Surprise: 98% of Reports on the Ice-Bound Antarctic Expedition Fail to Mention They Were Researching "Global Warming"
— Ace

There are some things you're just not allowed to say, some Sacred Writs too holy to undermine with so much as an "ironically enough."

The Russian ship, Akademic Shokalskiy, was stranded in the ice while on a climate change research expedition, yet nearly 98 percent of network news reports about the stranded researchers failed to mention their mission at all. Forty out of 41 stories (97.5 percent) on the network morning and evening news shows since Dec. 25 failed to mention climate change had anything to do with the expedition.

In fact, rather than point out the mission was to find evidence of climate change, the networks often referred to the stranded people as “passengers,” “trackers” and even “tourists,” without a word about climate change or global warming.

Chris Turney, the expedition’s leader, is a professor of climate change at the University of South Wales. According to Turney’s personal website, the purpose of the expedition is to “discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.”

...

According to Fox News, Turney admitted “we’re stuck in our own experiment.” They reported on Dec. 30, that a statement from the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said, “Sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, but here ice is building up.”

An alleged news story from a Canadian paper calls those noting the irony of this situation "climate-change deniers."

ut the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, which sought to retrace the steps famous Australian Antarctic geologist Douglas Mawson tread 100 years ago to see how the landscape had changed, was also mocked by climate-change deniers making hay of the fact that a group of researchers devoted to tracking global warming would get stuck in ice they claim is melting.

"Making hay" now includes "noting obvious ironies."

Something this writer herself did-- she is one of the very few reporters to note the irony of the situation. First paragraph:

Fused between thick sheets of Antarctic ice after numerous failed international rescue efforts, the ship full of climate-change scientists could have spent New Year’s Eve despairing the dicey — and ironic — situation in which they’d found themselves.

But you mustn't laugh too much at the New Gods. They will get angry, and throw a hurricane at you.

18 >>climate change research expedition Nothing says serious research like: >On board there is a cosy bar lounge and a dedicated lecture room/library stocked with a good collection of reference books and videos. Akademik Shokalskiy is not a luxury vessel, with accommodation being reasonably simple yet perfectly comfortable. All cabins have outside portholes or windows, and ample storage space, with the choice of triple & twin shared cabins with shared bathrooms or private twins with private facilities along with superior double cabins and a suite. The spacious bridge is always open to passengers and provides a great vantage point when sailing. The food is typically wholesome and uncomplicated and is served by efficient Russian stewardesses. A small fleet of onboard zodiac enable landings and exploratory cruising. There is a small infirmary with a ships Dr on call, ship to shore communications are available. http://tinyurl.com/mcx5q8b

26 No one seems to notice that this valuable research is needed to prove that the global average temperature is going to rise half a degree over the next 100 years.

You can't just reach a conclusion about global average temperatures based on a week or two event in one minor locality.

You can't cherry pick your data like that. You have to take the temperatures all over, and average them over a long period of time.

It's science, it's math, it's statistics, and it's hard. yo.

59 I guess climate really isnÂ’t weather, and never the twain shall meet. When does weather become climate? When the time frame is favorable to creating a pretty graph that shows warming. The latest cooling period? It's also a driver of the time frame. Climate = the time frame in which the latest cooling period took place + a fudge factor of a couple of years.

Whenever you believe something independent of and even contrary to logic and evidence you have become a slave and are not allowed to think with an open mind. The meme punishes you if you try. If the meme is properly constructed and spread, it does not matter if it is true or false; the effect will be the same.

Mainly biologists, from what I can tell. Because as we all know, incredibly dynamic and difficult to measure biological populations, especially ones long in the past with little fossil presence, are a highly reliable proxy for climate conditions.

Plus also left-wing journalists from the _Grauniad_, er, the _Guardian_. (Those fearless seekers after journalistic truth at whose Web site, in article comments, if you post a link to another article at the very same site which contradicts the first, you'll be banned).

