Ten Years of Nonsense: Designated Evil and Sarah Palin
— Gabriel Malor

This post was originally written on January 17, 2011, just days after the Tucson shooting. It was never published, however, and I don't quite remember why. Possibly because I was on vacation, but it's also possible I simply liked this post on Designated Villains, which I wrote and posted the next day, better. MSNBC's decision to make the Romneys, who are very much off the national stage right now, the butt of a joke reminded me.

I meant to write about this last week when Sarah Palin was forced into the center of the news cycle, but some family stuff distracted me. Just as offstage villainy is central to liberal attempts to frame the Tea Party as the Designated Villain of modern American politics, Designated Evil is necessary to sustain the liberal claim that Palin is dumb, but devious, and ditsy, but dangerous.

Designated Evil is when an author of fiction portrays something utterly unremarkable as the Worst. Thing. EVER. The simplest deed will provoke gasps of astonishment at its apparent evil. The technique is supposed to help the reader figure out who the good guy and the bad guy are. The trope fails when the thing being designated as Evil isn't really that bad at all. The audience recognizes that they're being played for fools.

Much of the media's coverage of Sarah Palin falls into the Designated Evil category. Remember when she wrote notes on her hand for a speech? There was breathless media coverage, usually in the vein that she must be an idiot or a political novice to have used notes. This is a Designated Evil. Most public speakers use notes. In fact, the much-acclaimed-for-his-public-speaking President of the United States doesn't just use notes, but simply reads all of his speeches. Nevertheless, an entire news cycle was consumed by Sarah Palin's "hand job", as many outlets referred to it.

Remember when she offered a prayer "that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God"? Again, it became a media feeding frenzy. That she could have the hope that the U.S. military is doing God's work was fodder for another round of vilification, even though such prayers are quite common.

Other examples of Designated Evils related to Palin include the ridiculous coverage of her "refudiate" tweet, a word which Oxford Dictionary later declared "new word of the year." Palin's decision to fly home to give birth fuels Andrew Sullivan's Trig Trutherism to this day, even though the decision was made with the consultation of a doctor. Her unexceptional use of the term "blood libel" made all the papers last week. She was then called out for "inserting herself into the President's news cycle", as if he owns the media or something. All are Designated Evils because they're not really evil or even remarkable and yet, the media cannot help but exhaust themselves with breathless coverage.

In fiction, Designated Evil occurs when there is a disconnect between the author's values and the readers'. In political reporting the disconnect is simply between the values of liberals and conservatives.

12 This is a good post on the topic as is the other post mentioned herein.

The left is engaging in this cheap melodramatic narrative to whip themselves emotionally into a wartime morality posture against domestic political opponents in a way they will never allow the nation to be whipped into a wartime morality posture against radical Islam.

She was a simple housewife who became governor through nothing more than hard work, people skills, and sheer determination. She is to be admired for this reason.

2.  she is both more masculine, feminine, and more of a lady than every one of them.  She has more sexually attractive femininity than them and she can hunt/skin/process her own food.

3.  she actually does not need a man to succeed.  She did not ride her husband's or father's coattails into anything.  She is not a Senator cuz hubby was the Prez.

4.  She isn't afraid.  Think of how that makes leftists feel about themselves -- their views about everything are built on fear.

5.  At the time McCain picked her she had never sold out.

There are probably others as well.  Leftists are locked into what they feel, and narcissists are locked into what they feel about themselves -- around her, they feel like shit.

75 Sara Palin is far from the sharpest tool in the shed, but I do think she is sincere and in NO WAY has deserved the abuse she has received from womyn, feminazis, the gay mafia, and their MFM water carriers. The utter hatred she receives from middle class womyn astounds me. The day she was nominated I said hey, "look the Republicans nominated a woman from Alaska. And she doesn't look like a polar bear." And an educated professional and multiple stars hotter woman than Palin went off on her... and not attacking her politics, attacking her LOOKS. Clearly the biological threat of an alpha female trumps a lot of brain cells in a certain female demographic...

