The Sweet Tears of Epic Failure - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Footage has been discovered of the aftermath of the failed UAW attempt to unionize the Volkswagon plant in Chattanooga, TN. Ordinarily, I loathe gloating. It's just bad form. I prefer that winners act like, well, winners.

In this case, however, I'll make an exception.

Behold the joyous celebration.

South Park marathon on Comedy Central now underway.

18 I've said this 3 times already but be aware the unions will appeal and they will appeal to the NLRB which Obama has packed with union thugs thanks to the "deal" the GOP leadership made.

They will either call for an immediate new election for a second chance in which they will intimidate the hell out those 100 or so workers who voted against it or just go who hog and "deem" it passed.

The unions wanted this one BAD and while criminals are running everything in the executive branch they can get what they want.

This is why Unions want 'card check' so bad...and also want to do away with secret ballot.

When given the choice, most people don't see the need to join a friggin union.

Unions don't want people to have a choice.

And they want to be able to see who is not voting for it...so they can threaten them.

29 It was very interesting to read the UAW's take on this and why they wanted it so badly.  They've lost 3/4 of their peak membership, their new workers will make less by far than those in the nonunion transplants, and everyone views them as nothing but a group of criminal thugs.  The only way they can see to survive is to persuade workers in other countries to join forces with them and do to their companies what the UAW did to the American ones.  Other than that, their future is bright.

60 Why unionize and again why not?  That decision depends on the situation of the workers.  If it was 1920's America in an industrial plant and all that entails then heck yeah I would want a union!  In 2014 America and in an industrial plant then no.

Why?  Because the unions won back then.  Laws and regulations were written and are enforced.  The conditions that would drive someone to unionize are no longer there; the unions won and things have changed to the point that a union is superfluous.  It is a bad thing for union leaders, but it is a good thing for workers.

Stop fighting the last war.  Henry Ford is dead; J.P. Morgan is dead; Pullman is dead.  Keeping this struggle up is to become the French General Staff in 1940, prepared once again to fight the Franco-Prussian War.  And armed to lose.

62 Organized labor = organized crime. This is a great piece of news that has brightened my day. To go completely OT, last week there was a "hate crime" committed at a Jr. High in my sleepy suburban Chicago hometown. The victim was an 8th grader of Iranian descent, who had his collarbone broken in two places. The attacker was a 7th grader who has been charged with a felony. But his identity has been completely embargoed by the press. Why does he deserve such protection? The Chicago Tribune has the only hint in this quote from the attacker: "Hey, Persian. Do you want to fight a black man?" Yeah, this story has already been completely buried. Doesn't fit the narrative.

64 Posted by: Vic at February 15, 2014 06:26 PM (T2V/1) What I would like to see, would be if Obama and his minions did what you say and bullied it through, and the people who didn't want the union held a strike against the union. My dad was a UAW member at a company that was not automobile industry. I grew up listening to him complain about the union and the way they operate. A large part of their role is to keep drunks and lazy bums from being fired. My dad had to work with drunks and lazy bums. It's not pleasant or safe. They also prioritize which of their union members are important and which are not so important. In other words, the big 3 employees matter, the rest are told to sign their contracts and get to work. Oh, and pay those double union dues to GM workers can strike. Anyone who thinks unions look out for the little guy is a fool. And they ARE corrupt.

Yeah, its pretty much a case of "what have you done for me lately."  Unions were likely necessary back then to get things fixed faster than they otherwise would have.  But now, what do they do?  They don't exist to protect the workers.  They exist to increase their profits, but they don't actually make anything so their only way to generate their money is to raise dues or to increase their numbers.  Maybe sometime in the future unions will be necessary, but now they are little more than leeches on employees.

74 Much of what a union focuses on in negotiations is work rules and supervisor vs line worker disputes.

They care not one bit for productivity or morale.

It's not that they exist solely to keep drunks and the useless from being fired it's that they believe that somehow this is a benefit to their workers. (and it is but only to the drunks and the useless not to the productive)

I belonged to a union only once in my life and the one problem I had (lack of assistance with my task) the union refused to do anything about even though 2 other people quit due to the problem previous to me. (and I quit also as I couldn't move off the position and couldn't get the physical assistance the job needed)

A lot of women love unions though, I found that out.