Plus twelve-year old family mmbers, who you can be sure were CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT, Wesley Crusher style, to the success of this "scientific mission". Why they didn't simply repel the ice by re-routing the flux capacitors through the main deflector dish is still a mystery.

Plus a cute little chickadee who is a Down Under regional marketing manager for Google, and whose "cooking channel on YouTube has 50,000 followers".

That's a truly high powered science team, to be sure. Nobels all round!

Without the threat of man-made global warming (or other fictional catastrophe) looming over everything, the transnational Left cannot feasibly justify either outright or de facto regulatory control of the energy industry on a global scale.  Control energy production and distribution and you control nearly everything. Kings, tyrants, and emperors of old could only dream of such power.

197 "Oh no, another Obamacare fail. ER visits go up instead of down with newly insured."

This is, of course, precisely what happened earlier, in Massachusetts, with Romneycare. Proponents of that scheme said that it would drive down inappropriate ER utilization.

Did that happen? Well, no, it did not. ER visits went way up.

That promise joined a long list of other promises made by boosters of Romneycare (lower total cost, shorter wait times, better outcomes, lower unemployment) that were equally falsified by hard cold realities when the rubber met the road.

Did America hear about any of this during the debate about enacting Obamacare? For some reason, the media minions at Minitru failed to mention any of these little details. An oversight, you can be sure.

And did America hear anything about any of this during the 2012 Presidential campaign? No, because the brilliant GOP ran the guy whose political career highlight was creating Romneycare, and he sure as shit wasn't going to be calling it a huge flameout fail-fest.

316 #307, thank you very much. Id prefer to see it as nuclear weapons grade as its been stored up inside for a very long time as I have watched quietly as the leftists have spewed some of the most ignorant and incredibly stupid remarks about the so called "man-made climate change". And watching them dare to call us deniers, flat-earthers and fear mongerers while all the time they flat out refuse to admit what is actually happening all about them weather wise and they are the ones calling for doom and gloom if the temps were to go up 2F or whatever numbers they toss out. Id much rather see global temps rise slightly, like they did in Roman and Midieval times when grapes could grow in England and the Vikings colonized Greenland than see the return of the Ice Ages as that would bring a definite problem for much of man kinds survival but the idiot climate scientists dwell in the land of bizzaro superman and everything is the complete opposite. I talked about the climate scientists being stuck on their little partyship as work today and many of the people there hadn't even heard about it, thanks to our leftist MFM keeping those inconvenient facts hidden, and when I brought out the facts I had learned so far about this situation, many of my co-workers either laughed at the outright stupidity of these scientists or where completely amazed at it. These idiots should be pointed at and laughed at for the rest of their lives for not only the outright ignorance and arrogance they have displayed but by the millions of dollars they have wasted on their little pleasure jaunt and the effort that had to go into their rescue. If it was left to me I would have left them there in their icy graves as I have no mercy or pity for fools. I leave that to God.

318 Isn't there a Darwin Awards category for people who somehow live anyway? Seriously, these guys don't (apparently) even check to see what the ice situation is before heading into the most hostile environment on Earth? How do you even find a ship captain to sail you into that? Even the few stories that expose that it was a Global Warming mission seem to miss out on the fact that 2013 had the HIGHEST sea ice on record (the records going back to 1979). What kind of idiot goes to Antarctica to prove that the ice caps are melting, in a year with RECORD amounts of ice!?! 323 There is only irony if you incorrectly think that AGW means that there cannot be sea-ice capable of trapping a ship in ice in the Antarctic summer. There is only irony if you incorrectly think that the purpose of the expedition was to prove that there is no sea-ice in the Antarctic waters. The expedition expected sea-ice. They planned for it. They looked forward to it. They were thrilled and happy to encounter it. They brought along ATV's specifically to cross sea-ice. They knew their vessel could become ice-bound. It happened to another research vessel in 2012. The mocking of the scientists is ignorant and makes those who do the mocking look ignorant.