89 I haven’t read much about Andrew Sullivan, I had hoped he had fallen off the radar. Sarah enjoys it, and she’s not afraid to push back. She has more balls than most of the “leaders” in Congress. I admire her. It’s too bad that so many women hate her, for no reason. I believe they are jealous of her. I know of three women, one is my older brother’s ex who hate her. When I ask why, she used to answer I just do. Speaking of his ex, she called me late last night but I wasn’t in the mood to talk & let my VM pick it up. We’re friends but I try to only talk to her before a certain time of night. Otherwise she’s half in the bag and doesn’t remember what we talked about.

I get a kick out of it because I remember a friend doing exactly that 30 years ago, except he was naked and had his clothes in his hands, not a taco. He barely got away. Her daddy caught him balls deep in his 14 year old little girl (he was a teenager too, this wasn't a child molestation thing, it was horny teenagers). I don't think daddy ever found out the one he caught pounding away was her third different guy of the evening.

157 'well there's too schools of thought, despite her popularity among the base,
she was not popular in the Alaskan delegation, so she was a bit of a maverick
in her own right, and that appealed to McCain. The other is that Steve Schmidt, really wanted to tank the election as far back as the time she was picked, hence the defamation campaign, not unlike the one Macchiavelli waged against Catherina Sforza, another gutsy gal, who didn't take his advice.
Nicco went Bashir or Olberman, in his History of Florence, and Treatise on Livy.

158 Sara Palin is far from the sharpest tool in the shed, but I do think she is sincere and in NO WAY has deserved the abuse she has received from womyn, feminazis, the gay mafia, and their MFM water carriers. -- But she's far from the DULLEST tool in the shed, too. Above average I'd say, given her performance as first mayor of Wasilla and then Governor of Alaska, but not so far above that she doesn't identify with the average American...which is sort of the whole point. She's us. And that's why they hate her and feel as though she must be destroyed. *** Right. Which is what appeals to so many. She isn't a great intellect. She didn't receive an Ivy League education. She didn't have nepotism or cronyism on her side. She just had the guts and gumption to make her own path. This utterly confounds the media-elite who could never have made it on their skill and gumption alone.

Eventually I had trouble finding even it locally. There were several reasons I chose .40 over 9mm. Stopping power was one. I simply felt more comfortable with .40 when I was at the range. And, as you said, it was a helluva lot easier to find .40.

171 The utter hatred she receives from middle class womyn astounds me. Crabs in a bucket. Despite women dominating academia, they still don't dominate the hard sciences and it's a major push by universities because they don't see the irony. It's harder to hire an American at a research university than it is a woman, but somehow women are "underrepresented". I've finally figured out why. It's not that men are keeping them out, it's that women tell other women that skill at math is socially unacceptable. That, of course, doesn't fit the feminist paradigm. What? Guys don't want to hire young women? Why?

172 Honestly, the 2 things that harm Palin the most are:

the Sven & Ole accent and the preggo daughter's choice in a beau.

Posted by: Nip Sip at January 01, 2014 04:06 PM (0FSuD)

179 Let's remember three things about why Palin was demonized:

(a) Because of cynical, hard-nosed practical politics that liberals understand better than RINO Republicans do. Palin at the time of her being chosen was an unknown blank slate as far as the rest of the country was concerned. Whomever paints a compelling picture on the blank slate first -- positive or negative -- as a matter of practical politics, wins. The Democrats wisely had a ruthless rapid-response strategy ready to go when Palin got the nod, to define her as fast as possible to the LIVs as being a dangerous idiot. The inept GOP had no such strategy in place to define her positively.

(b) Because of the absolute fury Palin engendered by actually daring to attack Barack Obama. Palin's running mate was exactly what the Democrats wanted: a tepid moderate who was scared to take off the gloves, who was unnerved by digging into Obama's shadowy history, and who spoke in anodyne pleasantries about how America had "nothing to fear" from a President Obama. Palin didn't buy that crap, and Palin actually fought back against Obama. That frightened the hell out of Democrats, who instantly elevated her from a tactical threat to a strategic threat: PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE.

