The Rise and Decline and Decline and Decline and Poop-Eating of MSNBC
— Ace

Eh, MSNBC chiefly exists to provide easy content to right-wing bloggers and Tommy Christopher.

Politico's Dylan Byers charts MSNBC's fall.

There are only so many ways to say MSNBC sucks. Let's try it in graph form.

stateofcable.jpg
Pictured (L to R): A black line, a red line, and a yellow line;
and another black line, another red line, and another yellow line

MSNBC suffered harder loses in 2013 -- in terms of both viewership and revenue -- than either of its competitors at Fox News and CNN, according to Nielsen data featured in a new Pew Research report. Primetime viewership declined by a staggering 24 percent (nearly twice the loss sustained by CNN and four-times that sustained by Fox News). Daytime viewership fell by 15 percent, even as it rose at both of the other networks.

On the revenue side, MSNBC was projected to decline by 2 percent, while both CNN and Fox News were projected to experience growth of 2 percent and 5 percent, respectively. MSNBC was expected to bring in $475 million in revenue: less than half what CNN will make and roughly one-quarter of what Fox News will make.

Politico's article is mostly taken from a Pew report on the State of the Media.

In bad news, network newscasts actually gained viewers, but at least NBC lost them:

In the evening, an average of 22.6 million viewers tuned into one of the three commercial broadcast news programs on ABC, CBS or NBC, a 2.3% increase over the average viewership for 2012, according to Pew Research analysis of Nielsen Media Research data. The ABC World News increased 2.2% to 7.7 million viewers on average and CBS Evening News increased 6.5% to 6.5 million viewers. NBC Nightly News, the ratings leader, was the only evening news program to decrease, dipping 0.7% to 8.4 million viewers on average.

Byers' blames MSNBC's woes on the relative decline of the only story the network cares about: Bush Bad, Obama Good (or perhaps, Obama God).

With Bush now out of office for over five years, and Obama's presidency looking like, at best, a "slog" (the media's term), and at worst, an unmitigated disaster (everyone else's term), they're trying to get by on Outrage Porn alone.

And Ronan Farrow. Who was a Rhodes Scholar, you know.

CNN International, relatively fixed per cable subscriber fees

Posted by: Jon Stewart at March 26, 2014 09:03 AM (kFxpe)

28 I'm amazed that the networks still have that kind of viewership.  I don't think I've watched a network newscast since the first Gulf War, when Dan Rather would be saying "there are unconfirmed reports of..." something I had seen happen live on CNN a few hours earlier.

30 Maybe the entire cast could wear tampon earrings for a day.  We could call it, like, Tampon Earring Day, A Special Television Event.

Posted by: The Suits at a Suit Meeting at MSNBC at March 26, 2014 09:04 AM (8ZskC)

31 MSNBC is still a profit-center. It's easy and cheap to produce content. Big difference, revenue-wise, between FoxNews and MSNBC is the subscriber fees that Fox commands. Much higher. MSNBC is, I believe, set to renegotiate some of their deals fairly soon. We'll see if they can demand higher fees or not. Subscriber fees (passed on through cable/satcasters) and ad revenue are the big sources of revenue. Ad revenue is why Fox fired Beck, the Left's advertiser boycott actually worked in that Fox decided that firing Beck would lower ratings but they could charge more and get advertiser's with deeper pockets. Firing Beck clearly didn't hurt Fox's bottom line.

But part of the creep factor in Sinatra's marriage to Mia Farrow was the fact that her dad looked a lot like him (aside from their being close in age), wasn't it? The establishment GOP have repeatedly shot down every legislative proposal for a la carte cable channels, where you would have the opportunity to pick what you want to have piped in, and pay for only that.

Almost as though the establishment GOP don't believe their own rhetoric about consumer choice. And almost as though there were a political/media status quo with which they were privately pretty happy.

82 Yeah, the finances of Blaze are still opaque. Beck's radio show is the cash cow and I think he's using that to bankroll the other operations. But supposedly Beck has 300+ employees down there now working all the media operations coming out of Blaze. TV, radio, books, website. live plays, live shows. Dude is king of all media. But he wants on cable. That's the big money. He wants to get 25 cents from every cable TV house in America once a month. MSNBC gets about that, I think. 100M *12 months * 25 cents = $600M in annual revenue. That's just from subscriber fees. And 25 cents per months is what a 3rd tier channel gets. Industry rumors are that Al-Jazeera waived its fee. It's run as a money-losing charity by the govt of Qatar to spread Islam.

