The Human Foible of Believing Oneself Superior to Others Extends Even to... Prisoners
— Ace

Better Than You.

Except on one count. We'll get to that.

They compared themselves in one survey to other prisoners (the average prisoner) and in the other survey to the average member of all society.

The results suggest low self-esteem is not among the prisoners’ problems. Compared to their fellow inmates, “they rated themselves as more moral, kinder to others, more self-controlled, more law-abiding, more compassionate, more generous, more dependable, more trustworthy, and more honest.”

In addition, “Participants rated themselves as better than the average community member on all traits, with the exception of law-abidingness.” On that last point, the researchers report, “they rated themselves as equally law abiding” as the average person, “which may be the most surprising of all, given their incarcerated status.”

This provides evidence of the robust—and groundless—nature of the “better-than-average effect.”

On law-abidingess, inmates in stir are "average." In all other areas -- including kindness! -- they're better than average.

Hilarious.

Thanks to @rdbrewer4.

It sounds like prisoners rate themselves relatively, according to life in prison.

As a person residing in prison, I might believe I was a "good" person if I went a whole day/week/month without committing a crime, whereas a person living on the outside might have a higher bar of 'goodness' that includes actual acts to demonstrate that quality.

They then filled out a second survey, in which they rated how they compared to “the average member of the community” on all of the above characteristics.

I wonder if "all society" and "the community" are the same in the minds of the prisoners taking survey. If I lived in a prison, I might well think that "the community" was the prison. They did previously ask specifically about the prison population, so perhaps the surveyors assumed that the prisoners would realize that they meant society at large when they used the "community" language, but I wonder if the prisoners answered that way.

101 This book was a good read: Inside The Criminal Mind by Stanton Samenow Ph.D. He discusses a lot of these issues in a clear-headed way. He is not a big fan of rehabilitation, thinks it is very difficult to get a criminal to change the basic way of thinking that makes them who they are. I briefly would summarize it thusly: The evolution of the criminal mind starts with learning patterns of manipulation early in life that enable him to negotiate the real world without consequences. The thought process becomes twisted into a sense of entitlement and distorted "self logic" and a belief that the rules others live by don't apply to him. At some point, the budding criminal makes a conscious decision to behave the way he does, as opposed to being shaped by outside forces

The guy has a rule, assistant coaches can leave him to take a Head Coaching job, and he will bless and help them all he can. But if you leave to take another assistant job, he takes it as a slap in the face.

True but the average person in prison != the average person. There's a big difference between second degree rape-rape and reckless driving and aggravated littering.

115 59 You know what prisoners the prisoners really hate? Rapists and child molesters. It's somebody they can feel superior to. Those two types of sex offenders usually have a dicey time of it in stir, or so I've heard. Posted by: OregonMuse at January 10, 2014 06:16 PM (xm1A1) ____ I don't think it's feeling superior as much as child molesters are universally despised. 119 re 90: no, because one guy doesn't force himself on another guy to get him pregnant.

once again, let's let Lady PIV speak:

"...intercourse is inherently harmful to women and intentionally so, because it causes pregnancy in women. The purpose of men enforcing intercourse regularly (as in, more than once a month) onto women is because itÂ’s the surest way to cause pregnancy and force childbearing against our will, and thereby gain control over our reproductive powers"

also, and I do not believe you can make this stuff up:

"If we look at the act in more detail (skip this parag if you canÂ’t take it), PIV is a man mounting on a woman to thrust a large member of himself into her most intimate parts, often forcing her to be entirely naked, banging himself against her with the whole weight of his body and hips, shaking her like he would stuff a corpse, then using her insides as a receptacle for his penile dejection. How is this a normal civilised, respectful way to treat anyone? Sorry for the explicit picture, but this is what it is and itÂ’s absolutely revolting and violating."

Add in the more sociopathic leaning morals, and as I said the risk and reward ratio dissonance and "voila."

Prison did not reform my brother "structurally" it taught him "mostly" he does not like prison.  He gained a few skills I guess, he learned canine training and basic heating and air.  He is mostly clean and straight but he never will be entirely because ~11 years old he decided the society owed him something for the pain we endured.

I was blessed enough to have good people who loved me as a foster family.  It is never easy to wonder if you should have done more.  Kids have a hard time raising kids.

Prisoners differ from the average unincarcerated citizenry, though, in that 1) the prisoners choose more serious laws to violate than the average unincarcerated law-abider, 2) the prisoners possess below-average common sense compared to average, unincarcerated law abiders, and 3) as a result, the prisoners got caught (obviously, or they wouldn't be prisoners, right?).

He's living with my aunt because he can't make enough to move on his own, she pays for his car insurance and car because he can't afford them, pays for his cell phone, and is currently paying for several of his offspring (clothes, medicine, cell phones, car insurance for the oldest). Oh, yeah, and he is also Super Dad and totally blew my aunt off when he got back and let his oldest daughter go spend the weekends with her BFF "Katie." My aunt was like, "she doesn't have a friend Katie; she's trying to get knocked-up before her boyfriend goes to a different town for school." Fast forward 4 months, and now Super Dad is furious because his stupid 17-year-old daughter got pregnant.

193 Crime is an IQ test. Prison is a failing grade. As an undergrad I interviewed max-security hard case prisoners for a sweet work-release program they all wanted to get into. I learned: Everyone in prison is innocent. Everyone in prison is an effing GENIUS. Just ask them. Most convicts believe they are infinitely smarter than the cops, lawyers and judge that put them in prison. They also believe they are smarter than YOU, dumbass. And they have so little impulse control they will often say that to your face even as they are begging you for a crucial favor. Prison is a microcosm of the real world, low grade rocks-stupid morons each convinced he is the smartest guy ever to bestride the planet.