(c) Because of asshat internal Republican maneuvering. It's crystal clear now that many of the McCain campaign operatives who planted bullshit Palin smears in the media after the election were doing so as paid catspaws at the behest of Mitt Romney, who was moving immediately to head off any chance of a Palin 2012 primary fight. Once again, it really would be nice if these RINO types went after Democrats in public in the same remorseless way that they knife conservatives in the back in private. (Never going to happen.)

220 Christianity is their designated evil ... they just won't come right out and say it. But the condemnation of Duckman shows it ... even the right had to constantly point out he was wrong and backward and not "enlightened", and only argued for tolerance ... of him. But looking at society that is not reproducing itself, the slow death of western white culture seems inevitable, unless we nationally decide the Romney picture is a great success story of a man raising a large family with strong values. Promoting the gay lifestyle or the no kids, don't even get married lifestyle, means that culture will die shortly. Even if we import 100 million, we lose our heritage and become Mexico. Of course Miley has now done scientific research and determined she is genetically bisexual ... heh. No ... being different is always appealing, doing the outrageous ... contrary to the norm, is exciting ... but "perverse" ... or call it "sinful" if you want to discourage a nation from going the down the route of destroying the family unit. Destruction of societal norms is the easy route, not the brave one. An enlightened nation would not encourage such open sexuality ... like Miley portrays, or much worse. And even Duckman had no interest in harming and forcing change on those that disagree, but they sure want to harm him, and any that speak freely in disagreement with leftist theology.

Right up until the whole TARP fiasco and his running back to DC to sit in his Senate office doing nothing. He looked ineffectual, and Harry Reid made sure he was ineffectual. She came to Roanoke on a very cold and overcast day and drew over 20,000 people in an outdoor stadium. Mindy, who posts here occasionally, has had some sharp comments from the standpoint of a math teacher about these new "requirements".

What you need to get for your nephew are the Singapore Math course materials. From the country that routinely clocks in at the top of the international league tables in grade-level math accomplishment. There is no soft lefty BS in their curriculum.

Downside: the kid will actually be forced to drill repetitively. Many modern kids find this very offputting. Stories and drawings that convey no understanding are much easier.

266 "Honestly, the 2 things that harm Palin the most are: the Sven Ole accent and the preggo daughter's choice in a beau."

If the campaign had positioned her correctly, there are electorally significant places in the upper Midwest where that accent is familiar and comforting. She did (and does) need to work on the informality of her diction.

As for Bristol's sperm donor, I have to agree, that was damaging. There are a lot of suburban moms in America who worry constantly that their daughter will get knocked up by a loser who will not step up to fathering. Those moms parse having it happen as "bad parenting". Ergo, Sarah and Todd are bad parents.

Of course, for daughters to get knocked up by losers happens in those critical suburban moms' own communities much more than is let on. It's just that in those cases, errant daughter makes a discreet trip to the Surgi-Centre to "correct" her mistake.

Sooth you can carry 9mm effectively in a sub-compact/compact....

The Caracal/Steyr's thrust line on recoil coupled with muzzle porting controls the recoil so it is not too robust for accuracy.

You would not want to shoot it casually as the muzzle braking increases the noise and it is robust for repetition past developing proficiency.

If people can be trained to endure compact/sub-compact .45s 9mm is navigable for many even perhaps a majority of CCW types IMHO

Remembering here the S&W scandium .357 mag.

I am of two minds about all that.

On the one hand, in a genuine self-defense situation, I want as much potent large caliber behind each shot as possible. People who have been in that situation tell me that recoil discomfort is hardly noticeable amid the adrenaline.

On the other hand, heavy sharp recoil induces flinch while training. Hence less accurate aim. People who have been in that situation tell me that aim is hugely degraded by the same adrenaline, so making it even worse to begin with is unwelcome.