[...] The ABC World News increased 2.2% to 7.7 million viewers on average and CBS Evening News increased 6.5% to 6.5 million viewers. NBC Nightly News, the ratings leader, was the only evening news program to decrease, dipping 0.7% to 8.4 million viewers on average. ******* We always talk about the cables but it is the networks that still hold the cards--and even though NBC lost viewers they still have the most and significantly more than the biggest cable--FOX.

Posted by: Timon at March 26, 2014 01:08 PM (kAniV) True story: Several years ago, I was stuck in an airport on a Sunday during the NFL playoffs. All the flights were delayed and it was impossible to get close enough for anyone, let alone me, to see the games on the only restaurant in that terminal. This was pre NFL on your phone, laptop, tablet, what have you, so it's not like everyone could watch on their own devices. People kept going up to the various airline counters and asking that the tvs be changed from CNN. The airline people kept saying no, sorry, we can't do that.
It was getting rather testy and there were multiple plots underway to hoist someone up to try changing the channels directly when a maintenance door opened, a guy walked out with a remote and changed all the tvs to the game. Needless to say, he was hailed as a conquering hero.

120 Consumers are hitting their limit on monthly cable bill, so Comcast, et al, are resisting adding channels and raising fees. Comcast and the others held fast against FoxSports 1 and 2 when they launched and demanded big new fees. Fox Sports 1 was Speed and only got 25 cents a month or so. Fox demanded $1 per month per sub and Comcast said go to hell. Fox folded. Problem is FoxSports big on TV sports rights for Nascar, MLB, etc on the assumption of huge new fees from Comcast, etc, that haven't happened yet. So that's a potential train wreck. I think Fox still thinks they will get the higher fees in the next year or two. If they don't they are in trouble, cause they owe Nascar and MLB and others billions.

NBCSports has Nascar, IndyCar, and F1 MavTV (owned by Lucas Oil) has everything that has a motor and Lucas Oil sticker on the side. "With Bush now out of office for over five years, and Obama's presidency looking like, at best, a "slog" (the media's term), and at worst, an unmitigated disaster (everyone else's term), they're trying to get by on Outrage Porn alone."

Outrage is a fine emotion, gets the base energized, opens wallets, and all of that.  It is exhausting, though.  Like suspense it can only go on so long before the normal person relaxes and begins to wonder if anything is actually happening.  "Where's the doom?  I was expecting an earth-cleansing doom and everything looks pretty much the same as ever."

Now, there are some who need the outrage, its their crack, their addiction and they will be there every day to get their hit.  That's MSNBC's core audience and they are catering to this group.  They find themselves just one little network in a sea of left-wing cable and broadcast choices, so they cater to the niche that needs their outrage daily - red, bleeding, and writhing.

And they order by the metric ckuf-ton from the Outrage Outlet so I want them to continue on this path.

224 Actually, MSNBC is much more competitive in the 18-49 demographic that advertisers care so much about. Even occasionally beats Fox in the demo. That's not a dummy argument. The 18-49 demo ratings are the industry standard used to measure success. Advertisers are willing to pay more for younger viewers. A low-rated show can survive if it does well in the demo, despite otherwise low ratings.

253 The age demo is not the only important metric, but it's the one that is released publicly. TVByTheNumbers is a good industry resource. And they run predictions on which shows get canceled or renewed. It's pretty accurate and is based on demo ratings -- basically whether the show underperforms for that channel in the demo or not. WWE does well in the demo, but the advertisers still won't pay high rates cause it's considered a low-class show for low-class people. Advertisers ideally want young, upper-middle class viewers - people that they think are influential. The assumption is if you get the higher status kids to like your stuff, the low class kids will copy them. Whereas if you get the low class kids to like your stuff, the the higher class kids will reject it cause it's low class. So WWE is stuck with advertising from K-mart. WWE constantly brags about all the young people that watch, but the advertisers say, yeah, but they're poor and lower class, so ... meh. It's why AMC goes for "prestige" shows. No K-mart ads for them.

Can you imagine the sea change in public opinion that would result if say one of the Networks (ABC,NBC or CBS) decided to follow the Fox News model and ever so slightly tilt to the right?

It's worth a minimum of 5% to the Democrats on election night--that's how huge it is.

Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at March 26, 2014 01:50 PM (659DL) ****** Ya--there was this at one of the links. Revenue from license fees, which cable channels charge to providers in exchange for the right to carry their programming, continued to grow in 2013, according to projections, becoming a larger part of the revenue pie for the news channels. For CNN, license fee revenue now accounts for 64% of its total intake. For Fox, it is 58%. And for MSNBC, it makes up 51% of total revenue.