Growing up...I remember hearing the little jingle - "Look for the Union Label".

That was when we had garment factories here in the US.

Nowadays...it's hard to find any clothing made here.

The labels all say "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in China"...or India somewhere.

We can thank the Unions for that.

And the politicians who keep raising the Minimum Wage.

Unions and the Dems...partners in crime...serial job-killers.

And the most important.  Because the drunks and lazy bums can be relied on to be the most fervent union supporters and goons for them.  Power and money for the unions.  Got to keep the drunks and bums employed because their dues are how the union makes money.  They don't give a damn if they hurt the company they work for and cost them money because if the company makes a profit one year or a loss because of poor employee output, the union still gets their dues.

Posted by: buzzion at February 15, 2014 03:37 PM (LI48c)

117 Yes, TN is a RTW state.

Clarification on Right to Work:

In RTW states, if you're in a union shop--you don't have to join *OR* pay dues.  (Usually, though, once a union has got a foothold, you'll be bullied until you either join or quit and/or the gung-ho members will actively work to get you fired-- illegal, but whatevs.....)

In non-RTW states, you sometimes don't have to join, meaning you don't attend/vote at union meetings, but you must still pay an "agency fee" which is usually the equivalent of regular dues.  (Again, the path of least resistance coercion is to simply join or quit, or don't apply in the first place.)

Some shops *require membership* period.  Likely you wouldn't even know of the job opening unless you're already a member, tho.

Then there's your "Beck rights" and I don't mean beer...............LOL!

Some genius decided that my group needed to move from one floor to another for no apparent reason, usual phone company stuff. So we were all set to move one Friday afternoon and the movers took all our stuff to the new location save for the computers and phones. Only our union brethren in the service side of the house could move them. Of course they never showed so after waiting for hours I told the group to pick up the phones and computers and we moved them ourselves. Naturally, the union filed a grievance against me. I went to the grievance hewing thinking I could reason with the shop steward. Yes, I was young and naive. I told him at one point "Look we both work for the same company and I was just trying to get my group back up and running". Union guy just looks at me and says "I don't work for the phone company I work for the union". End of meeting.

My dad was a teacher, and at one time he was the union rep in the school.  Dad was good; he was the type that years later I would meet a student of his (we have an unusual last name) and when I said that he was my father the student would tell me how good dad was.  And when he met a student years later he could remember something about them or their class year.

And there were the slug-teachers, and he would go in as the rep and make sure everything was done correctly, but he wasn't doing anything special for them.  Procedures would be followed but nothing more for those, and he really disliked the 'slugs'.

Dad's 83 and I got to call him and mom tonight.  Back later or tomorrow.

I'm back; story time:  I was at an old hydro plant in Michigan and saw the bulletin board.  Nothing had been pulled off this board just new things added.  One was a notice from about 1960 - any company that had a Federal Power Commission (now FERC) contract could not discriminate on  race, ethnicity, sex, nationality, etc. in employment.  Contracts cannot violate the law (the floor) but they may require things above that floor.  Thought it was interesting to see, like an archeological dig.

(BTW - a notice form the 1950's; since it was a national defense site - no Commies.)

191 Far be it from me to ever sympathize with a crude rabble-rouser like Crump, who should have been disbarred for actively suborning perjury from Rachel Jenteal in the Zimmerman case, but I could not see any way that Dunn wasn't guilty on Murder One. -- Yeah, it sounded like that. The jury was hung on that count, not acquitted. Wonder if they'll try again. From Legal Insurrection: http://shar.es/QNeYM "Jury Unable to Come to Verdict on Charge of Murder of Jordan Davis The jury was unable to agree on a verdict on the first count of murder in the first degree for the shooting death of Jordan Davis. As a result, this count is “hung,” and the State is free to try Dunn again on this charge at their discretion. Detailed Charges on Which Dunn Found Guilty Among the charges of which he has been found guilty are: Three counts of attempted murder in the second degree (FL §782.051) for shooting at Kevin Thompson, Leland Brunson, and Tommy Storns, the three friends with Jordan Davis in Storns’ SUV Throwing a missile into an occupied vehicle (FL §790.19) for firing into the SUV in which the boys were riding. Finally, because these felonies were committed with the use of a firearm, Dunn is also subject to Florida’s “10-20-Life” mandatory minimum sentencing law (FL §775.087), made infamous by the case of Marissa Alexander."