Ruger and Beretta both make very find pocket 9mm single-stack pistols. Nothing wrong with a 9 as long as you are using proper ammo (hollowpoint!). The 9mm's bad rep comes from the military requirement to use FMJ, and only because the 9mm JHP reportedly doesn't mushroom out as well as .45ACP FMJ. (IMO, FMJ is crap and suitable only for target ammo; the military requirement to use it was so there would be pretty corpses to bury). Of course, decades of 9mm use in Europe point to different results.

I like the Steyr. I thought about buying one.

They just don't have the spare parts and aftermarket support footprint that the Glock goliath have built up. That's potentially significant when contemplating potential societal and economic disruption, when what you can scare up locally WILL be what you have to work with, full stop.

I was also disappointed when they did away with the trigger guard safety setup on the gen one Steyrs. Goddamned liability lawyers.

Everyone knew that if they had had another but sober pilot everyone would have died. But it wasn't addressed at all other than to establish it. 329 Mindy, who posts here occasionally, has had some sharp comments from the standpoint of a math teacher about these new "requirements". Posted by: torquewrench at January 01, 2014 08:28 PM (gqT4g) +100 on the Singapore Math I actually have no objection per se to stories and pictures, since they can be used to increase understanding. I draw pictures myself when solving problems. The potential concern about your nephew's curriculum is that there is a movement to use math to further the goal of producing good little collectivists who will look to the State as their savior. Our local community college adopted a text like this recently, and I heartily object.

How does that work? Math teaches reason and methodology and requires logical thinking. None of those are qualities that collectivism requires, in fact they're anathema to collectivism. Math doesn't seem to be a suitable vehicle for induction.

363 Hey, Gabriel. Nice article. This was you? How come you don't write anything recently? Ha ha. Okay, it sounded funny in my head. ISFIMH The only part I had a problem with was: In political reporting the disconnect is simply between the values of liberals and conservatives. I'd say, more exactly, you've described those with values and those lacking same. #PajamaBoy reportedly wrote, "We have no morals," and that's a fair representation of his ilk. The Regressives' Playbook does not include "truth" and has only a passing, pragmatic regard for "fact." They're not concerned with "values," but what is dictated by the current "narrative" - monkey mind which flings anything to see what sticks; does what feels or sounds nice without concern for complexity or consequences; and culminates in complete psychic disruption - cognitive dissonance which gets you trapped in the Antarctic. "Values" will be based on consistent and reasonable principles. We may not all agree on the finer points, but we know how to apply thoughtfulness to decision, which culminates in a healthy society and builds for the future. Maybe I'm just getting old, seen it all twice before, but it seems like the differences between those who seek truth and the children of the lie get clearer all the time; increasingly in a sharp curve. Almost as if there was some kind of shaking-out going on.

I disagreed with her decision to leave the AK governorship, but I also realize that it had become financially untenable for her to stay in office, thanks to the baseless nuisance "ethics" charges with which the institutional left had besieged her.

A reminder about how that crap worked. The letter of the law said that anyone could bring an ethics charge on any grounds. The charge could not be dismissed on the grounds of its having been filed by a vexatious serial litigant (as the majority of them had been). And the officeholder had to defend themselves out of their own pocket!

It was so bad that after Palin left office, the law was quietly pulled back.

Let's enact that as a federal law this year with the identical stipulations and see how long it is before Obama turns "quitter".

Ditto the Styer.  The earlier M-9 is my favorite, actually.

And the 9mm vs. .40?

The .40 S ampersand W cartridge....   20 percent higher cost, 30 percent more recoil and muzzle blast, two fewer in the mag, for but a 10 percent increase in energy at the muzzle.

Those two extra rounds could mean the all the difference in the world.  Hell, if it's just energy you want, go with the 10mm, or .357 revolver with full power loads.