He's not worried or doesn't seem to care, but I suspect that he is stressing about it underneath since he has been diagnosed with some health issues.  The Bronze plan is unaffordable, even with subsidies.  He's already dirt poor and won't be able to pay for it unless we help him (give him the money).  He is planning to opt out and just pay the penalty.

383 “There are some people who are not like my grandchildren who can handle everything so easily on the Internet, and these people need a little extra time. It’s not — the example they gave us is a 63-year-old woman came into the store and said, ‘I almost got it. Every time I just about got there, it would cut me off.’ We have a lot of people just like this through no fault of the Internet, but because people are not educated on how to use the Internet.”

This is Reid's example of a person who doesn't know how to use the internet.  Holy carp he's dumb.  Just because the user is 63 doesn't mean she didn't use the internet right.  Based on the little info provided it sounds like a WEBSITE failure, but not user failure.

391 I'm finding myself agreeing with Flatbush Joe again (I guess two guys from Brooklyn will wind up agreeing on things?), that MSNBC isn't going away anytime soon because it actually performs well enough in the demos that matter to advertisers. (Maddow will actually win the 18-49 or 25-54 demos against FOXN occasionally, though I wouldn't be surprised if her "Nuthin' But Bridgegate!" run for the last 2 months has finally caught up to her.) The importance of demographics also explains why TV programs that actually draw a lot of total viewers (CSI, NCIS, Murphy's Law, JAG etc.) will be ignored by the media and even threatened with cancellation while "hip!" programs that few people actually watch will stay on the air long past their expiration date. I'm not saying it's fair, or leads to television that's representative of what the average American actually wants to watch, but that's how the biz works. Now, who wants to talk some more about that jerkoff Lena Dunham!?

403 Our SecDef talks like a fag and his shit's all retarded. I don’t think at this point we can rule anything in or out. I think we have to continue to search, as we are. And you know the United States continues to stay committed,” Hagel said. He noted the U.S. has aircraft working out of Malaysia and Perth, Australia, to assist in the search. “So until we have more information, we don’t know,” he added. On what it means for how the U.S. can prepare security-wise, Hagel said “I think any country — and I can only speak for the United States — always is evolving and is always recognizing new challenges and threats and trying to anticipate those.” “That’s the mission of this enterprise, security of this country, working with all our interagency partners, intelligence, homeland security,” he said. “So the world is dangerous. We recognize that. There are new threats coming at us in different ways all the time. So you have to continue to prepare.”

405 Well, yeah, but you probably only have like three or four different email addresses. Tops. How many do you think Lerner was using?

How much do you want to bet they've got a bevy of interns printing out multiple copies of each email, sending them out to about 20 different agents, and then they all have meetings about the contents and whether it's damaging.  If so, it gets redacted and scanned back into some document storage site.

407 I'm late here so don't know if it has been mentioned but I listened to about 5 minutes of Barry's speech to the EU in Belgium a while ago. As far as I can tell neither he nor his speech writers have learned anything about American history in the last 5 years. Since the beginning Barry has shown an egregious lack of knowledge about American history and it still holds. He said, in today's speech, that Europe's democratic ideals and personal freedom in the 1600s inspired the Pilgrims to travel to the New World to emulate that society. He claimed that his visit to Flanders field reminded him that the time when Nationalism caused Wars is over. This is the issue with NBC. They are not only trying to rewrite history as Barry's mob are, but neither group actually knows and understands history. Let me repeat that for my own outrage: President Obama does not know American history. NBC is the network that said that George Washington was considered a terrorist in his time on the nightly news.

Easiest method:

That's it.  Now you can use ampersands.  Pixy can't code for carp, so he scrubs ampersands to keep people from using html code on his gum and bailing-wire website.

423 I watched a bit of that girl Ronan you all are talking about.

My take:  (1) she should stop dressing like a man and be herself; (2) she does not have an engaging style, rather, comes off as a less affected Peggy Noonanish self styled brainiac knowing oh so much at her young age; (3) she has the timing of a bad comic;  (4) her segues in thought and to topics are as smooth as dried lava (not obsidian, mind you); (5) she offers very little personal insight into anything (save for perhaps place/name dropping to establish her façionableness) as if she was pampered in a high class bubble and has not ventured at all into the real world; and, (6) thus does not connect with any normal human being.  Nice ass though.