248 "UAW FTW, bitches."

What baffles me is that VW management regarded the UAW with such equanimity. Allowing really quite intrusive pro-unionization activities throughout.

Someone earlier said that the Germans must think that the UAW is like a German autoworkers' union, which it most definitely is not.

But surely VW were paying attention to the huge fiasco that was DaimlerChrysler, which lost Daimler shareholders a metric fuckton of money. And the Germans on the Daimler side certainly found out the hard way at Chrysler's U.S. plants about how the UAW are not like the unions in Der Vaterland.

What I figure this had to have been was VW management playing nice with its German unions. Those unions have to be getting very very nervous about assembly jobs leaving Germany for plants abroad. Energy costs are the elephant in the room as Germany tries to be the first in the world to run heavy industry on "renewables", which is hardly going to be fun for anyone.

So, the German union bosses at IG Metall presumably have been leaning hard on VW management to at least allow a union vote to be held Stateside. Figuring that the vote was a slam dunk win, and that the UAW would promptly push up Stateside VW worker wages to near (or parity with) German wages. Reducing at least one risk to German assembly line jobs.

And, VW management said, "Sehr gut," and let the vote roll.

Ding ding ding! Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner.

Let's all remember that every single account at Facebook (whether it contains valid personal info or not) is just one more incremental dab of monetization which puts cash in the pockets of Mark Zuckerberg.

Who is no friend to conservative political causes.

The more pairs of eyeballs which advertisers think that Facebook has, the more money Zuck makes. A prospect greeted with delight by Barack Obama, who has dinner with Zuckerberg every time he comes to the SF Bay Area, and leaves with fat checks in his trouser pocket.

I would say its a case of hit and miss.  You have some people that are truly crappy and are essentially bilking people out of their money for a project that will never be completed.  Others are people with actual business sense or legitimate plans and are attempting to fund things independently.  Not going through the "official channels" that might shy away from a risk or will stifle the creativity of a project.

I don't buy Apple's overpriced flimsy fashion-accessory crap.

I gave up the Hollyweird habit over a decade ago and don't regret the loss. Wish I had done so by the earlier Nineties.

It's vanishingly rare for me to patronize any new musical artists, at least not ones that "the industry" pushes.

Posted by: tangonine (Commader, 3d Squirrel Brigade) at February 15, 2014 08:46 PM (x3YFz) By the time she's botoxed, made up by professional makeup artists, airbrushed, and photoshopped she'll look younger than Chelsea by the time the LIV's see her mug on their checkout counter rags Be prepared for a flood of "70 is the New 40" features from all the major MSM publications and daytime tv shows

316 And twitter has proven useful in various people power protests around the world, so I use it for as an anti- propaganda tool.

318 Kickstarter is perfectly legitimate. It's a way for like-minded people to financially support projects that they want to see happen. Crowdfunding is an emerging strategy for people who have an idea in mind to gather funding in order to bring it to fruition. I contributed to Rand Simburg's Kickstarter project to write and publish his book on spaceflight safety. In return, I got an autographed book. I contributed to 10,000 Maniacs' effort to fund the recording and distribution of a new album via PledgeMusic. In return, I got an autographed CD. I contributed to the project to create a Tesla Museum in his old laboratory building via Indiegogo. That was a big one, because the first order of business was to raise enough money to buy the property. That effort raised over a million dollars from donors from all over the world. In return, I got a T-shirt and a couple of other things. Crowdfunding totally rocks.

319 #305 Did it work? You know that summoning the dark forces is a very dangerous game? Never play with a Ouija board either. You'll risk the danger of being bored to death, shallow burblings from beyond and all that.

320 Hillary can be beat by an electable experienced Republican who appeals to the vast moderate middle hungry for another choice. All it will take is a purchase of 30 minutes of TV time to whiteboard all the candidate's positions Mitt would have won by a landslide if he'd just done the White Board!!

322 "Reminds me of when I was pregnant and would crave chipped ice and lemons and the smell of gasoline and lighter fluid." Chipped ice and industrial ammonia cleaning products. Whatever it was they used in the bathrooms at the 61st at Clark AB... that. And ice.