If the SHTF, the gun I would really want, would be the S ampersand W Model 28 Highway Patrolman.....yeah, the same one that went down somewhere in Galveston Bay, during Hurricane Ike.

Miss that gun.  Miss the boat, too.

And this is the eternal debate. I have an old, old friend who was NCHP 30 years ago, and shot six times at a stop. He staggered back to his cruiser and called for help. He wears the last round extracted from him as a necklace.

The key is to carry a gun concealable enough, and convenient enough that you will actually carry it.

It's astonishing how much she can still make them feel threatened despite their accusations of imbecile.

At her convention speech, she spoke the truth about what liberals are, what they believe, and why they are fools.

To Liberal regressives , speaking the truth about them is like shining sunlight on a Vampire.   First, it hurts, then it causes people to doubt their carefully crafted narrative.

They have a perverse notion that despite everything they are the victim.

I grew up in a toxic environ, I carry a lot of guilt because I acted as my bi-polar mother's chief enabler and enforcer of discipline when she abrogated stewardship of our home.

I bullied a sister that was older than me and my younger brother into disrupting the routine as much as possible.  When my sister eventually ran away after my mother delivered her an epic beating I got to be mom's stress toy to boot.  My release from the stress was to become a bully thumper.

I had been raised to believe that bullying vitiated a person from moral opprobrium for victimizing those who victimized others.

"Designated hero" anyone?

Society has recoiled VERY much away from allowing children the moral weapons free to deal with bullying on their level because the left demands SOLE ownership of the "victim/bully" target identifier.

My son is being ruined for heroism in some ways IMHO b/c the school punishes those who retaliate against bullying worse than the bully in many cases.

The academy inflicts its fucked up distorted abacus of demographics rather than a moral dissection of culpability when things come to a head and as such I have been forced to warn off my son from straightening his spine too quickly.

The point is we are in a moral war, and *my* side refuses to acknowledge *their* opponent enables their worst actors to go as close to weapons free as law and society will allow.

Case in point the Democrats, media, cops, and SEIU at "protests."

383 "The goblin did not realize that he was dead, until he had chased Lonnie for a block, and his brain finally ran out of oxygen."

I used to shoot with a guy whose carry arrangement was a canister of pepper spray in the off-hand pocket, and a concealed holster small automatic on the shooting hand side.

His drill was to get the pepper spray up and out and in front with the off-hand and then to speed-rock the pistol with the other hand.

Multiple reasons. First, if you have to shoot, it makes your legitimacy of self defense claim stronger if you at least tried the nonlethal method. Second, you can sometimes spray widely in front of you and retreat behind the cloud. Third, such a retreat gives you more time to aim and fire, and get off more rounds. Fourth, if you have to shoot and the pistol doesn't drop the perp, the spray complicates his pursuit of you.

I personally worry about any single-hand grip on a weapon, and being able to retain it in a struggle. It is not unheard of for aggressive crims confronting cops carrying sprays and guns to quickly prison-yard-rush right through the spray cone and start grabbing for the gun.

Sarah Palin's sin was being correct and identifying what should have unified our caucus to victory.

Her error was in thinking McCain wanted victory.

385 358 ----No, just stupid, because you weren't there. I was. The girl was the aggressor, I watched the whole thing play out. Maybe I should be in a self righteous rage over how those poor innocent boys were molested by an unscrupulous woman child, what do you think? That's a whole lot closer to the truth. Posted by: Weirddave at January 01, 2014 09:15 PM (N/cFh) ---------------------------- If you say she was the aggressor and exploiting the guys, I completely believe you. This can happen and, as you say, you were there. All I'm saying is that (to me) there is something extremely sad and wrong about the whole situation, regardless of whether one side, all sides, or no sides were to blame in some kind of moral sense.

