring hiking. One of these days I'm going to build an antler chandelier. Now if the snow would melt off the shooting range I'd really be in business. Oh, and the ice needs to go off the river so we can flyfish.

61 Spring is trying to spring up here. I planted crocuses in the 1980s before I dug up everything & planted roses everywhere. I have some early blooming crocus near the house. Thursday morning I tried to see if they were coming up yet but there was snow there. Friday morning while driving out of our driveway I looked & the snow near the house had melted & they are coming up! I canÂ’t see them form living room window because they are too close to the house. I have enclosed porch, with no heat, that I could see them from but do not want to go in there. I canÂ’t believe they even come back every year because I pull all the foliage out & donÂ’t let it die back, which is what is supposed to make them grow. By next weeks they should be in bloom if we donÂ’t have any more snow. I havenÂ’t looked at forecast.

My late wife's Border Collie is mine and he turned 7 last fall/winter. Once the fastest dog I have ever seen, he's slowing down some. Hate to see it, but that's how it is.

My travels are pretty short nowadays. To the foot of the Causeway. ( Yes, we cap all notable landmarks here. Like the Village, the Pier, etc.... ) To the Island but not recently- kind of lost touch with The Cute Cat Lady.

Across the street to Southside Baptist. Yet another widow keep asking me to go with her to church there and I'm glad to oblige.

One trip I keep meaning to make and putting off it to Blue Fin Tattoos here. I have a design from chopper ridin' days I want put on my left shoulder.

A circle with a Cross of Iron laid on its side. Over that? A heart-- with wings. I call it "fireheart...."

75 For Colorado Spring Skiing, A-Basin and Loveland have the best snow (something about the bottom of the mountain being over 10,000 feet). Loveland is good until closing (first weekend of May), A-Basin tends to shut down the good stuff in mid May (typically closing first weekend in June). April is a terrific time to ski these places, there is less traffic, the snow is good, temps are generally warmer. Closing day at any ski area is generally a fun time - with girls skiing in bikinis, pond skimming, throwing snowballs at the last chair, etc.

83 NYTimes runs "Strategies for Dealing With the 2014 Icicle Surplus"
which contains the suggestion that icicles could be used to stab "climate change deniers" in the heart.

Note to Governor Cuomo .. must register all icicles with the state, must have serial numbers on all icicles, and outlaw icicles with a more than 7 stab capacity.

Unreal.

You can see it now because... you LITERALLY can see it now on MSNBC.

Jill, is that real?.  Is the NYT actually advocating (even jokingly) the MURDER of those who don't believe in the AGW scheme?  This reminds me of that video where liberals just push a button to blow up people who annoy them by questioning them.  Those assholes were forced to grovel.  May the same happen to the Old Gray Bitch.

91 83 NYTimes runs "Strategies for Dealing With the 2014 Icicle Surplus" which contains the suggestion that icicles could be used to stab "climate change deniers" in the heart. Posted by: Jill Abramson at February 23, 2014 03:06 PM (e8kgV) The lefties are masters at projection, aren't they? If anybody deserves to be stabbed with an icicle, it's the global warming advocates. This is a cult of fanatics, comparable to the Lysenkoists or the Salem witch burners.

94 Vic, Where have you been all week in the early morning threads? Someone said you had jury duty. I, and many others, missed you.

96 Where's the gum thread? Posted by: Toothless Geezer at February 23, 2014 03:02 PM (rNCEP) That made me laugh! Thanks. I have to go wash tomatoes & crush garlic for CthulhuÂ’s recipe, or rather brief description on how to roast tomatoes. He did not specify oven temp. IÂ’m going to put it on 350 degrees & watch them.

Mine's named Cole, I call him Cole-boy. He's sweet as a kitten and loves everybody, especially the women. That said, Border Collies' legendary intelligence seems to have escaped him- but he's a good guy.

100 Ette in training. GF and I went to the crush in Napa two years ago. We stayed in Calistoga at the Hideaway cottages and had a blast.

101 Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 23, 2014 03:00 PM (QFxY5) A-basin reopened 4th of July 3 years ago. It was a gigantic party. BTW, when the days are warm but it freezes overnight, it's not worth skiing in the morning unless there was major snowfall. Everything ices up and it's best to sleep in and let it soften up.

104 Since our post host broached the topic of gardens, I'll pretend that lawns are more leisure than labor, and ask this question: What's the deal with zoysia? The ad in Popular Science promises that $20 worth of zoysia plugs will spread and multiply, driving out all weeds and crabgrasses (and presumably what's left of our sad, scraggly fescue) to make a lush, verdant carpet. Scam or con game? Somewhere in the back of my mind, I confuse it with invasive, persistent kudzu.
