More true than funny, this Onion post tweeted by @charlescwcooke spoofs the dominant, privileged leftist cultural's hatred of all things religious -- while noting that it's the religious who are actually doing something about the left's claimed highest value of helping the poor, efault">while the left just talks about doing something about helping the poor.

@heavyhokie points out the joke is at the expense of the average Onion reader. So a joke with an actual risk factor.

21 Yep. When you see the schedules at the Soup Kitchen forr a month at a time every single slot is filled by a church or Synagogue. Went to the RCC for Mass (I just sat in. I didn't take the Eucharist) on New Year's Dayay because I thought it was a great time to go to church. They had a regular monthly date in their bulletin for a time to serve at the food pantry. Every single food pantry and clothing center I have worked out was operated out of church or stared by a church. Yep, we're just brainwashed sheeple who couldn't care less about the poor.

47 Our church took in over $75,000 in our Christmas offering targeted specifically for efforts like these - outreach to the poor and the vulnerable.  It's not like we spend it on ourselves.  We don't even have our own church facilities. We meet at the local movie theater.

48 I once met this guy who told me how selfish people of faith were. And, he said, you just go to the Soup Kitchen so you can feel better about yourself. O.K. I said, When was the last time you helped out at the Soup Kitchen? I don't have to do that he said. My support comes from United Way at work. oooooookay. Now I know very nice people who help out at food pantries who aren't people of faith but some of the most backbreaking work in getting supplies at the Food Pantry tended to be done by the 70 year old church ladies who had been doing it for ten years or more.

No gov't agency is funded by private donations, so in this example, zero people get fed.

89 My high school, Papist diddlers and all, did a huge fundraiser for a local "Mustard Seed" food-only shelter, no beds, every year. Most of the patrons were adults with addictions, but every day there were also young kids and random castaways without a decent meal for a couple days. Opens one's eyes, especially living only a couple miles from where people are essentially starving. Also, after lunch everyday, all the unsold cafeteria grinders, desserts, etc. were sent directly to the place. They had the same lunches we did.

There's an element of that in ALL charity. Of course, you feel better about yourself when you help someone. Don't tell me libs who write checks to PETA or Sierra Club or the DNC for that matter don't feel better about themselves. In fact that's the only reason libs have for giving to charity - whether the charity actually helps anybody is another matter.

 

 I remember the WSJ reporting after Katrina that the 2 most effective charities with the lowest overhead were the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. The SA was effective in the largely Protestant Gulf region and CC did excellent work in the New Orleans, due to the network of parishes that have been built up there over 3 centuries. The WSJ reported the Red Cross wasn't nearly as efficient as those two, but in the comments section, there were a bunch of leftists saying "Well, I'm giving to the Red Cross anyway, because no way can I give to those stinking Christianists!"

The people who show up once or twice a month leave with a warm glow. Those who do it every day get beat down by it. They're as emotionally drained at the end of the day as you and I are after work. They are sacrificing time they could be spending doing something "more fun." But there is far more for the regulars.

More important (And controversial! heh) is that she believes sexuality is a trait that can be environmentally conditioned. I wonder if GLAAD knows about her assertion that each one of them is a few conditioning sessions away from a happy heterosexual life. I wonder how they would feel about that.

441 Speaking of the evil patriarchy -- Acquaintance was telling me that his mom works in dispatch for a transportation company. She is bitter about the misogyny inherent in the system and claims a person in her company must have a penis to be promoted without a college degree. So she is going to college to get a degree in womyn's studies. I wonder if her employer will be able to recognize how much more value she adds to the company with her new degree and will grant her the much-deserved promotion.

449 Well, talk about charity, I gave a homeless guy his last meal...a half container of Papaya and a Big Texas Cinnamon Bun. Shortly after I left our warehouse on a delivery, one of my associates called me to tell me the guy collapsed outside our warehouse and died.

The headline read..." Man Dies From Eating Big Texas Cinnamon Bun And Complications Arising  From Alcoholism And Homelessness, But Mostly From Complications Arising From Alcoholism And Homelessness."

I really did feel bad for the old guy and hated that he went out like that.

I had to explain that it was a satiric film about politics that was funny at one time, but had been overtaken by events. You know that politics *really* has jumped the rails when the Clinton administration starts to look sane.