386 Math doesn't seem to be a suitable vehicle for induction. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at January 01, 2014 09:16 PM (32Scy) You are correct, but they've managed it somehow. This new text obscures reason, methodology, and logical thinking. Students are left with some fuzzy, poorly-directed impulses with which to tackle problems and a feeling that math is a impenetrable mystery best left to the smart people. In place of an orderly presentation of the beauty of math, we have scenarios involving numbers where the student is urged to opine about whether some social situation is "fair." Or we are reminded that the risks inherent in capitalism always disappoint, the student will never be the employer, only an exploited employee, individual effort is inferior to group work, and it's our job to keep our peers in line. Oh, and it's not fair that some people are paid more than others. It used to be that instructors were expected to teach a particular set of concepts and were provided a text to help them do so. Now the text tells us exactly how we are to present the material because, you know, quality improves if everyone conforms to the same script. Arggh.

387 Yes, I remember when Sarah Palin burst upon the scene in late August 2008. Obama's campaign had almost an air of inevitability about it, generated by the media, of course. McCain had won the Republican primary, but excited almost nobody. I already knew who and what TFG was: a Marxist with a frightening cult of personality. I had already grown disgusted by the sight and sound of him even before the Styrofoam Columns speech, which I refused to watch. I was at work the day McCain announced his VP pick, so I missed her first speech on the campaign trail. I heard the news on the radio. He picked who? I had never heard of her. Over the next few days, the more I learned about her, the more I liked her. Then came her speech at the convention, where she tore the roof off the joint. Wow! For me, that was the political equivalent of love at first sight. I thought the campaign had reached a turning point right then and there. She so far outshone McCain that it wasn't even funny. And a running mate who was a strong, articulate woman should surely help with the womens' vote, right? The demonization of her by the media, pundits, and comedians commenced immediately, as if on cue. I have never seen such a systematic campaign of character assassination in my life. Despite that, McCain/Palin began moving up in the polls and passed Obama/Biden to take the lead by mid-September. Then came the stock market crash. As if on cue. Obama retook the lead and never lost it. Meanwhile, I volunteered at my local campaign office, doing things like stuffing envelopes, assembling yard signs, making phone calls, etc. I had never done that before, and I sure wasn't doing it because of McCain. About a week before the election I had a chance to attend an event where she would be speaking. I reserved a vacation day at work. But that morning the event was cancelled due to the weather. TFG went ahead with his campaign speech in the area the same day. He was late as usual, and made his supporters wait over an hour in the freezing rain. That tells you something about the two of them, right? A few days later McCain made a campaign stop. I don't know how many people were there, but it was an enormous overflow crowd. Palin was not scheduled to appear, but I guarantee you that many of the people who showed up did so in the hope that she would make a surprise appearance. I know I did. I wrote her a personal thank-you letter after the election. That's also something I've never done before with a political candidate, or since.

Good point, but the Navi are the designated Good Guys so his betrayal is good...never mind that I did not really see any evidence that the Navi are innately any more likely to act harmoniously with a moral race that is not engineered to look similar to them.

394 That horrible RethugliKKKan whore Sarah Palin is DEFINITELY EVIL. She's a stupid Xtianist who dresses like a slut and has all the wrong opinions on everything. She's as retarded as her "son". Andrew Sullivan deserves a lot of credit for his brave journalism dealing with her and the threat she poses to progressive thought.

395 We will never see another honest election in America. The media will never allow one. And the most aggravating thing? Both parties are in on the scam. If you think any election or any politician will save America, you believe in, well, fairies. I believe in GOD, and being prepared.

396 She's as retarded as her "son". Andrew Sullivan deserves a lot of credit.... - Mary Cloggenstein You know, I usually get a lot of enjoyment out of Mary. So utterly deluded, but in an old-fashioned way like people I've known. This is Mary's dark side. Which may also reflect the current state of people I've known, but certainly reflects their ilk and political kin. No smiles.

397 rickl: "Despite that, McCain/Palin began moving up in the polls and passed Obama/Biden to take the lead by mid-September. Then came the stock market crash. As if on cue. I am normally ultra-skeptical of conspiracy theories but I haven't crossed that one off my list yet.
